  • Making of Traditional Puukko Knife
    A friend of mine called me and told me that he was moving to Lapland later this summer. He asked if I could make a knife for him so I did. I wanted it to be cool and useful knife and decided to do a puukko (actually it is basically the one and only option in Finland) and nice leather sheath to go with it.
    The steel I used for this knife was high carbon steel made for knife making. The wood in the handle was birch that I found from our firewood pile. I also used brass and leather in the handle.
    Hope you enjoyed!

    I love the use of minimalist tools the classic finish style pukko with barrel shaped handle is definitely my favourite

    Absolutely brilliant looking knife and so skilfully made using inexpensive tools available to most people. 👏

    I love that you used a bevel jig with an *angle grinder*. Never seen that before and it's inspired. Lovely knife too, but that trick is fantastic.

      Thank you!
      Those threads happened to fit perfectly to the hole for the handle. Saves a lot of time when you can do the rough work with the grinder and finish off by hand.

      @@onnissinen I just wanted to say that being able to attach the angle grinder is brilliant. You should make a quick video on it.
      Thanks.

    It seems the only thing you can’t do with an angle grinder is bake a cake. (and I’m not so sure about that.)
    Nice puuko. You nailed the tempering color.

    How far back does "traditional" go? Does it include the Wirkala, with the (approximately) rhomboid cross-section handle? A cylindrical, barrel, shaped handle would not be as easy to control turning in the hand, I imagine. Beautiful knife,though. Thanks for video.

    Puuko also don’t have plunges… you want the edge disappearing in to the handle

    Gosh i love your no bullshit yet refined approach , do you think tmpering with a blow torch is good enough if you watch the color ? I saw that technniques for smaller tool but not for a full and beautiful knife like that. Anyway subscribed , looking foward to see more

    • @abaratien
      @abaratien 2 роки тому +2

      Also, is the stain liquid you used is only for wood or leather ? I have a shit ton of leather dye and my feeling is that it’s good enough to transform clear / boring wood quickly with a nice danish/ linen oil on top to protect it . What’s your opinion ?

    • @onnissinen
      @onnissinen  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you!
      Actually I think that tempering in oven would definetely be a better way. You can do it with a torch but you cannot hold the temperature. Actually I ended up tempering the blade even further but keeping the edge in water so I can soften the spine.

    • @onnissinen
      @onnissinen  2 роки тому +1

      The stain I used is for wood and leather both. And I even use it with airbrush sometimes. I suggest you give it a try!

    No. The shoulders should not be perfectly flat… they should slowly open in a gentle curve…. Major weakness by squaring them like that..

  • @arkas6797

    The best gift for your boyfriend would be the truth about puko. In other words, the handle is devoid of any anatomy and security, the Nordic sharpening is the second worst after the hollow and the most basic their steel belongs to the age of the dinosaurs. Surely your work is perfect with a beautiful result, but a utility knife is not enough for beauty.

    • @supernova1976
      @supernova1976 10 місяців тому +1

      Thats not very nice, besides the obsession with super steel and man made handle material in a full tang without the ergonomics of a puukko is useless in my opinion. the scandi grind works in this part of the world, because it is the perfect thing for wood work. not everyone needs 5mm thick blade full tang self defense survival knife, it has its place but not for everything.

    Voisitko kertoa terän ja kahvan mitat

    • @onnissinen
      @onnissinen  2 роки тому

      En kyllä millään muista ja puukko on jo kaverilla. Jokainen puukko kannattaa tehdä käyttäjänsä mukaan. Yleensä mittaan kahvan yksinkertaisesti oman kämmenen leveyden mukaan ja lisään siihen sentin tai useamman riippuen kahvan muodosta. Myös paksuus vaihtelee käyttäjän kouran mukaan.
      Terästä sen verran, että noin pitkää terää ei käytännössä tarvitse puukkoon, se vaan omaan silmään näyttää paremmalle ja pienien puiden pilkkominen käy näppärämmin.
