They are both correct in different ways imo

@@LauraReactions No they always start in the element of the nation they are born in and then progress along the following cycle Air water Earth fire water earth fire air earth fire air water fire air water earth It's called the avatar cycle, Katara mentioned it in episode 3. It's also the order in which the Avatar is born into nations. The last Avatar, Roku, was born into the firenation, when he died the next one, Aang, was born into the air nomads. Hence why the firenation knew the Avatar was the last Airtbender.
I don't think that there's a set in stone rule that the avatar has to learn to bend the elements in that specific order. But these episodes gave us a complete picture of some issues our Aang has, he's very impatience and he has trouble to maintain attention for long periods of time, so in Aang's specific case, I do believe he needs to learn in that order. I also believe that JJ has a very reductive view of fire bending, but you'll get to see that later on. I'm loving your reactions Laura, I also cry easily when I'm emotionally connected with the characters ATLA made me cry way too many times... Still does.
I love water bending.. and the fact that they are capable to heal was so great. All the elements have his owns subhabilities. u will be learning about it later. It like a power up but it's so good writed that feels natural.
Don't give up on your theory of one episode being about one week for the characters. I've actually had the same theory for a long time. There are exceptions (like the Winter Solstice episodes), but viewing most episodes as one week of time for the characters actually works out really well. I'm not surprised you're almost crying over Avatar, just a little surprised such strong emotions are coming so early in the show. It's gonna be a great ride and it'll be fun going on it with you.
What do you think about Jeong Jeong's generally negative take on firebending? Also the fandom likes to think Roku was on purpose setting up Aang for failure to teach him a lesson, but I like it more thinking he made a mistake. From the Winter Solstice episode it's clear he believes the comet situation is very pressing, which it is, and Aang has no time to do Avatar stuff the traditional way so he forces Jeong Jeong to teach Aang but he ends up being wrong. Also I just generally dislike the belief that Avatars are all knowingly wise and incapable of mistakes and bad advice but I feel like the show is very clear with that not being the case.
