I've been telling people since the announcement of CS2 that investing into high tier skins is gonna lose you money because the prices were already inflated as shit and noone that comes new/back to CS is gonna drop several thousands on an M4 skin. One of the worst investments I've heard of to this day
Prices were going up due to the hype. Everyone and their mom knew that, no one knew how high it would peak and where it would crash so at the time it wasnt that bad. I'm surprised it dipped bellow pre cs2 but part of that was dud to the launch state of cs2. Regardles cs2 is the future for counterstrike. What we saw in skin prices is the potential of where it can be in the future. Howl guy took an L but in the long run could make a lot of profit

I have a decent knife and inventory in the area of ~1000$ more or less, and thought about buying butterfly fade, because its pink like barbie. But it is 2500$ for that amount I can bring my family to vacation or buy Steam VR headset + a nice wheel. Prices for skins ARE insane.
I traded from 200 to 1000 back then, i traded it all for 16 cobblestone cases to invest, i then opened them all after a month of being bored. I was disgusted to see they are 2k each now but that’s just how it goes no one really knew how crazy stuff would become
I miss when skins were super cheap, but more than that I miss when there were no trade holds, I t made it so much easier to buy and sell. Now it’s kind of a nightmare
The CS market showed that you can easily profit from skins with hyped items like the dragon lore and the howl. Back in the day we didn’t really care about this aspect of skins. We bought them just to have nice skins while playing. Most people didn’t thought, that the skin they bought would give them some crazy returns. That’s why CS Skins are so expensive currently.
If I invested 100k in skins and lost 20k in dollars, I'd have a heart attack. Also back in like 2015 to 2016, Butterfly Fade was like 200 dollars and I bought one with birthday money I had saved up. I was so happy to have it, but then being the dumbie I was, I wanted one with more purple after I saw someone else, then games I wanted came out, so I traded down and bought games eventually the last knife I had when trading down got scammed v~v Personally I would've kept the fade if I was more knowledgeable of what it might've looked like in the future. But that's every CS player's journey from that point and to now. Like I even played in 2014 and could've had some nice stuff but no.. no I wasn't able to invest in skins or had people to play with.
When I started playing in 2016/2017ish, I got my first knife and it was a BFK Scorched and it cost me 87 on the steam marketplace and I got made fun of in game for having a broke boy knife. I wish skins were that accessible now.
Let’s just say I am the person who came from a era that $25 ibp sticker was selling on steam market , and the old me was thinking “ who the fk gona pay that much for a sticker ? I could buy a good meal for $25 😮
I'm glad you mentioned the whole "who actually buys these? it's not people just playing the game." Knives have gone up so much in value since I last played CSGO before I started up again in the months leading up to CS2, and I've not been able to afford any knife let alone gloves. Even back then I had a shitty looking ft Safari Mesh Falchion worth less than $50. I just don't want to spend that kind of money on the game. That's kinda why I don't mind here and there opening cases when I get enough to sell from weeklies. Or occasionally drop like $10 to open a few. Opening something cool from a case, maybe even having it be worth enough to trade for my dream of Crimson Web Skeleton Knife or Tigertooth Huntsman/Bowie is kinda the only way I'd accept if I had gotten a knife that expensive.
Guys the reason knives are so expensive id not because bla bla its because they are rare to get and on average if you Wanted to get the knife yourself from opening cases it would cost you over 1 Grand thats why the prices are so expensive
I remember i had a butterfly night when they released the case, then i got scammed like a year later. Now this knife went up so insane i dont wanna look at it
CS investors are gambling addicts. Your whole investment is dependant on the success of a video game and it hasn't been turning out all that great for them to say the least. With games like the finals coming out that can possibly steal away players that are interested in the esports&FPS genre this market is becoming very risky. The game haven't turned out better than CS:GO, lacking old game modes, workshop maps and mods lost, community servers are in the state of infancy, surfing and KZ not working well, the gameplay changed with peekers advantage and subtick on 64 tick servers are very controversial, pros quitting, anti cheat is still the same. This game needs a big turnaround of updates for it to stop falling off a cliff. I think this is just the start if valve doesn't wake up in one or two years we will see a huge market crash.
Bought my first ever knife Bayonet Tiger Tooth FN for 180€-200€ back in 2017? Sold it for ~600€ in 2023 as my last cashout. Had many knives, wish I had hold on to them instead of selling. Actually would've had a nice car instead of just few PCs & a fridge with that money. The pain of investing.
CS2 „Investors“ expect high profits within 1 month. If they see the first decrease in price they panicsell everything… Buy High, Sell Low. If the guy with the howls just releax for a few years he will end up with some decent returns.
