  • Trouble with Wildlife, Canol Road, Driving on Top of the World Highway, Crossing into Alaska! |Go North Ep 9
This episode takes us down the remote Canol road or Yukon highway 6. Halfway through we had a close encounter with some wildlife that was intent on stopping our travels.

Later the Canol put is in a pickle when rain turned things to mud and made for a slippery drive. Out the other side the Campbell highway took us up to the Klondike hwy that lead to Dawson City. We stop in Faro and Dawson for a bit before heading up the Top of the world and enter into Alaska via the Poker Creek border crossing. From there we drove the Taylor highway to Tok where we re-provisioned and headed south to the Richardson highway that takes us to Paxson, the start of the Denali Highway.

We are hoping to RV to Montana permanently in a couple of years. Our hearts are there already. We want to move somewhere around the Flathead area, perhaps north of there, around Colombia Falls, or the likes of it.

Sir Timothy's Piano Time ... the Flathead is beautiful . So is the Bitterroot . All our family lives in West Coast. RVing is our only avenue to spend time with them. We could never live there . Be prepared for long winters . Weather can be harsh at times and growing season short. But we love the season changes.

A low cost battery powered electric fence will keep animals from underneath your truck. Run it around the perimeter of the truck. Use plastic pegs to hang the wire on. Connect one lead to the wire, and the other to a metal stake pushed into the ground.

Marrmat will chew under your vehicle too. I've heard the chicken wire idea, but when we battled marrmats we used the tarp method. Get one of those huge multi ply tarp big enough to drive on to then pull all sides up, over the wheel wells and tail gate, in your case the stairs and secure it.

I recommend that you buy a roll of chicken wire to completely encircle your camper when you're camped in a remote area where porcupines may be an issue. I learned about that trick from some experienced hikers/campers who would often leave their vehicles unattended for a few days while on their backcountry adventure. No one wants to find out the hard way that their brake and electrical lines have been chewed by the prickly varmints.

    • @travelingman21000
      @travelingman21000 5 років тому +4

That a good idea about the chicken wire, it could have kept a pack rat out of my camper, it was hell to get rid if it!

    • @PaulaTheCanadianExplorer

I always carry a roll in my truck when I’m out and about hiking in our Canadian wilderness. I set it up as soon as I get to the hiking trail/camp known to have porcupine roaming the area.

I wonder how high was the chicken wire fence? It should probably be at least 4 ft. high to keep the critters from crawling over and into the wheel wells.
BTW, mice can be an issue too if a vehicle sits at one spot for a while. Honda had issued a TSB for mice chewing wiring in the engine bays. They even sell a special, mice proof electrical tape with hot pepper extract added to it. Maybe some bear spray can be used to spray under a vehicle to keep the critters away? Bear spray contains hot pepper extract as the main ingredient.

It was interesting that you showed a gravel driveway where you camped, that is on the Dempster. We stayed in that same area in 2018 during 2 days of rain that turned the neighboring small river into a torrent that closed the highway just after we left on the third morning. Glad we decided against traveling the Canol in our 19 year old Lance, but did the entire Campbell. LOVE your videos. They bring a flood of wonderful memories from our 4 months crossing western Canada that summer and a strong longing to go back to the northern wilderness.

We drove to Alaska in 2016, and plan on doing it again in 2021. We drove a 4WD F-250 pulling a '27 foot travel trailer. I usually stick to paved roads, although with all the construction we still saw plenty of mud. That was quite an adventure with the porcupines. That sometimes happens here in California with marmots too. I'm glad things worked out on the Canol Road. I really enjoyed your video, but please, please, pay attention to warnings when travelling in the bush. Wet weather means wet weather, period. No one is going to come rescue you. I can't wait to see more videos.

lol When animals attack . . . . . pickup! I'll be installing a 12VDC siren under my future Class C RV, I tested it, it's a loud puppy. I'll use it to scare away someone trying to break into RV while I boondock, and now, use it to scare away wild animal under the RV. My theory being, that drunk/thief will not like the attention the siren will make and it'll be more effective than horn. My primary defense weapons will be a mace(not for Canada trip), hiking stick with carbon steel tip and chef's knife. That's beautiful country there, having 4X4 rig is a big plus. Safe travels.

Try letting a bit of air out of the tires you will get better grip on the tracks and get your self a cheap pan spray for cooking and spray under your mudguards this helps in stopping the mud to stick, some times I spray the tires and this helps getting the mud out of the tires tread.

Adventures abound for you guys. You guys pack more into a day than I think I could do in a week of vacation. Amazing. I will remember to wait til July to venture to the Yukon and beyond to let the frost heaves to subside. Never heard of porcupines doing that it's usually squirrels in an urban environment modus Operandi. I was going to mention in a previous video that the best prevention of bear encounters are bear bells or being noisy on the trail which is what the tiny bells do. Bears generally don't like humans ( not enough meat on the bone apparently) Last year a bunch of Mountain bikers somewhere near Banff were swiftly, quietly moving through the forest trail as bikers can often do when they encounter a bear just out of hibernation hungry as can be. Unfortunately, the encounter was fatal. It is good to be prepared with bear spray but a once of prevention..... So I wonder if they sell chicken wire in Chicken lol.
When you wondered about the road with the rain I was worried, glad you made it. I have seen this forestry trunk road turn into a fine slurry which is really scary when you have a 60 lumber truck taking up the centre of the road heading towards you.

As is normal: fantastic scenery and camera/drone work, Tom and Cait. Really sorry to hear of your "prickly" issue. Another commentor (below) suggested encircling the RV with chicken wire. I would suggest a hydraulic system that would raise the ENTIRE rig, a minimum, of 4' above ground level. Now let those pesky porcupines do their nibbling! Am glad y'all escaped WITHOUT having to pull those quills out. Be super careful and Y'all Be Safe!

A little dusting with a dry fire extinguisher would help, but (realize it may loose the rest of it's air charge through the powder stuck in the valve, making it essentially a large paper weight).& of course you carry a fire extinguisher!.. For future there's a product on the market called 'critter ridder" (a spray scent that may help discharge hungry ,small omnivores).....Or you could just cook up a hot dog & put it under the tire & start the ....oh well never mind.

Why didn't you go visit Dredge #4 when in Dawson City and post that here as well? It is a great lesson in the history of the area and pretty darn impressive too.

Its all well and good having 4WD but i can be completely useless in those sorts of situations with thick mud if you are still using street/suv tires, get some with a more knobbly tread pattern.

Just came upon your channel. We have a very similar setup to you, although different brand of truck and camper. Really want to take my wife up to this neck of the woods in the next year or two. Awesome info and I will be subscribing to your channel. What time of year is this?

You are quite the skilled young man. I suspect that the warmth of your truck underbelly attracted the animals to climb up into the truck.

Strobe lights are supposed to be able to scare off mice and prevent infestation. I wonder if this or sonic noise would scare off porcupines and other critters?

The downfall of owning a Ford... my son bought a brand new ford car in 2016, 3 days later his car wouldn’t start. Come to find out, Ford buys their wiring from a company that makes the rubber covering out of peanut oil. He lives out in the desert where rabbits abound. They continued to reek havoc until he finally sold it this past week. I heard that Honda & another manufacturer also use same company. YUMMY!!! 🤣🐇.
    Great videos... thanks for sharing.

Please update your story, you drove South Canola Road only, not the Canola Road. The North Canola Road is starting at Ross River, and is heading to Northwest Territories, it is much more interesting!

Always bring good tire chains on trips like this.
Not just good for snow and ice, but mud too. Or rachet wood to your tires for insta paddles. 😅

Cobalt, not lithium, in and of itself is toxic and unstable. When used in lithium-ion batteries, it provides the risk of thermal runaway, a chemical reaction internal to the battery, regardless of ambient temperature.

Correct, the Battleborn liiron do not use Cobalt.
