It seems everyone but you owns your videos. Fran said the content on those laserdiscs is not available anywhere else. Not on DVD, not on TV maybe on some obscure VHS tape somewhere. If anyone owns it, its NASA, certainly not the BBC. There are ways to fool the content ID system. Slow it down, put a border around the video, split it up into parts.
It's insane. I said about ten years ago, every single thing would become marketed commodity... even the air we breathe. It's coming. You tube was every random and cool thing.... once. Fran is keeping it real...... trying to keep it real. It's sad to see the stress of it. Doing what you love isn't an option any more. Someone will appear to stand over you and extort the living crap out of you, no matter what you do. I don't like it.
I'm not sure Algorithms have ever been the best way of finding new stuff... Sometimes you might get turned onto something good if you're lucky... But not often.

@@mikethebloodthirsty Algorithms are used by Google because 1) they can, 2) Google is too lazy to hire people to actually review the content and 3) It's the fastest way to "detect" infringement. Unfortunately, UA-cam's own algorithmic detection is ripe for abuse. Today, that's mostly how it's used. People create "content holder" accounts and then flag anything and everything they possibly can. The Multi-Channel Networks (MCNs) are mostly responsible for this. If you are a channel owner and join an MCN, everything you upload becomes listed under the content ID matching system, even if it's not valid content or content that you don't actually own. I've had many copyright claims made on videos that make no sense strictly because a channel (which was part of an MCN) uploaded a video that contained the same cutscene as all other people will see on a play through. This then causes a copyright claim due to content ID matching for a channel who has no valid claim on that content. UA-cam's "detection" system is far too simplistic and is easily gamed. And yet, Google definitely knows this and does nothing about it.
UA-cam is canibalizing itself. Other highly successful channels are struggling too. I feel it’s the beginning of the end of UA-cam, at least as we know it.
I think that’s part of it. It’s a broken model with how they monetize me it. We went from short commercials we could skip to now having a minimum of two commercials at beginning and can’t skip the first one. THEN, you might have a advertisement every 5 minutes. I’ve literally watched a 25 minute instructional video that had 5 different advertisement breaks in it...

UA-cam doesn't want to assume liability so they bend over backwards to comply with the DMCA as well as using their own in house system meant to augment it to avoid vicarious liability like cox was hit with. The problem is that AI or artificial intelligence has advanced to a point of availability that it is easier and easier for more markets and people to access it. This leads to powerful tools in the hands of idiots who trust technology over common sense. In shot, AI is allowing morons to feel as confident as professionals. As this happens, you will find people or organizations making spurious claims and youtube is afraid to error in any way that would expose them to liability. This copyright clampdown really started about the time Cox lost and was liable for 1 billion dollars to various recording labels.
its a hard balance trying to do what you like and what gets the views, plus this is the lowest income month, l try and do a long sunday vid to appeal the viewers but if l get some others more my liking l put them up mid week, but maintain every sunday, 1st.
That "Foundation" was more like a Wikipedia, attempting to store the sum total knowledge of their civilization, so it could be rebuilt after the predicted collapse, and rebuilt much more quickly.
I have TWO channels over the 150K sub mark and I'm still living hand-to-mouth. Making UA-cam a full-time gig is *NOT* an easy path. On the up-side, UA-cam themselves are doing "very nicely thank you" with ad revenues of $15b, up from $11b a year ago. Creators are hurting but YT isn't.

My other channel go deleted and I filed about half a dozen appeals over about 6 moths and I just go it back the other day, so thats cool. And I don't even have content on it. But I was banned off of youtube before I ever even uploaded. They never told me WHY i got suspended. Just that I violated terms of service and their harassment policy. I kind of think it was for posting a link to a website off of youtube. Because I don't use strong language or anything unless its a channel and comment section that already has that type of thing. In some of my discussions in youtube comment sections every now and again I might post a link to an article or news page and thats against terms of service apparently. So thats my best guess. But I never got any sort of warning. Just went to the grocery store, got back, and my channel was banned. I was working on videos at the time and was told I was not allowed on the platform. I couldn't even log onto another account if I was on google chrome. I had to switch back to using firefox to even log into my back up account. But i was blocked from even trying to start a channel in the future. So atleast I got my channel back and the right to be a potential creator, but the nature of my content is critical so it really does make me worry about the problems i will face in the future.
I don't think UA-cam is necessarily mature yet. This may become the go to tv of the future, and perhaps revenue for channels will improve. We'll have to see.
@@jc.1191 Sorry but revenues for channels are about to take a dive. YT is giving itself permission to put ads on *all* videos, even non-monetized channels. That means they'll have a glut of ad-space and the laws of supply & demand dictate that this will see a dramatic fall in the price of advertising -- thus the amount that partner channels receive. Once again, YT wins, content creators lose :-( I made a video about this recently.
The good thing is, at least you uploaded them to Patreon, and not YT. You would've gotten copyright strikes. YT likes to push big channels, it's really obvious when you see the trending list.....A popular channel (mostly the "goof off" or "family" type that don't help viewers save money or educate them)can have 250K views in 12 hours and be "Trending", meanwhile you or I can have more views for a video in that same time frame, and you won't be on the trending list. I've only been on the list twice. Smaller channels videos get buried way down the search results. I've had viewers tell me many times over the years, I was searching for a particular DIY repair video, and watched 10-20 first, and when they found mine 2 pages down, it was the best and they couldn't figure out why it wasn't at the top. YT can be very frustrating.
The Space Odyssey panel was actually one of the videos that I really enjoyed watching. You shouldn't put too much attention to the growth. The viewers you get from shallow content most likely won't be very engaged and will less likely support you on Patreon. I have the exact same experience. I see selling kits more like a community service. Nevertheless, the margins were still ok to finance all the hardware I needed and a new editing PC last year. I create the boards for my projects anyways so I just order a few more. A sold batch pays for the next batches. Taking paid sponsorships might take some financial pressure from you. The viewers won't mind. Keep it up!
There's nothing that says you can't monetize public domain materials. Unfortunately, what Fran attempted to post isn't in the public domain. The copyrights on that LD compilation haven't yet expired. This means that placing a copy onto UA-cam likely constituted unauthorized duplication of that compilation. So... here's the misnomer. Regardless of whether or not you make money, copyrights remain valid to the copyright holder. It's not whether you make money, it's the act of unauthorized copying / duplication that is considered infringement. Placing a copy on UA-cam violates "copy" + "rights" (i.e, copyrights). If, as a copyright holder, you don't ask for removal of all unauthorized copies, that's as good as saying it _is_ a valid copy. The act of not requesting removal of unauthorized copies dilutes your copyright and makes your claims weaker in the future. If you wish to retain copyrights over your material, you must be diligent in asking for removal of all unauthorized copies... else, you may lose your copyright over that material.

Hi Fran. I have led a life of manufacturing clothing and costumes and of course all of the trials and tribulations are very similar to your manufacturing issues. However, there may be another idea... after 20 years, I eventually realized that making and selling unique or very small run, high priced items was much easier to keep up with and required very little capital investment. Your notoriety could focus your audience as buyers and really help launch this forward. We would all love watching you make limited-run, unique, expensive "toys" or custom useful items that are available to bid /purchase or custom order. Since there is no way to compete with large manufacturers, just leave them in the dust and follow the path of the Haute Couturiers: special, unique and VERY expensive. Love your channel!!!

@@FranLab I've thought about making kits but the problem is I can build the kits to a high standard but will people buying them be able to? So that opens up to constantly being in contact with people trying to build a complex product with limited soldering skills for sometime after the product has shipped and the cash been spent. No thanks! I've spend over 2 years developing the firmware, designing a PCB and aluminium case and still nowhere near market. You are right manufacturing your own product is a mugs game, I hope to get my box of tricks out as a niche product but it highly unlikely to make me any money for the time and effort put in.
I quit paying the BBC license fee when I quit watching TV for UA-cam two years ago, I now pay the same amount per month via Patrion to my favourite channels. I give twice as much to Fran as I do to others because her channel is twice as awesome. Enjoy the break Fran, burnout is hard but you'll get there.
10:42 It seems to me that UA-cam is not interesting in helping anyone unless they have like 1,000,000 or more subscribers, multi-millions of views and can shove ads down your throat every 2-3 minutes in a 10-15 minute video.
You should upload these discs to the Internet Archive. They don't have any automated copyright bots (though the downside is that if content uploaded on your account gets too many manual takedown requests they'll just purge everything you've uploaded, and your account, with no recourse).
@@aspensmonster I'm still seeing a bunch of 'abandonware' software being uploaded to the Internet Archive. There's plenty of companies that would probably want some of that stuff taken down and I've been quite surprised what I'm easily able to find there.

I have uploaded quite a bit of content to the Internet Archive. All of it is public domain. Copyright has been claimed in a couple of cases, even when the original copyright was owned by the UK Government and I have their authority to publish it!
I work for NASA as an animator. I create a spacecraft piece and put it out through normal channels. Free for use by the public. Later, a company makes a video using it. I cannot by law upload or use it in that edited and copywritten form, even though it would not exist without me.
Yes! Thank you! You can make treatments of public domain material and it would fall under copyright. Even editing a video in a certain way is such a treatment, and it is likely why these are under copyright. Though, I don't understand why the BBC would be claiming copyright, could be some license transfers and such going on.
@@JamesMears76 then you have to file a counterclaim, and that's when it gets dicey, and if the company pushes back on its fraudulent claim then you could end up with a strike against your channel, or a long time in civil courts trying to clear it up. The system is broken, largely because UA-cam has decided it will not act as an arbiter in these situations. Read up on the situation around the copyright journey the channel h3h3 had to deal with, which ended up in a lawsuit, which they won. Still, months and months of work, and money and stress involved.
@@stephenpwilson1930 the question is whether this specific situation is nasty tactics though. The source material from NASA is obviously in the public domain. But if I take that material and alter it in any way (even things like color grading, or editing the timing, anything) that new interpretation is copyrighted to me, similarly how this material would be copyrighted to whoever made the laserdiscs. For you to use my material would be in breach of the copyright, you would have to go back to the NASA source material and publish that to be on the right side of copyright legislation. This extends to just about anything. Films like Nosferatu are in the public domain, so you can take that and recut it into a short film, for instance, and I cannot take that recut that you made and publish it like my own, even though I could do that with the original Nosferatu movie. A better license would be for the NASA material to be licensed under Creative Commons Share Alike, which requires the new material to be shared under the same license, meaning anyone could use the derivatives as well. However, that would require a major change in operation for copyright legislation in the US, since the current laws were made before Creative Commons was ever thought up.
Fran, I can say that as a long time subscriber that UA-cam's algorithms will show me things that I am not interested in so much more often than YOUR videos that I actually SUBSCRIBE to. You're not letting us down, it's the media you're on (UA-cam) that is. Keep on keepin' on! I know it has to be tough, and there are probably times that you question going on, but you mean so much to so many people. I know this because your videos have been a source of entertainment and delight for this old EE for many years. You're 99% right about manufacturing, too, and the kit economy is not only a whole lot of work but minimal margins. However, I think people would pay $60 (or more) for a kit. Grab an old Heathkit catalog from the late 70s or early 80s and check the prices on some of their stuff... then triple it to adjust for inflation for today's dollars. Granted, todays maker market is different than the amateur radio/hobbyist computer market of those days and Heathkit is probably not the best poster child for anything, but I think you get the idea.

I'm a new subber, and I have almost never seen a suggestion from YT to watch your videos. YT sucks more all the time. Other channels I regularly watch have gone to another forum to escape the crap that YT slings.
I guess I can echo what some others are saying here - you have to use some other streaming service other than youtube. There are several to choose from - I ran across one earlier today on a different youtube channel, where the guy was dealing with fair-use 6-second limits when discussing music theory - he uses Nebula. I haven't even signed up yet - it just happened that youtube recommended a music theory video after yours (who the hell knows why). Now it happens that I found that interesting. I don't know if I even will sign up, and there are other streaming services out there. The monetization and rating algorithms are entirely a separate issue, and I know others are also dissatisfied with youtube. Don't know what the answer is.
@TheCessnaDriver Eventually, Archive.org will be forced to succumb to RIAA and MPAA pressures, forcing them to cave in and perform DMCA takedowns. For now, Archive.org has been quietly out of reach of Hollywood. At some point, they won't be and there _will_ come legal pressures to either get them to comply with alleged copyright holder claims or face losing their entire domain by their domain registrar. Domain registrars don't take kindly to domain holders who willfully break the domain registrar's own terms and conditions. Domain registrars are then more than willing to suspend domains for breaking said terms and conditions. Archive.org needs to be careful.
@@abigguitar - there's no reason to be defeatist about this. There could be no greater difference in policy than between UA-cam and Archive.org. The latter will fight false copyright claims and fight to keep things lawfully in the public domain. UA-cam just wants to make money, and thus provides a venue for those who steal from the public domain, and then take a cut from the add revenue. Again, archive.org fights for public domain, UA-cam is a major accomplice to the criminal gangs stealing from it.
@@steve1978ger It doesn't matter that Archive is willing to fight false copyright claims because RIAA and MPAA have deep pockets, and they can bankrupt Archive with a constant barrage of lawsuits. The correct action would be to upload them to The Pirate Bay where they can never be taken down. In that sense, The Pirate Bay is actually the greatest internet archive in existence!
This reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend a few weeks ago about UA-cam and what, or more specifically who, it's really for. Despite often being trumpeted as a platform for independent content creators, it isn't, it's for big business to further its own ends and make itself even wealthier, and the longer UA-cam exists, the fewer opportunities it provides for the independent creator as they get swamped by content from huge media conglomerates who are responsible for the vast majority of the most viewed UA-cam content now. These companies know the cost of everything but the value of nothing, and in the market society information and knowledge and creativity is only valued if it can be profited from by some fatcat.
It's harder to get more attention on UA-cam these days because there's so many more people doing it, and doing it full time. So there's just that much more high quality content trying to get everyone's attention. Very different from how it was five years ago.
I wouldn't call it *quality* content so much as there's just plain content. True the budget for a lot of channels are growing so there's a lot of "flash" but as far as actual quality content, IMHO, is really hit or miss. There's channels I sub/watch that I think are quality but almost all of them have been in my subs for a very long time. That's because as soon as I find one I sub, BUT, that honestly doesn't come around all that much. At least for the amount of subjects I'm interested in. This is only my opinion though.
UA-cam is just plain broken. I miss videos from my favorite channels all the time. I generally have youtube auto-playing in my office all day as I work. Instead of showing me new content from the channels that I'm subscribed to, it often insists on showing me old videos that I have already seen (sometimes just earlier in the day) and other random stuff. Obviously this means that my favorite channels aren't getting paid.
OMG yes. The repeated videos I've already watched is insane these days. Alternately, I get presented with weird content I don't want to see at all. Add to that the fact that there is no way to actually block channels I personally find useless or disgusting... ugh
Never use automatic play. The AI behind the scenes does not know you, and can't be bothered to get to know you, if it is even cabable in some limited way. Instead, it shows you things that happened to be watched by others who had some similar viewing to yours, which has the net effect of the AI 'thinking' you are like those other people in your tastes, which is mostly untrue. But the implied similarity persists, and you will continue to get things you are not interested in, and may violently dislike. And if you clear your UA-cam history, it is no better, because then the machine has NO idea about what you have shown you like. If the YT AI is going to remember everything, it could at least make it easier to find JUST the things you have watched, in a special list, and just the things you have liked in another list, and similarly for disliked, commented on, etc. But noooooo, that would be too useful, too human-friendly. :/
Try Nebula for sure lots of good youtubers like Issac Arthur and Joe Scott have signed on with similar frustrations. Also We have had similar problems with youtube... We have deals with many minor and most major labels for broadcasting music, however youtube live doesn't have a proper appeal. There is no way to even tell them or send them said agreements. It's hard to argue with bot-police, and there is no one to contact (at least for us). Good luck and keep the great content coming! You have massive skills, If you want a semi high paying job in welding, construction, electrical/mechanical engineering, aviation, etc....here in Vegas, I am pretty sure it would be 123, however museums are a bit tough.

Oh Fran! SO very sorry to hear of this crap! UA-cam has gotten pretty strict/tight/cheap lately, while still screwing up accounts and how content is stored. I almost started my own channel, but after reading horror stories I decided not to. They take TONS of time to produce content, and there is some pretty awful/stupid/meaningless content that seems to have a large following for some unknown reason. I would love to contribute more, but I am financially strapped so I do what I can, but your channel is worth WAY more than I can give, and I can only wish the best for you. I will continue to watch and donate what I can because you do try and create excellent content. I just hope you don't fall apart and do take some time away from youtube as it has become alot for you and you DO need a break! Don't worry about us.... we will still be there when YOU are ready! I remember when I used over 100 years old public domain film material in some video for my Lo-Fi ambient stuff and soon I got copyright strike from some record label. I did the research and found out they had one music video on their channel that used material from the same pd film. I contacted UA-cam and the claim was removed, but after that I also removed my video because I knew someone else may strike it again. it would have been too much work compared to fact that my video gets only few views per year. In other words. That automated copyrigt strike thing just doesn't work right
It seems there's too much power in the hands of the copyright owner. OTOH, I see a lot of small artists getting their original (copyrighted) works ripped off & there's no one who will help make it stop. If you don't own lawyers & a deep litigation fund, you're out in the cold.

Yeah, post DMCA you effectively have no appeals process and no recourse. No process. If it's old enough, it should be public domain. Your video on the Hollywood warehouse fire makes it crystal clear that we are going to *lose* important cultural works because of this.
I used to volunteer for a 16mm educational film archive (afana.org). They are in a similar position, hanging onto wonderful educational content that is trapped in an obsolete format. In some cases they have the only extant copies, and in some cases, the copyright status is utterly unclear -- the artists are long gone, the publishers defunct, the negatives lost or destroyed. Even Google got into trouble when they tried to digitize and make freely-available all of the out-of-print books. It's a huge mess. Do not know what can be done about it :(
Old enough doesn't even matter. NASA stuff (and anything else from the government) is public domain from the start. (This is a particular problem with C-Span content. Videos of congress don't get copyright protection, but once a news organization broadcasts something using C-Span content, they'll totally use the UA-cam claim system on anyone that uses that clip. Totally illegal, but not worth pursuing.)
Wish I knew what to say about your issues attracting viewers -- relying on UA-cam's algorithm is probably not a good plan -- you need to promote your channel elsewhere, but obviously that's easier said than done.
Stuff by the US Government are supposed to be in the public domain and uncopyrightable. Ever heard of dBase II/III/IV? Ashton-Tate created it, and eventually Borland bought it from them. Then the US Government got involved, and it turns out that the original code was a US Govt project, so it was uncopyrightable. Borland and Ashton-Tate both basically had a hugely popular application that suddenly, overnight, was rendered public domain and no longer their property. Anyone could use the xBase code in their own products. That spawned systems like Foxbase, Foxpro, Clipper, Force IV, and other xBase-derived systems. All they had to do was completely rewrite the code to make it unique, and they could copyright THAT. These people who are slamming the NASA footage with copyright claims are claiming to own something they can't possibly own, and it's just not right.
Hi Fran. Understood your UA-cam rant. I have to wonder though if some of the subscriber issues is just the dwindling number of tinker types today. Now I'm in my early 50s, I remember or have actually used some of the gizmos you feature on your channel, love it! Now I'm also a ham radio nerd of ~30 yrs. actually built some of my guitar effects (Tom Scholz was my idol), so I naturally drifted into your orbit. I'm in engineering (instrumentation electronics) and I don't see the hardware-savvy types coming along. Engineering grads are software savvy, very little hardware understanding. Not a cut against them, they are bright but building stuff is just not part of their interests. There are lots of Raspberry Pii and Arduino YT pages, that's saturated. Plus the content that is "popular" on YT seems to be mindless drama and jiggle....nobody seems to want to actually learn anything anymore. So I bet YT just caters to what sells, not to educational and fun content like yours. So yeah I'm sounding more like an old timer every day it seems LOL. FWIW I've enjoyed your content and so many of those gadgets bring back good memories for me, thank you.
@@zizmares PeerTube might become a competitor one day. It's decentralised, so there's no central entity that can blacklist videos, do one-click copyright claims and stuff. It's a collection of lots and lots of servers, all interconnected and independently managed by completely different people (and all with slightly varying rules). But the best thing is: You could set up your own PeerTube server and connect it to the rest of the network. And even if all other systems blacklist your videos (which is highly unlikely), they would still be visible on your own servers.
What we need is to crack the barrier to multicasting from a residential connection. It's a technical barrier. Broadcast a stream that millions can connect to at once.
@@mbirth That still involves seeding the channel with lots of P2P computer nodes. This is why BitChute often just buffers instead of playing the video. I've stopped trying to watch content on BitChute because the videos frequently won't play after a reasonable wait. What I'm talking about here is making a stream from your home residential computer and crafting the code so that when each viewer connects, it's an open stream to be tapped, not a new private connection. The idea is making the stream public so one stream, many viewers.
I try to run rare or out of print footage & movies in public domain. But some crappy band burns a CD with a just a few sound effects or brief audio clips from the footage with their music onto their "copyrighted" CD, then turn around & make copyright claims against everyone running the old footage. And UA-cam almost always take the side of the claimant. I even got a strike trying to fight a dispute about well documented public domain material. How could the audio in my 1928 footage possibly infringe on their 2015 rap CD? Then I ran some public domain US Air Force military footage, & got some Russian copyright company claim rights to it. Played Mozart & Bach of me playing on a pipe organ in a church I that I was working on, & got a dozen copyright claims against that too. Nobody owns rights to Mozart, or my own performance of it.

I've had so much stuff demonetized by UA-cam (unfairly) I've decided to put *anything* they demonetize on that server and thus it will be totally beyond the reach of the copyright trolls.
For new subs, you could do a series, meaning one video every couple months, about stuff the new viewers would find interesting. I'm just an old viewer but I see guys making extreme lasers, water cooled LEDs on drones, wacky stuff like Electric Boom. I don't mean to copy anyone but do what you love and be interesting to this generation. If you use a soldering iron, put an affiliate amazon in the description and get 50 cents from the sell of that, put your merchandise (T-shirts and your swag) on the wall. Do you have access to a kid, meaning 16-21 yr old, to have on the show. Have her/him build a FPV drone and fly it, and build/invent stuff that this generation wants to build and do a song together. Your present content is exactly what I like because your work station is how mine would look like, your projects are stuff my generation think about. Your pace is refreshing to me as someone who never watches TV and spends all my entertainment time online. But I am becoming more like these kids and find myself clicking forward on videos or watching them at 125%. I don't want content like yours to disappear, people are so disposable now and it is getting worse. I would like YT to see competition to force them to be what they were when they knew they needed creators. I have experienced the copywrite hammer several times. Music/sounds that are copywrite free today will be sold to someone then they will take your earnings. Artist that don't care will die or sell their stuff to a corporation then you get a strike. I had a video where I put headphones on and you would hear a very little sound of the song that played for 2 seconds while other louder sounds were going, and some corporation flagged me. If BBC is claiming they they own the copyright, and that can be proved illegal, then I think you can sue them for damages, and/or at least get an injunction.
Copyright on UA-cam is so strange... I tried monetizing my channel for a while, but the flags restrained me from being as creative as I wanted, so I took monetization away. Since then, I find I have much more freedom to edit the way I want, and let the copyright owners flag away. But what really buffaloes me are the copyright restriction flags. The owners just don't want their work used period, so they restrict it worldwide. What's really odd is, some of the less than 10 second clips of copyright content I've used, are just simple stuff, that you'd never expect to be restricted. Stuff like 3 second snips from Saturday Night Live, they're so bad about it I've stopped using anything from SNL... And I totally understand the total weirdness of UA-cam and how they circulate a channel within the vast number of people on it. I seriously think it's a money game. The big channels get bigger, because they pay Google to make sure they show up in searches and suggested videos. These mega channels are produced by large production companies, and are like the NBC, CBS, & ABC production companies of UA-cam. They're bank rolled by investors, and have huge pull with Google, because of the money that exchanges hands. If you're a smaller channel, like yours, and one of these companies takes notice of you, you're set to take off. If you don't, then you're left trying to make it as best as you can, because the way it works in UA-cam is, you either get lost in the shuffle, or you're channel gets the top tier when being searched. I know many will disagree with me, and it really doesn't matter, because I create on UA-cam to have fun, and be creative. I've just witnessed over the years what has happened since the beginning, and it's pretty sad the way things have gone. I see really cool creative channels like yours struggle so hard, while other channels that leave me scratching my head leap from 10k, to 100k, to over a million in just a few months. It used to be that if you were creative, and had quality content, you had a chance on UA-cam. Since Google took it over, the rules have changed, and now, only well backed conglomerate's get the backing and search hits, while the rest are left in the dust. I'm so glad that creators like yourself have Patreon to help where Google has left you high and dry. God bless, and good luck!
UA-cam is hard imo! In order to continue to get an increase in subs, I've found you have to do two videos a week. If you have a gap for a week or two, everything starts to drop. It's hard to maintain Patreon support too. When I lost my job back in October I had a lot of support from people via Patreon, which secured my channel - but like you I have seen the pledges drop gradually and not increase, despite having the same or more Patrons. I am getting to that point again where I am thinking I cannot continue due to the way things stand and may need to just stop everything and focus on things outside of UA-cam.
UA-cam constantly suggests channels that I'm already subscribed to. Like "Great suggestion! I never would have thought about watching the channels I've subbed!"

It really is a shame stuff like this is being taken down. I feel like there is an active force against archiving on youtube. Making this available for non-monetized viewing on here should fall under fair use. I have had so many archive channels I have been subscribed to permabanned aver this bs. It breaks my heart.
I'm kinda new but I love your vibe. You seem like a really cool, knowledgeable, down-to-earth person. I can tell you what I like in Science youtube: quality over quantity. Don't stress trying to pound out video after video! I like quick vids on quick concepts and long vids on engaging concepts. I like videos driven by ideas. I think it'd be cool for you to tour a museum, or take us into the manufacturing process itself. You can use youtube shorts to boost viewership. Don't be afraid to clickbait- it'll never be as annoying as Action Lab's. Collaborate with other small youtubers like Dom Burgess to cross audiences.
Who owns the library? Well, no, publishers cannot stop you from reading books, that has nothing to do with copyright. However, if you take a book from the library, copy it and distribute it, then yeah, the publishers would probably have an issue with that. That is essentially what you're doing here, you're distributing copyrighted material. Well, that's the second question, is it copyrighted? If it is fully NASA material then no it is not copyrighted, because everything NASA publishes is in the public domain and claims of its copyright is fraudulent. However, depending on what has been done with that material before it was put on the laserdiscs it may have ended up being copyrighted again. Like writing music using sounds/data from NASA missions for instance, or painting a painting based on a space photograph. There are many examples. Either way, UA-cam is really the wrong platform for the preservation of this kind of material. Archive dot org would be a much better outlet, and I would encourage you to upload it there.
Glad I wasn't the only one to balk at that analogy. I'd love to see such things be free/public domain/whatever, but under existing law, that's just not the reality. Libraries are free of charge to use, though, in pretty much every United States municipality that has a public one (at least as far as I know)... but they'll still use DRM, etc.

What ever you do, don't blame yourself. In what way did you change what you were doing to cause this? There are several UA-camrs that are running into the same situation and asking the same questions (check out some of Rick Beato's rants). What you present is an educational channel which AFAIK should allow "fair use" of some copyrighted material (they will still take you down but who said life is fair? ). I realize you situation isn't exactly the same but Rick has been consulted by congress about what to do with streaming content. I don't know but he may have some direction or ideas. The accuser doesn't have to show ownership? I thought in any copyright claim, you would have to show you had legal ownership of the material...what am I overlooking ?
It seems the copyright landscape is tilted in favor of the artist/creator in order to encourage more creativity. And CR laws differ internationally. At least in US law, any new creation (including things like this BBC compilation) are automatically given copyrighted status unless the creator says otherwise. Hence, "ownership" is automatic; you don't have to go to some agency and get an ownership certificate. Therefore, "showing ownership" isn't as simple as showing the deed to your house or title to your car.
Fran, there is always resistance to growth, you have to innovate and adapt. I can't tell you what to do, "you have to do you." but think about a collaboration. Suggestions are code.org, or if you can't collaborate do a review of coding lessons. What about a raspberry pi project? What about showing the world how to setup a PI octoprint server and explaining how it all works. What about helping a FIRST Robotics team? These videos won't require weeks, but a day here and a day there and you can do some collaborating while you work on your BIG DESIGN projects. Just think if you could collaborate with Louis Rossmann or Linus Tech Tips. What about jumping on the right to repair bandwagon, that is hot right now. You could even offer to do some repairs on devices that people couldn't otherwise get repaired (keyboards, AMPS, plasma TV) . Fran saving the world from e-waste. Collaborating even superficially or in a one-sided manner (and possibly going on tour) will get your channel cross pollinated with other groups, UA-cam artists, and channels and more subscribers. In my opinion, you have narrowed your focus too much and need to expand and see what gets your to 250,000 or 500,000 subscribers. Just hiding out in the Franlab doesn't seem like it is going to get you where you want to go.

I've sent you a couple of messages in the past few days and I want to support you. I'm retired and worked on McIntosh power amplifiers in my deep, long background. You can sell them and keep the profits to help your channel - to hell with subscribing and your losing so much of what you deserve. RE: The issues of your channel overall... I hear you about the "job situation" loud and clear. Especially given your personal history and marginalized status, this is super rough territory to traverse, and you have my utmost sympathies there. With regards to your channel/Patreon/subscribers overall, that doesn't sound like fun. I can offer some minor critiques that may help you? - I suspect part of your issue is that your channel content is simply too wide ranging. It's hard to know exactly what a Patreon is supporting exactly. I'd suggest your channel needs to regain focus, with less tangents. I know I have been watching a LOT less lately because not much has personally interested me since the latch project. - Consider multiple channels for tangents/diversification. A channel for kit teardowns? A channel for builds? A channel for Laserdisc uploads? A channel for rants? Some kind of separation could help keep your main channels on topic better. (See, LGR, LinusTechTips, etc), as well as limit demonetization and channel strike liability. - When you do big projects, consider a shorter 20-25 minute summary type video, perhaps with time lapses. The multi-part videos are neat, but people may be passing them because it takes so long to watch it all. I'm a busy mom, and I find myself passing up on some of your projects despite my interest because it's just too long. The Heathkit GC-1006 project is one such build. 3.5 hours long is just WAY too much footage to watch. A 20-25 minute summary version would've been easier to digest, and may attract more views. Consider offering the longer build videos only to Patreon subscribers first, as you build it. THEN, release a condensed version to UA-cam, THEN post the longer videos as deeper content AFTER the summary video. You can still break it into multiple part summary videos if it's taking longer than a week as longer term status updates, but overall, I think some of your content is just too long for many of us to be able to enjoy, even when the subject is interesting. - I do think that you make negative comments, bring up the lab/UA-cam issues, etc more than you realize. It's not that you're wrong, but by intermixing the content into the main channel here as you have, especially with 25 minute long videos like this, it does not instill confidence in viewers. It's all perception. You may be right the vast majority of the time, but people are perceiving it as negativity and constant. Hence, why I suggested creating a separate channel for content like that so that it is separated out of the main subscriber stream. You should be able to rant! Some of us enjoy your rants! However, perception is king on UA-cam, for better or for worse. - Speaking of perception, I don't know what it is exactly, and I can't pin my finger on it, but something about your videos seems to create a perception that you have a lot of unnecessary stuff/hoarded stuff/excessive space. I personally understand what's going on, and I know how much space using equipment and keeping supplies takes. For what you're trying to do, I don't think it's excessive at all. Consider though that much of your audience has MUCH less space to work in on average. For example, I barely have a dining room table available, with one small rolling rack in the house, a small desk for my old computers (IBM 5160, Gateway Profile 1.5, etc), and one tiny shelf in a tiny shed. On average, most people barely have a partial garage or single basement room to use and one workbench. So, I think that one of the problems of splitting your space is that by nature, you have to refer to having another space now that it's split, but that also can sound over the top when casually mentioned, through no fault of your own. Referring to multiple desk spaces sounds outright luxurious. I don't know how to rectify it, but again, it's a perception thing. Consider ways to alter your discussions of your other desks/workspaces/lab. I hope that didn't come off too strong or negative. I want you to succeed girl!!! Love ya Fran! You're a hero to me!
I'd say revisit the kit idea, especially with covid going on. I've personally bought a lot of $50-350 kits in the last couple of months. Of course these are kind of advanced kits. The $50 kits are eurorack synthesizer modules that would sell for $2-300 if factory made. The $350 kit is a 500 series module that replicates an API equalizer from the Huntington, Long Island era of the company. Their nearest current model is $650. Not sure what a Fran Lab kit would be? But I think for avid tinkerers $50 for a kit isn't a hard sell. Also, you can certainly boost your margins by sourcing from Tayda Electronics in Thailand. As far as intellectual property, I recently had a live stream on youtube taken down mid stream for copyright violation. Thing is, all of the video footage was 100% shot by me. And the audio was a live improvisation by me. No samples, just drum machines and synthesizers as god intended.

Fran, I'm just now seeing this video. I've been subscribed for a good while. I however didn't know to ring the bell, at that time. That is something I've corrected. Now, I will be seeing more of your awesome videos. I do have one suggestion that may work for you. I think it has worked well for Adam Booth (Abom79 here on UA-cam) as well as others. That is, get with one of the t-shirt printing houses, like Tee Spring. I can't remember off hand what company Abom79 uses. Another option, see if you can collaborate with some of the other UA-cam creators. That may give a major boost to your channel and theirs. I hope things start looking up for you, soon.
And at the same time, I see blatant copyright theft all over UA-cam (of current content, still being broadcast or sold on physical media) with channel ident logos blurred and so on, yet somehow the videos stay up, there's no easy way of informing the rights holders that this is happening, because often the production companies intentionally don't publish contact details.
In principle, the potential of making money from this comes up when demand is seen to exist. It would make sense to, instead of just blocking the content, per default first switch the content to monetized on the open video streaming platform (here: UA-cam) and collect the earnings for the detected rights holder to pick up. This party could then also react by calling for an individual deal with the uploader. A number of standard templates could be offered by the platform simplify the process. This would lead to a win-win situation more often than not, probably.

Now if you give me some and I decode the genome of that strain guess what? I now own that genome sequence and can legally stop you from reproducing or altering that genome in any way. That is how big companies own seed stock. Simply decoding a genome gives them rights. If they decode your genome or any part of it they can now prevent you from altering it without their direct consent. They are not obligated to give that consent.

I mostly use Camtasia Studio to edit and prepare my software development videos, and it has a bunch of copyright free / royalty free music included with it. But when I use more than 10-20 seconds of that music for my UA-cam videos, they are pinged with a Copyright Claim. It's crazy ! Copyright Claims are way out-of-control on UA-cam. Luckily (??), my channel is way too small to ever get monetized. :) Hang in there Fran, you're doing a great job ! :)
I always thought that information stored in a library was "Public Domain", makes you wonder if those who are copyrighting all the stuff on those laser discs actually intended it to be viewed by the public or not, if not, they shouldn't have bothered making those laser discs in the first place, I think it's getting to the point where copyright laws are being abused for ulterior motives.
I discovered to my surprise that EMI owns the rights to all of Martin Luther King, Jr. speeches when I conference I was cameraman on played a short clip from the civil rights campaigns. The system is truly a disgusting cash cow for unscrupulous companies.

It seems everyone but you owns your videos. Fran said the content on those laserdiscs is not available anywhere else. Not on DVD, not on TV maybe on some obscure VHS tape somewhere. If anyone owns it, its NASA, certainly not the BBC. There are ways to fool the content ID system. Slow it down, put a border around the video, split it up into parts.

@@mikethebloodthirsty Algorithms are used by Google because 1) they can, 2) Google is too lazy to hire people to actually review the content and 3) It's the fastest way to "detect" infringement. Unfortunately, UA-cam's own algorithmic detection is ripe for abuse. Today, that's mostly how it's used. People create "content holder" accounts and then flag anything and everything they possibly can. The Multi-Channel Networks (MCNs) are mostly responsible for this. If you are a channel owner and join an MCN, everything you upload becomes listed under the content ID matching system, even if it's not valid content or content that you don't actually own.
I've had many copyright claims made on videos that make no sense strictly because a channel (which was part of an MCN) uploaded a video that contained the same cutscene as all other people will see on a play through. This then causes a copyright claim due to content ID matching for a channel who has no valid claim on that content. UA-cam's "detection" system is far too simplistic and is easily gamed. And yet, Google definitely knows this and does nothing about it.

We went from short commercials we could skip to now having a minimum of two commercials at beginning and can’t skip the first one. THEN, you might have a advertisement every 5 minutes. I’ve literally watched a 25 minute instructional video that had 5 different advertisement breaks in it...

The problem is that AI or artificial intelligence has advanced to a point of availability that it is easier and easier for more markets and people to access it. This leads to powerful tools in the hands of idiots who trust technology over common sense.
In shot, AI is allowing morons to feel as confident as professionals. As this happens, you will find people or organizations making spurious claims and youtube is afraid to error in any way that would expose them to liability. This copyright clampdown really started about the time Cox lost and was liable for 1 billion dollars to various recording labels.

I have TWO channels over the 150K sub mark and I'm still living hand-to-mouth. Making UA-cam a full-time gig is *NOT* an easy path. On the up-side, UA-cam themselves are doing "very nicely thank you" with ad revenues of $15b, up from $11b a year ago. Creators are hurting but YT isn't.

My other channel go deleted and I filed about half a dozen appeals over about 6 moths and I just go it back the other day, so thats cool. And I don't even have content on it. But I was banned off of youtube before I ever even uploaded. They never told me WHY i got suspended. Just that I violated terms of service and their harassment policy.
I kind of think it was for posting a link to a website off of youtube. Because I don't use strong language or anything unless its a channel and comment section that already has that type of thing. In some of my discussions in youtube comment sections every now and again I might post a link to an article or news page and thats against terms of service apparently. So thats my best guess. But I never got any sort of warning. Just went to the grocery store, got back, and my channel was banned. I was working on videos at the time and was told I was not allowed on the platform. I couldn't even log onto another account if I was on google chrome. I had to switch back to using firefox to even log into my back up account. But i was blocked from even trying to start a channel in the future. So atleast I got my channel back and the right to be a potential creator, but the nature of my content is critical so it really does make me worry about the problems i will face in the future.

I don't think UA-cam is necessarily mature yet. This may become the go to tv of the future, and perhaps revenue for channels will improve. We'll have to see.
@@jc.1191 Sorry but revenues for channels are about to take a dive. YT is giving itself permission to put ads on *all* videos, even non-monetized channels. That means they'll have a glut of ad-space and the laws of supply & demand dictate that this will see a dramatic fall in the price of advertising -- thus the amount that partner channels receive. Once again, YT wins, content creators lose :-( I made a video about this recently.
The good thing is, at least you uploaded them to Patreon, and not YT. You would've gotten copyright strikes. YT likes to push big channels, it's really obvious when you see the trending list.....A popular channel (mostly the "goof off" or "family" type that don't help viewers save money or educate them)can have 250K views in 12 hours and be "Trending", meanwhile you or I can have more views for a video in that same time frame, and you won't be on the trending list. I've only been on the list twice. Smaller channels videos get buried way down the search results. I've had viewers tell me many times over the years, I was searching for a particular DIY repair video, and watched 10-20 first, and when they found mine 2 pages down, it was the best and they couldn't figure out why it wasn't at the top. YT can be very frustrating.
The Space Odyssey panel was actually one of the videos that I really enjoyed watching. You shouldn't put too much attention to the growth. The viewers you get from shallow content most likely won't be very engaged and will less likely support you on Patreon. I have the exact same experience. I see selling kits more like a community service. Nevertheless, the margins were still ok to finance all the hardware I needed and a new editing PC last year. I create the boards for my projects anyways so I just order a few more. A sold batch pays for the next batches. Taking paid sponsorships might take some financial pressure from you. The viewers won't mind. Keep it up!

There's nothing that says you can't monetize public domain materials. Unfortunately, what Fran attempted to post isn't in the public domain. The copyrights on that LD compilation haven't yet expired. This means that placing a copy onto UA-cam likely constituted unauthorized duplication of that compilation.
So... here's the misnomer. Regardless of whether or not you make money, copyrights remain valid to the copyright holder. It's not whether you make money, it's the act of unauthorized copying / duplication that is considered infringement. Placing a copy on UA-cam violates "copy" + "rights" (i.e, copyrights).
If, as a copyright holder, you don't ask for removal of all unauthorized copies, that's as good as saying it _is_ a valid copy. The act of not requesting removal of unauthorized copies dilutes your copyright and makes your claims weaker in the future. If you wish to retain copyrights over your material, you must be diligent in asking for removal of all unauthorized copies... else, you may lose your copyright over that material.

Hi Fran. I have led a life of manufacturing clothing and costumes and of course all of the trials and tribulations are very similar to your manufacturing issues. However, there may be another idea... after 20 years, I eventually realized that making and selling unique or very small run, high priced items was much easier to keep up with and required very little capital investment. Your notoriety could focus your audience as buyers and really help launch this forward. We would all love watching you make limited-run, unique, expensive "toys" or custom useful items that are available to bid /purchase or custom order. Since there is no way to compete with large manufacturers, just leave them in the dust and follow the path of the Haute Couturiers: special, unique and VERY expensive. Love your channel!!!
You are right, cheap kits is mugs game. Even expensive high margin kits are still a PITA time sink.
I've done the numbers - a few times - and it always comes up the same. I was going to do the Sputnik reproduction kit but it would have been a $40 item, if you printed your own case!

So that opens up to constantly being in contact with people trying to build a complex product with limited soldering skills for sometime after the product has shipped and the cash been spent. I've spend over 2 years developing the firmware, designing a PCB and aluminium case and still nowhere near market. You are right manufacturing your own product is a mugs game, I hope to get my box of tricks out as a niche product but it highly unlikely to make me any money for the time and effort put in.

I quit paying the BBC license fee when I quit watching TV for UA-cam two years ago, I now pay the same amount per month via Patrion to my favourite channels. I give twice as much to Fran as I do to others because her channel is twice as awesome. Enjoy the break Fran, burnout is hard but you'll get there.

You should upload these discs to the Internet Archive. They don't have any automated copyright bots (though the downside is that if content uploaded on your account gets too many manual takedown requests they'll just purge everything you've uploaded, and your account, with no recourse).

I have uploaded quite a bit of content to the Internet Archive. All of it is public domain. Copyright has been claimed in a couple of cases, even when the original copyright was owned by the UK Government and I have their authority to publish it!

I work for NASA as an animator. I create a spacecraft piece and put it out through normal channels. Free for use by the public. Later, a company makes a video using it. I cannot by law upload or use it in that edited and copywritten form, even though it would not exist without me.
Yes! Thank you! You can make treatments of public domain material and it would fall under copyright. Even editing a video in a certain way is such a treatment, and it is likely why these are under copyright. Though, I don't understand why the BBC would be claiming copyright, could be some license transfers and such going on.
@@JamesMears76 then you have to file a counterclaim, and that's when it gets dicey, and if the company pushes back on its fraudulent claim then you could end up with a strike against your channel, or a long time in civil courts trying to clear it up. The system is broken, largely because UA-cam has decided it will not act as an arbiter in these situations. Read up on the situation around the copyright journey the channel h3h3 had to deal with, which ended up in a lawsuit, which they won. Still, months and months of work, and money and stress involved.
That sounds to me like, it's lawful to plagiarise and call it your own . I live in UK but don't like nasty tactics. I do however like Fran.
@@stephenpwilson1930 the question is whether this specific situation is nasty tactics though. The source material from NASA is obviously in the public domain. But if I take that material and alter it in any way (even things like color grading, or editing the timing, anything) that new interpretation is copyrighted to me, similarly how this material would be copyrighted to whoever made the laserdiscs. For you to use my material would be in breach of the copyright, you would have to go back to the NASA source material and publish that to be on the right side of copyright legislation. This extends to just about anything. Films like Nosferatu are in the public domain, so you can take that and recut it into a short film, for instance, and I cannot take that recut that you made and publish it like my own, even though I could do that with the original Nosferatu movie.
A better license would be for the NASA material to be licensed under Creative Commons Share Alike, which requires the new material to be shared under the same license, meaning anyone could use the derivatives as well. However, that would require a major change in operation for copyright legislation in the US, since the current laws were made before Creative Commons was ever thought up.

Fran, I can say that as a long time subscriber that UA-cam's algorithms will show me things that I am not interested in so much more often than YOUR videos that I actually SUBSCRIBE to. You're not letting us down, it's the media you're on (UA-cam) that is. Keep on keepin' on! I know it has to be tough, and there are probably times that you question going on, but you mean so much to so many people. I know this because your videos have been a source of entertainment and delight for this old EE for many years.
You're 99% right about manufacturing, too, and the kit economy is not only a whole lot of work but minimal margins. However, I think people would pay $60 (or more) for a kit. Grab an old Heathkit catalog from the late 70s or early 80s and check the prices on some of their stuff... then triple it to adjust for inflation for today's dollars. Granted, todays maker market is different than the amateur radio/hobbyist computer market of those days and Heathkit is probably not the best poster child for anything, but I think you get the idea.

I'm a new subber, and I have almost never seen a suggestion from YT to watch your videos. YT sucks more all the time. Other channels I regularly watch have gone to another forum to escape the crap that YT slings.
Copyright laws need a worldwide reform! UA-cam especially needs to scrap their entire system and start over.
Without the youtube system there may well be nothing...except endless lawsuits.
I guess I can echo what some others are saying here - you have to use some other streaming service other than youtube.
There are several to choose from - I ran across one earlier today on a different youtube channel, where the guy was dealing with fair-use 6-second limits when discussing music theory - he uses Nebula. I haven't even signed up yet - it just happened that youtube recommended a music theory video after yours (who the hell knows why). Now it happens that I found that interesting. I don't know if I even will sign up, and there are other streaming services out there.
The monetization and rating algorithms are entirely a separate issue, and I know others are also dissatisfied with youtube. Don't know what the answer is.

@TheCessnaDriver Eventually, Archive.org will be forced to succumb to RIAA and MPAA pressures, forcing them to cave in and perform DMCA takedowns. For now, Archive.org has been quietly out of reach of Hollywood. At some point, they won't be and there _will_ come legal pressures to either get them to comply with alleged copyright holder claims or face losing their entire domain by their domain registrar. Domain registrars don't take kindly to domain holders who willfully break the domain registrar's own terms and conditions. Domain registrars are then more than willing to suspend domains for breaking said terms and conditions. Archive.org needs to be careful.
@@abigguitar - there's no reason to be defeatist about this. There could be no greater difference in policy than between UA-cam and Archive.org. The latter will fight false copyright claims and fight to keep things lawfully in the public domain. UA-cam just wants to make money, and thus provides a venue for those who steal from the public domain, and then take a cut from the add revenue. Again, archive.org fights for public domain, UA-cam is a major accomplice to the criminal gangs stealing from it.

The correct action would be to upload them to The Pirate Bay where they can never be taken down. In that sense, The Pirate Bay is actually the greatest internet archive in existence!
This reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend a few weeks ago about UA-cam and what, or more specifically who, it's really for. Despite often being trumpeted as a platform for independent content creators, it isn't, it's for big business to further its own ends and make itself even wealthier, and the longer UA-cam exists, the fewer opportunities it provides for the independent creator as they get swamped by content from huge media conglomerates who are responsible for the vast majority of the most viewed UA-cam content now. These companies know the cost of everything but the value of nothing, and in the market society information and knowledge and creativity is only valued if it can be profited from by some fatcat.
It's harder to get more attention on UA-cam these days because there's so many more people doing it, and doing it full time. So there's just that much more high quality content trying to get everyone's attention. Very different from how it was five years ago.
I wouldn't call it *quality* content so much as there's just plain content. True the budget for a lot of channels are growing so there's a lot of "flash" but as far as actual quality content, IMHO, is really hit or miss.
There's channels I sub/watch that I think are quality but almost all of them have been in my subs for a very long time. That's because as soon as I find one I sub, BUT, that honestly doesn't come around all that much. At least for the amount of subjects I'm interested in.

UA-cam is just plain broken. I miss videos from my favorite channels all the time. I generally have youtube auto-playing in my office all day as I work. Instead of showing me new content from the channels that I'm subscribed to, it often insists on showing me old videos that I have already seen (sometimes just earlier in the day) and other random stuff. Obviously this means that my favorite channels aren't getting paid.
OMG yes. The repeated videos I've already watched is insane these days. Alternately, I get presented with weird content I don't want to see at all. Add to that the fact that there is no way to actually block channels I personally find useless or disgusting... ugh

Never use automatic play. The AI behind the scenes does not know you, and can't be bothered to get to know you, if it is even cabable in some limited way. Instead, it shows you things that happened to be watched by others who had some similar viewing to yours, which has the net effect of the AI 'thinking' you are like those other people in your tastes, which is mostly untrue. But the implied similarity persists, and you will continue to get things you are not interested in, and may violently dislike. And if you clear your UA-cam history, it is no better, because then the machine has NO idea about what you have shown you like. If the YT AI is going to remember everything, it could at least make it easier to find JUST the things you have watched, in a special list, and just the things you have liked in another list, and similarly for disliked, commented on, etc. But noooooo, that would be too useful, too human-friendly. :/
Try Nebula for sure lots of good youtubers like Issac Arthur and Joe Scott have signed on with similar frustrations. Also We have had similar problems with youtube... We have deals with many minor and most major labels for broadcasting music, however youtube live doesn't have a proper appeal. There is no way to even tell them or send them said agreements. It's hard to argue with bot-police, and there is no one to contact (at least for us). Good luck and keep the great content coming! You have massive skills, If you want a semi high paying job in welding, construction, electrical/mechanical engineering, aviation, etc....here in Vegas, I am pretty sure it would be 123, however museums are a bit tough.

Oh Fran! SO very sorry to hear of this crap! UA-cam has gotten pretty strict/tight/cheap lately, while still screwing up accounts and how content is stored.
I almost started my own channel, but after reading horror stories I decided not to. They take TONS of time to produce content, and there is some pretty awful/stupid/meaningless content that seems to have a large following for some unknown reason.
I would love to contribute more, but I am financially strapped so I do what I can, but your channel is worth WAY more than I can give, and I can only wish the best for you.
I will continue to watch and donate what I can because you do try and create excellent content.
I just hope you don't fall apart and do take some time away from youtube as it has become alot for you and you DO need a break!

I remember when I used over 100 years old public domain film material in some video for my Lo-Fi ambient stuff and soon I got copyright strike from some record label. I did the research and found out they had one music video on their channel that used material from the same pd film. I contacted UA-cam and the claim was removed, but after that I also removed my video because I knew someone else may strike it again. it would have been too much work compared to fact that my video gets only few views per year.
In other words. That automated copyrigt strike thing just doesn't work right
It seems there's too much power in the hands of the copyright owner. OTOH, I see a lot of small artists getting their original (copyrighted) works ripped off & there's no one who will help make it stop. If you don't own lawyers & a deep litigation fund, you're out in the cold.

Yeah, post DMCA you effectively have no appeals process and no recourse. No process. If it's old enough, it should be public domain. Your video on the Hollywood warehouse fire makes it crystal clear that we are going to *lose* important cultural works because of this.
I used to volunteer for a 16mm educational film archive (afana.org). They are in a similar position, hanging onto wonderful educational content that is trapped in an obsolete format. In some cases they have the only extant copies, and in some cases, the copyright status is utterly unclear -- the artists are long gone, the publishers defunct, the negatives lost or destroyed.
Even Google got into trouble when they tried to digitize and make freely-available all of the out-of-print books. It's a huge mess. Do not know what can be done about it :(
Old enough doesn't even matter. NASA stuff (and anything else from the government) is public domain from the start. (This is a particular problem with C-Span content. Videos of congress don't get copyright protection, but once a news organization broadcasts something using C-Span content, they'll totally use the UA-cam claim system on anyone that uses that clip. Totally illegal, but not worth pursuing.)
Wish I knew what to say about your issues attracting viewers -- relying on UA-cam's algorithm is probably not a good plan -- you need to promote your channel elsewhere, but obviously that's easier said than done.
Stuff by the US Government are supposed to be in the public domain and uncopyrightable. Ever heard of dBase II/III/IV? Ashton-Tate created it, and eventually Borland bought it from them. Then the US Government got involved, and it turns out that the original code was a US Govt project, so it was uncopyrightable. Borland and Ashton-Tate both basically had a hugely popular application that suddenly, overnight, was rendered public domain and no longer their property. Anyone could use the xBase code in their own products. That spawned systems like Foxbase, Foxpro, Clipper, Force IV, and other xBase-derived systems. All they had to do was completely rewrite the code to make it unique, and they could copyright THAT.
These people who are slamming the NASA footage with copyright claims are claiming to own something they can't possibly own, and it's just not right.

Hi Fran. Understood your UA-cam rant. I have to wonder though if some of the subscriber issues is just the dwindling number of tinker types today. Now I'm in my early 50s, I remember or have actually used some of the gizmos you feature on your channel, love it! Now I'm also a ham radio nerd of ~30 yrs. actually built some of my guitar effects (Tom Scholz was my idol), so I naturally drifted into your orbit. I'm in engineering (instrumentation electronics) and I don't see the hardware-savvy types coming along. Engineering grads are software savvy, very little hardware understanding. Not a cut against them, they are bright but building stuff is just not part of their interests. There are lots of Raspberry Pii and Arduino YT pages, that's saturated. Plus the content that is "popular" on YT seems to be mindless drama and jiggle....nobody seems to want to actually learn anything anymore. So I bet YT just caters to what sells, not to educational and fun content like yours. So yeah I'm sounding more like an old timer every day it seems LOL. FWIW I've enjoyed your content and so many of those gadgets bring back good memories for me, thank you.

@@zizmares PeerTube might become a competitor one day. It's decentralised, so there's no central entity that can blacklist videos, do one-click copyright claims and stuff. It's a collection of lots and lots of servers, all interconnected and independently managed by completely different people (and all with slightly varying rules). But the best thing is: You could set up your own PeerTube server and connect it to the rest of the network. And even if all other systems blacklist your videos (which is highly unlikely), they would still be visible on your own servers.
What we need is to crack the barrier to multicasting from a residential connection. It's a technical barrier. Broadcast a stream that millions can connect to at once.
@@basspig PeerTube solves that with the player. Each player re-distributes the video to other people. Similar to how Torrents work.
@@mbirth That still involves seeding the channel with lots of P2P computer nodes. This is why BitChute often just buffers instead of playing the video. I've stopped trying to watch content on BitChute because the videos frequently won't play after a reasonable wait.
What I'm talking about here is making a stream from your home residential computer and crafting the code so that when each viewer connects, it's an open stream to be tapped, not a new private connection. The idea is making the stream public so one stream, many viewers.
I try to run rare or out of print footage & movies in public domain. But some crappy band burns a CD with a just a few sound effects or brief audio clips from the footage with their music onto their "copyrighted" CD, then turn around & make copyright claims against everyone running the old footage. And UA-cam almost always take the side of the claimant. I even got a strike trying to fight a dispute about well documented public domain material. How could the audio in my 1928 footage possibly infringe on their 2015 rap CD? Then I ran some public domain US Air Force military footage, & got some Russian copyright company claim rights to it. Played Mozart & Bach of me playing on a pipe organ in a church I that I was working on, & got a dozen copyright claims against that too. Nobody owns rights to Mozart, or my own performance of it.
I am presently in the process of setting up a video server that will be open to the world. If you want to send me any video you'd like hosted on this server then feel free. I've had so much stuff demonetized by UA-cam (unfairly) I've decided to put *anything* they demonetize on that server and thus it will be totally beyond the reach of the copyright trolls.

For new subs, you could do a series, meaning one video every couple months, about stuff the new viewers would find interesting. I'm just an old viewer but I see guys making extreme lasers, water cooled LEDs on drones, wacky stuff like Electric Boom. I don't mean to copy anyone but do what you love and be interesting to this generation. If you use a soldering iron, put an affiliate amazon in the description and get 50 cents from the sell of that, put your merchandise (T-shirts and your swag) on the wall. Do you have access to a kid, meaning 16-21 yr old, to have on the show. Have her/him build a FPV drone and fly it, and build/invent stuff that this generation wants to build and do a song together. Your present content is exactly what I like because your work station is how mine would look like, your projects are stuff my generation think about. Your pace is refreshing to me as someone who never watches TV and spends all my entertainment time online. But I am becoming more like these kids and find myself clicking forward on videos or watching them at 125%. I don't want content like yours to disappear, people are so disposable now and it is getting worse. I would like YT to see competition to force them to be what they were when they knew they needed creators. I have experienced the copywrite hammer several times. Music/sounds that are copywrite free today will be sold to someone then they will take your earnings. Artist that don't care will die or sell their stuff to a corporation then you get a strike. I had a video where I put headphones on and you would hear a very little sound of the song that played for 2 seconds while other louder sounds were going, and some corporation flagged me. In a World where you can buy Happy Birthday and get paid everytime someone sung 2 words of it with the notes. Sorry rant over. Good luck smart and talented lady.

A couple of things I learned years ago:
1. Work product of the US Government is NOT subject to copyright BY ANYONE.
2. Copyright law has a "fair use" exception. It is generally recognized that Educational purpose is a fair use.
I don't know a good way to go from there. One thought is, for relevant content, put the government notice up front. ("This original work © by Fran contains some work product of the US Government which is: A - not subject to copyright by anyone, and B - is used under the fair use rule for educational purposes."
I would not bet on that working though, some companies would like to figure out a way to make us pay for breathing.
BTW I am not a lawyer, not even close, and I've never even played one on TV. But I am an ex-government employee and ex-private-sector worker. Now I'm kept busy trying to stretch my Socialist Insecurity and VA Disability checks to cover a whole month.
If BBC is claiming they they own the copyright, and that can be proved illegal, then I think you can sue them for damages, and/or at least get an injunction.

Copyright on UA-cam is so strange...
I tried monetizing my channel for a while, but the flags restrained me from being as creative as I wanted, so I took monetization away.
Since then, I find I have much more freedom to edit the way I want, and let the copyright owners flag away.
But what really buffaloes me are the copyright restriction flags. The owners just don't want their work used period, so they restrict it worldwide.
What's really odd is, some of the less than 10 second clips of copyright content I've used, are just simple stuff, that you'd never expect to be restricted. Stuff like 3 second snips from Saturday Night Live, they're so bad about it I've stopped using anything from SNL...
And I totally understand the total weirdness of UA-cam and how they circulate a channel within the vast number of people on it.
I seriously think it's a money game. The big channels get bigger, because they pay Google to make sure they show up in searches and suggested videos.
These mega channels are produced by large production companies, and are like the NBC, CBS, & ABC production companies of UA-cam. They're bank rolled by investors, and have huge pull with Google, because of the money that exchanges hands.
If you're a smaller channel, like yours, and one of these companies takes notice of you, you're set to take off.
If you don't, then you're left trying to make it as best as you can, because the way it works in UA-cam is, you either get lost in the shuffle, or you're channel gets the top tier when being searched.
I know many will disagree with me, and it really doesn't matter, because I create on UA-cam to have fun, and be creative.
I've just witnessed over the years what has happened since the beginning, and it's pretty sad the way things have gone.
I see really cool creative channels like yours struggle so hard, while other channels that leave me scratching my head leap from 10k, to 100k, to over a million in just a few months.
It used to be that if you were creative, and had quality content, you had a chance on UA-cam.
Since Google took it over, the rules have changed, and now, only well backed conglomerate's get the backing and search hits, while the rest are left in the dust.
I'm so glad that creators like yourself have Patreon to help where Google has left you high and dry.

UA-cam is hard imo! In order to continue to get an increase in subs, I've found you have to do two videos a week. If you have a gap for a week or two, everything starts to drop. It's hard to maintain Patreon support too. When I lost my job back in October I had a lot of support from people via Patreon, which secured my channel - but like you I have seen the pledges drop gradually and not increase, despite having the same or more Patrons. I am getting to that point again where I am thinking I cannot continue due to the way things stand and may need to just stop everything and focus on things outside of UA-cam.
UA-cam constantly suggests channels that I'm already subscribed to.
Like "Great suggestion! I never would have thought about watching the channels I've subbed!"

Several companies claim copyright on the same videos? Surely I misunderstand!

It really is a shame stuff like this is being taken down. I feel like there is an active force against archiving on youtube. Making this available for non-monetized viewing on here should fall under fair use. I have had so many archive channels I have been subscribed to permabanned aver this bs. It breaks my heart.
The more youbTube monetizes it's own platform, the more it'll practice being a cop.
I'm kinda new but I love your vibe. You seem like a really cool, knowledgeable, down-to-earth person. I can tell you what I like in Science youtube: quality over quantity. Don't stress trying to pound out video after video! I like quick vids on quick concepts and long vids on engaging concepts. I like videos driven by ideas. I think it'd be cool for you to tour a museum, or take us into the manufacturing process itself. You can use youtube shorts to boost viewership. Don't be afraid to clickbait- it'll never be as annoying as Action Lab's. Collaborate with other small youtubers like Dom Burgess to cross audiences.
Who owns the library? Well, no, publishers cannot stop you from reading books, that has nothing to do with copyright. However, if you take a book from the library, copy it and distribute it, then yeah, the publishers would probably have an issue with that. That is essentially what you're doing here, you're distributing copyrighted material.
Well, that's the second question, is it copyrighted? If it is fully NASA material then no it is not copyrighted, because everything NASA publishes is in the public domain and claims of its copyright is fraudulent. However, depending on what has been done with that material before it was put on the laserdiscs it may have ended up being copyrighted again. Like writing music using sounds/data from NASA missions for instance, or painting a painting based on a space photograph. There are many examples. Either way, UA-cam is really the wrong platform for the preservation of this kind of material. Archive dot org would be a much better outlet, and I would encourage you to upload it there.
Glad I wasn't the only one to balk at that analogy. I'd love to see such things be free/public domain/whatever, but under existing law, that's just not the reality. Libraries are free of charge to use, though, in pretty much every United States municipality that has a public one (at least as far as I know)... but they'll still use DRM, etc.

What ever you do, don't blame yourself. In what way did you change what you were doing to cause this? There are several UA-camrs that are running into the same situation and asking the same questions (check out some of Rick Beato's rants). What you present is an educational channel which AFAIK should allow "fair use" of some copyrighted material (they will still take you down but who said life is fair? ). I realize you situation isn't exactly the same but Rick has been consulted by congress about what to do with streaming content. I don't know but he may have some direction or ideas. Love your channel and will keep watching anyway. Keep doing what your doing as long as it makes you happy :). Thank You!
The accuser doesn't have to show ownership? I thought in any copyright claim, you would have to show you had legal ownership of the material...what am I overlooking ?
In a court, yes. UA-cam isn't a courtroom. On UA-cam, you are guilty unless proven innocent -- if you even get that chance.
It seems the copyright landscape is tilted in favor of the artist/creator in order to encourage more creativity. And CR laws differ internationally. At least in US law, any new creation (including things like this BBC compilation) are automatically given copyrighted status unless the creator says otherwise. Hence, "ownership" is automatic; you don't have to go to some agency and get an ownership certificate. Therefore, "showing ownership" isn't as simple as showing the deed to your house or title to your car.

Yeah. trying to make a living off of UA-cam money is hard enough. Also having to pay for significant commercial space is definitely hard mode.
It is do-able, but cheap open commercial space anywhere near civilization in the US has pretty much evaporated in the last 5 years.
Fran, there is always resistance to growth, you have to innovate and adapt. I can't tell you what to do, "you have to do you." but think about a collaboration. Suggestions are code.org, or if you can't collaborate do a review of coding lessons. What about a raspberry pi project? What about showing the world how to setup a PI octoprint server and explaining how it all works. What about helping a FIRST Robotics team? These videos won't require weeks, but a day here and a day there and you can do some collaborating while you work on your BIG DESIGN projects. Just think if you could collaborate with Louis Rossmann or Linus Tech Tips. What about jumping on the right to repair bandwagon, that is hot right now. You could even offer to do some repairs on devices that people couldn't otherwise get repaired (keyboards, AMPS, plasma TV) . Fran saving the world from e-waste. Collaborating even superficially or in a one-sided manner (and possibly going on tour) will get your channel cross pollinated with other groups, UA-cam artists, and channels and more subscribers. In my opinion, you have narrowed your focus too much and need to expand and see what gets your to 250,000 or 500,000 subscribers. Just hiding out in the Franlab doesn't seem like it is going to get you where you want to go.
Stomp a bunch of DVDs for your own archive backup purposes. I'll hold a full set for you. You can charge me for storage of your backup copies if you want.

btw, my school was closing down for good, i recorded a video of the event we had where our music teacher played something on the keyboard... to my surprise, that matched against some copyrighted content, which is technically correct as she didn't write the piece but...

Fran, I support and applaud you for all you do. You are a wonderful and unique person - in a great way with your convictions, interests and ability. I've sent you a couple of messages in the past few days and I want to support you. I'm retired and worked on McIntosh power amplifiers in my deep, long background. I have a few units that I would give you if you want them. Some need repairing, which I know you can do. You can sell them and keep the profits to help your channel - to hell with subscribing and your losing so much of what you deserve. RE: The issues of your channel overall...
I hear you about the "job situation" loud and clear. Especially given your personal history and marginalized status, this is super rough territory to traverse, and you have my utmost sympathies there.
With regards to your channel/Patreon/subscribers overall, that doesn't sound like fun. I can offer some minor critiques that may help you?
- I suspect part of your issue is that your channel content is simply too wide ranging. It's hard to know exactly what a Patreon is supporting exactly. I'd suggest your channel needs to regain focus, with less tangents. I know I have been watching a LOT less lately because not much has personally interested me since the latch project.
- Consider multiple channels for tangents/diversification. A channel for kit teardowns? A channel for builds? A channel for Laserdisc uploads? A channel for rants? Some kind of separation could help keep your main channels on topic better. (See, LGR, LinusTechTips, etc), as well as limit demonetization and channel strike liability.
- When you do big projects, consider a shorter 20-25 minute summary type video, perhaps with time lapses. The multi-part videos are neat, but people may be passing them because it takes so long to watch it all. I'm a busy mom, and I find myself passing up on some of your projects despite my interest because it's just too long. The Heathkit GC-1006 project is one such build. 3.5 hours long is just WAY too much footage to watch. A 20-25 minute summary version would've been easier to digest, and may attract more views. Consider offering the longer build videos only to Patreon subscribers first, as you build it. THEN, release a condensed version to UA-cam, THEN post the longer videos as deeper content AFTER the summary video. You can still break it into multiple part summary videos if it's taking longer than a week as longer term status updates, but overall, I think some of your content is just too long for many of us to be able to enjoy, even when the subject is interesting.
- I do think that you make negative comments, bring up the lab/UA-cam issues, etc more than you realize. It's not that you're wrong, but by intermixing the content into the main channel here as you have, especially with 25 minute long videos like this, it does not instill confidence in viewers. It's all perception. You may be right the vast majority of the time, but people are perceiving it as negativity and constant. Hence, why I suggested creating a separate channel for content like that so that it is separated out of the main subscriber stream. You should be able to rant! Some of us enjoy your rants! However, perception is king on UA-cam, for better or for worse.
- Speaking of perception, I don't know what it is exactly, and I can't pin my finger on it, but something about your videos seems to create a perception that you have a lot of unnecessary stuff/hoarded stuff/excessive space. I personally understand what's going on, and I know how much space using equipment and keeping supplies takes. For what you're trying to do, I don't think it's excessive at all. Consider though that much of your audience has MUCH less space to work in on average. For example, I barely have a dining room table available, with one small rolling rack in the house, a small desk for my old computers (IBM 5160, Gateway Profile 1.5, etc), and one tiny shelf in a tiny shed. On average, most people barely have a partial garage or single basement room to use and one workbench. So, I think that one of the problems of splitting your space is that by nature, you have to refer to having another space now that it's split, but that also can sound over the top when casually mentioned, through no fault of your own. Referring to multiple desk spaces sounds outright luxurious. I don't know how to rectify it, but again, it's a perception thing. Consider ways to alter your discussions of your other desks/workspaces/lab.

I'd say revisit the kit idea, especially with covid going on.
I've personally bought a lot of $50-350 kits in the last couple of months. Of course these are kind of advanced kits. The $50 kits are eurorack synthesizer modules that would sell for $2-300 if factory made. The $350 kit is a 500 series module that replicates an API equalizer from the Huntington, Long Island era of the company. Their nearest current model is $650.
Not sure what a Fran Lab kit would be? But I think for avid tinkerers $50 for a kit isn't a hard sell. Also, you can certainly boost your margins by sourcing from Tayda Electronics in Thailand.
As far as intellectual property, I recently had a live stream on youtube taken down mid stream for copyright violation. Thing is, all of the video footage was 100% shot by me. And the audio was a live improvisation by me. No samples, just drum machines and synthesizers as god intended.

A: It cannot. UA-cam uses a filtering algorithm to compare uploads to known copyrighted content and a “hit” triggers an automated response. If the content makes it online, individuals can still flag content as their copyrighted content whether or not it truly is.
Fran, I'm just now seeing this video. I've been subscribed for a good while. I however didn't know to ring the bell, at that time. That is something I've corrected. Now, I will be seeing more of your awesome videos.
I do have one suggestion that may work for you. I think it has worked well for Adam Booth (Abom79 here on UA-cam) as well as others. That is, get with one of the t-shirt printing houses, like Tee Spring. I can't remember off hand what company Abom79 uses.
Another option, see if you can collaborate with some of the other UA-cam creators. That may give a major boost to your channel and theirs.

And at the same time, I see blatant copyright theft all over UA-cam (of current content, still being broadcast or sold on physical media) with channel ident logos blurred and so on, yet somehow the videos stay up, there's no easy way of informing the rights holders that this is happening, because often the production companies intentionally don't publish contact details.

In principle, the potential of making money from this comes up when demand is seen to exist. It would make sense to, instead of just blocking the content, per default first switch the content to monetized on the open video streaming platform (here: UA-cam) and collect the earnings for the detected rights holder to pick up. This party could then also react by calling for an individual deal with the uploader. A number of standard templates could be offered by the platform simplify the process. This would lead to a win-win situation more often than not, probably.

Now if you give me some and I decode the genome of that strain guess what? I now own that genome sequence and can legally stop you from reproducing or altering that genome in any way. That is how big companies own seed stock. Simply decoding a genome gives them rights.
If they decode your genome or any part of it they can now prevent you from altering it without their direct consent.
They are not obligated to give that consent.

I mostly use Camtasia Studio to edit and prepare my software development videos, and it has a bunch of copyright free / royalty free music included with it. But when I use more than 10-20 seconds of that music for my UA-cam videos, they are pinged with a Copyright Claim. It's crazy ! Copyright Claims are way out-of-control on UA-cam. Luckily (??), my channel is way too small to ever get monetized. :) Hang in there Fran, you're doing a great job ! :)

I always thought that information stored in a library was "Public Domain", makes you wonder if those who are copyrighting all the stuff on those laser discs actually intended it to be viewed by the public or not, if not, they shouldn't have bothered making those laser discs in the first place, I think it's getting to the point where copyright laws are being abused for ulterior motives.
