Never seen this show but love the way the hosts let Paul talk with just gentle guidance and without interruption. Good work.
hello to all, the way to talk about Paul, he speaks calmly, what he says is very interesting, me, I like to watch him as much as listen to him speak, he soothes me as much as he charms me, he is charming and very intelligent, and full of common sense, Paul is a legend, an invaluable treasure but he remains very affordable, very humble, he is unique, he does not take himself for a star even if for me he is the greatest and the best in what he does is a reference, I love his work and I love the person he is, he is authentic and at the same time very modern, I have always loved him 18 years old until today, and I will always love him, he is a fantastic guy.
@@isabellesakouali2399 I totally share your opinion and your analysis. Paul SIMON is a "belle" person in his heart and in his head. I love him too for all he is and all he did and do still
“Evidently there’s an expression on my face that looks like something’s wrong.” Gotta love Paul Simon!
Congrats to the interviewer letting the guest speak. You don't see that very often nowadays.
Thank you Mr. Skavlan for letting Mr. Simon gather his thoughts and speak. We're all better for it.
Paul Simon is so articulate and smart. Fantastic songwriter. He's made timeless art. I'm so glad they let him speak without interruption.
And finally some insight to his own person. Good to hear him say his toughts about anything.
Tell the people there's absolutely nothing wrong neither with nor with your songs or performances... that you are beyond any faults... a perfect artist in all his hits... surrounded by virtuosos from American ones to Africans... You won all the hearts man...!
Smart man with a sneaky humor. Love him. Genius.
Kudos to a Poet & One Man Band... "All art is a gift of the Holy Spirit. When this light shines through the mind of a musician, it manifests itself in beautiful harmonies. Again, shining through the mind of a poet, it is seen in fine poetry and poetic prose." ~ Baha'i Faith
This is amazing to hear him talk uninterrupted.
And so as we already knew, Paul is another very insightful, caring and by the way, brilliant musician (poet and philosopher) of our time! How very much Paul and so many musicians have influenced us and been able to express our sentiments!
Another poet and philosopher musician is John Lennon.💖💕
I love how Paul takes this huge time to answer a question
And so worth hearing. Brilliant.
He thinks - that’s part of where his genius arrives.
The PAUSE of wisdom... that's how I perceive it.
What a brilliant man.
“Going to the candidates debate -laugh about it, shout about it but when you got to choose, every way you look at it you lose.”
I find Simon brilliant in his argumentation. Very eloquent. And yes, congratulations to the host for letting the guest speak at his own pace.
It's so amazing to see and hear Paul Simon. I'd never heard him speak before--always his music was there in life. So, this in-depth interview is revealing and comforting--by that I mean that as one of that generation, these beliefs that were so very vital to our day-to-day lives are still so needed today (comfort from its commonality)-and yet, quite extraordinary that the things Paul Simon speaks about here have been more difficult to find in our political realm as well as daily life. He seems to be a lovely man.
He just has this captivating stillness about him. I could literally listen to him speak all day.
He seems very honest. I hope he's not fake and actually a good man. Besides that, he really is a very very talented musician
I belive most people are part fake, part genuine. (At least I am.)
The musicians from that era are humanists. I’m proud to have grown up during that era.
This was great. Thank you for letting Paul speak without interruption.
American anchors can take some guidance from Skavlan. Such a nice guy. Doesn't interrupt unnecessarily, unllike that CBS interview of Art Garfunkel. Kudos !
Yes I agree. Most American host interviewers are rude and loud and constantly interrupt the guests. David Letterman comes right to mind.
Thank you for shaping our generation Mr Simon.
I’ve seen that dynamic - an introspective and quiet artist who at the same time knows that his art is worth defending will come across as arrogant to some
Prince comes to mind as well.
This is a very interesting talk with our Paul Simon. Thanks for posting.
Bridge Over Troubled Water was our wedding song 48 years ago. Consciously and unconsciously, Patty and I have lived that song all these years.
That was a very good point he made about not listening to the thoughts and ideas of artists once they are in power, really good point.
We hear from Hollywood actresses and actors all the time about their political opinions. I don't know how much the politicians listen. Entertainers may not understand the practical implications of their ideas.
The politicians have always used celebrities for their endorsements and more importantly, their MONEY, to finance their campaigns and increase the vote count from their fans, whether or not the fans knew what they were voting for. If their idol endorsed a particular candidate, then the naive among them voted for whomever the celebrity said to vote for. What a lot of people don't realize is that a lot of those celebrities didn't vote themselves.
There will never be talented people as Paul Simon ever again
Paul Simon's music, up until Graceland, always seemed to capture the zeitgeist of being from NYC to me.
It seems Paul Simon is a vision as Ryan and his music is preparing the world for return of the Savior of the world. 💛🧡❤💜💚💙
2020
Such a brilliant man. Better than a theologian or a philosopher.
Love Paul’s music.(doesn’t almost everyone).I haven’t seen many interviews by him..But he comes off like someone who it would be hard to be friends with..not even sure why
Cheddar Cheese He’s not the small talk type. I would guess he likes real conversation about issues he cares about, and that he doesn’t easily make friends - probably expects and gives attention and time to developing relationships. Typical introspective, introverted artist
This man is a legend.
Simon never looks the same 2x - his face changes constantly. Super talented and very smart I enjoy listening to him.
Love this: "you wanna make an important decision in a calm state, not a state of anger, even though you may absolutely justified in your anger"
It's so so sad when great people have to grow old, 😢 Wonderful man,
"The politicians use the artists, but after the politicians get into office, do they seek the wisdom of the artists? No they don't" - Paul has always been about art transcending politics. Graceland transcended politics. Graceland showed the world that South Africa was worth caring about. Art is what makes things worth caring about.
Art could be music or Art could be Garfunkel.
He is a visionary 💙💚💜❤🧡💛
Paul articulates so clearly the dissension that is infused into politics, and politicians put on the people. But the politicians didn't create it, they themselves are being moved around like everyone. The anger is a byproduct, but of itself has never helped solve the problems.
Boy, Paul really is a thinker. He just nailed the way I feel about some things. When he said his music was different than The Beatles because he was more introspective, I thought, "Yes you are, but John was very introspective too." Then he said, "Well John was introspective". Then while continuing to listen I thought, "He and George have a lot of similarities". Then he said he/they were probably most like George. The only thing I didn't agree with is that they had different kinds of fans because there was a lot of screaming, etc. with the Beatles. I don't know if that's true because I am a HUGE fan of theirs and The Beatles. Paul is really funny. The only bummer for me was hearing that he went to the Democratic Convention. He was helping Bernie, who is a socialist and said Trump encourages anger. I wish I didn't hear that because in my heavily Democratic state, we are Trump supporters. I'll try to ignore that because I love both Paul and Art.
I think it would be uncomfortable for ANY celebrity to sit amongst 4 reporters, all staring at you.
Paul's music has enriched and shaped my life since I was 12, that's way back in '66, His music, whilst topical & deep shouldn't ever be used to interpret or align with political trends. Doing so is likely to be divisive, rather than uniting. As someone who isn't captivated by the liberal Main Stream Media, but have learned to listen to many views, I've never found your President Trump to be an angry man. MSM projects him so. Most people I know, both here at home (Australia) and abroad tend to be of the same mind.
I'll still always love Paul & Art and will always be so thankful for their music and happy to have been bought up in that era. I fear for this and future generations, they seem to be growing up with such horrid head banging, angry, mind numbing, noise (I can't call it music).
Love you Paul !!!
i love u paul....
"We need bridges so that the country can unite"
Its great to talk about the bridges, but not when you only expect people that disagree with you to make all the changes.
All of the old musicians that I adored ,turned out to be hypocrites ,as I grew wiser.
Maybe he could have donated one of the bridges from one of his guitars???...
Damn deep thinking! Love the guy. "while the anger is quite often justifiable, it is a very poor way of making a decision"
People always used to ask me “what’s wrong” when I was a child and a young person. But I never knew what they meant, I’d say, ‘nothing’. I don’t know what they saw but some one once said I always look sad. I can identify with Paul in this. I just wish I had his musical talent too.
Paul Simon a man searching for the reason to life from within his limitations. Tending to sadness because of his limitations and failure.
They make shows where they let the guest talk???? what country is it, I'm moving!
You were a musical genius paul..
I agree with Paul. So well said!💐
Paul, you are great if can sing with Art Garfunkel again ....
We Love you, Paul, I play guitar… he’s been inspiring
Paul is so insightful
Being idealistic is not always realistic under the circumstances. Though I'm idealistic...
Such a deep thinker. Isn't Wisdom wonderful.
Paul Simon makes a great point about politicians using artists to brand themselves and that’s it. The artist has no significant place in America’s cultural discussions because America doesn’t value the arts.
he looks adorable lol
Sadness? That's just awareness, and awareness is sad.
You are a treasure to your country
Great perspective. Paul is wise and good basically. People forget easily that despite our troubles, dishonesty, and greed we were still basically a well intentioned and United country before the internet. Granted the prisons and criminalizing of marijuana and abandonment of blacks etc in the cities education wise etc was and is a big stain. But with the internet and Citizens United came a Never ending torrent of political manipulation and hate. Before this America was a fairly happy place. Paul is right. People including politicians should listen.
3:17 That woman is gorgeous
Yes she is. Who is she?
The way she looks at him … whoa
He does have a resting sad face. I've thought of that everytime I watch the concert in Central Park. I wanted to ask him "what's wrong?" as well :P
musical genius only equaled by Lennon/McCartney
Yes! Someone finally said it! THe 2 Paul's, 1 John and Bob.
And Bowie
and The Boss
I love this man. x
A musician of musicians...
Och aye the noo
What a superb interview. Ask the questions and then listen to the answers. Kind of a lost art these days, sadly.
Maybe the interviewers are actually intrigued, for a change. About time..
He is a Marvel Comics fan,I think.
So? Is it only ok to be angry if you believe what Payl Simon believes?
I see more anger and divisiveness in Biden than I seen with Trump. 😮
Paul, any politician that asked for "the wisdom of the artists" once in office would be certifiable. Y'all are artists. You're not experts in economics, public health, law enforcement, or anything else necessary for running the government. It would be as silly to seek your wisdom as it would be for you to ask your endocrinologist to run the sound board in the studio.
Paul Simon is among the greatest songwriters of the twentieth century. He is also the most humorless Jew I’ve ever encountered. Well, along with Bernie Sanders.
What does Paul Simon have on his left wrist? 🤔
"There's an expression on my face that looks like something's wrong", yeah maybe the plastic surgery results?
Well yeah Paul, you're a musician so you play songs.
Well said.
who is that babe in the red dress? just wow!
Mercedes Mason
Separated at birth Woody Allen and Paul Simon
Paul is right about there being way too much anger in the United States but why is he saying Trump is so angry?
I agree. President Trump isn't angry and he doesn't make the 63 million Americans who voted for him angry. The ones who have stayed in a perpetual state of anger are liberals who have never gotten over him being elected.
He's right that Trump stokes that anger but that's because the system is rigged and it was the only way he could succeed.
Paul Simon admitted that Bernie Saunders was shafted by the democrats and nothing has changed. RFK junior should be the democratic candidate but he represents the people and not the status quo so he's having to run as an independent. Paul Simon should have refused to attend the democratic party event.
Totally agree with Paul regarding anger. You only need to read comments...filled with venom and anger! And yes...Trump both uses and feeds that!
It's true for both sides. Hillary Clinton called half the country a "basket of deplorable," to take one example, and a lot of people agreed with her. It's not nice if you're lumped into a "basket of deplorables."
Pagan Hare. Sorry but you are wrong... The Democratic party pushes the same. They encourage violence, hate, and division. The media is almost all liberal. To be honest, both parties are horrible. That's why I don't choose a side, and my eyes are always open.
Probably would do everyone good to abstain from the news channels. They really are horrible. Trump is right about that, and he is not the first one to say it.
No, Trump is pushing back against the anger that is the Left... They OWN the rage.
the MSM constantly lies, the left made up the lie that Trump colluded with Russia, it was proven after a 2.5-year trial and the Muller investigation, that it never happened.. All because they hated Trump... See how this works... What you saw in Trump was "pushing back " against this garbage of the left.
@@kristophstjames4143 You must only watch Fox. You clearly didn’t read the Mueller report and need to read a book called “Crime in Progress”
Where the fuck is the whole interview with Paul Simon...why should I subscribe and NOT get the whole show???
Hi, Thomas! You can view the first part here: ua-cam.com/video/aG1PK_rLw8M/v-deo.html - and the whole show here: ua-cam.com/video/cB3UF-XAYWg/v-deo.html. Enjoy!
Paul Simon's nickname should be Sum Ting Wong.
Thanks for the chuckle.
Well, Paul has a great ego, hasn't he? All true artist have but I like when they behave with some distance and cleverness.
I thought Paul Simon was smart.
Hes a clever fellow but he makes the point of not being 'angry', while failing to see in himself that hes thinking emotionally.
Trump is not someone who is pushing hate. He proves this with his own ideas.
He claims the media are the 'pushers'... well who hates Trump mire than the media?
Who does Trump ignore and call dishonest the most???
Its like hes on the same side but because of some attachment to some arbitrary idea in his mind he cant see it!
There's nothing wrong...
Man, he’s annoying. He overthinks everything. But he’s definitely one of the best poets and songwriters the world has ever known. He represents what America has to offer exceedingly well in that department.
Leo: In this interview, yes, extremely annoying. He has lengthy pauses when answering even the simplest of questions.
People who can’t see that this is annoying are also annoying, as are people who are annoyed when they see others being annoyed at things they don’t think they should be annoyed about.
Hope you understand.
Leo: You are so easily annoyed that you actually take the time to write others who are annoyed. 😂
Leo: I think you need to read ALL of my first statement again and get a life. The majority of my initial comment was complementing him. But people like you don’t notice stuff like that. You jump on things that aren’t important. 🙄
Leo: Oh you “red” enough, huh? 🤔😂
Poco Pico,
yes I get the same thing from people that listen to me speak, especially close friends.
That I am too intense, too introspective, and run on too long.
In the past day or so, or maybe it's been the past weeks, the famous David Crosby was asked to choose who he thinks are the greatest lyricists in music.
Ironically he waffles, because he can't decide that he says between Paul Simon, Paul McCartney, and Bob Dylan, that he seems to indicate all three as being the greatest but his definitive answer finally arrives on Joni Mitchell.
I've been studying this for possibly over twenty years, because if you didn't notice the first three that David Crosby mentions are all naturally born left-handers. This is not a coincidence. And I've been watching many videos and interviews of Joni Mitchell over the years to determine if she was possibly initially a naturally born left-hander. She speaks briefly in one interview about her left hand use at the fret board of the guitar while playing right handed. As many will know her history, she had polio at age nine, and I thought I read somewhere that she lost some partial ability of the left side of her body for a short while until she recuperated from the polio. So I wonder if she too might have been initially a naturally born left-hander, which it's known that left-handed people have a larger right brain capacity since before birth, which I describe below how I discovered this while teaching in a university a few years ago.
I was hired as an adjunct professor of astronomy some years ago and they put us as new faculty through a special course about the human brain, which is where I had to ask the woman that was teaching the course as a nurse, to a husband that was a brain surgeon.
This is where she described to me the cause of left-handedness and how it starts before birth.
I'll try not to ramble too much here as a left-hander because I tend to do that, we have long introspective and detailed answers to questions and in lectures when I had to give them I had to keep watching the clock to give the students a break or they would fall asleep as we were instructed by this lady teacher providing this new class for the new faculty about the human brain, she advised do not lecture longer than 10 minutes because the students will fall asleep.
Every 10 minutes you have to stop, ask them to stand up and move around for a minute or two and then he seated again.
And then in your pamphlet you're reading this week about the human brain I want you to write over wherever it says 'teacher', cross it out, and write the word 'entertainer'. is a teacher you will now learn how to entertain students.
Anyway I won't go on too long here tonight because I've written this many times to my over thousand friends in Facebook about left-handedness. There's a special left-handed site in Facebook that thousands of left-handers around the world contribute to. Then it includes some as medical doctors which anyone can access and read. but the New England Journal of Medicine and the British Lancet are much more in-depth as critical Medical journals and scientific medical reports.
There's many medical journals and scientific and medical documentation about left-handed people, and that it was for maybe the past 30 years termed as the Doctor Norman Geshwind Theory.
It's believed to be something to do with high testosterone presence [in some mother's amniotic fluid] at precisely 6 weeks after conception; as the high testosterone presence suppresses the left lateral hemisphere of the brain, the right lateral hemisphere is allowed to grow larger or become more active and then it also grows more critical wiring through the corpus callosum over to the left brain hemisphere.
So it is found later in MRIs and x-rays that left handers also have a larger corpus callosum.
This condition is what results at about 8 months before birth as causing the preference of left-handedness. But there are many controversies in medical and scientific analysis about this that can vary.
Much of the general public on first hearing it think it's bizarre or a conspiracy theory, or just an opinion, because they misunderstand that a person that predominantly writes with one hand or the other simply chooses to do this in early childhood. They do not. It's determined before birth and all of these naturally born left-handed people regardless if they play guitar left-handed such as Paul McCartney and Jimi Hendrix did, of the three aforementioned in the beginning of my statement above, only Paul McCartney, plays guitar left-handed, [although Bob Dylan and Paul Simon are also left handers but they play right-handed guitar.]
So many naturally left-handed people in writing or favoring the left hand will actually play right-handed guitar, such as I do.
Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, David Bowie, David Byrne, Bob Geldof, Mark Knopfler, Robert Fripp, both Everly Brothers, and I can't remember so many others right now, are all naturally born left handers but they play right handed guitar.
The few of the well-known as you probably also know Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, Dick Dale, Kurt Cobain, and a few others play left-handed guitar, yet I cannot remember all just now at this moment.
Other famous musicians such as the Glenn Gould the child prodigy classical piano player from Toronto Ontario Canada is an example as is David Byrne of the talking heads as left handers are also known to run a high incidence of Asperger's autism dyslexia and bipolar. The famous jazz pianist Bill Evans and Oscar Peterson brilliant geniuses on the piano are left-handers.
In many of the geniuses known on the keyboards throughout musical history are known to be mostly left-handed such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Rachmaninoff, all left-handed and there are probably many more left-handed geniuses on the piano if you start researching.
But initially behind all this many left-handed artists are also known to run rather intensive creative abilities, and known higher IQs.
I love Paul Simon and his brilliant body of work, but his plastic surgeon should be fired.
It's called aging
Yeah, pretty much. He and Garfunkel were touring the country when I was in grade school, and I'm 59 y.o. now...@@jonock1
How to hide behind your whining by Paul Simon
