I usually bring a pocketful of half inch flat washers for the ticket machine. The tram line from Malaga is a brilliant asset in that region of Spain.

You can also reuse your paper ticket for another journey. A common issue at the ticket machine is unable to issue new ticket and it will ask you if you want to reuse your ticket for another journey
