I like consultations with chefs and friends, but this had none of the chaos of what makes the show. Cool guest, obviously skilled, but bad for the format to just have someone else do all the cooking.

Genius way to neutralize most of Uncle Roger's power by making him a fried rice he's never had before. Fantastic ep and super interesting since I barely know anything about African cuisine. This was a delight.

I'm not sure Stephen and Kiano were prepared for Uncle Roger's savage sense of humor. They had to bring out Nigel at the end so they could readjust.Overall this was a lot of fun. This is my first time watching Stephen and Kiano. They were both enjoyable to watch and obviously Uncle Roger is always a treat. Also Kiano is so gorgeous.
Nigel had to apologize for how savage Uncle Roger could get. When Uncle Roger puts things under the satirical microscope, he pulls no punches.

as a Malaysian, yup almost everyday my butt spicy sometimes we hardly sit🤣
He talked about shit two different ways. That's professional grade.

As a chef of 30 years and a fellow steven.....when that pretty lady said "STEVEN!!!" when he over boiled that pan my life flashed before my eyes a few times lol ....lets just say it felt like deja vu
I loved the style of the first three episodes - seeing Steven cooking and learning so much in just 24 hours. Then serving on the balcony had such a nice vibe and great lighting - it was like an outdoor restaurant :)
Steven's been so traumatised by Ronnie Cheing he just sous chefed this entire season. It's sad, cause it was fun watching Steven cook.
It TOTALLY DOES feel like that!! Ronny Chieng just scarred him 😭😭. I miss bold, head chef Steven….
I also feel like that guest deliberately selected something he knew Steven couldn't do--like he even said you'd need to take more time (beyond what he knew the time limit was) to even be close to successful. That just feels disingenuous.

i feel like this whole thing where challenges have *barely accomplishable* time limits have become more stressful than entertaining. seeing people succeed is nice too.
@@animuswonder The key part of the show that made it stand out was the stress. Obviously unhealthy amounts that are affecting the cast is too far. If that is the case then I think it's better not to do Dish Granted as the development, time limits and creativity as they learned made the show special. This is a different show and that's fine but perhaps they should do a different type of show. Everyone's mental health comes first and that may not be the issue that people are making it out to be but the bottom line is this season was a different show. Only they know what direction to go moving forward and I genuinely hope it isn't due to high stress because that's an awful thing to deal with.
Uncle Roger immediately serving them the meal they cooked… immediately establish dominance and good etiquette at the same time…but also this whole thing deffo felt like Uncle Roger was meeting his niece-in-law for the first time and roasting his nephew 😂

I miss Steven cooking instead of his guests. I get it, 24hrs is a tight limit, especially if you're not even a pro chef. But that's what makes the show so relatable. But of course, it's also really stressful to pull it off on your own and some of these guests have unrealistic expectations and requests. I actually wouldn't mind you expanding that time limit to a few days or even a week. I just want to see you get your own spotlight.

Absolutely! If guests ask for something that takes time to marinate etc., then more time for an amateur cook like Steven is appropriate! I love Kiano and would actually love to watch a show just with her but for this show, the energy is just not the same without Steven leading the cooking and really starring in this show. He has so much heart that I miss experiencing in these latest episodes.

@@icelogical1239 that’s more to do with UA-cam’s ridiculous algorithm and de-monetization than anything. A couple creators I follow had to resort to censoring when they’ve swore openly in the past.
i’d love to see Steven and Shane collab on a historical cooking show where they make historically accurate meals. “Tasting History with Max Miller” style but with Watcher humor!

Kiano is calm and prepared. My kind of cook. I liked her confidence in the kitchen. She can probably cook anything. Consider me a Kiano fan. The presentation was outstanding. Nice job all around.

I’m still enjoying these episodes, but for me, I preferred when it was just Steven (+ Tony and crew) vs. the clock. I feel like I was way more invested in watching him struggle to learn and succeed in 24 hours, which made the final payoff more interesting as well. For this season, especially when Steven keeps taking a backseat, it’s kinda :/
Agreed. I feel like he barely talks this episode and Kiano (no hate on her just how it seemed) is running the whole entire thing. Like there’s whole stretches of this where he’s not even in the room for his own show.
love the addition of the guest in the kitchen, but i do really miss steven coming up with the dish and presentation and actually attempting to cook it. maybe we can get a happy medium where he still participates in the planning and cooking process but gets the assistance he needs from guests so it doesn't get too stressful?

I also miss the dish being what was actually asked for, just elevated or with fun twists, not, "ok, I hear what you're asking for, but let me totally disregard it or go in the complete opposite direction."
Like, with this episode, it was supposed to be simple Chinese style fried rice, but wasn't. In the last ep, Niki emphasized how nothing compliments Indonesian fried chicken than PLAIN white rice, so they went crazy with seasonings and cheese for the rice and decided on a risotto... like, it used to be, Shane would ask for mac and cheese and he'd get mac and cheese, and now it's like, had he been on this season, a guest would've cooked him chicken alfredo or something.

When Steven came up with the ideas (with the help of Tony, a few friends and internet videos) it really felt special and he didn't just think about the food, he made it special for the guest. I was always having happy tears, laughing and re-watching the episodes. I really feel terrible about all of the criticism that Steven and the crew are seeing. I hope they know it's constructive and we love what the show was. :)
Show is lame with the guest cooks. Ruins the entire premise. This episode was terrible.
I love how he said what he likes about the dish is how simple fried rice is, as they proceed to make a whole shopping list for one recipe 😂

Seriously, it felt like the guest kept shutting down Uncle Roger's jokes.
"If he doesn't know the dish or hasn't eaten it before, Uncle Roger can't roast us" is the idea that Steven and Kiano had when they thought of the African fried rice idea.
Holy shit. Ronny Chieng legitimately bullied Steven so hard that he single handedly wiped the format of the show and turned it into some sort of guest chef...thing. And that was after he ironically pre-emptively called out the comments section for bullying Steven...when it's universally supportive of him lmao Disaster guest star.
This guest was awesome as her own entity, but what made this show magic was Steven in the kitchen by himself panicking and causing absolute chaos by trying to pull things together.
Found out in real time that Uncle Roger is just a bit and my world is shaken.

It's marvelous to see Kiano's creative inspiration of making a prawn stock and saffron combination to cook rice instead of the usual, egg to give the "golden" rice its luxurious color and unique taste.
i think its so cute how they matched colours with uncle roger, i kind of miss the tohuwabohu of the early seasons but kiano was a lovely host and the food looked amazing

Having a guest helping seems like a cool idea but Kiano was literally doing all the cooking.
She also felt kind of awkward in the interactions with uncle roger. Constantly undercutting his jokes.

Such a great idea to expose him to a non-Asian style of rice! African rice is very similar to rice in latin america (likely not a coincidence), and I think it is surprising for people who have only ever eaten Asian style rice.

THIS! The guests are amazing but seeing Steven panic while cooking is one of the best part of this series. I wish they go back to him cooking next season.
I also love to see his creativity and his problem solving. I thought the idea of Dish Granted also included Steven building up his cooking skills and learning new things in his efforts to make people a good meal. It feels to me in this season that that has gone away a bit.

completely agree with the comments about this season. i don't mind the guests but i wish it was more of a collaborative effort cooking wise. steven feels like a side piece when it's his own show! this ep especially didn't have the same vibe, again bringing guests is fine but when they're actually skilled and experienced with cooking it takes away the fun and drama out of it. i don't know the reason as to why it's changed maybe he thought it was a good idea but this is all compliments to steven because he's so fantastic, he doesn't need guests. he is the reason we watch. but if it's because it's a lot of effort and pressure on him, i hope he finds a middle ground where he still cooks but without the mental and physical stress.

personally, love the existence of this dude. uncle roger's whole bit is being judgey and ignorant old asian man (the type many of us desis and asians grew up around) and so i dont get the point of being defensive to him or trying to educate him, because hes just a character doing a bit 😭. Nigel is a totally different guy who is so sweet and respectful. i feel like the uncle roger bit is just so all of yall can have a little experience of what we grew up with in asian countries lmao. the "everything came from asia" line killed me haha because THE NUMBER OF TIMES I HAVE HEARD THIS FROM MY FAMILY GROWING UP IS INSANE!,,, but thats the things right? we all KNOW that most of what he says is all exagerrated hooey. He just does his bit very well- so why not just have fun with it :3

Yes I totally agree, I think it is also a difference in Western vs Eastern sense of humor. Americans in particular don't seem to understand irony or dry humor as well.
I totally agree. Usually when people do a collab with him they just set him up to complement his character and I am pretty sure these people should have been aware that Uncle Roger will behave for the content. So its abit iffy when Kiano says she is a 'big fan' but she got defensive and offended in the process.
I see alot of offended people who don't know that Uncle Roger is a character. A very, very exaggerated character who is offensive and rude but it's all in good fun. I like that Nigel created the character because of pandemic lock downs. He obviously couldn't do stand up and needed something to stand out on UA-cam in order to get the views. Uncle Roger became an unexpected but welcome icon.
I did think Uncle Roger was a little too harsh when it comes to cultural fried rice then I remembered, it's his persona, and Kiana said uncles all over the world actually behaved like that, makes me feel a little bit better. They do stick with their "superior" culture the most, don't they? :D
Was surprised that he liked it. Techincally they didn't even make the dish he asked for. When he says fried rice, he means traditional chinese fried rice. In essence, they did not prepare the dish he requested. It's like ordering a pizza and getting Lahmacun instead.
Must have tasted pretty good though, sure looked good.
Are you familiar with Uncle Roger? Harsh is his entire persona. They knew going into this how his character acts and exactly what was expected. She said she watched every episode of his show and was a fan meaning she (and everyone at Dish Granted) knew what they were in for. I was surprised he was quite reserved. You call it harsh, this was probably the most respectful I've seen him. It's an act and no one's feelings were actually hurt.
@@redshirt49 They wouldn't have had a chance making authentic fried rice to his liking so shifting cultures was there only option. This season did have a lot of "traditional, keep it simple" requests from quite a few guests. That seemed to make it hard to create fancy "dream" dishes for them because the show is about going way above and beyond but many people wanted very simple, just like home type dishes. It was an awkward season for sure.

I'd say the first season felt 'grander' in the sense that they had so much more creativity because the expectations of the guests were to have a dream dish created, not 'create a dish that meets the standard I have in my brain'. Season 1 was all about fulfilling 'what if's', which is why creativity was much more front and center, Season 2 was all about 'can you make the best ______'. Totally different asks!
You said it: it definitely felt a bit awkward as a season --from the setup of Stephen not being fully around to the guests' requests. i guess it's also because Season 1 set the bar so high; I must've seen the whole season at least 3 times :))
@@veryclaro It's definitely a favorite of mine too. I feel bad critiquing this season because I adore Steven, Tony and the crew. If it was getting stressful for them I'd be thrilled with even a three episode season or a "Dish Granted Special". Fingers crossed it all works out in a way that is healthy and fun for everyone. :)
The presentation ideas from Chef Eros were wonderful. He made a simple dish appear magical.

Kiano is such a favorite of mine, I was so excited to see her on the thumbnail. But I kinda miss seeing Steven do the work. Like it is nice to have guests helping or even guiding him, but doing all the cooking it's kinda... defeats the entire purpose of the show imo
I loved Kiano’s calming energy in this episode! I love seeing the guests teach Steven some new techniques while still collaborating to make amazing fusion dishes!

honestly while i do love the dish creation aspect that the new chefs lend to the series , i'd say the soul of dish granted is steven's creativity and willingnesss to make a dish thinking of his friends and the journey and struggle he overcomes in the creation is something really personal and enjoyable, this season with other is different but it's not the format i fell in love with on the pilot season
I love Kiano's calming presence and that meal looks delicious!
Uncle Roger's point of view towards fried rice is what my family held so much lol. Whenever we went to a new hotel, we always tasted the fried rice first. Because if it tastes good, then we don't need to worry about the other foods.
How come the main guy steven isnt cooking or coming up with the dish idea I loved before when he would brainstorm and combine the person's fave foods in one dish

Frankly speaking, this looks more like Dish Granted for Kiano rather than Uncle Roger - she was clearly more interested in show-casing an African-inspired dish rather than following the guest's wishes.

Kiano is STUNNING and seems like such a kind and knowledgeable person. You have to be all that to win over uncle roger!
Judging from the whole season, I don't mind if another Dish Granted season takes months or even aired next year because Steven and team definitely needs a break to relief their mental stress. Making dish that you don't know especially dishes with specific flavor and technique is not something you can do in few hours or overnight, and honestly if I were him I will fail as well haha.

I know that Dish Granted is featuring more guests to alleviate some of the stress if Steven were to cook alone but I really miss the charm of watching him fumble around and eventually figuring things out by the end. I'm okay with guests as Kiano was stunning and a delight to have in this episode as well as other guests we've already had, but I hope they don't take up too much of the screentime and just be there for guidance and assistance.
Reading the comments I agree that I miss Steven cooking. That was the heart of the show for me. I hope they go back to him cooking. I wouldn’t even mind a guest as a sous chef following stevens instruction

This episode was so great! I too miss the Steven chaos but I also do love Kiano and her calm, confident expertise. Also, Chef Eros was only in the video for a little over 2 minutes but he was so funny like giving expert gourmet decoration help while not caring how gigantic the prawn was, then just going "ok bye" taking the fried rice with him lmao. Props too to Uncle Roger for criticizing Steven for buying expensive slippers even though it was a gift for him and then not giving Steven a star for not cooking 😂(and I don't think he was being harsh about the food at all since they knew it was a bit that he'd prefer traditional Chinese egg fried rice but he still gave a 8/10 despite that)

She's not a chef! She doesn't label herself as one. So why are you giving her the chef title for? She's a home cook. Even Rachael Ray doesn't call herself a chef because she understands that it's disrespectful to those who actually received their education and work for years behind a professional chef to be granted that title.
