Thing that elevates Paul Leary to top shelf guitarist is that he can play every Buttholes song live, exactly as it sounds on the record.
And as any Buttholes devotee will attest: before the Buttholes, NO ONE had ever played the guitar like Paul Leary.

I saw Hugh Beaumont Experience at the Island in Houston way back when, maybe opening for Verbal Abuse? I was a child who ran away from a New Orleans boy’s home slumming in Texas and of course punk rock changed everything for me. Seeing BHS at the Dream Palace in NOLA later on in the 80’s when “Hardcore” had gotten generic and boring and their gig was eye opening magical… maybe 40 people in attendance. By that time I was into stuff like Exodus, Sodom & Bathory and also Birthday Party, Culturcide, Test Dept, Einstürzende et al. So glad Paul mentioned SPK, a major influence on me…

"Psychic, Powerless..." was and still stands out as Butthole Surfers' most experimental album. Better than that, it stands out as capturing that fine and subtle balance between making use of a variety of groundbreaking rock hooks and influences, some slightly mutated, that offered a solid, tuneful sound while also allowing room for experimentation to capture moods and feelings that otherwise wouldn't get expressed applying conventional methods and techniques. And that menacing and harrowing Chrome-like (i.e. Helios Creed and Damon Edge) guitar sound on tracks such as Concubine, Eye Of The Chicken and Cherub are just absolutely and lysergically mind blowing!

Paul Leary's guitar work definitely made me aware of an array of possibilities and differences in sound ... and then in the studio - his workings on the Locust album, which is largely created by him twisting, chopping, and rererecording sounds/songs and compiling them together to bring to life this horrific masterpiece ...
I have to say, with Sweeney & guitar work in mind, I was curious that there was no mention of the Hairway To Steven album, considering its demonic psych rock insanity ... great seeing these two in the same interview nonetheless. 🤠

I had my Butthole Surfers records (along with a few others) taken by my parents one day, my older brother had been warning them about the records I was listening to…I don’t think any of them actually listened to one of the songs, I gave them no time to keep them from me…and just took them all back and told them all “it’s music that I love, taking them away is idiotic.” I think that was the point they all realized I just wasn’t willing to compromise with the ridiculous, unfounded fears of others. They never mentioned it again….so, thank you Butthole Surfers!!

They give Watchtower some props!! That band is highly revered by some old school metalheads. The Butthole Surfers song “The O-Men” was inspired by another Texas based metal band called Omen after Gibby and Paul happened to watch Omen perform while tripping acid , the crazed proto industrial metal track that they created is one of the best and freaked out songs in the catalog of Butthole Surfers.

Revisionist means rewritten it's not going to be the same why would they care about being censored it's all nonsense that means nothing that's why it's great.. it's jibberish chaos that's the point.

Thanks for sharing, really enjoyed this podcast. So many ways to interpret Butthole Surfers, to me they are more than a punk band.... definitely experimental with originality...disturbingly beautiful music with vibes of seeing a therapist yet finding the humor to laugh at the trauma....at the very least their music is open to your imagination.

Playing in a band in Australia a long time ago, I remember an American record company guy was in Australia scouting for bands. He came and saw my band and asked us who our biggest influences were. The guitarist said Metallica and Slayer, the drummer said Led Zepplin. Then it was my turn and I said Butthole Surfers and he cracked up laughing and said that that was the last band he expected someone from Australia to say.

Grew up in Buffalo which was pretty fucked up in a lot of ways in the late 80's early 90's, the Surfers were an apropos soundtrack for the times and the stuff still holds up. Amazing musicians.

One more thing - can they, will they, release a remastered HD 4K version of their masterpiece "Entering Texas" AKA "BBQ Movie" ? It deserves better than existing only on decaying decades old VHS tapes and grainy lo-res UA-cam transfers!

Why did Matador delete the song, Ngr Observer, from the "Psychic, Powerless..." LP?
