There is so much truth in this idea! I learned far more about the Civil War from Historical Fiction than I ever did in a U.S. History class. Speaking of Medievals & C.S. Lewis - after learning about the medieval influence on atmosphere in his writing and then encountering the chapter “The Wood Between the Worlds” in The Magician’s Nephew, I’m forever changed and can’t help but notice the atmosphere (or lack of) in a book. That chapter stays with me to this day. Looks like you had an amazing year of Mother Academia 🙌🏼 Inspired by you, as always. 😄

I so look forward to your videos, Autumn! They're always incredibly inspiring and the ideas you offer always seem to come at the perfect timing. I love that you (and Amanda) are constantly circling back to the idea of poetic knowledge and have tried to integrate it into things like human anatomy in our homeschool this year, which has been such a delightful challenge! I've also been enjoying delving into the middle ages and have found it interesting to integrate the history of medieval food, herbs and medicine into my mother culture studies but you're definitely inspiring me to add a solid dose of historical fiction into the mix too!

Ooh, this medieval food/herbs/medicine study sound so interesting! We had several women in Common House choose things like gardening, homeopathy, etc. and I wonder how enriching it would be to follow those ideas back in time!

Hi Autumn! I don't normally comment on your videos (because I'm 18 and am not expecting to be a mother for another several years lol- I found you through searching up education methods to occupy myself during my gap year), but I wanted to say you should look into Oxford Latinitas. They teach Latin and Greek online through the immersion/active method. I'm taking classes with them to prepare for my Classics degree next year. Term time classes are only 2 hours a week per language, but we learn a lot and speak it pretty much exclusively during the lessons. They also don't make you sign up for the whole year, meaning you could start the beginner I course from the next term or during the winter intensive. And they have many time slots to accommodate the international student base- there's even an American in my Latin class!

So happy to have you here! And thank you for this tidbit. I don't think I knew about Oxford Latinitas. I would love to take a live course like this though!

    Hello,
We are enjoying a slow and Poetic entrance into Latin.
Last year, we made our nature journals in Latin. And we, also, use the Latin of the church through beautiful Latin hymns and prayers. Learning the Pater Noster was a nice accomplishment … and we continue to chant it every morning.
This year, we are collecting Latin maxims.

I've heard of Kristin Lavrandatter but now you've just sold me. I don't need extra books to have on my list but I might have to make some room. 😂😂😂

Started listening to Lavransdatter and immediately knew that I needed to actually sit and read it so I could really feel it. I have yet to do it, but now it’s on the top of the list!

Hi Autumn, I love your book collection! We're working on building ours here. We started Latin this year for my almost 9 year old using Picta Dicta and it's been really great so far. She loves it!! I'm so thankful i chose this program, as i wanted her first experience with Latin to be positive. It's very immersive and had her reading sentences from day 1. Good luck with your studies!!!😊

Yes! Kristin! So, years ago, I didn't know translations were a thing either and I suffered through what I call the "KJV translation" (ha! I don't remember the translator) until my bookish friends enlightened me. Tiina Nunnally is a fantastic translator if anyone is wondering.

Anyone else want to go book shopping with Autumn? Where do you find your books?

    • @thecommonplacehomeschool
      @thecommonplacehomeschool  2 дні тому +4

I would love to be taken book shopping on others' behalf! My dream job is being a book bartender in my own book shop. Like, come tell me what's going on in your life and I'll hand you the right book.
I buy most of my books secondhand now. I love library/school sales, thrift stores, charity book shops, etc. When I want a particular copy/editions, I'll use Abe, Thrift, and Google to search for used books online.
I just reorganised the books after getting some new shelves so I'm filming a "book tour" to release in the next few weeks! That should be fun for the book lovers!

As cringe as this may be, I've been using RPG games like Skyrim and Fallout for language immersion throughout the year, and I think it catalyzes the learning journey by a lot

Further into the video, and I love the idea of reading biographies and historical fiction before getting into a specific period to get the overall vibe and lived experience of that era

Tiina Nunnally is the translator for the Penguin classics. Charles Archer is the translator for the older ones. I do want to say though that the footnotes are slightly different with the 2 translations....and it's super fun to read both if you have both:D.
I'm so happy that you're reading Krisitin Lavransdatter! It was the first thing that popped into my head when you mentioned "medieval fiction", and it is SO epic that I think it is something I would like to reread in the future...maybe at a different life stage since it encompasses a woman's whole life.
