- এটি একটি যুবকের গল্প যে বাংলা ভাষা নিয়ে তার পুরো একাডেমিক কেরিয়ার তৈরি করেছে এবং সেই বিষয়ে পিএইচডি করেছে। একটি ছোট বাচ্চাকে বাংলা পড়ায় যুবকটি। সৌভাগ্যক্রমে বাচ্চাটির স্কুল-শিক্ষাক্রমের বাংলা ভাষাটি এখনো রয়ে গেছে। তাই তার রোজগারের এই সামান্য ব্যবস্থাটুকু এখনো আছে। ছাত্রের নাম “পিকলু”।
যুবকটি একদিন হঠাৎ অনুভব করে যে গোষ্ঠীগতভাবে "বাঙালি" তার সাংস্কৃতিক মূল্যবোধ ও পরিচয় হারাতে শুরু করেছে। বাঙালি এমনিতেই ইংরেজ ঔপনিবেশিক হ্যাংওভার থেকে এখনো বেরোতে পারেনি, তার উপরে আবার আজ হিন্দির প্রতি আনুগত্য যা বর্তমান কেন্দ্রীয় সরকারের জাতীয়তাবাদের আড়ালে ক্ষমতার কেন্দ্রিকরণের লক্ষ্যকে সাফল্যের পথে এগিয়ে নিয়ে যাচ্ছে। সে বুঝতে পারে যে তার শিক্ষাগত যোগ্যতা আগামী বছরগুলিতে অপ্রয়োজনীয় হিসেবে বিবেচিত হবে। যোগ্যতার নিরিখে কোনও চাকুরীর সম্ভাবনা আর থাকছে না বললেই চলে। তার গ্রাসাচ্ছদনের একমাত্র উপায় প্রাইভেট টিউশন।
আর্থিক ও সাংস্কৃতিকভাবে যুবকটি আজ বিপর্যস্ত। বাঁচার সান্ত্বনা পাওয়ার জন্য তার কাছে একমাত্র উপায় পড়ে থাকে আধ্যাত্মিক অনুশীলন। একজন গুরুজি ধরনের ধর্মীয় প্রচারকের সংস্পর্শে আসে সে। পূর্বজন্ম ও পরজন্ম নিয়ে গুরুজির জ্ঞান ও বিশ্লেষণে তাঁর প্রতি আকৃষ্ট হয় যুবকটি। মানুষের পূর্বজন্ম সম্পর্কে জানবার জন্য ধ্যান করার পরামর্শ দেন তিনি।
মাতৃভাষার প্রতি ঔদাসীন্য এবং বাঙালির সাংস্কৃতিক বিপর্যয়ের কারণগুলির অনুসন্ধানের জন্য যুবক তার ছাত্র পিকলুর পূর্বজন্ম নিয়ে দীর্ঘ ধ্যান শুরু করে। শেষে তার এই ধ্যানের ফলশ্রুতি হিসেবে বিখ্যাত বাঙালি, বাংলার আইকন এবং বাংলা ভাষার পুনর্জাগরণকারী শ্রী ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র বিদ্যাসাগর মহাশয় তাঁর সামনে উপস্থিত হন।
সিনেমার ভাষা এবং ছবিটির বিষয়বস্তু রাজনৈতিক বিদ্রূপ এবং প্রসঙ্গটি বাস্তবতার উর্ধে গিয়ে দেখা যেতে পারে। এই ছবিটি শিক্ষিত বাঙালির ভণ্ডামি, ধর্মভীরুতা, গোঁড়ামি, অমূলক অহঙ্কার ও পণ্ডিতিপনাকে চোখে আঙ্গুল দিয়ে দেখায়। নিজের সামাজিক ও অর্থনৈতিক উত্থানের জন্য এই বাঙালি যে নিজের ভাষা ও সংস্কৃতির সঙ্গে বিশ্বাসঘাতকতা করতে পারে তা আরেকবার মনে করিয়ে দেয়।
সতর্ক বার্তা: অতীতের গৌরবে মগ্ন থেকে দিবাস্বপ্নে বেঁচে থাকা অনুশোচনার দিন নিয়ে আসে।
This film, narrates the story of a young man, who have formed his entire academic career in Bengali Language and have gained PhD in that subject. Suddenly he finds that the entire “Bengali” community as an ethnic group has suffered a loss of cultural values-identity as they have surrendered to the state aided language hegemony, firstly English as a colonial hangover and then Hindi, resulting from the superficial Nation-building objective of the Union Government. He understands that his educational achievements will be obsolete in the coming years, as the language, his subject of education will be into oblivion which means he cannot earn any job with his qualifications. Struggling with his financial burdens, he desperately wants to save his only means to livelihood which is giving private tuition to a young kid, who still has unfortunately the subject in his school curriculum. Financially, culturally defeated this young man, in order to retard his national, cultural and even religious identity loss, tries to find solace in spiritual practices. He comes in contact with a pseudo-religious preacher, who trains him to meditate and find out about past lives. In order to find answer to the causes of language loss and eventually cultural identity loss, he starts meditating by focusing on his student Piklu’s past life. In the end, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, a famous Bengali Linguist, Bengali icon and revivalist of the language appears in front of him.
The cinematic language and the content of the film is political satire and the context is seen as a hyperbole. The film exposes the vanity, hypocrisy, pedantry, idolatry, bigotry, sentimentality of Bengalis as an ethnic community who are perfunctory with their mother tongue and are always tempted to rise the social ladder by embracing the language of the power for the purpose of fulfilling communicative needs.
Caution: Daydreaming in past glory brings a day of repenting.
