    Literally found this channel today at 4:30AM (I’m in Chicago) and immediately recognized the quality of its creator and contents and subscribed immediately.
    Also happy to say that I’ve been using SPF 100 since I was 18, and just sunscreen in general since I was a child. Sunscreen has been my only moisturizer during times I was short on funds in my 20s. I’m 30 now and am in a better place financially, so there are more steps/products in my skincare routine, but I’ll never forsake SPF 100. I credit that and my mom’s genes for my youthful-looking skin. ✨

    Loved this video! 😃 I remember Lisa Eldridge once said that, according to a dermatoligist she had spoken to, for everyday use higher spf wasn't necessarily better (meaning higher than 30) because of the large increase in active ingredients needed to get that extra 1% protection (following the 98% vs 99% argument you debunked just now) and that over time you might develop oversensitivity to the active organic ingredients. Thus limiting your choice of spf you can tolerate and all the hassle that follows with this. What is your take on this argument? Was the derms knowledge on the area already outdated when Lisa spoke of this? (Sorry for the bad english)

    • @ofthebeanvariety
      @ofthebeanvariety 6 років тому +9

      In general, I think the derm was coming from a view point of the more things that are applied to skin, that's more that skin has to deal with and can develop a potential allergy. Derms are trying to promote the path of less harm and generally deal with people who have compromised skins. If you apply an aggressive active, that can definitely leave your skin more open to sensitivity and irritation. I definitely have that sort of skin, but if I can find a sunscreen that has higher protection that my skin likes, then that is the option I will pick. ❤️

    • @LabMuffinBeautyScience
      @LabMuffinBeautyScience  6 років тому +14

      That's a good question! I want to do a full video or post on this, but the short answer is:
      * Higher SPF doesn't necessarily mean more actives - it could be a more effectively formed film, it could be non-active ingredients forcing the light to take a longer path through the sunscreen film (this is easier to explain with an animation haha)
      * Not all organic ingredients are likely to cause sensitivities - for example Tinosorb M is particulate so it doesn't enter the skin, and in general the newer organic sunscreen ingredients are large enough to not absorb into skin - although in the US these aren't normally an option
      And as PamMilly mentioned, derms tend to see people with sensitive skin so the recommendations might not be as good for people with less reactive skin :)

    I read an article saying that higher spf tends to have a lower protection against UVA because they have to increase the protection against UVB, so UVA rays would be less protected. So I am quite confused is it really better to get higher SPF products? I am more concerned about UVA due to aging issue.

    I found that sunscreens with higher content of active ingredients and a thicker consistency keep my skin from burning. Have you found this to be the case? My skin prefers powder formulas and slightly thicker consistencies. Some milky formulas, while having high concentrations of active ingredients (i.e. 20% +), I will still burn. Such an informative video, thank you!! :-)

    I’m not sure I agree with her though. She literally mentioned that SPF doesn’t represent the effectiveness of a sunscreen. It only stands for the time that the sunscreen would protect you. So all that matters is whether you re-apply your sunscreen deliberately throughout the day. Based on her spf 50 and 100 example, if I reapply my spf 50 sunscreen before it stops working, I should get the same protection as the spf 100 one. The only thing is that people always forget to reapply thinking that their sunscreen is going to last a whole day.

    hi michelle!
    I have a question regarding sunscreen and how long it protects our skin.
    someone told me the other day, that no matter how many times you reapply a sunscreen, that eventually it can't anymore?
    like an spf 30 *can* protect you 30 times longer than your own skin can. let's say this would be 6 hours (just an example).
    this person said that you can't protect your skin from the sun for longer than these six hours, even if you reapply, that eventually it reaches... I don't know, a limit?
    I didn't really understand and was confused and didn't really think that's true. but I'm insecure now and would like to know what you have to say about this?
    thank you so much!

    • @LabMuffinBeautyScience

    This was very informative but there is a question which I can't seem to find an answer to.. why choose a lower SPF than 30?
    When I went on holiday with my parents as a child they cycled through their sunscreen, starting with 30 then working their way down to 10 by the end of the holiday as they built up their tan.
    If the SPF rating just relates to the length of time it protects you, then is it just a case of use 10 if you can be bothered to apply it regularly or choose 30/50 if you want to apply it less frequently..?

    Do physical sunscreens absorb at all, or only sit on the skin? I put a jacket on in the car to protect my arms from the sun (non tinted windows). But it feels like I'm just rubbing the sunscreen off. The same when I lean on something, or for example rub my skin.
    Note: I often use a chemical first, wait 8 minutes, then apply a physical. But I want to make sure I'm not accidentally sabotaging my sun protection.

    • @LabMuffinBeautyScience
      @LabMuffinBeautyScience  3 роки тому +1

      It's not allowed in Australia either - from my understanding, the reasoning is that high SPFs aren't reliably measured and the SPF label is based off a single experiment, so it could be misleading to consumers e.g. a sunscreen that tests at SPF 75 ± 15 might get a label rating of SPF 90 while a sunscreen that tests at SPF 100 ± 20 might get a label rating of SPF 80, so "SPF 50+" would prevent this from happening. I'm not sure if this policy will change based on the latest updated ISO procedure that's meant to increase reliability, or maybe when a more reliable in vitro or hybrid test rolls out...

    Do different formulations of chemical sunscreens effect the spf rating & efficacy of the sunscreen? I have seen chemical sunscreens with very low percentages of filter concentrations labeled as spf 50+... Additionally, I have seen two chemical sunscreens (one with spf 50 and one with spf 30) that have identical filters & percentage concentrations. Are sunscreen manufacturers allowed to lie about the SPF in their products? I feel like some are being dishonest...
