  • Bob Pellerin (CTOBOB) braves the extreme cold to give you highlights of how well Toyota's BZ4X runs in -30c.
    Is the range greatly reduced? Yes. Are you nice and warm in the SUV? Yes. Bob highlights some of the settings and the heat sources found on the 100% electric SUV. Does he regret the purchase? No.

    I noticed the video edit, good job, it was a bit strange at first but then I got it! Good idea, every second was informative! No second was wasted in this video.

    At -30°C (-22°F), seeing 34.5 kWh/100km (1.8 mi/kWh) is quite reasonable. That's what I would expect from most BEV of that size/class. Thanks for sharing.

      @TonyWilliams123 Рік тому

      John, that’s actually not very good. The comparable sized Tesla Model Y car gets much better energy consumption in both hot and cold weather. For example, the Model Y has an EPA range of 330 miles (531 km) with an 80 kWh usable battery. That’s OVER 4 miles per kWh (15.5 kWh/100km).
      In contrast, this new Toyota bZ4X electric vehicle only has 222 miles (357 km) for the all-wheel drive model. That’s with a smaller 64 kWh usable battery, which in only 3.5 miles per kWh (17.75 kWh/100km). Not good.
      With poor energy consumption rates in warm weather for EPA testing, then you factor in the Toyota bZ4X’s even worse performance in the cold weather.
      That’s how a car loses 50% of its EPA range in the cold. As you state, at -30C (-22F), that creates a truly horrific 1.8 miles per kWh (34.5 kWh/100km).
      Thanks for pointing out how bad it is. There’s a reason why Toyota only sold a few thousand of these cars worldwide (well, the wheels falling off didn’t help sales), and why Tesla cars are number one in sales in places like:
      California
      European Union
      Germany
      Norway
      UK

      @@TonyWilliams123 Reading more "vastly superior" posts from Tesla fanboys is not helpful. Looking at other legacy automakers, seeing an end result of 1.8 mi/kWh in extreme cold is not uncommon. As for trying to misrepresent Toyota sales, that halt due to the recall is a good reason for number to be lower. Sales for 2022 didn't start until April either. So, the result 24,660 purchased was just fine for a debut.

      @@TonyWilliams123 Don't ignore Elbil24's follow up test: "In the end, they slightly exceeded the initial estimate, achieving 307 km (190 miles) on their standard test route made up of 70 percent country roads, 25 percent on the highway and 5 percent city driving." That's a 25% drop in real-world testing of the entire usable capacity.

    I have been driving EVs since 2014. Cold temperature will sap your range in no time. Charging will also take longer. I took delivery of my 2024 BZ4X XLE last week. Its UI could be better but overall it is not a bad EV at all (AWD is a different story I have read).

      I select the FWD on purpose. So far it’s a great SUV. Really depends on your needs. I won’t be testing it on a 3000km journey, for example. Thanks for sharing!

    Toyota bZ4x does not use heat pump after temperature drops down to -10°C. After that only resistsnce heater (7 kW). FWD consumption is acceptable but AWD can barely get 200-220 km in -15°C.

    How is the lvl 2 charging from 10 to 80 % in -20 or colder? I'm considering this however I don't have a garage so it would be outside all winter in Canada plugged into a lvl 2 charger , also is it like hyundai where if it's plugged in it would keep the battery warm?

    • @BobPellerin
      @BobPellerin  10 місяців тому +3

      LVL 2 did not appear to be noticeably affected by colder temperatures. I would need to run more tests to confirm as this is just from memory.

    I've been on a waiting list for a bz4x fwd with the winter package since June 2022. Obviously you have the 150kw battery. How is the charging at a public charger with your model in the cold?

    • @BobPellerin
      @BobPellerin  Рік тому

      It looks like it’s better than what others have reported but I also keep my SUV in a heated garage, so the battery is never that cold. I understand that future redesigns are going to add another battery heater to the mix. We’ll see. So far it’s better heater wise than expected (I was worried it would be like the RAV4 Prime in EV mode) and a little sub-par for the range at extreme cold temperatures.

    How long does it take to do a thorough DC fast charge (say 10-80%) during a -30C day?

    • @TonyWilliams123
      @TonyWilliams123 Рік тому +2

      I’m glad you asked. This is where Toyota / Lexus / Subaru have truly failed.
      The cars sold in North America with All Wheel Drive (AWD) have truly horrific charge rates in the cold, and not that good in warm weather.
      These cars have “CATL” cells in the battery, built in China. At best, they charge at “up to 100 kW” in warm weather, but in practice, they only charge at about 85 kW maximum. In cold weather, it can literally NOT CHARGE AT ALL, according to Toyota. I’m not making that one up. At best, in truly cold weather, it will only charge at less than 20 kW.
      See the Toyota press release titled, "Five Things to Know About the All-Electric Toyota bZ4X." It was published in Toyota's U.S. Media Support Newsroom on May 4, 2022. Toyota corrected that press release on May 10th.
      For comparison, the top selling Tesla Model Y will charge at up to 250 kW, in either hot or cold weather.

      I haven't had the need to try yet. Hours easily would be my guess. You would have better charging rates if the battery is/kept warm.

    • @BobPellerin
      @BobPellerin  Рік тому +1

      At -30c you are lucky to get 200-220KM on a charge. Everyone’s driving and speed are different, so it’s hard to say exactly what you should expect. As soon as it gets warmer that increases.

    Hello, I have tested BZ4X twice so far. Everything about the car is great. But it consumes a lot and the battery runs out very quickly. Since you have a good relationship with Toyota, I would like to ask you to forward this feedback so that the cars can be updated and the problem fixed.

      I have no relationship with Toyota corporation. I have built a relationship with a great dealer and salesperson. They are fairly straight forward and accommodating. I would urge you to connect your country’s Toyota HQ and talk to them directly.
