I was driving home one evening and heard the first two minutes of this. I had to sit in my garage and hear it to the end - my first time hearing Gene Harris. I have listened to him many times since. He died way too young - such a talented!!
gene harris was a lot higher up the ladder than a lot of people realise he was a fabulous blues orientated player.but he had loads of melodic and technical ammo as well.a fabulous player..r.i.p.
Blessed to have caught this trio twice at Jazz Alley in Seattle. Had reservations for a third show but Gene's liver wouldn't allow it. I already have reservations for the Jazz Corner in Heaven, I'll meet all of you there.
@@GoldWingTV okay, they are not amateurs, but compared to Chopin or Mozart (regarded as the greatest musical minf of all times), they are beginners....
@@hankwilliams5622 do u have any recordings of Chopin or Mozart? Mozart is not regarded as even the greatest classical musician. He’s out shined by Beethoven and Bach. He just had an amazing ear. So does Oscar Peterson, Ray brown, etc. these people are improvising on chord changes far more complex than these classical players at insane speed and accuracy. If you told Mozart to sit down and improvise on Giant Steps or something not diatonic get wouldn’t know what to do with himself. Not to take away from these classical musicians and composers… but the best musicians of all time are also jazz musicians
I had the great pleasure of these these three playing the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz California, probably a half dozen times in the 80s, early 90s. The Kuumbwa seats 200 max, there are no bad seats in the house, and everyone is there to listen, not to party or yak.
IMO, Gene Harris is one of the underrated pianists like Monty Alexander. Actually, both Ray Brown and Jeff Hamilton played (though separately) with Monty with great chemistry. There may be something common between Gene and Monty. Anyway, this rendition of “Summertime” by Gene Harris is among my favorites.
This is excellent. I am not familiar with Ray Brown, but I do know the music of Jeff Hamilton. This is worth listening to and watching. . . .SYLVIA!- FL 7/24/2020
Throw this in at night when you get home from work, grab a cold beer and have a seat. It feels like nothing will ever go wrong in your life again.
The power of jazz

Indeed, I agree!

The way he dominated those keys sent cold shivers through my entire body!!
If that sent shivers, imagine wha a true Master like Chopin instead of these amateurs would have sent....
@@hankwilliams5622 lmao ya these are definitely armatures…

I have a Gene Harris LP signed by Gene and Jay Brown. Anyone interested?
such a sad song about the human condition craving for illusive happiness. Apart from injustice and racism and all that.
Noice.
Don't really like that Gene Harris is doing the same tricks here as he did in Lady Be Good
