On the "why only Willy gets benched," Matthews and Marner were benched at the beginning of the 3rd period. Their first shift was on the 4-on-4, which started at 15:50.
it really looks like they're just falling into bad habits when the pressure rises/things get desperate. if this is the case, that can be coached out. they haven't had him for a coach for long, it'll take longer to get rid of the keefeness in this team. its easy to hit the panic button after every loss when you analyze every single game

thats pretty rough but yeah makes sense. they struggle so much just to get into the zone and once they do they take stupid shots with no traffic and no one near for rebounds and it just gets insta cleared, which again struggle to enter. rinse and repeat. 2nd PP unit for this team has looked much better and much more dangerous. i thought berube was about showing these guys how to get the dirty goals? tips, screens and rebounds are the dirty goals which only occur if you're within like 6 feet of the netminder. yet that area is always vacant.
Oilers: HISTORICALLY ELITE power play that quite literally carried them to series wins, struggles for a few games = Coach splits up the 1st unit. Leafs: PP that has SUCKED since March = nahhh we'll let them figure it out. It's so predictable. JT gets kicked out of the faceoff. Matthews loses it, clear. Drop pass on the zone entry, pass along the boards with zero speed, lose the board battle, clear. IF they do ever get set up, its a perimeter shot that creates a big juicy rebound, but nobody there to capitalize since nobody really wants to play the net front or bumper role. TBH the same problems were there last season as well. They were only covered up by both Auston "best goal scorer in the entire league" Matthews and Nylander having career years. Good to see Berube is picking up where Keefe left off by letting the core 4 have their way no matter what.
This was an interesting format. I do wonder if Auston is feeling the burden of his new captaincy. I also thought it was interesting that the two players the Blues got from offer sheets got three of the team's five goals. If Broberg and Holloway continue to dominate on the scoresheets like this I wonder if we'd see more offer sheets in the future.

Is it me or back in the day teams played their starting goalies 10-15 games before a backup plays...then again 10 games and then backup plays a game. Now it's a hopscotch game. Every game goalie swaps wtf. What happened to the high stamina, steel skinned main goalies that could play 60-70 games a season? Hasek.. Thomas.. Cujo.. Fuhr.. Brodeur.. I don't remember so much emphasis on depth of lines, on changing line make up from game to game, what types of lines to use in what scenarios. In less I'm wrong, just one or two lines (maybe 3). Take the faceoff and play the game. 4. Now talking about lines, let's understand each players role. Matthews = finisher Marner = play maker Domi = passer Knies = low all round but key physical Reilly = defense Tavares = faceoff Nylander = avg passer and finisher Etc on the rest ☝what do we do with that information? Start with the beginning of play at center ice. Set the obvious first. Tavares at center Nylander at wing Domi at wing (Two fastest skating defense) Because I don't know For now let's say Reilly and Tanev Tavares wins the draw. First play (Not dump and chase). Who ever has the puck, shot directly to net (out of opposition zone or in, it doesn't matter). Intent is not to score but to give the puck to the net minder to freeze the puck for a draw in opposition zone. Next faceoff (keep in mind first intention is to just get one goal then defend by playing keep away the puck from the opposition). Tavares at center Nylander at wing Domi at wing Marner and Matthews at defense Many say Matthews is a 200ft player and good defensive forward. With Marner and Matthews on defense, they can play the puck on the blue line to make an opportunity for the forwards to score. When the puck is in the Leafs zone, use your two best defense players Matthews at center Knies at wing Marner at wing ☝intent is to quickly get puck out of zone making the effort to shot at opposition net to repeat the above all over again.

I'm betting on the Bruins Saturday night-they've proven they’ll do whatever it takes to win, which I can't say about the Leafs. Sure, the Leafs will likely make the playoffs, but watching them will be a rollercoaster. It would take a miracle for this core to change their style. At this point, they don’t even seem coachable. It's been disappointment after disappointment, and they look bored with each other on the ice. The power play hasn’t evolved since last season, and their zone entries are predictable. Living in Connecticut in the 80s I saw a good deal of games in Hartford, msg, nassau, and New Jersey. One playoff game in Montreal in 1984. Great trip with my dad and canadiens beat nordiques 2-1 and favourite player Guy Lafleur got an assist! Anyway. Sporadically following leafs cause they were a non threat in NHL in 80s just like Detroit. They were pretty good in the 90s and early 2000s, but now 5hey are supposed to be contenders. Of course I get my dosage of leafs news since I follow the league as closely as I did as a kid with magazines and newspapers, yet why hasn’t there been a change? Last year was DEFINITELY the very last chance the core got together if they failed again. Everyone said that. So what’s going on? As caps fan I am so enjoying it not being about th3 goals record only. It’s about going for the cup on the fly. Will Marner be traded?

This team has stretches where they abandon all structure and when you abandon all structure in the NHL you will get eaten alive. If the core is checked out then the rest of the team will follow suit. The powerplay is also catastrophic, past the point of being bad. Chris Johnston’s tweet about their success rate going back to last year was stunning.
Bruins win 3-0 on Saturday. Idk how much longer you can keep Marner on this team, he’s a luxury piece when the team needs structural support if they can get him to Utah for some pieces back that will actually bolster the roster
as for lines im honestly thinking that Marner needs to push his own line. line 1: Knies, Mathews and Domi. line 2 Mcmann, Marner (center), Willy. third: Robertson, John and Patches/Lorentz. I dont get why they wont put Marner as center for faceoffs and the like, it doesnt really matter once the game is going who is technically center since they move around all over the place.
Bruins have sucked so far too, but thankfully, we usually beat the leafs... although, uh... our only good line is our fourth line currently. fun fact, here's the top five scorers for the bruins: Pastrnak (okay makes sense), Koepke (what?), Lindholm (elias, and makes sense), Kastelic (wtf?), Beecher (WTF?), Lohrei (uh okay?), Marchand (finally), McAvoy (took you long enough), Lindholm (hampus wth man?)... pavel zacha and charlie coyle are 13th and 17th respectively ;-; also sidenote, despite the analytics loving his play so far, and everyone online screaming it, they refuse to put matthew poitras on the second line, and i will not stop complaining until it happens :(

No that would be a dumpster fire. Nylander is at his best when he has the puck, using his speed and edge work to create space and chances. if Willy has the puck that renders Mitch useless since he's not a shooting threat and can't use his vision to pass. Also none of the three wins battles along the boards now, so the play dies as soon as there is a loose puck on the cycle.

Every game goalie swaps wtf. What happened to the high stamina, steel skinned main goalies that could play 60-70 games a season? Hasek.. Thomas.. Cujo.. Fuhr.. Brodeur.. Belfour.. .. hockey has changed. It will never the same. The grit...the toughness is gone. What once was a game full of heart is now just business. This could all turn around if Bettman leaves. 2. I don't watch much hockey due to work. I don't remember so much emphasis on depth of lines, on changing line make up from game to game, what types of lines to use in what scenarios. In less I'm wrong, just one or two lines (maybe 3). Take the faceoff and play the game.
4. Now talking about lines, let's understand each players role.

Marner = play maker

Knies = low all round but key physical
Reilly = defense

I'm betting on the Bruins Saturday night-they've proven they’ll do whatever it takes to win, which I can't say about the Leafs. Sure, the Leafs will likely make the playoffs, but watching them will be a rollercoaster. It would take a miracle for this core to change their style. At this point, they don’t even seem coachable. It's been disappointment after disappointment, and they look bored with each other on the ice. The power play hasn’t evolved since last season, and their zone entries are predictable. When playoffs arrive, it’ll just be more of the same.

First time the team suffered back to back losses by 4 or more goals since 2015.
I don't want the conversation to be "Well, if only Matthews had scored a dozen goals tonight" and the reason the team lost is because he did not score a dozen goals. This is about the team, not just one guy, not just two guys, or even three, or four. This is about the entire team refusing to show up these last two games. Monday night? That was a fun night, that was an entertaining night, and I have my tinfoil hat on saying that, based off these last two games, Monday night was fixed so the prospect of Prime Hockey wasn't going to piss everyone off.

Living in Connecticut in the 80s I saw a good deal of games in Hartford, msg, nassau, and New Jersey. One playoff game in Montreal in 1984. Great trip with my dad and canadiens beat nordiques 2-1 and favourite player Guy Lafleur got an assist! Anyway. Sporadically following leafs cause they were a non threat in NHL in 80s just like Detroit. They were pretty good in the 90s and early 2000s, but now 5hey are supposed to be contenders. Of course I get my dosage of leafs news since I follow the league as closely as I did as a kid with magazines and newspapers, yet why hasn’t there been a change? Last year was DEFINITELY the very last chance the core got together if they failed again. Everyone said that. So what’s going on? The poor bys are tired. They worked really hard to beat Tampa Bay so they reward themselves with a 3 or 4 game self imposed winless recuperation vacation.

No that would be a dumpster fire. Nylander is at his best when he has the puck, using his speed and edge work to create space and chances. if Willy has the puck that renders Mitch useless since he's not a shooting threat and can't use his vision to pass.
Also none of the three wins battles along the boards now, so the play dies as soon as there is a loose puck on the cycle.
You know, I'm thinking the Leafs might be cursed.

Alex Nylander has a goal a game in the AHL, he could probably help the leafs at the wings positions if they would sign him to an NHL deal
Looking at the lineup, it doesn't take too long to realize how shallow they are at centre.
