@En_theo Basically Anish Kapoor bought the rights to Vanta-Black so only he could use it in art. It was really scummy and made a lot of people mad to the point that the folk who made Black 3.0 barred him from using their paint. It was a whole fiasco.
@dragonwithamonocle he's a bodybuilder with a ponytail (or he was 20 years ago) and also put heavy metal quotes on all his handouts. Threw off a lot of parents!
I like that the physical methods used to make surfaces absorb as much light as possible are in a nutshell the same as used to make walls absorb sound e.g. to create "silent rooms".
I still like the fact that Vantablack created a turf war amongst artists when one artist bought the rights to it and refused to let anyone else use it!
Yes! I have cheerfully benefited from that turf war for years by using the super black paint that (I'm sure many people have referenced already in the comments) you have to certify that you are not Anish Kapoor before you are allowed to purchase it!
I painted the inside of my blackest telescope with the darkest black paint I could find. But, first, I coated the inside with crushed walnut shells and glue. It's amazingly non-reflective.
This is super-cool! My foster sister's little sister worked on the original Vantablack project, and my friend's black cat became known as VANTABLACK (always all caps) because her photos looked like they had holes in them.
Last year I happened to see sitting on my garage patio what I believe was an Eastern Eyed Click Beetle. Actually, a very pretty bug, and the false "eyes" were notably very black looking.
Can you do a show on the whitest white? I vaguely remember hearing about a company that created one and said if they could cover enough surfaces it would reflect sunlight enough to counter some climate change. My memory might be wrong of course.
I understand that the surface preparation forms cavities in which the photons can bounce back and forth acting like a black body and reducing the reflectance. For a simple comparison, when you bundle shiny sewing pins together and look down the pointy end it looks black even though the pins are highly reflective because deep down the gaps between the points the photons bounce around before they come out so that you are looking at the temperature of the metal instead of a single bright reflection which tends to be the temperature of what is reflected. You can approximate a black body by using a bundle of sharp pins or a stack of sharp razor blades and looking into the sharp end. So thank you for mentioning that black is related to both the color and the surface roughness. For example, white telescope observatory domes can be both good reflectors during the day and good radiators at night.
Did you just casually mention possible vantablack or even darker SPIDERS?! Nature has gone too far! That’s just a cruel game for arachnophobes! They’re in the arctic, they’re in the desert, they’re in the ocean! There’s probably one in space right now!
Hmm but the solar cell technology is about anti-reflection, but not about maximum absorption. The absorption happens in the cell itself, while the dark colour is due to the anti-flection coating.
I think the funniest thing about ventablack is that they engineered their own downfall. By making it so exclusive they pushed more people to make their own then would have otherwise tried.
I guess I’m stupid. Why would you need this? As Ian so wisely said, “You were so busy trying to find out if you could, you never stopped to ask if you should.”
The people who made vantablack were kind of dodgy. They let a single artist, Anish Kapoor, patent it's use as a colour for artwork exclusively for himself. Imagine having the audacity to try and patent a colour.
It’s not really a patent, it’s just exclusive control of supply. Still one of the biggest middle fingers to the art world, and further cementing Kapoor’s legacy as the most hated and hatred-worthy artist in the world. If you’re ever in Chicago, try to get a model of the Bean sculpture. It will be incredibly difficult if you can find any. Want to know why? Look up the designer.
Actually, black holes do emit light via Hawking Radiation, so they're technically not absolutely black. In fact, ultra-small black holes (ones with a radius of around a proton) would emit a ridiculous amount of energy*, almost like a hydrogen bomb, as they rapidly shrink into nonexistence. *It should be noted that some models of black holes have some lower bound to what mass black holes will decay down to. But such mechanisms don't seem to have a ton of evidence at this stage, so we really don't know if such a boundary exists.
6:21 Oh, come on, that acronym easily rolls off the tongue if you're not American. You should try a holiday on the beautiful island of Krk, you'll be able to pronounce "Vacnta" after that!
actually, for it to cool the surface it's on, it doesn't just need to reflect light very well, but it also has to have a dip in reflectance right at the wavelengths of infrared normal-temperature objects emit by black body radiation.

Are you guys, like, scrapped for cash or something?
By watching this video I certify that I am not Anish Kapoor, nor am I acting on behalf of Anish Kapoor or any of their associates...
😂😂 well played!
My sense of humor is so dark, Anish Kapoor tried to trademark it.
Omg this is such an underrated comment.
Did you provide a link to Anish Kapoor? I saw that part highlighted blue
BAHAHAHAHA YESSSSSS
I don't see what you did there. Mind to explain ?
@En_theo Basically Anish Kapoor bought the rights to Vanta-Black so only he could use it in art. It was really scummy and made a lot of people mad to the point that the folk who made Black 3.0 barred him from using their paint. It was a whole fiasco.
Elder goth nerd here, very happy to become a void in the future. 🖤
"I'm only wearing black until they make something darker" - my high school science teacher. Well... he doesn't have to wait much longer!
A quote also famously attributed to Johnny Cash as well! Your science teacher has good taste.
@dragonwithamonocle he's a bodybuilder with a ponytail (or he was 20 years ago) and also put heavy metal quotes on all his handouts. Threw off a lot of parents!

Same physics, just a slightly different scale.
I see a red door and I want it painted black. No colors anymore, I want them to turn black.
That last method was discovered here in British Columbia, and I'm friends with the first researcher listed on the paper! Hi Kenny!
*Goes straight to comments

I saw the title and all I've got to say is... I heard somebody say you were looking for me, well here I go!!!
To watch this video you must certify that you are not Anish Kapoor or watching it on behalf of Anish Kappor.

"this wood has 24 karat gold plating. trust me."
You might call it... gold leaf...
@@Tahoza oh snap! good one!
Not calling Vantablack2 "Van2black" was a total missed opportunity.
The parallel upload with Jacob Gellars Fear of the Dark video was wild
I was literally about to comment on that. I need to jump over and put a comment + like on the youtube version of that video, thanks for reminding me!
You're not dealing with an ordinary super black any more. This is....ultra black.
if it got any darker, it would have to be... super ultra black
@xyvazkrown8048 Black Frieza confirmed as blackest black.
Also, it's Complete Ultra Black.

This title brought me here
Savannah Geary is a *very* good science communicator
One day a radical faction of the Asteroid Belt might end up covering several rocks with this.
Beltalowda!
Sa sa que?
Good thing we got our OLED TV to watch this episode lol
vantablack is a supervillain name fs
We call him Dr.Umar
This title sounds like a skit from Chapelle's Show or The Onion.
Europeans in 1800 be like:
Right around Jacob Geller posted 'Fear of the Dark.'
Serendipitous.
I appreciate the update on this topic!
Paul Mooney in a dashiki
A multi structured nano film is needed. Like a forest where the trees have branches and those leaves. With different trees for different wavelengths.

1:08 you're positively glowing to my eyes right now ma'am
Blacker than the blackest black times infinity
Your videos are awesome!!!
This is the darkest video on youtube,
did the thumbnail change in front of my eyes
Did you just casually mention possible vantablack or even darker SPIDERS?! Nature has gone too far! That’s just a cruel game for arachnophobes!
They’re in the arctic, they’re in the desert, they’re in the ocean! There’s probably one in space right now!
You just reminded me of that space movie with Adam Sandler.
jokes on you, i have a lcd screen, even blacks glow for me!

Muso black is pretty good but expensive. Black 4.0 is supposed to beat it but I’ve yet to test it
"Super black wood"🤔🤔🤔
“How much blacker could this be? The answer is none. None… more black.” -Nigel Tufnel
I saw the notification before the thumbnail change.
I was going to watch the video either way I was just busy when it got uploaded
If mirrors reflect light, why are they silver
I guess I’m stupid.
Why would you need this? As Ian so wisely said, “You were so busy trying to find out if you could, you never stopped to ask if you should.”
They mentioned telescopes and ultra efficient solar panels in the video...
Scientists are looking for the blackest black? Hold on, lemme get my friend.
There’s the comment I was looking for!
⛹🏿♂️
I swear to god, if you're trying to help Anish Kapoor get his hands on another black paint, I'm telling Mom.
Das raycis or sumthin
Where's Wesley Snipes.
Zach from Wild Kratts is gonna be so happy
This looks like another step toward an actual practical cloaking device.
well, that's crazy 9:40
So that’s what they mean by “Advanced Darkness”…
Keep anish kapoor away from this video though! 🤫
I learned today. 👏
I wonder if anyone can make a black as black as described by Terry Pratchett, absorbing anything above infrared and turning it all into heat..
The people who made vantablack were kind of dodgy. They let a single artist, Anish Kapoor, patent it's use as a colour for artwork exclusively for himself. Imagine having the audacity to try and patent a colour.
Don't like most companies trademark the colors they use in their logos, at least only for only their type of store?
@ultranovva
They do, but that trademark only applies to logos that are similar or for a competing company.
It’s not really a patent, it’s just exclusive control of supply.
Still one of the biggest middle fingers to the art world, and further cementing Kapoor’s legacy as the most hated and hatred-worthy artist in the world.

Is there a title for .01%? I think Jamie Foxx would agree that it should be called "exceptional black."
11:45 lol vogelkop already means birds head
Ok... where did you get your sweater?
Insane title
I like my coffee black as midnight on a moonless night.
Finally, something that can compete with my humour
Isn’t it just the center of a black hole? No light escapes, can’t get any darker than that, right?
Well if light can’t escape, it’d stand to reason that it’s actually quite bright in the center of a black hole, no?
Actually, black holes do emit light via Hawking Radiation, so they're technically not absolutely black. In fact, ultra-small black holes (ones with a radius of around a proton) would emit a ridiculous amount of energy*, almost like a hydrogen bomb, as they rapidly shrink into nonexistence.
*It should be noted that some models of black holes have some lower bound to what mass black holes will decay down to. But such mechanisms don't seem to have a ton of evidence at this stage, so we really don't know if such a boundary exists.
@ Black holes just seem to defy everything.
If we define black as the absence of refletions of any wavelength, woudn't that make a perfect vacuum 100% black, as it doesn't reflect any light?
No, because the light travels through the space, without a physical object to absorb the light it can't be (scientifically) "black".
6:21 Oh, come on, that acronym easily rolls off the tongue if you're not American. You should try a holiday on the beautiful island of Krk, you'll be able to pronounce "Vacnta" after that!
Take a shot every time you hear the word 'Black'
Soot from burning acetylene is pretty dark.
i am not anish kapoor, and i am not watching this video on behalf on anish kapoor
12:23 but only if they fully absorb the lessons from nature
Good video.
I feel you missed a fairly large part of the story by not mentioning the butthole, Anish Kapoor, and his relationship with Vantablack.
You don’t have to scroll very far to find the comment you’re looking for.
If scientists are reflecting on it then they haven't accomplished yet. :P
None of those compare to my childhood…
When you said vatna it sounded like you pooped your pants.
Platinum Chou Kuro Black fountain pen ink...
you guys try Wesley Snipes
Great video. Would love to see one on the opposite of this: the whitest white, so much so that it cools whatever surface it is painted on
actually, for it to cool the surface it's on, it doesn't just need to reflect light very well, but it also has to have a dip in reflectance right at the wavelengths of infrared normal-temperature objects emit by black body radiation.
*Nathan Explosion voice* Blacker than the blackest black times infinity!
Lol this title SO doesn't sound good without context. Had me laughing for real
Black and yellow (gold) is back!
No mention of Musou black?
fuligin
Didn't BMW cover a car with something like one of these materials?
its like emoer than emo
The final sentence 😂
seems like the best "coating" for starships!, if you want to travel unbothered, dont be reflective!
You probably have Dip Your Car's attention.
Black 4.0!!!
But seriously, the stuff is so black it hurts to look at for too long.
It’s like, how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black.
Clever of using electrical charges to make it black. Its eating photons.
My soul look like this
That's not the blackest black... they haven't seen my ex's heart yet.
I want to wear an ultablack t-shirt with a body-shape matching/proportioned to me image of the inside of the human body.
