I am 72 and my husband is 74. We have lived through high inflation, high interest for mortages, big medical bills and unemployment.
People waste $$$$$ on things that really bring them no value.
We use items till they are worn our and not repairable, including cars.
I am not trying to impress anyone. I try not to buy things unless we really need items.
    Good advice, Dawn.❤❤❤

We bought an above ground pool for this years vacation and many vacays to come. Usually we spend around $2,000-$3,000 each vacation. I’m a cheapskate, if it were left up to me, I’d never spend money on vacations. But, my hubby loves em and he works hard and we do have money for it, BUT, with the economy the way it is, we decided on a staycation instead. Much cheaper and we’re out in the country. We live near a lake and have a big kayak to do that together. It’s all good 😊

I don't stress over inflation...yet. I qualify for food banks, and some don't even have financial qualifiers. I also have a teeny dab of food stamps. I'm very thankful, but it is very small...$23 a month. I don't need clothes, except for one robe, but I have one to wear till I can get another one. It's thread bear, but I can still use it. My sister buys me socks and underwear for Christmas and birthdays. I barely drive at all. For the last 2 years, I've only had to buy a tank of gas 2 and a half times a year. This year, I've only had to buy one tank of gas and I still have half of it. My car is old, and the day will come when I need another one. Not sure how that'll turn out, but I don't have to know now. I keep putting a tiny bit a month away for it, but it's usually $5 or less. The car is a Subaru, with less than 100,000 miles on it. It's 18 years old.
I've always been frugal and a saver. In order to squeeze every last penny out of my low, fixed income, I've been having no-spend years. It's only if I really have to have something that I buy, and then only after research and price comparison.
When I was saving up to buy a house, I tried to live on only 1/2 my income. I never got it quite that low, but I kept trying. My dad taught me that.
I also tried to save 25% of my income for retirement. I never got it quite that far, but I got it up to 21%-23%. At that time, I had a large enough income to do that. In times of less income, I still strove for the same goals, but clearly couldn't get to those percentages of income!
    Love you Money Mom ❤️😊

Excellent advice! I love this. After dealing with my father-in-law's estate, we kept a lot of his things. Thankfully we have basement storage and are making boxes of household items for our children's own apartments someday. Some of his furniture was better quality than ours so we kept his and have put things on Facebook marketplace for sale. Also things that were too junky for sale, we put out by the street with a free sign. It was a nice way to help our neighborhood. Most things have been taken. Looking for ways to help others keeps us from feeling sorry for ourselves even when times are difficult.

What a great idea putting together boxes for your children's future homes. My husband is clearing out his sister's home. Her health is declining, and we're bringing her to live with us. The concept of only having a room for all she wants to keep is overwhelming. So, we're boxing up things that will go into storage units. One climate-controlled and one not. You're lucky you have a basement! ❤

@@3TXSisters Wow! That's really kind of view to bring his sister to live with you. It is overwhelming to see the amount of stuff that's been accumulated. My father-in-law lived alone and had a 3 bedroom 2 bath fully functioning house, so my husband and his sister tried to divide it up pretty evenly, donated some stuff, some was trash but we still brought home a lot more than we could actually need or use. My husband doesn't want to part with a thing. I'm grateful for a full basement but we did have to build new shelving units, Buy new storage bins, and it's going to take a while to process all of the stuff. Who needs 10 spatulas LOL. Actually I wanted to get a storage unit but my husband didn't want to do that. It will be nice to bless the children with a startup kit having towels, sheets, and kitchen things though

    • @3TXSisters
      @3TXSisters 3 місяці тому +3

@pajamamama5965 If I remember correctly, your father-in-law died rather suddenly. So, it may be harder for your husband to let anything go right now. My husband wants to keep any paper that he considers historically relevant. So, he must look at every scrap. I try not to say too much, lol. I thought it'd be easier and less expensive to put an air conditioner in the garage and build some storage up high, but he's set on getting storage units. ❤️

#6 Volunteer. That's a good one, for different reasons. When I was a medical records clerk at a hospital, we had volunteers who worked part-time, and they were given free lunches everyday in the cafeteria. It's an easy way to get a free meal everyday, just work a few hours. I might do it after I don't have to babysit anymore. (If they still have the program.) And if I live close enough to the hospital to make it cost-effective with the gas. It'd be perfect if I was in walking-distance of the hospital, then I'd get a free walk everyday, also! I do miss working in a hospital. I've also thought about being a Hospice volunteer.

I go shopping with 20.00 and think about what I really have need of and then if i go over 2.00 that is fine but I will not go back into the store sometimes a month but I look for best deals on food I Blanche and freeze my vegetables. I make sure I place them in individual bags buy only on sale i get chicken on bones only so i make meals with skin and bones i cook chicken and put in freezer bags after I cook it i buy only 10 pounds so I have at least 10 meals normally I get more than 10 meals but just saying I use very little meat. I take 1 pound of hamburger. I take a cup of oats and grind and grind breadcrumbs. Put all my spices in it mesquite which is sauce garlic I place wax paper down I get a big ice cream scoop flatten the top, and put it on the wax paper and I make at least 7 to 8 hamburgers. I just put wax paper up on top of each ball and roll it out really thin like McDonald’s hamburgers would be thin and that’s what we eat for burgers and it’s only 1 pound of meat for two people all kinds of ways to enjoy life without giving all your money away or not having the money to buy. There is always a way, but we must think about it. Keep a smile on your face, knowing that God prepares for all and away be thankful for what you have and give God glory. I hope this helps people. I remember in the early 70’s hearing my Mom complaining about having to pay almost $7 for groceries and only got 4 little bags. Mind you we only went to the grocery store once every 3 or 4 weeks . We did have our own beef, pork ,milk cow and vegetable garden. Prices have increased but the same people who are complaining usually look like they haven’t been missing meals and can afford to go out to eat and go shopping for clothes . As ‘bad’ as we think we have it there are people in the world that would be thrilled to have what we throw away as waste as their only food .

Inflation fatigue? I'm focused on dodging inflation like I'm in "The Matrix" so it really hasn't been much of an issue. Years ago I built our lifestyle from the ground up focusing on providing for our needs and modest wants, constantly finding new ways to save. Most weeks, our spending consists of nothing but basic groceries that are bought on sale and topping off our fuel tank with $15 of 87 octane 100% gasoline (no ethanol). Incidentally, tap water is my favorite drink and most sodas have really bad ingredients and fail to quench your thirst. Rather than feeling like I'm depriving myself, I like to focus on the positives of choosing something better, in this case water over high fructose corn syrup and a bunch of other chemicals. Other beverages I enjoy are Martinelli's sparkling cider for special occasions, home made lemonade, fresh unpasteurized apple cider in the fall and once in a while we'll have a 16oz Sprecher's Root Beer that we split either for floats or in frosty mugs. The mugs we got for free so long ago we don't even remember from where although it may have been a work party. We never had much use for them since they only hold 8 oz but they're perfect for splitting the root beer. I even remembered where they were, way in the back of the cabinet that holds all of our glassware where they sat unused for 30 years.
I'm not blind, I can see the inflation all around us, I just choose not to participate in it. A few months ago I received a $5 off $5 coupon from a hardware store so I went to find something I needed which was pretty difficult because I already have everything I need. I hadn't been to a hardware store in the past few years and I was shocked by the prices. Of note were 5 gallon plastic gas cans that were $25. While this is far higher than what could ever be reasonable, I have 2 cans that I'm currently using with another 8 brand new ones in storage that I bought years ago for $7 each. Alternatively, if I did need a new gas can I would instead choose a high quality metal Jerry can for $50 which was too much to pay when plastic cans were $7 but now worth the smaller additional cost...2X vs 7X. Incidentally, I chose to buy a package of 2 rolls of the Velcro straps I use on all of my electrical cords that I was running low on. They were also higher priced but after the coupon a very good deal.
During the 2008 Great Recession we had a 50 week unemployment stretch during which time my wife needed emergency surgery followed by an 11 day hospital stay. While it was stressful at the time, we were able to make ends meet on unemployment alone and worked hard to pull through. I watched as people's spending went from higher ends store to Target, then to Walmart and finally to the dollar stores. I marveled at how it never occurred to people to just stop spending their way to insolvency even as they lost their homes. I remember seeing a video of a family that came home from shopping just in time to see their belonging being put out on the street. Now credit card balances are getting maxed out as folks continue to spend money they don't have and we all know what comes next and it's not fun to watch.

This is an important video that you made, it reminds us that we always have a choice about our attitude! This also does not mean that we deny that a problem, such as inflation, exists. Could we have a better economic system? Yes, in my opinion. However, we can be involved in positive change for a more enlightened system while working with the one we already have.

I watch videos like yours, which are positive, full of good ideas, and give HOPE! Then, I try one or two of your suggestions, which makes us feel in control and know that you CAN change your circumstances! Thank you for creating these videos and this community :) I also love the 'how to eat for $10/wk.' kind of videos out there, and now like the challenge of trying to see how many meals I can get out of the least amount of money. It's like a game, these days, but at least it makes a tough situation FUN, and I've learned some great new recipes along the way!

I like the group you had to share and support, however people don't bond like that anymore. They do everything online.
Perhaps church groups are more abt getting together.
I do see laughter as a good remedy.
I have noticed your drive to lead your channel to not focus on the primary driver of what is causing the crunch, and although I appreciate you trying to add lightheartedness into the mix, I believe you are doing a great disservice to your viewers. As every generation according to you has had financial stress, we are in a movement in this country driven by deeper issues than the cost of FRESCA being too high.
I get tuning out the need to catch a reprieve but do not get in the habit of being a denier of what is truly happening. Don't lead people down that path.
Financial change, being frugal to gain stability comes with a cost. However, being a country that has serious issues and leading its people down is another.

People still bond like that, but someone has to take the reigns and make it happen. In our area, that falls on me. I organize game nights and bowling weekends and fun things. If I let someone else in our group of friends decide, then it doesn’t happen. And they love it, but, not everyone is that kind of person. So, if you’re that kind of person, make some calls, get it scheduled. It’s fun ! 😊

I do not go into politics on the channel. I like to keep it positive and light. If people want to make a difference, than it is important to get involved in what is happening.

@@CentsibleLivingWithMoneyMom it's not about politics. Our economy is thwarting us and the stress you talk about is a symptom. Frugality is just that, and you did open the door today by discussing ways to deflect so you inadvertently discussed the very issue.
There is no simple anymore. So if you want to stick with the premise you can't talk about stress lol. There is no stress with being FRUGAL. It's a way of life not a hardship.
I have just followed you for a few months but you seem to be all over the board. I don't find your channel about just being frugal, and you have discussed so many more issues which are not light.

I bought 2 canisters of pepper spray I didn't actually "need", but I justified it because they were half price - only $7.99 on temp markdown from $14.99! I try to avoid making impulse purchases, but the previous lowest price was $9.99. That's my best tip - just watch the prices on anything you're interested in. Leaving stuff in your Amazon cart and checking the price updates helps. 🌶 Sacramento, California USA 🇺🇸
