I return to Chepstow near the mouth of the Wye Valley, the town where I spent the majority of my childhood. I revisit many of the places I remember and reminisce about my life when I lived there. One major part of living in Chepstow was that it was where I first discovered the enjoyment of walking in the countryside, so on my return visit today I decide to go on a walk, which was one of the very first walks I ever did as a child…..
Filmed in the Wye Valley in the counties of Monmouthshire and Gloucestershire. Locations include Chepstow, the Dell, Chepstow Castle, Lancaut and Wintour’s Leap. This is the first in a series of films in 2018 celebrating 25 years of “The Solitary Rambler”.

"The Solitary Rambler" is my series of amateur films of my journeys in the countryside accompanied by my own musical scores, which I compose and perform on my Yamaha keyboard.
Please note that, as with all the films I make, this is not actually intended to be an extensive guide to the area. This is a mini-movie of my personal journey along the walk, in which I often share some of my own personal stories.

I was born in 1952 and lived in Bulwark till 1973, now live in Spain. My roots are in Chepstow and the Wye Valley. Nice video.

A few of these locations were used in an episode of Casualty from 1991 that featured a mountain rescue. The episode featured some spectacular scenery.

There's no wonder as to why you enjoyed part of your childhood living in a lovely place like Chepstow, Patrick. The bridge spanning the River Wye is an eye-opener of a structure. The castle situated on that huge outlier of limestone is so impressive, too. The town itself has some lovely buildings within it's streets, and the views of the Wye from Wintour's Leap are most excellent. Again, what a lovely area to have lived in! A most interesting film Patrick, and so, many thanks.
I didn't appreciate Chepstow when I lived there as I hated school so my childhood memories aren't the best. However, I've appreciated it much more if I ever go back down there. The castle is iconic on the cliffs and Wintour's Leap is lovely too. Thanks Ffranc for taking the time to watch 👍

I knew you'd like this one as I remember you saying you hoped I'd revisit Chepstow :) It was always in my plans to do so this years as it's all part of celebrating 25 years since the very first film in 1993. Yes the Five Alls is still there although I hardly went in as I wasn't quite old enough to drink in pubs when I moved away from Chepstow. Thanks Frank, I did spend about three hours filming around Chepstow, by which time I thought I wasn't going to have time to do the walk to Lancaut and back. I had no idea Chepstow was like this,I only knew it as a place where horse racing took place (I think)
I didn't know it had a castle,let alone one as magnificent as that,or that you could cross the border over the bridge,and I didn't know that the surrounding area was so beautiful with the cliffs and river and abandoned church,and I didn't know Offas Dyke path was there,so again,I have learned so much,thanks Patrick,great music too.
I am so glad at the end credits you have done away with the Bob and Martin pseudonyms and credited yourself to the fact you do absolutely everything in these films.

Well 2018 was going to be a special year due to it being 25 years since I made my very first film back in 1993. Therefore, I decided I wanted to go back to many of the places seen in my earliest films, and shoot them the way I do now, so as Chepstow featured a little in the very first film, it was a great place to start for the first film in 2018. Glad you noticed the end credits, I had received several messages by this time asking who Bob and Martin were, so I thought I needed to reinforce to viewers that it is actually me doing all the work on the films. What a super video Patrick and I bet the memories came flooding back when you arrived at Chepstow, which I think looks really lovely. I adore the imposing and rather posh mansion at 12:22 do you know anything about it please? I loved the lovely score you composed for this video and as your two favourite pastimes seem to be walking and music, what a fabulous way to bring both together composing scores for your walks!!! This was brilliant; I had no idea just how charming Chepstow is! The old Wye Bridge is a stunningly beautiful design too; when does it date from? A fantastic film of an amazing part of the country.Out of curiosity how 'Welsh' did Chepstow feel when you were growing up.
Its got a Saxon name and the local accent is virtually the same as Gloucestershire,were there mixed feelings when Monmouthshire was handed over to Wales in 1964?
Thank you for your lovely comments Mike. I don't recall how Welsh Chepstow felt at the time I lived there. It was more after I moved after and they gave it a Welsh name Cas-gwent - never understood why this happened considering Chepstow was not in Wales originally.

Well the clue's in the film Gary, moved to Chepstow in 1969 just before I reached the age of 3. I'll leave you to work that out from there :)
