Dear David, Please slightly revise your title from "An Appeal to Heaven" to "Appeal to Heaven". The letter of 20 October in the Year of Our Lord Jesus 1775 from Colonel Joseph Reed, aide to Commander in Chief General George Washington, clearly states "Appeal to Heaven", and is the Library of Congress. So did a letter from a British Navy Captain describing America's First Navy Flag, though Appeal was spelled incorrectly, that is in the British National Maritime Museum. Also, on a grammar basis, Appeal in "An Appeal to Heaven" is a Noun, whereas Appeal in "Appeal to Heaven" is a Verb, an ACTION WORD. Indeed, it is akin to a Continuing, Collective Command from the Commander in Chief (George Washington) for all Americans to "Appeal to Heaven" to pray unceasingly for America. You say in this video "We must take action." True, we must all "Appeal to Heaven" to our Father who art in Heaven to guide, protect and defend us. In November A.D. 2004, I was a keynote speaker for the Navy Chaplains Conference at Founders Inn beside Regent University, for which I began researching this Liberty Tree Appeal to Heaven Flag, the First Navy Flag, known also as the Washington Cruisers Flag. I soon found the proper motto, "Appeal to Heaven", NOT "An Appeal to Heaven". Three years later, working on tips from various flag experts including Dr. Whitney Smith, and Peter Ansoff, I found Gary Laube who discovered the ONLY surviving "tree" flag from the Revolutionary Era, the "Southhold Flag". I asked Mr. Laube to send me a digital color photograph of his discovered flag, and he kindly did so. There was a triangle tree, or a Trinity, with a tree trunk attached. Having been the Signals Officer on the USS Independence (CV-62) in '76 to '78, it was an "aha, why didn't I think of that?" moment. In the high winds at sea a more simple design would last longer, and with no sewing machines, of course the tree design was going to be as simple as possible because a 4, 6, 8 or 10 branch tree created a quantum increase in work for each flag stitched. Anyway, with a few other clues from the flag, I fashioned a flag faithful to the facts of History. As you did some years ago with Washington's connections with Masonry, you may like to have one of your researchers contact me about the Liberty Tree Appeal to Heaven Flag.
