Just a note as it keeps coming up - Valentine's Day does have religious origin in St. Valentine's Day, still a feast day in some churches. But for the vast majority including the Amish it's not celebrated as a religious holiday nowadays. It's a secular holiday. Similarly you can find religious roots for Halloween (All Hallow's Eve). "Religious holidays" are those with clear religious purpose or rationale for their current observance, like Good Friday, Ascension Day (for most Amish), etc.
We was invited one year to my friends house one Thanksgiving that is amish. The letter I wrote to her 2 weeks beforehand if there was anything I should bring. She asked me to bring my potato salad and coleslaw. But she said in the letter make large batches tho. I made 2 huge throw away pans and drove an hour and half to her place. Her dad is the bishop in their area and told me to go to the barn with the food. Their barn is huge so there was 4 wood burning stoves going and around 100 people there. That was just family they were expecting more. There was nearly 150 people there and no leftovers to gather up. We was the only English there because her dad considered us family and was thankful God brought me and her together. We go every other year so next year we'll be going back. And me and her are both counting the days.
Wow! Call me nosy ,but how did that happen? Like how did you become friends and her parents approve???
In my area I can always guarantee an Amish wedding is going on. They told me it's popular because of it being a low English traffic day.
I loved hearing the children's choir - good harmony! I agree that thanking God every day for our blessings is the way to go. It's a good way to find peace and stay happy in life.
I’ve been to Amish weddings on Thanksgiving day. In the community that I’m familiar with, it’s a popular day to get married. The food is amazing. There’s usually a group of people working together the make fresh mashed potatoes. Another well known dish for weddings is the stuffing and the cream of celery. I remember when my friend, Mary was getting married, her mother was growing celery just for the occasion.

I am Lutheran & we get together on Thanksgiving morning for worship & a pot luck meal. I have been taught that Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks for the many blessings of the year & just to be thankful to have made it through another year. Its also a time to celebrate that the crops are in (a very hard working time for farmers). Many churches used to have worship on Thanksgiving morning or the night before. Hope you have/had a Happy Thanksgiving.
I used to live in Romulus in upstate New York I had Amish and Mennonite I enjoyed all of there baked goods they are very polite I see them in quartzite Arizona in the winter
One of my ancestors said the prayer at the first Thanksgiving (and authored the Mayflower Compact).
My mom remembers going to her Amish relatives at Thanksgiving when she was a kid. She sometimes would go there for Christmas as well. Her Grandmother that was raised Amish always had the best cooking. Family togetherness was very big in that family. Even though the later generation was not Amish they still got together around Christmas time for a reunion.
Thanks so much for another great video. I recently moved to Upstate NY and enjoy having the Amish as neighbors. The other day an Amish woman asked me to drop a handwritten note off to her sister at another farm 10 minutes away and it made me realize how often so many of us take technology for granted at times. I have Settlers of Catan, still in plastic wrap. I have nobody to play it with. We like Scrabble and Parchesi. On Christmas Eve on my mom's side we would play board games.

Hi Erik-this Thanksgiving dinner sounds almost identical to the one my Italian relatives served on Thanksgiving in Hershey, PA. (they were Catholic). Overnight Salad is also known as a layered, or 7-layer salad with the ingredients in a buttermilk or mayo-based dressing. Usually there's crumbled bacon in it too. And you let it sit in the fridge overnight so the flavors of the ingredients mesh together. Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
Thanks for that explanation Lisa - didn't have a chance to research it (I am no food specialist, more just a fan of eating :D). I actually think I may have eaten that salad numerous times, or some version, at Amish homes but without knowing the name. Sounds really good. Happy Thanksgiving, I'm about to go eat now!

Happy Thanksgiving, mrs. Zook has asked me to her home many of times she has a large family she always said one more plate is better than one less. I know around here families get together some of them large and some of them small but the one thing they have in common is a know that they are loved. On this day remember it is not about the turkey and the dressing the noodles and mashed potatoes and gravy you can tell what I like, is about the one sitting around the table and remembering what all we have and remembering those that have gone on, ensuring the good times that we've had with them even though they have passed on we all try to remember the good days in the fun days. My family has Polish origins. Lots of similarities and lots of differences. Food is generally similar but in addition to the traditional Thanksgiving food, you'd have kapusta (cabbage, pork, beans) and maybe pierogi (similar to ravioli). However, at least in our family, Scrabble was very important as a board game. A way to improve their English and have fun!
Hey thanks very much! I am quite familiar with those foods as I have a Polish grandma! We actually have pierogi sometimes at Thanskgiving meals as a little extra.

I lived in Bowling Green Mo for 9 years.
Lots of Amish around, seen then all the time in town and I use to do business with them a lot. They processed alot of my deer every hunting season. Are they a very strict sect? More than some. They seem more primitive in some ways more than others I’ve seen in other states. They always seemed stand-offish in ways but some would talk and friendly.
Yes they are on the bit more conservative side. But probably as you found that doesn't mean they are all closed off or unfriendly towards non-Amish

There are some traditional Catholics that will actually go to mass on Valentine’s Day as well as have family traditions unfortunately this was taken off of the calendar as a holy day of obligation I think we need it back along with many other important days on the liturgical calendar.I am in agreement that in some cases it is considered a secular holiday but it is really not in its origin

Valentine's Day actually has a religious basis. Originally, it was a Catholic Feast Day called Saint Valentine's Day.
Right I included the on screen note, kind of with that point in mind. But by "basis" here I meant more having a religious reason or purpose to the holiday, which is not really why most celebrate it now (though, it's still a feast day in some churches) 👍

I read another site about the Amish which kept calling all their habits "strange." I don't find the Amish "strange" at all.

I agree, I don’t think that we yank God enough for our many blessings. Part of my mom’s family was Amish and I have learned more about how to incorporate my faith in God into my daily life. I want to truly live for Jesus every moment of my life.
Amen we could never thank him enough if said it 24/7 but always pray and get forgiveness , and ask for his guidance.

Our local community has weddings on Thanksgiving, because weddings are on Tuesday and Thursday in November. I guess that’s traditional.

Valentine's Day is a religious holiday... the feast of Saint Valentine.

For Catholics Valentine’s Day is a religious holiday it is because Saint valentine died to promote Christianity and its teachings on marriage the Roman government if I am not mistaken what is for bidding marriage because they wanted the men to go off to war he was performing marriages even though he was banned by the government to do so. Many Catholic families will pull out the books talking about Saint valentines and serve valentine treats to their children unfortunately many Catholics have lost this tradition but I love Valentine’s Day because it really stands for the two things that are supposed to be a part of our society God family marriage the Bible talks about the structure of marriage the man is the head of the household as Christ is the head of the church he is not to Lord over his family but to discipline instruct and sacrifice himself in love of his family and his children as God loved the church.

You made a comment about Autumn being the wedding season for the Amish people. I'm not trying to be sarcastic or funny, but is it so they will have their babies in the springtime after they get married? And I say this because they are very agrarian based, and much of their livestock would be on that same cycle of springtime birth.
