That video is a famous video that was posted a long time ago. If you look into the video those stallions were fighting because the bay stallion came in to try and steal the other stallions mares. They weren’t trying to hurt the foal. However, the mare was in fact being protective over the foal even though the stallion wasn’t trying to hurt them.
Incredibly scary watching those stallions fight so close to the foal. A lot of people romanticize wild horses, but they sure do deal with a lot of harsh and dangerous situations. Thank you for stepping in and saving the foals whenever you can. ♥

I had seen that video with the momma fighting for her foal years ago. I remember my heart was in my throat.😅 I've sent that to so many horse friends, who have the same reaction. But, thank you for the explanation. I'm in the U.S. and adopted a Mustang mare 15yrs ago, when she was a 2yo. Just knowing how mares protect their foals, I didn't realize so many would be left behind. I do have a friend in Oregon who took care of quite a few Mustang foals, but I thought it was because of the roundups. When people think it's so romantic too see the wild horses, in reality nature can be brutal. Thank you for what you do!❤

Sometimes its just scatty mothers who dont bond with their foals and sort of 'forget' they have them, I've seen that too. It doesn't take much to distract some mares or push them off the foal. I think there is a crucial timeframe when the new bond can be broken.
I've heard also during times when a new stallion take a heard he will also attack foals that are not his. also forcing the mare to move on with out the foal. I saw a video years ago on this. I was HORRIFIED seeing the stallion attacking the foal...now remember this was some time ago I saw this. my memory may have missed a few key factors in the video but I still see this in my mind. OMGosh I had to go look for it and I found it. the foal could not get up something wrong with its back legs..so sad..and during that time another band of wilds came in and they found the foal tried to encourage it and the stallion called Looking Glass move in and and well you get the picture.

He is exceptionally beautiful. Hope you keep him. Would love to watch his growth across the weeks and months. His personality is precious.
Do you happen to use a drone for looking for them? I can’t imagine having to ride over all of your property looking on a regular basis. This little guy is so handsome with his 4 white socks!
I had an Arabian mare that rejected her first foal. One of the books I read said that in the old days when the mares lived in the tent with the owner that when the mare foaled they took the foal off the mare and fed them camels milk. It freed the mare up for riding without the hassle of the foal.
I think my abandoned foal went through this ! Those selfish bastards ! There is a certain amount of time to feed this baby ! This might explain why she is afraid of other horses. She was brought to me May 17, 24 we figure she was born May 1-10th? She was so weak when I got her. ❤ she is now 3 1/2 months old and doing great! And just had her first trim . Yes we’re a little late but at least her feet are done !
Common in herds where a New Stallion has taken over. Especially if the foal is a colt of the prior stallion. The new stallion wants to eliminate future competition from old Stallion. Not common if is a Filly born.
What state is this in please? So they have wild horses on public land? No local state rangers or some such gvt service that manages wild horses on public land? Tx for your work and video - never knew about this.
The BLM manages them but has a habit of rounding them up and leaving them penned for life because they say there isnt enough land and keep wanting cattle grazing
Umbilical Hernias have to be handled ASAP. Not past 1 -2 years. My mare had one . And her hernia is sealed, but she’ll never be able to foal. It’s not safe . So she babies this little Savannah Rose 🌹
Can you imagine having to fight for the life of your baby immediately after giving birth? Thank you for all you are doing for these horses.

There would seem to be an element of natural selection in play as to foal abandonment.
What about twins? Sometimes when one of our cows has twins, the mother will reject one.
Horses rarely have twins and can die if they do. On the rare occasions the mare and foals both survive, yes, they can reject one.

More domesticated mares occasionally reject /refuse their foals, as well. Abandoned or rejected foals aren’t terribly unusual, for many reasons.
Can you use Drones to help find abandoned foals quicker? I hope so.

In Alberta, so many foals are killed by predators. It is pretty sad; not many survive to 3 years old.
How does BC, Canada manage the wild herds in your area? I think in the Western US they are rounded up for auction.
This/these herds are on private lands.
I am sure predators get a lot of the foals. It's sad but it's also solid proof that wild horses never have to be culled.

It’s illegal in my country to take the foals. Point being is that the mares nearly always return to collect their foals.
