Haven't had to actually fight since highschool but I ALWAYS went first. I waited until I knew there was no way I was going to get out of this without a fight so...go first.
Same lmao. I've only fought in grade school and highschool, and I always strike first. I'm not going to stand there and let some jerk yell at may face.
A rule of thumb I have adopted for situations like this is to yell “STOP” at the person and throw your hands up as if the police just told you to put your hands up and say “I DONT WANT ANY TROUBLE”. That will attract attention and people will see that you attempted to leave and/or deescalate the situation (assuming people are around). If that person continues to move towards you and is now in your space (with in arms reach) then all bets are off.
Best self defense instruction available on line. Love what you do. Always admire the dedication of you students (?). Nicks capacity for abuse is truly awe inspiring. Nicely done.
My favorite opening is to feign a punch to the face, then low kick to shin or knee. It's quite difficult to hit the solar plexus, as it is a small target, and brawlers usually have good abdomen muscles, so body blows do very little to them.
I agree with you regarding the SP being a small target and therefore not really practical. But “favourite opening”? How many fights are you getting into, mate?😂
The last fight I got into was at a party many years ago, I had no idea this guy was a judo expert. I started by kicking him in the never parts but was surprised when he didn’t flinch. So I started punching but within a short time he had me in some kind of neck lock on the floor. He asked me if I had had enough but I couldn’t speak because he was crushing my vocal cords. I am a bit more reluctant to start now, maybe best to wait.
There are times when you just have to take an ass whipping or you'll be seen as weak. You should still strike first and make sure you get as many good shots as you can. It helps instill a little respect and shows you're not worth the hassle in the future.
If you are not good at fighting I suggest fleeing. No shame in that. Its better than getting put in the hospital. People think they are good but they usually are not, even those that practice may not be ready.....mentally.... when things don't go as planned.
I'll never not punch first in a street fight. I've been unlucky enough to be involved in a few where the only option was to defend myself. Had I not punched first, it could have turned out very different. I have practiced my punch my whole life, and I'm very glad I did because they were effective when I needed them most. 👊
Your video makes so much common sense. I think it's something we can all learn with practice like you say always always when somebody's on the ground in a fist fight, do not pursue it walk away that way you are not the aggressor all you did was put the threat to the ground
This is true most people assume that if the bad guy throws a punch at you , you should react and yes of course you should but my dad and uncle once told me that even if he puts his hand on you or grabs you, you should be ready to defend yourself because he is going to punch you after the grab anyway.
Can't say I've ever seen a video on this channel that wasn't useful in some way. I like how you ground everything within your own experience. Keep up the great work!
I'm an easy going guy, i'm the most tolerant of the bunch, and i've got pretty amazing negotieting skills. But, if, i'd ever had to go, i'd go all in, no rules.
Love their approach to street fighting. Pragmatic, measured, and violent threat responses. No bullshida advice for no bullshida situations. Whatever it takes to get the job done efficiently.
I'm a pretty serious dude. I've had seven fights in the last 18 months. I won every one of them because I always struck first. The girls I attacked just mustn't have expected my preemption. And I always approach from behind. Works every time.
Thanks for this video. I like the intro. An aggressor invades your space while you back up... and you are alone... or he's got friends on the side (maybe in a blind spot off-camera.) You're testing. He's answering. I've never had instructors nor seen anybody talk about escalation (and de-escalation.) Can you make more videos about "reading" situations or people's intent? For example: What are some places or objects in a room, stairwell, elevator, street, sidewalk, etc., that are advantageous or should be avoided? What are some things to look out for, e.g., do they have friends? If so, where/how should you move/position yourself? What are some things that you can do to test, gauge, or defuse a person before going 0 to 100? Please make more videos like this, please. It's an important part of the fight spectrum, i.e., the pre-physical part, that doesn't get explored enough, e.g., the environment, the interaction, and the signs that people ignore or don't know how to manage. There are no martial arts or systems that bridge this gap. And it's how people get sucker-punched or worse. Once again, thank you for this video.
Like Master Ken mentioned, I’m the nice guy with fighting skills that’s not looking to hurt anyone, but I do believe if and when you feel it’s truly going to be a confrontation, you get yours off 1st. But I am also confident that if they get off 1st , I’m not going to fold. You have to keep your mind strong and be prepared to push on. Remember it’s a fight and you may get hit.
A long time ago, in junior high, the school bully was approaching me from the end of the hallway, yelling obscenities at me. I didn’t want him to come any closer so I quickly positioned both my arms back and threw them forward, one palm up and one palm down. Well, wouldn’t you know it… a Hadouken came out and knocked his ass down, hard! Everybody cheered and the school bully never messed with anyone again! 🔵⚪️
Thank you for teaching this Study, Dr. Phillips, and Nick, (and interview man). I have a question: can we neutralise by hacking down with the elbow with the intention of shattering/ dislocating the collar bone, or Fa the collar bone with an open handed strike. Is any of this realistic?
This sounds good and all till you get arrested for throwing the first puch even tho you were only defending yourself, while the instigator gets to walk away scott free.
as a bouncer for many years, we'd lose our job if we went first. I'd have to wait for someone to throw a punch for me to react. on the street though, I always attack first if someone is obviously trying to bring me harm. surprise is key. love the video
Yes. Once the line has been crossed, when you know the time for diplomacy has ended, strike first so that you can disengage ASAP. The times have changed drastically from when you could duke-it-out and then go have a beer with the guy. So end it pronto so you can get the hell out of dodge. Much ❤️ Much ✊
I was in a few tussles, not many but I can remember at the point I struck first. Sometimes it was when one guy was facing me while his buddy quietly circled to one side to ready himself to throw a punch. Almost like a poker tell....easy to read. Other times he was in my space and drawing back......
I haven't had a fight since I had my first daughter, but before that I used to fight for anything cause I couldn't control my anger, and trust me u get close or push me you would be on the floor with me or without xD. Nose was always my fav target, reason why I have many fractures on the boxer bone, cause if I missed I could hit a forehead in the worse case.Too close elbows or forehead, mid range then x one. Brazilian childhood taught me how to defend myself and quick or get the consequences.
I feel sorry for Nick. That poor guy keeps taking solid punches to the solar plexus and ribs but keeps going while trying to smile and not show that he's in pain. Also, those punches to the solar plexus can be a very dangerous place to hit a person because it is NOT an empty space below where the ribs meet the sternum. A bone called the Xiphoid Process is there which protrudes below the rib cage and if punched it could lacerate the diaphragm muscle, lungs, stomach or even the heart. In a defensive situation it would be better to punch the aggressor in the stomach rather than the solar plexus because you want to stop them, not kill them.
Thank you, this has been an issue for me. Personally I do what I can to alter and avoid, sometimes you just have to accept that moment in time and respond to it.
3 distances kicking punching throwing also three hights standing kneeling lying ground Once the opponent closes the distance you step back to maintain kicking distance… If opponent continues to close then It is considered an attack and you counterattack attack with sen no sen too close means one can not react quick enough. Never initiate until the maii ( distance ) is violated. It is best to incite opponent and let him initiate for bystanders to see.
This argument totally depends on each individual situation! for example I had an altercation with a guy at my gym recently... he was coming forward at me but I controlled the range by creating a fence... he was saying a few words(aggressive words) but I could just tell in his overall demeaner that he wasn't fully committed to striking me, in the end I didn't hit him, I just controlled the range, he eventually walked away, then 10 minutes later came up to me and appoligised, we ended up talking for about 20mins and he even said to me- "I was waiting for you to hit me first".. so I was proved right. If I had just hit him then I could have seriously hurt him or vice versa, but my ability to read his overall body language is what stopped a situation from getting bad!.... it is NOT always right to "hit first"... as I said it's a case by case thing and to just tell anyone watching this to HIT FIRST is wrong, all it take is one punch to kill someone, always try to use your brain first! obviously you hit if you really really feel threatened not just some guy posturing as is the case in many situations
Larry Holmes trained me, but in street fights I'm 10-10 and 2 more importantly still alive...make whatever choice you feel is best keeping yourself alive even if its not fighting. Again I was a boxer who was trained by the Heavy Weight Boxing Champion Larry Holmes in 80s 🌎 during his reign, and I prefer not to fight in street. You can hit him first but his friend you dont see behind you can shoot you first - be aware!
I've been in over 500 Street fights, starting when I was 12, the first time I knocked someone out I was 16. Street fights are very dangerous, many times I dropped guys on concrete or asphalt and many times guys told me I was gonna kill someone doing that. But fights just happen in life and it's kill or be killed. Use un threatening word while you move within punching range and in the middle of speaking swing hard as you can and aim for the chin, that's the KO spot. Don't stand around and admire your handiwork because police will be there soon. Take off fast before they get there. It's best to avoid fights if you can. I spent 18 years in prison and accidentally killed a man
When someone is getting in you face. Hold your arms out with you elbows locked. This will keep the person away from you. As he charges you collapse on elbow, while keeping your others arm elbow stays locked At this point, you can spin the person around, while use his momentum against him.
Im glad you touched on the subject of what level to take it to? You should not go nuclear when a conventional bomb will work just fine. But of course if someone is really trying to break you it is ok to return the favor. Especially if they pull a weapon.
I've been sucker punched in the back of the neck. It was one of those which I didn't see coming. Assess and respond, if you feel the threat you take the first hit. The problem with holding back is their first point of contact might be your last. I've seen a small guy hospitalise a very large guy within a matter of seconds. I'm sure many of you have heard or read about people being killed with a singular blow. Some perps are so violent, they'll continue beating on you even though you're unconscious.
When someone gets aggressive I always wait for them to throw a punch so I can counter it. I figure if I block thier punch my punch is likely to land. Also sometimes they won't even throw a punch but just yell at you.
I'm concerned about hitting first. In court, a verbal assault isn't grounds for a physical response. I was sued once for it. He even shoved me, so I hit him and split his lip. He sued for facial disfigurement. My attorney said, if it leaves a scar you'll have to pay him. Thank God it didn't. The attorney said the law clearly states the first to be physical is always at fault.
I recently just got cornered in a parking lot by an angry driver, he blocked me in and got out of his car so I got out of mine, he said he was gonna kick my ass so I kicked him in the stomach, punched him in the face twice, almost choked him out but decided to kick him away instead and told him to leave. I guess I could have stayed in my car and called the cops but I'm the type to handle business on my own. Definitely not gonna try to difuse the situation or wait for him to strike first. It was funny though cause he said he was gonna kick my ass and then stood there while I kicked his ass. Always swing first, don't give them a second to react.
Not legal advice. But depending on where you live, you can be charged with assault, battery, etc for striking first. Take the first hit, you could end up with legal fees, lose your job, end up with a criminal record, see jail time. It's not worth it. Act defensively, but never swing first unless you have proof that you were acting in self defense.
I was taught early on that if you thinks it's coming hot first and smother them because "getting punched hurts". I'd also like to add I was told always give them one warning like a gentleman should. "If you do that again....". They always do it again
I think a lot of people don't want to strike first is the legal aspect. If you strike first you can't say it was self-defense. You can be charged with assault. If it's a life or death situation well then do what you have to do. Worry about the legal stuff later.
me personally, when it's that close. I do a quick uppercut. Not a lot of power is needed. It knocks them back with the head up so you can come in quickly with a over hand boom right on the chin again. If they still wanna fight after that Good Luck Your Fighting someone with experience lol
if they put hands on you, definitely... but it can get really really tricky if the law gets involved in the USA... it even varies from state to state, and even judge to judge... lots of times if you don't turn around and attempt to leave, you can be charged with assault. same with reporting, usually the person who reports first is most likely to not get charged... if you aren't worried about the law (really really really really really rare), probably a good idea, however... if you know how to kick, don't let them get within range. if you don't know how to kick, learn... everyone has a good right hand, if you can avoid that, its best to.
21 yrs in the prison system as a security supervisor and responding to over a hundred fight situations. Some involving staff but mostly inmate on inmate and the ones who talk the most trash are really the cowards and the real badasses dont do that...they just protect themselves and stay out of the way for the most part. The punks are some of the best fighters due to their way of life and the drama they create....
It depends on your fear level. Me personally, try not to fight anymore but when I did, I would hit you first after a minute of heated argument. The argument won't shut you up, so maybe my fist will. I also learned if you are the aggressor, you get in their head first and therefore win. It's all based on fear and confidence in oneself.
You are awesome my friend. I love all the thought you put into all of this; the psychology, criminology, and physiological traits that indicate if someone is about to attack & if you should attack them first. It's really, a beautiful thing.
I Always have hit first, bullied in school every day. Last time was when I knocked the kids teeth down his throat never hit anyone ever again because I knew I could really hurt someone. Never been bullied since now I'm 42
99.9 fights usually go to ground.unless you can Tko whoever you having it out with, with that first punch. that's why Dujitsu is a pretty formidable style.
If you have had a bit of training make him attack make him hit and miss those who attack always swing and try and take your head off! i've had it someone who always attacks you on the street will always attack your head first!
How do you maintain control of a situation that is violent. You can't think or worry about if you're using out of proportion aggression. Smash them then worry about it
Doesn't matter who punchs first or second. It all depends if there are witnesses or cameras. Only need to prove you were being assaulted and acted in defense.
Its have to be safe distance.. by watching videos in UA-cam most of attckers the first approach the right distance for theme to knock the victim.. So it have to be safe distance by majoring the tall of the person and but visually distance so when the attacker strat punch you have the ability of moving away or you van call for police while he trying to approach to the victim.
The question is should you punch first? Not, do you want to hash out possible outcomes if you do. The demonstration was an option to do so if you feel it's necessary. It's understood we are liable for our actions. Should we feel it was necessary to hit first he's not saying to beat the attacker senseless. Strike if you must and get out of there to a safe place. An assault charge is better than a hospital or a morgue. I'm not advocating looking for trouble. Only you know what the threat is to you and only you are responsible for your actions. Think about it ahead just in case you're ever in this situation. It's another tool in your tool box. Know one is saying to use a hammer.
I think you will get a criminal record for hitting first if it's not clear enough that you are not the aggressor. I suggest you back away, say stop to the other person but while you are in a ready boxing/fight mode. This way you will attract attention to witnesses that you are not the aggressor. Then go for it if he still comes at you even threateningly and you don't know for sure if he will strike you but at this point don't take any chances. God bless. Keep your heart clean and God will make you fearless.
Should you be asking why you're getting into street fights, and mayby should you be getting into college/University instead steet fight. Plus whether you punch first or second the other dude has a knife. ??
WHEN i use to box my trainer said be first....any fight I'm in which is rear I do...i had a guy got in my face 3 times and he said some rude shit he could know me out I warned him 2 times on the 3 time Plam strike to the nose full force...we punched a bit he got me but he ran off after a toe punt to the balls.....No kids for him. I now would walk away. I was held back by some people.
*Eastside Low Bottoms sh*t !* _Tappin' in from South Central LA_ Hell yeah, that's what i was told since a kid. Where I'm from, it's known as "Bomb first !"
that's going to get me killed. I experience an attacker recently i had to knock him out right away and end the fight. The guy was super aggrasive with me. he could have pulled a weapon
Haven't had to actually fight since highschool but I ALWAYS went first. I waited until I knew there was no way I was going to get out of this without a fight so...go first.
Yea, i i learned to throw first after getting socked in the jaw a few times. Never again I told myself.
Good point as your only choice, that's what I gonna too but going to hit him hard he won't know what happened.
Lol
That is reasonable.
Same lmao. I've only fought in grade school and highschool, and I always strike first. I'm not going to stand there and let some jerk yell at may face.
ive never really laughed during these but holy shit Nicks reaction to these punches is everything lmfaooo cheers i needed that!
A rule of thumb I have adopted for situations like this is to yell “STOP” at the person and throw your hands up as if the police just told you to put your hands up and say “I DONT WANT ANY TROUBLE”. If that person continues to move towards you and is now in your space (with in arms reach) then all bets are off.
I like how you think stranger....
Facts because if it goes to court. Witnesses can say you had your hands up in nonviolent posture
Ok. Nice
Great reply ..
Good advice

I have a pain in my belly of watching Nick get those punches... and still smiling. Kudos for him

Remaining proportionate to the escalation will hold an individual in good stead. Being able to articulate ones actions.
indeed, and a body shot would be seen as much less egregious than a head/throat shot.

Great video mate! -I hope you bought that guy lunch that day...haha! Good sport.
I cannot recall a single time I have thrown a punch in a fight. I have used joint locks, though. Only a moment has been needed to deescalate.
I like the different aspects your implementing in this video. Keep up the good work!!

Nick is a trooper. You better start sleeping with your eyes open punching him like that all the time lmao!
@jasonConley 🤣👍🏾 Thanks for watching! 😎🙏🏾
If there is a fight declared take the first punch keeping him on the defense. He will be to busy running .

You killed a man by punching someone ?
When someone is getting in you face.
Hold your arms out with you elbows locked. This will keep the person away from you.
As he charges you collapse on elbow, while keeping your others arm elbow stays locked
At this point, you can spin the person around, while use his momentum against him.
Thank you for all of your honest insight on self defense. GOD bless you
Did he sneeze?
Im glad you touched on the subject of what level to take it to? You should not go nuclear when a conventional bomb will work just fine. But of course if someone is really trying to break you it is ok to return the favor. Especially if they pull a weapon.
That was great. Thanks for the Tip !!
Great video and informative as always!! Thanks!!
The second someone touches you or even says that they plan to do you harm is when you go.
That first punch will knock you out one day. Stop taking risks punch first.
"I figure if I block thier punch my punch is likely to land". That's a big if!
Fight your fight ..Nice video..
That is exactly my worry and always has been. Wish he would have talked about that.
If there is no doubt what's coming, one is headed for the chin.
very useful love your vids
I think a lot of people don't want to strike first is the legal aspect. If you strike first you can't say it was self-defense. You can be charged with assault. If it's a life or death situation well then do what you have to do. Worry about the legal stuff later.
See and feel the threat, don’t think just GO.
Use the good old Chael Sonnen line: "I CAN'T LET YOU GET CLOSE!" and swing.
me personally, when it's that close. I do a quick uppercut. Not a lot of power is needed. It knocks them back with the head up so you can come in quickly with a over hand boom right on the chin again. If they still wanna fight after that Good Luck Your Fighting someone with experience lol
Do unto the man as he would do unto you. Only do it fucking first . Always lived by that rule
if they put hands on you, definitely... but it can get really really tricky if the law gets involved in the USA... it even varies from state to state, and even judge to judge... lots of times if you don't turn around and attempt to leave, you can be charged with assault. same with reporting, usually the person who reports first is most likely to not get charged... if you aren't worried about the law (really really really really really rare), probably a good idea, however... if you know how to kick, don't let them get within range. if you don't know how to kick, learn... everyone has a good right hand, if you can avoid that, its best to.
Props to Nick for taking the hits. That's the same spot to apply the Heimlich maneuver, hehe.
I like letting someone swing on me first, counter attacks work better, plus you see the type of fighter they are, tire them out and just unleash!
I Love Ur channel, kick ass shit, Thank U I will be sure to follow U. Thanks again!
Nick is a good sport!
If you have had a bit of training make him attack make him hit and miss those who attack always swing and try and take your head off! i've had it someone who always attacks you on the street will always attack your head first!
My only problem with this is if a witness sees you striking first then your getting nicked. Any thoughts please.
How do you maintain control of a situation that is violent. You can't think or worry about if you're using out of proportion aggression. Smash them then worry about it
Good to know info.
My uncle said from a young age if you feel threatened and violence is inevitable, always punch first. Apologise after
If there is going to be a fight, make sure you're the first person who knows about it.
Doesn't matter who punchs first or second. It all depends if there are witnesses or cameras. Only need to prove you were being assaulted and acted in defense.
If you' hit trow first you have more chances stopping enemy....be ready exarcice
Who's the aggressor when you advocate a first punch
if you're in range, you're fair game.
This is an easy one… ALWAYS!
He said sorry then gave him more shots 😂
Strike first, strike hard, no mercy
Downward sidekick to knee then run
Should you be asking why you're getting into street fights, and mayby should you be getting into college/University instead steet fight. Plus whether you punch first or second the other dude has a knife. ??
Always.
*Eastside Low Bottoms sh*t !*
_Tappin' in from South Central LA_
Hell yeah, that's what i was told since a kid. Where I'm from, it's known as "Bomb first !"
Last time I threw a punch the guy didn't even see the punch to block it !, all 5 right crosses landed the same place . VERY NASTY .
Hello, sir!
I have a question. Is it normal to be scared in a fight?
If no, is there a way you can control your emotions?
that's going to get me killed. I experience an attacker recently i had to knock him out right away and end the fight. The guy was super aggrasive with me. he could have pulled a weapon
