"You make a fool of death with your beauty..." Who writes poetry like that? Most incredible thing about her, she sounds the same (wonderful) live as she does recorded. Which means her talent is allowed to show through instead of being overly processed when recording.
I finally got the chance to see her live in concert. No performance has ever made me burst into tears as much as hers did. The energy, the love, the aura this woman carries is beyond this world. I would love to go back and experience that performance again and again. She is just remarkable ❤
Right? I saw her for The first time Last week and cried The entire concert. She was like a barefoot woodland creature who magically stumbled into our realm. I'll never forget her show and I'm dying to see her again. Hunger was The second song she sang, but I was already done by then.
I remember holding a bottle of pills thinking of ending it all. I bought this album and blasted it and just sat there, listening. This song came on and I started dancing alone in my room still clutching those damn pills. Thank you Florence, I'm still here.
This woman is truly one of best artists of our generation, and for me personally she is the best. I am so lucky and happy to be able to live in the same period as her and to be able to listen to and watch her work of art. Every word and every note hits the mark and her songs are able to connect with the listener on so many different levels. She has been an inspiration, a voice of sanity and the cure for me through all these years. Thank you Florence for making this beautiful art. All the best regards to all the other Florence lovers across the world from Serbia :)
+ThefamousJezzie Call us when Sia writes for Florence and not the other way around. Call us when Sia has a usable falsetto. Call us when Sia can hold notes for over 14 seconds so that Florence can tell her to double it to meet her record. I love Sia and they're both amazingly talented, but Florence has her beat in quite a few areas. One of them being writing versatility on subjects, references and genres.
My boyfriend sent me this song. I didn't listen to it right away, but when I did I was in the hospital. This song is quickly becoming a sort of comfort that I cling to when I start to feel like I'm being crushed and overstimulated by too many mental and physical pains at once. Much thanks to the man who honestly played a huge roll in saving my life and changing it for the better. If you happen to see this somehow, you know who you are, Sir.
The beauty about the statue in this video, if you look at it, is that it's gender is mixed. It has both feminine and masculine features, and it is also "broken." Around it are statues of men in the background, with very beautifully carved masculine features, but this statue stands alone and it's a perfect example of sexual awakening. The yearn to be different, to expose that hunger and *feel* it. What a poetic scene to see....
It's not just that the statue is broken, it's "wounded" in the side and on the palms. The statue is supposed to be Jesus. Hence why in the latter half of the video the statue is at the center of s many scenes of worship. It's also important to note that the statue isn't so much gender mixed as...portraying Jesus as a trans man. Listen, for a couple centuries now, the mythology is that Jesus was born of Mary, who was unmarried and in these recent centuries did not conceive Jesus with a man. So unless God worked a Miracle Y chromosome (or androgen sensitivity), any child produced by parthenogenesis is going to be X0, XX, XXX, etc. and more than likely AFAB. But we also know from the same tradition that Jesus was a man. and this is a pretty reasonable reading given how much queerness of other kinds are on display in the video (pretty much no one aside from a few scattered characters in the beginning aren't coded as some sort of Queer, so strongly it's barely even subtext). We're meant to understand the Queerness suffused throughout the work.
@@xovvo3950 oh my god you just gave me a whole new perspective on this mv and it made me love it even more 😩 that's such a cool way to look at it and as a queer person myself it feels special. thank you!
There is something about her music that has saved me time and time again. I was assaulted my freshman year of college and listening to her music has made me feel like I can get through it and I can finally be me again. This is the song that helped me find myself again and I can't thank her enough for that. This song and her song Delilah helped me through it more than anyone could ever know; i hope i get to tell her that when I see her live.
I’m so sorry you went through that. Thank you for your vulnerability. There are some artists who have this unspeakable gift to convey messages of healing. I’m truly grateful for Florence’s art.
Thanks for having the words I didn't have. I just had a immense need to cry from gratitude and love and inspiration. It is beauty. That song and the clip are just perfect.
Saw Florence and the Machine in concert and she is an angelic being. Seriously the brightest person and most energetic person I've had the opportunity to see in concert.
I want to thank and appreciate Florence for being such a beautiful and unique individual. Her talent and creativity shines through in each and every release. She is such a free spirit and is true to herself. Her lyrics and voice are one of a kind and I know she will go down in history as one of the great artists of this generation ✌🏻
As an anorexia survivor, I can relate... This song hit me hard the first time I heard it. Just by listening the beginning: "At 17 i started to starve myself/ I thought that love was a kind of emptiness". I suffered from anorexia for 3 years of my life, and I remember that period as the worst I've ever experienced in my entire existence. The way she dances in the video reminds me of the liberating sensation I felt when I was fully healed. When I started to love myself again, free in mind from unhealthy thoughts, seeing myself as a bird, able to fly again, far in the distance from the mental cage I built with my own hands. A beautiful song that means a lot to me and to many people out there. I love Florence ❤️
There’s something in Florence and the Machine’s music that’s almost like a flame being lit in your chest that never fails to gives you a rush of adrenaline.
I don't really understand what she means with that about love being emptiness. Because I thought that hunger was related to sexual desire but then she started to talk about love in drugs and love in the stage and I get that the meaning is deeper than that, but I still don't understand what does she mean with "I thought love was some kind of emptiness". Emptiness because you don't find somebody? or because you don't love you? Like if she was seeking for love and that was her hunger?
KGP0075 Yes that's why I ask. I wanna know what you think the meanning is, because sometimes people understand different things in the songs because they lived different things than you have, and that way you have like a million different ideas and meannings of the same song and I don't know, I just like that 😁
SuperCelia2 hmmm just a guess but maybe before she had no real concept of love... she had only seen love as abuse or lust or the false love she talked about on stage. So it was empty to her, something that required her to give something inside her away.
i think that because she writes about an eating disorder right before that line, i imagine that self-love to her was being hungry, being LITERALLY empty of food. love was being empty. that might just be surface level but the deeper meaning could be one of the interpretations above :)
I love Florence and her music so much. I'm so happy she moves me to this day. The joy when I discovered Lungs; I feel that same joy now. Florence has always been there for me. I've celebrated my happiest moments with her music. On the worst days of my life, when I was torn apart and hopeless, I listened to her to numb the pain. I'm crying... Thank you so much, Florence. For everything.
When I see her dancing, my eyes fill with tears. The way she dances is simply beautiful, free, powerful and above all abysmally honest. Florence transforms emotion into motion like nobody else.
For some reason I'm always anxious when she releases something new and I don't know why because I'm NEVER disappointed. I'm very attached to the Lungs and Ceremonials eras and I always fear that her music is going to loose that magical, ethereal feeling at some point (wasn't sure about HBHBHB at first) but somehow it's always there, even when she explores a completely different style. I just need to accept the fact that this woman is incapable of making bad music ! She is evolving beautifully.
I get the feeling. Lungs is by far my favorite album so every time I see that she has released new music I get anxiety although I totally fall in love with each of her songs from the first moment
I've been listening to this every day at least 14 times. When I'm home alone, I play it full blast and just freely dance in my room with no care in the world. Even though the world is a tough and unkind place.
Mauro Soto Bravo I think the things she sings about in this song are issues humans have always struggled with regardless of what century they existed in.
I have connected to Florences journey though music in a way I have never done with any other artist - in so many ways she has mirrored my emotion, my turmoil, my hope. I absolutely love that feeling.
hunger is literally the best pop bop ever written. the violin? the drum kicks? the piano? THE CLAPS? like 3 different shouting choruses? the way you use your! body! baby! my wig peaced out a long time ago for this Woman but she really outdid herself with this one
pop..... bop??? Oh yes the violins and drum "kicks" were all the rage during the pop bop era. I remember the big bopper using such things. Let us now speak about "THE CLAPS!" AND SHOUTING CHORUSES?!! o.... m....g......... pfffftttt
I went throgh some very rough times in 2019 and was in a constant state of sorrow and hopelesness. Thankfully, many things and people helped me get through those awful months. But whenever I was alone and this song popped, and Florence sang 'don't let them get you down, you're the best thing I've seen' it felt like a hug from an old friend. Even now, two years after that I get tears in my eyes writing this and remembering all that. I just wanted to say thank you, that was a much needed hug.
Florence and the machine is waaaaaay beyond or separated from any band right now. Florence Welch still does her own thing as she keeps on sounding so original and her voice is just the cherry in top the cake :)
Antonio Torres Finally! Thank you! It kinda bugs me that a lot of people on the internet are too oblivious that Florence + the machine is a band, NOT a solo artist. She's with five other members. Yes, I love everything about Florence and the music they arranged together as a group. Looking forward to THEIR fourth album, "High as Hope", which is set to release on June 29th. 😍😊
Florence is life. She's perfection in human form. I just want to dance wildly in an open field while this plays in the background. So much love for this.
seeing her dancing like that, wild and free makes me feel like I'm slowly falling in love with her. It's so much vibrant beauty ..and the song itself is a masterpiece.
I don’t think we talk about the first 45 seconds enough. It gives me goosebumps! The strings slowly coming in, rising, paired with the distant “ooh-ooh-ooh-oo-oo-ooh” sends chills up and down my back. Then my hairs stand up, the goosebumps come full force once Flo’s voice is in my ears, after the 46 second mark. It really sounds as if she’s next to you. Florence is truly a godsend to the music community. We love you, Flo! ❤
It's amazing to see how she has evolved personally and musically after being in the scene for almost 10 years. The best thing about this song is the fact how it contains the lively vocals of "Lungs", the darker lyricism of "Ceremonials", and the organic production of "HBHBHB"; complimented by a newfound maturity in her presence. Florence is finally back to bless us with some great music...! ♥
Luke Official it's like you know someone and in your mind you just assume that death will never touch them because it can't be possible to lose someone that beautiful or someone that important.
This video is obviously about Jesus the Christ. “Death, where is your sting?” Jesus conquered death by “using his body” to be the ultimate sacrifice atoning for all mankind’s sins. Jesus tells us not worry.
I'm here just to say how beautiful and strong this woman is facing her struggles with such grace. That inspires me every single day!!! Thank you Florence!!!
the song's slowly building up with Florence's magical whoos and then bursting up with high vocals just like a misty morning with gentle breeze turning into a sunny afternoon
I remember the day this song came out. Me and my little niece were dancing so much to this one. Now I have a newborn nephew... Now I can Rock him to sleep to this song and keep the memories and tradition going😊
Ever since I first heard Dog Days, I was in complete love. Florence’s music touches me in a way I don’t know how to explain. It’s like her songs are a soul, and a book, they’re poetry and they remind me of the most wonderful things of life. Like being in a cottage in the woods, with the green and the grass, reading a book, magic and adventure. It’s life and love. 🌱This is Florence’s music.
Anyone else like her dance moves on 3:19 when she sings "Tell me what you need, boy you look so free. The way you use your body baby come on and work it for me"?

They're just too good ! Florence is one of the finest vocalist of this generation, the lyrics are ALWAYS true, and the sound isn't just mainstream screenching. Been following them since 2011
I heard this on the radio for the first time the other day. It resonated for me and made me think of my daughter so much and her fight with anorexia and her mental health. She’s doing amazingly now and starting to fly but will always be fragile ☺️ beautiful song
FATM music reflects the natural maturity of a human being if you ask me. Dark experimentation is all over the first two albums while calmness and determination could not be more obvious since How Big How Blue How Beautiful. This one sounds like it's sequel.
"At seventeen I started to starve myself. I thought that love was a kind of emptiness"
I won't ever get over this line
same
@Anne-Marie Robinson I suffered it too and that line melt in my heart.
As a former bulimic guy it really was such a powerful line I love her music it’s so poetic and beautiful
It can also be seen to mean she starved herself of love. It's a double entendre.
@Calvin Michael Jonas some people aren't happy with themselves, most have an issue with their weight. They think starving will make them look better and that they'll finally be happy themselves.
It's mostly female that do it to ourselves. Ive been there and this is my favorite line

When we do admire someone else's energy and not only that but they're happy sharin with us no matter who we are. I would write a pretty song too.
She wrote this song about her anorexia, so I think she is talking about how she should value more than her physical appearance.
OR,... or... She likes how the trunk on that elephant swings... eh?? EH?? High 5?? Someone?

She's fairy, the way she moves is so magical, so fluid, is absolutelly mesmerizing. Her voice, i don't know if her voice is angelical or diabolic, i just know that i love it.
her voice is symphonic, like a orchestra with all registers complete
Saw her in concert in ATL last year. I promise she’s just as good in person 😩👌

Most incredible thing about her, she sounds the same (wonderful) live as she does recorded. Which means her talent is allowed to show through instead of being overly processed when recording.
TRU FACT. when shes not pissed out of her head that is. Though thats another sign of a genuine artist, so double TRU fact.

The world is better for you being in it, however hard that may be to believe sometimes. I hope you're doing well.
This comment is extremely relatable, so I can only think " Same "
Zlatan Marinkovic she's cool but that's sia hontey

Still can't believe no Grammy nominations for her this year
You mean the scammys?
I know but people were complaining just because Taylor ariana and other artists weren't nominated😐
Honestly this year’s Grammy nominations are even worst than last year, it’s no surprise the show’s viewers are decreasing every year.

A beautiful sentiment but the statues in the background are mostly of women.
@@TheriusT there are actually 2 different shots with other statues, one with all male, the other all female
@@xovvo3950 oh my god you just gave me a whole new perspective on this mv and it made me love it even more 😩 that's such a cool way to look at it and as a queer person myself it feels special. thank you!
expose which hunger exactly?
There is something about her music that has saved me time and time again. I was assaulted my freshman year of college and listening to her music has made me feel like I can get through it and I can finally be me again. This is the song that helped me find myself again and I can't thank her enough for that. This song and her song Delilah helped me through it more than anyone could ever know; i hope i get to tell her that when I see her live.
Ruby My heart pours out to you 💛 & honestly same- I hope you continue on to find peace.
Same ♥️ Hang in there ♥️🙏
I’m so sorry you went through that. Thank you for your vulnerability. There are some artists who have this unspeakable gift to convey messages of healing. I’m truly grateful for Florence’s art.
yes, Delilah has done, is doing the same for me, too. Strength to you.
i can't quite put words to how florence makes me feel... but there's magic and pain and happiness and love and wonder and beauty.

Florence can't make a bad song even if she put her everything into it, everything this magnificent woman touches is a masterpiece
em you mean if she does not put everything into it
Amin Opda no, what I meant is that even if she puts everything into making the song really bad it wouldn't work because she can't make bad songs
She is an Oasis in this desert of life
Every frame is a painting on its own. This is.... perfection.

Oh my ! I was just thinking the same ! That is so true 😍
That’s a perfect description
I am 67 and it gives me such a feel good feeling even at my age!
So aptly put!
you just put in words my feelings 😉
"I thought love was some kind of emptiness" and "You make a fool of death with your beauty"
*BEAUTIFUL LYRICS*
I don't really understand what she means with that about love being emptiness. Because I thought that hunger was related to sexual desire but then she started to talk about love in drugs and love in the stage and I get that the meaning is deeper than that, but I still don't understand what does she mean with "I thought love was some kind of emptiness". Emptiness because you don't find somebody? or because you don't love you? Like if she was seeking for love and that was her hunger?
Its all metaphoric, What it means to you might mean something else to another. Think of it like Seal's lyrics, all very subjective

Same feeling with Lungs... Flo is just brlilliant!

When I see her dancing, my eyes fill with tears. The way she dances is simply beautiful, free, powerful and above all abysmally honest. Florence transforms emotion into motion like nobody else.

5 years on and this is still my favourite song ever. Thank you.

I love her, her songs are so soulful! Such a beautiful song.
I've been listening to this every day at least 14 times. When I'm home alone, I play it full blast and just freely dance in my room with no care in the world. Even though the world is a tough and unkind place.

Hey you might like a band called The Doublejumps if you like Florence + The Machine

Jesus
What this means?
Luke Official it's like you know someone and in your mind you just assume that death will never touch them because it can't be possible to lose someone that beautiful or someone that important.
This video is obviously about Jesus the Christ. “Death, where is your sting?” Jesus conquered death by “using his body” to be the ultimate sacrifice atoning for all mankind’s sins. Jesus tells us not worry.
I'm here just to say how beautiful and strong this woman is facing her struggles with such grace. That inspires me every single day!!! Thank you Florence!!!

Ever since I first heard Dog Days, I was in complete love. Florence’s music touches me in a way I don’t know how to explain. It’s like her songs are a soul, and a book, they’re poetry and they remind me of the most wonderful things of life. And it's friday night and it's kicking in
And I can't trust, they're gonna crucify me
Oh, you and all your vibrant youths
How could anything bad ever happen to you?
You make a fool of death with your beauty, and for a moment

But the more I took, the more it took away
And I could never get enough
I thought that love was on the stage
You give yourself to strangers, you don't have to be afraid
Then it tries to find a home with people, oh, and I'm alone
Picking it apart and staring at your phone

Come on and work it for me
Don't let them get you down
You're the best thing I've seen
We never found the answer
But we knew one thing
[Chorus]
We all have a hunger
(We all have a hunger)
We all have a hunger
(We all have a hunger)
We all have a hunger
(We all have a hunger)
We all have a hunger
(We all have a hunger)
[Post-Chorus]
And it's Friday night and it's kicking in
In that pink dress, they're gonna crucify me
Oh and you in all your vibrant youth
How could anything bad ever happen to you?
You make a fool of death with your beauty
And for a moment
[Verse 2]
I thought that love was in the drugs
But the more I took, the more it took away
And I could never get enough
I thought that love was on the stage, give yourself to strangers
You don't have to be afraid
Then it tries to find a home
With people or when I'm alone
Picking it apart
And staring at your phone
[Chorus]
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
[Pre-Chorus]
Tell me what you need
Oh, you look so free
The way you use your body, baby
Come on and work it for me
Don't let them get you down
You're the best thing I've seen
We never found the answer
But we knew one thing
[Chorus]
We all have a hunger
(We all have a hunger)
We all have a hunger
(We all have a hunger)
We all have a hunger
(We all have a hunger)
We all have a hunger
(We all have a hunger)
[Post-Chorus]
And it's Friday night and it's kicking in
In that pink dress, they're gonna crucify me
Oh and you in all your vibrant youth
How could anything bad ever happen to you?
You make a fool of death with your beauty
And for a moment I forget to worry
Super 👍👍👍

Me too ♡
They're just too good !
