I pride myself in having a pretty eclectic taste in music, and I can say that I like pretty much all genres…
    Expect one.
I do NOT like death metal music. I don’t like how aggressive and angry it is. It hurts my ears.
    But I’m setting myself a challenge…
To try and see if Death Metal can sound beautiful when played on the piano.

I find classical music and metal music have a lot of common. They're both intricate in their structure, they're both very dramatic, and they both require high proficiency with instrumentation.

I would say that your comments definitely don't apply to ALL metal bands. However, they definitely apply to nearly all of my favorites. I tend to prefer European metal bands. Especially those from the Scandinavian region precisely because of the tendency for strong classical elements. Great comment!

You know what the thing about metal is? Once you are used to the high intensity and the distortion (scream vocals are basically distorted vocals), you'll hear the same beauty in the songs that other people may only hear in such piano versions. To people not used to it, the loudness and distortion is distracting from the actual musical elements at first. Thats the whole reason of the "is this music?" attitude.

  • @koenighaunstetten

Pieter Rossouw or symphonic metal, and some folk metal is much less heavy.
Also there are also quite a few classical pieces that are quite similar to metal. like for example the iron foundry by Mosolov
Still quite funny how non metal fans always react the same way.

Man...in the late 80s early 90s before I was an angry teen. I used to ride my bmx bike across my quiet town and down a dirt farm road to an old house where a very old lady would give piano lessons, 50c for half an hour, I remember getting good enough and looking forward to playing along side her.
Fast forward now and I need music like the metal you featured here to be able to sleep some nights, it screams for me (alot of stuff going on in my brain) but no matter what, piano will always bring tears to my eyes and takes me back to that old house playing as a kid. My fingers move along with it. This was a fun video. I still have my very first Yamaha keyboard and all my books from that time.

Hi Lisa, I thought that was absolutely amazing! I’m 50 years old and I have to say I have never seen anything quite like that! I’ve been playing heavy metal guitar for 35 years and I have just discovered the beauty of the piano. To answer your question why anyone would want to listen to, or play that kind of music; For most of us it’s an outlet from less desirable situations we had to endure as children, and it’s an excellent way for us to release our anger, whether you’re the one on stage or the one in the mosh pit. Anyway, there’s a song by Joe Satriani called Always With Me, Always With You. I think this is a song that you will greatly appreciate. I am able to play this song on the guitar but not on the keyboard, I’ve tried but to no avail. You will need a keyboard with a note bender, but I believe in my heart of hearts that you’ll be able to pull it off. I really hope you give it a try because I know it will be quite challenging. Thank you for your page and all your free lessons, you are really helping me how to learn to play the piano.

Aight, I'm 2:30 in and I heard you say you can't understand why people like it. That's totally cool. I mean pop, country, rap, djent, ,reggae, etc isn't for everyone. It is appreciated that people take the time to just listen. That's what music is, it's a form of art. Some will like it, others won't. I will edit this when I watch more (hopefully all of it, I am a bit drunk so bare with me).
Edit; I'm back at your piano cover. It was indeed beautiful. You sorted out the distinctive sounds perfect and transcribed them well. I never have any doubts with channels like this but I just wanted to say you earned a subscribe. I can't wait to see more

Metal and classical go hand in hand regarding instruments. Listen to the vocals, many are equivalent to that of opera. Metal cannot be enjoyed the same as listening to pop and such. Guitar solos, drum solos, piano solos, etc., exist for momentary enjoyment of that instrument. Vocals are the same. The octave ranges of the vocalist, along with the pure raw emotion, is astounding. From the mind of a metal head, it goes as such:
" Man that drummer can gravity blast 😦! And oh my God the guitarist is making his guitar sing!! Did you HEAR how he shredded that!? WAIT WAIT WAIT here comes the break down." ( Drums slow down, guitarist chugs power chords, bassist in harmony with drums and as it gets slower and slower increasing anticipation, prepare for awesome because here it comes.... Vocalist kicks in "EEEEEEE ooooohhhhh", bassist drops that bass, sick gallops on the drums, insane guitar rift.)
" 🤘😜 MAN THIS BAND IS IIIINNNNNSSSSAAAAANNNNNE! How do they play like that 😳?"
Basically you don't listen to metal to dance and groove to. Its an appreciation of the humans and their instruments that makes simple humans like me bang my mf head in appreciation for that talent because clapping just wont do...and it's THE BEST release of emotions. Metal really can be and is beautiful.

    2. Sinister Frost - Vicar Of God Of The Death (Death Metal) Piano Intro/Melody
    3. Divinity - Embrace the Uncertain (Technical Metal) Beautiful Piano Intro very melodic
    4. Insomnium - In the Groves of Death (Melodic Death Metal) Ambient Soundscapes, Guitar Melody
    5. Agalloch - Black Lake Nidstang (Melodic Death Metal) Ambient Soundscapes, Guitar Solo intro and Timpani
    6. Quo Vadis - Dream (Death Metal) Ambient, Beautiful Guitar

To understand metal music you have to dive deeper into it: understand the lyrics and emotions that they bring. Think about listening to it like it's a way to let your negative emotions out. There were a lot of studies which show, that people listening to metal music are on average happier than other people.

But one band I want to bring out; Death.
Their earlier works (first 3 albums) really are masterpieces of their genre and style. Later works from Human and onwards (arguably) introduced a new style of death metal to the world.
Just put on their swansong 'The Sound of Perseverance' and you'll hear what I mean.

Why does music always have to be "beautiful and lovely"? Open your mind and ears just a little.

Sounds Like Metalcore (Metallic hardcore) and crossover thrash
Traditional death metal include: morbid angel
    Deathcore: Suicide silence
    Tech death: Neceophagist

I'd call that more Metalcore or Deathcore more than Death Metal, but that's just me. I'm not a fan of that either although at one time I was. However, If you want to hear "beautiful", which I heard none of in your coworkers examples you need to listen to:
Clouds (official) - Durere (Funeral Doom)
Swallow the Sun - When a Shadow is Forced into the Light (Gothic Doom)
Trees of Eternity - Hour of the Nightingale (Melancholic Doom)
I'm 49 and I grew up on metal and played in a metal band 20yrs ago. My tastes have changed a bit over the years and I really prefer anything that's under 100 bpm. I just love the more emotional, slower, more ambient music that can "breathe" a bit more than screamcore, grindcore or death metal.

Hey Lisa could u make a video for early intermediate self taught players who form a major part in the piano community but are highly neglected? Just like tips on what they should start with how to improve how they could start improvising. (emphasis on EARLY INTERMEDIATE SELF TAUGHT). THANK U IN ADVANCE 😀 also thank u for being one of the best piano channel on UA-cam 😎

    I love this idea Lisa!
I too thought for years metal was not for me, then my friends showed me "Power Metal" which has over-the-top lyrics, with catchy swelling choruses. Death Metal still I'm a bit shaky on as I like easier to hear lyrics, but after listening to the full "Erase Me" song you chose, it was pretty nice :).
Some of my favorite videos of yours are your quick and easy to accomplished song tutorials. I'd LOVE to have you give a "how to play" tutorial on a Power Metal song, they would likely be easier to dissect then this more challenging one.
Possible suggestions of Power Metal songs from my small pool:
    -Slower emotional Metal Ballads
-Hammerfall - Glory to the Brave
-Iced Earth - Watching Over Me
    -Great catchy melodic choruses
-Dragonforce - Through the Fire and the Flames
-Iced Earth - A Charge to Keep
    -Hammerfall - Last Man Standing

Pro Tip: ease your way into this genre by listening to Vengeance Rising...
Also, going topless is always a great image for a death metal look... JK.
On a more serious note, check out some of the retro Christian "death" metal bands like VR and Mortification. The lyrics are a little more wholesome...
Love your stuff. You've taught me so much. Thank you.

She needs to check out Periphery. The piano/keyboard/pad is amazing. I think Jake Bowen (1 of the 3 guitar players) writes and records the parts. There are a lot of Metal bands that have awesome piano/keyboard parts.

If you just drop the drums from "Erase Me", I'd bet you find it a lot more tolerable. For a long time, I said I liked all genres except two, Death Metal and Freeform Jazz. But I managed to find enough recommendations that I found one or two I could listen to, and then used Spotify and Pandora to suggest similar.
I have yet to do so for Freeform Jazz. Recommendations are welcome.

Dude, there was almost no death metal. Entombed was literally the only death metal band you heard. Try Cannibal Corpse, Necrophagist, Death, Deicide, Infant Annihilator(I don’t see them as deathcore), Abominable Putridity, Visceral Disgorge, Decrepit Birth… I could go on for days. It’s pretty incredible music once you understand it.

For me, screaming death metal is the rap music of the metal genre. I hate it. But I love everything about this. This was inspiring and beautiful and I wish you'd done it for the whole song. You are intimidating and amazing and I appreciate all you do and try to teach us.

Facundo Gotmand Not sure how this random internet stranger's oppinion hit such a nerve, but yes I do know that. Hense my use of the word screaming. I love metal. I just really dislike screaming, growling or grunting lyrics. They do not appeal to me which is why I appreciated this video.
