“Don’t let them suffer” that little bit of solace got me through this scene.
That, and the fact that he doesn't make the new guy do the puppies. Instead he does it himself. He wanted to minimize the psychological blow on the kid as much as possible. What a horrible job to have to do, even though it was necessary.
That’s why fuk soviet Russia
@@apinkelaphant So they should all the animals with radiation on their skins let escape from the zone? In the long term, that would probably even cost more human lives
In real life that soldier shot that army creep when the army creep threatened him he turned away and the soldier had 5 seconds to shoot him and he did to save that dog then him and the other soldier covered it up they told the officer that a sniper shot the army creep and they got away with it in the confusion during Chernobyl that army creep was shot by the soldier and the dog ran away great!

what Vietnam? You think Soviet Russia was a good idea. Totalitarian society’s are always awesome!!
I love how the soldiers don't look down on the kid for being upset about killing the dog, and gives him solace by sharing their own stories. There's a lot of compassion in the scene that I think is subtle if you aren't looking for it.
Thought i don't get why a soldier could't shoot a dog. Like putting down your own pets is way harder since its all medication and stuff and you feel guilty because you made other people do it.
@@boisol81 I think any human being should feel remorse killing something if said something is not trying to hurt you and you are not planning to eat/use it. After all, they we're innocent pets.
The kid was not a soldier he was a volunteer, and never killed anyone. The other 2 men were soldiers and instead of bullying this kid they tried to comfort him because they were human.
I agree, this is a great scene, very complex actually
Agreed, most films or shows the other soldiers would just be like “be a fuckin man” and “deal with it”, but they were empathetic instead.
Just think, they’re saving them from a much more painful death

Diana Mother of Cats Is his rank commander? It seems more of like a rank a little above private or conscript.
This was done to not only save the animals from dying a horrible death from the radiation but also to keep the survivors from passing on possible genetic mutations.
Well they failed. A lot of those former pets survived and their descendants still live in the area to this day.
loner1878 supposedly they didn‘t even do the pet killing thing in reality, just animals in the wild.
It has nothing to do with this at all. It has everything to do with food chain concentration and then that super concentration animal decomposing where ever and then severely poisoning the earth even more. Thats why they are buried in concrete so the radioactive elements can't escape before the decompose themselves.
@@loner1878 They're gonna die soon as they're currently dredging the pr'pyat river.
I'm saying, it depends on how much they've absorbed in the incident, and most of them reproduced which is the reason why there are still dogs in Pr'pyat. They tried killing all of the animals since they absorbed some radiation and can pass it to their future family tree with deformities, they also thought they won't feel pain from the illnesses they got from the incident, so yeah they killed them
Not gonna lie. That litter of puppies would have broken him a bit and I think the commander knew that when he asked the youngster to go outside.
@C-shift Report He's already broken, just been reforged with both the flames of war and experience, harder and stronger but less humane as a result.

Its in the past, cant change the past. Better to learn and ensure it doesn't repeat.
Unfortunately it was necessary. Some of the pets would die from radiation, but dogs can actually tolerate a lot more than humans can. The animals had to be destroyed because they were radioactive, and they couldn't risk those animals coming into contact with people (not to mention other animals). They're contaminated and always will be.
Why didn’t they let the people leave w their pets tho
@@nick1834 they need to quickly evacuate so they can’t brought their pet with inside the soviet transport trucks
@@annehaight9963 and also they could reproduce, which would increase the radioactive animal and be born with disabilities and genetic afflictions.
There is a misconception in a lot of comments here: The animals weren't shot because otherwise they would have suffered from radiation sickness. They were shot in order to prevent them spreading radioactive contamination. Keep in mind that acute radiation syndrome was only relevant to those being in really close proximity to the reactor. However, those animals where no where near it.
They stood no chance, the radiation killed all the vegetation in the area. The animals one way or another would have absorbed fatal doses too. Shooting them as awful as it was, was less so than leaving them to die horribly over days or weeks.
You have tons of radioactive dust blowing allover the place (not only). Last thing you need is carriers.
Not to mention that all the people standing on the bridge of death (2 km away from the station) all died, so proximity isn't a criteria since you can't convince an animal to hose itself down. The corpses are radioactive too.
Fur carries tons of dust too
@@DeltaPi314 everything in like a 50-100km zone was very radioactive so the animals who were in the zone could spread out and carry it to more parts of ukraine or belarus

To have left them behind was the worst. To me, it would be more merciful to inject people who absorbed multiple times the lethal dose of radiation with a fatal dose of narcotics or barbiturates so they can expire without further pain. Death from radiation poisoning is agonizing, and it can take weeks to kill as internal organs and tissues go necrotic.

Cats don't make a noise and start doing huge back flips, probably 6 or so, nearly 2 meters high and then just drop down dead after the last one. You wouldn't actually believe it until you've seen it. Firing a decent rifle like the Mosin Nagants they were using would damn near deafen you inside a house.
omg thats just animals! You pussies
I just realized, there is like no recoil when they fired their rifles lol A live round from a Mosin kicks like a mule.
Blank rounds. Commonly used by studios to simulate gun recoil. Also killed Brandon Lee.
It's for safety:
Can't give em' what *would* give a sudden recoil and can't risk telling em' to simply jerk the gun as they fire the blank, since they could still be injured from the burst of pressure.
I was thinking that exact same thing. A 7.62x54R round gives considerable recoil, similar to a .308, .303 British, or a 30-06.
Nah their just strong asf

What stuck out to me was how little dialogue was given to Pavel (played by Barry Keoghan). It feels like he spoke no more than 5 sentences in the entire series, yet he's the central character in the pet liquidators plotline, and the supporting cast of his comrades each spoke more than he did. But his non-verbal acting was so well done and sealed his perspective as the central perspective for this plotline.
Gotta love them dragging out the century-old Mosins instead of using AKs.
why would they use a ak-47 they are hunting not gunning down people makes no sense not to use a hunting rifle or just a typical rifle in general would you wanna go rambo on a doggo
Chubby surprise The point is . The Mosin Nagant fires a high powered (7.62x54r)cartridge similar to a U.S. 30-06. Certainly is overkill for putting down dogs. The AK-74 was the current Soviet issue rifle at the time . (Much smaller 5.45x39 cartridge). Not the AK-47. A few Makarov pistols would of got the job done. I can’t imagine firing a Mosin indoors with no hearing protection.
This was the USSR ... in the mid 1980s. In much less than a decade, the USSR was splitting apart, due in large part to economic factors. I suspect they gave the men whatever cheap arms were available for which they had equally cheap ammunition. After all, they were only killing pets and livestock.
@@sksjustice7693 Hunting with a pistol? I'm no expert but I imagine that would be pretty dificult. They were not justing hunting dogs but also deers or wild boars, how do you wanna take down these animals from long range with a pistol?
@@al-dk9xd the mosin is definitely not a more accurate weapon. While yes the average bolt action is more accurate than the average semi auto the mosin was manufactured to a lower standard than the draganov. The barrel of the mosin was mass manufactured in the tens of millions by multiple armories and the sights are not adjustable in the field. Also the usual 54r round (silvertip) is not the one used (for snipers) in the draganov.
Don't get me wrong my favorite gun is a mosin 91/30 manufactured 1943 at the tula arsenal. Long gun; with the bayonet it's taller than I am. Came with the original grease tin and carrying pouch. But as for accuracy, even on benchrest, it is the one of the worst.
For some reason, the last part of this scene with all the dead animals in the truck and the mass grave was what really got to me. All those poor animals who didn't have the ability to understand why all the humans abruptly left them one day...and then another day, strangers came with guns and shot them. The hunters were doing what needed to be done, and they were doing it in order to prevent the animals from suffering as well to prevent more people from dying but...the animals couldn't understand this. They had relied on humans to take care of them but then the humans abandoned them -- and then when the humans came back and the animals might have thought they would have people to take care of them again, the humans killed them.
Its crazy how people dont bat an eye at humans dying but whenever its an animal its completely different. The idea of something innocent and helpless being killed is probably what makes it so bad
You nailed it! Because we feel they are innocent and in a sense helpless.
I never really understood that about people.
What makes dogs more important than cats, horses, or other domesticated animals that show emotions towards us?

That Captain is a good man I would fight along side of him in a war.
I was wondering - what did they do with birds ?
How did they deal with them ?
And with fish from rivers ?
You asked a very good question. Now I wonder myself.
They couldn't really do much with birds and fish that acute radiation poisoning didn't do already. So, into the food chain they went.
Ask the peoples in other countries that got cancers never heard of before. :/
they could not do anything about the birds. as for the fish they drained the lakes and the fish died - the ones in the rivers some where only partially liquidated - some were killed by stetting huge nets but that did not catch all of them.
Most of the bird population in the area all died out from the radiation in the air... The ones that we see today are actually just newer additions unlike the dogs or cats that still roam the area.
I love the young soldier's doubt when he's about to shoot the first dog. He first out of compassion tells the dog to run away, so he wouldn't have to shoot them, out of curiosity he shoots the dog, then he comes closer to the dog, and together comes the realization of what the rifle round did to the poor creature.
I doubt it was curiosity, more like surprise/stress, perhaps? He only shot when the dog barked at him after his failed attempt to get it to run away.

@@mr.techaky7655 I suppose they will sometimes gas animals used for testing, which is awful in itself. But for overcrowding, yes, they use the needle like with pets who are sick and old and miserable. @@viejaspeliculasfilipinas3621 they would slowly and painfully from the radiation, so they did them a favor
@@midge3428 oh god, I didn't mentioned that
But it's really awful killing animals
@@viejaspeliculasfilipinas3621 yeah i bet it is, but its for their own good
What's sad about mercy killing those dogs and even puppies was that some greedy lying humans caused all of this shit... All those animals were innocent. Lies killed the puppies.
Not lies but unreliable reactors and incompetent workers
VASSILI FIRE YOURWEAPON
LOL Comrade
Cod 2 reference?
meh Child 44 movie reference, Fares Fares is in that movie just like in Chernobyl HBO
Lol
This is the episode that I most reluctant to revisit
This was very humane. I know it seems barbaric but if I was dying horrible from radiation poison then I hope somebody would put me out quickly
This show hit so many fucking spots.
Making the incident straight up terrifying, seeing the children kick the radioactive dust like snow, liquidation of animals and nuclear waste, the whole stark atmosphere of a populated place suddenly being empty, because of something you can't see. I know that there's a lot of historical inaccuracies in this show, the director himself has said the show is not a documentary and parts of the story were intentionally dramatized for the sake of the show. And none of that takes away from the fact that Chernobyl is one of the best miniseries ever done, in my opinion.
This was one of the hardest scenes for me to watch.
I just knew before this "liquidation" was over they were going to have someone walk in on a group of puppies.
Sometimes doing the right thing requires evil acts. Cause what harm you must, as quickly and efficiently as possible, but never more or less than what is needed.
In the podcast they revealed that they were gonna do a scene where one of the puppy's were still alive, but they had to continue pouring concrete because they didn't have more ammo left.
Narly..
That was a great acting moment at 2:33, so many words said with simple facial expressions. You could tell he was pissed and considered punching the kid, but something inside him told him at the last minute "he didn't hesitate out of sadistic pleasure for the animal's suffering, he hesitated because this isn't the kind of person he is".
I think you read too much into that. he explained later that he knew exactly what the kid was going through, his anger was clearly directed at the situation in general, the frustration of trying to get the kid to do what must be done with the understanding that it was only natural for the situation to play out the way it did. I seriously doubt that the show was implying he was angered specifically at the boy.
I guess in hindsight this was one of the easier jobs around the whole liquidation process
At least they gave them all rifles this time.
They actually used hunters to put down irradiated animals and they didn't go from door to door killing every animal they see that is a bit of exaggeration. Soldiers were mainly used to ward off marauders. A relative of my friend was 18 when he was sent there and they were given orders to shoot marauders if necessary and he got in quite some trouble when he said that we won't shoot a man bc he was terrified.
And i mean even in the scene shooting animals isnt that bad. We eat animals all the time. I think i would have asked for as Pistol because after a botched rifle shot its more humane,.
Its still a good example of what they did to keep the ussr safe.
Poor Druig has to go through so much
It's sad how docile they are.
Like.... "Look ,a human ,he's friendly ,yeay!" but ... u know the rest.
The Fact that Many animals survived and thrived in the exposed area. Says a lot
Not a lot. Probably more like birds but i think the dogs and so on got killed by like 80%
I was able to accept and understand the killing of the pets. And so to the dogs it’s horrifying.
But then I saw the cat...
6:17 Happiness might be cool, but have you ever tried a dump truck of dead radioactive puppies?
Oh, my gosh! I had the same radio reciever, which Pavel holds in his hands during song playing))))).
Had?! I still have one !
I would've been crying too much. My eyes are tearing up at this. Poor puppies and kitties were left to die. People should've been allowed to bring their pets with them.
They were concerned about the radiation in the fur of the animals
I didn't think I would ever go through that scene. I'm in tears.....
Thanks a lot for videos
5:29 how the mother was smilling on seeing them made the scene more worse.
I see already this serie to win a lot of prizes
The saddest story I heard told by some of that squad is that when they were burying the dogs one of puppies appeared to be alive and tried to crawl back from the pit and they didn’t have ammo left to put him down so they just swamped him as well. :(
BTW, the officer in this scene is the same guy who plays Leo in the game A Way Out
But if you think about that can you imagine how hard it was for that kid for the rest of his life, can you imagine having to live with that for the rest of your life , knowing that you killed man's best friend?
If this is true. I kinda pity those dogs who had to be killed. It feels wrong but in a radiated place it hurts more to do whats right.
It is true but these pet still be alive but no touchy
They are called Chernobyl dogs but I call them danger woofs.
sniff sniff forbidden doggos
the scene with the puppies and the scene with lyudmilla at the ending sitting in shock after her baby died. episode 4 is the saddest and dark episode of the series.
actully the animals did in fact suffer from radiation sickness one liquidator said a dog was dying from radiation sickness. she was going to put it down, but it died before she could kill it the dog died a horrible death, and she couldn't. help it!
That burial scene hit me hard
The pet burial ,Truly one of the most disturbing moments, from the really disturbing terrifying scenes in this HBO mini series Chernobyl'
I like how he explains to him that's there no shame in it. But also let's him know that he had it all along in him.
Even talks about his first time and how he went through. So he knows what that young kid is feeling like.
3:04 to 4:00
Love the little detail of them using old surplus Nagants for non-war and non-guard duty.
Truly one of the roughest moments of this ......unspeakable I am...
Ok yoda
This scene is much more true to life than the supposed "Cull"...
There was little that came from Chernobyl of positive benefit, but this at least shows that there was still humanity weaved within...
I lost it after the quick glimpse of the cat and the puppies
This series didn't really sugarcoat anything or pull any punches. It's brutal and hard to watch and comprehend, but it was the reality of the thing
Great series, definitely a tough scene to watch if your a dog lover. Understood why they had to do it, hurt the heart to watch. Masterfully done.
From 6:07 to the end, I would like to know what the man with the husky voice is singing. is it russian or ukrainian? It looks like a sad ballad. Does anybody know the name of that song??
This is Black Raven ua-cam.com/video/q0wIfloHu14/v-deo.html
