    I had loved the score of "Follies" ever since the show premiered in 1971; but I had never seen it in performance until I went to the Kennedy Center in 2011 to see this production. WHAT an experience! This videotape cannot begin to convey the electric excitement that filled the theater. I've never been so thankful in my life that I had opera glasses with me than when Linda Lavin sang "Broadway Baby". Her face was a theater in itself: a battered, been-around-the-block veteran crying out her joy in life and defiance of death. Magnificent! When the lights came up at intermission, the very attractive middle-aged lady sitting on my right tapped my arm and smiled. "You really seem to be into this", she said. "I like seeing other people enjoy things when I'm enjoying them too." We chatted for a few minutes, and I commented "I drove down here from York, Pennsylvania, just to see this." She laughed and said "I've got you beat. I flew in from Denver."

      Pat Fenaughty She is my absolute favorite but this was not the role for her, certainly not at the time she played it. Victoria Clark, who took over the role when the rest of the revival cast played in Los Angeles at the Ahmanson, was better suited for it and wonderful.

      I mean...did they really have to name both the leading men with 'B' names? 25 other options, and this isn't a musical based on pre-existing material...the more I think about that decision, the weirder I think it is...

    Because of the songs, I often come back to this Sondheim show as a favorite. Even the cast off songs are lovely. I wasn't able to see the original but was pleased to see this production was very close to it in production. Thin as it is in plot, it is overflowing in emotion and drama if played to its potential. Dark and depressing, bright and beautiful, a glory of manic human thoughts, hope, dreams, creativity, crashes and resolution.
    Thanks Bruno! A treasure to watch.

    I saw this version twice on Broadway. It was much better than you can tell from watching this, which is valuable as the only complete filming of "Follies" I know of, but doesn't do justice to the production. Theatricality and illusion are the essence of "Follies" and a hand-held unedited home camera just can't give you that feeling. Bernadette Peters is miscast in this, but she was better live than she comes across in this filming, where her performance is sometimes painful to watch. Incidentally, I also saw the original Broadway production and the Paper Mill Playhouse production about 15 years ago. I think the Paper Mill production was my favorite. Thank you, Bruno, for uploading this. Any "Follies" is better than none. . . .

    This is hands down the darkest, and bleakest of all Sondheim's shows, much darker and grimmer than Sweeney Todd or Assassins, because it has no real ending. Sweeney Todd and Assassins are dark, but they have a clear resolution. In Follies nothing is resolved, everything we've just seen is left hanging like a suspenseful musical sting that never dies out.

    This is a near perfect production of a problematic piece. Don't all of of Sondheim's musicals come with built in problems, much as I love them? I saw the original production both pre broadway in Boston and on Broadway. Now memory can play funny tricks, but Prince's realization had a mysterioso quality that probably can never be duplicated, much of it coming from casting performers with no stage legs. Those that had some sort of stage career behind them, well it was so long ago that it mattered little and the rest had been in the movies, very different from being on stage. That added a quality of can they even get through the material with any kind of poise and there were very different answers for different performers. Yvonne DiCarlo pretty much never got all the lyrics right at any one performance, Alexis Smith, Tony award be damned got though by sheer force of energy. Dorothy Collins was the only one really giving a reliable performance, years of experience honed on summer stock stages and she should have gotten the Tony. Here we have exactly the opposite situation, a cast with enough stage experience to light up Broadway without any electricity. Less of that cob webby feeling of being in a theater with ghosts all through it, but with principals able to make the 4 lead characters a touch sympathetic where in almost all other performances that doesn't happen for me. Bernadette Peters has the misfortune to play a role played to complete and utter perfection by one of the greatest singers ever to sing a Broadway type repertory, Ms. Barbara Cook. Were it not for her assumption in the Follies in Concert version, even minus much of the dialogue, Bernadette would be the Sally for the ages, so lets let her share it. She was sensational, one of her greatest Broadway roles. Jan Maxwell leaves every other Phyllis in the dust. Danny Burstein finally assumed the mantle of a star with this part, perfectly cast and Ron Raines shares honors with Follies in Concert's George Hearne, no mean feat since he and Cook were that casts standouts among a stageful of brilliant performers. Everyone in this cast gives lessons on how to make this show work, its briliantly directed as well. Thanks for posting because before this I only knew it from the excellent PS Classics recording. By the way, up until now I could never stand the show, hating all 4 central characters. As for the Royal Theater Production that showed in the movies and everyone raved about, in my opinion, it couldn't come close to this one for heart and soul. BRAVO!!!!!

      I saw this in the original production. it had a mysterious quality, and the fact that the showgirls were so gorgeous and the old folks so dated was a good contrast between dreams and reality. The ending however came too fast to feel like it really wrapped things up. Now I know, when I see the show, to really pay attention to the very ending past Live Laugh Love. It does wrap things up, but it goes by fast.

    Oh dear! At 15.50 the actress playing Phyllis makes a rather embarrassing gaff- she confuses the names of her and Sally's husbands-, saying to Sally " You married Ben, didn't you?" She means Buddy, of course. Of all the names to get mixed up!- because the whole plot ( and it's not much of one, as we all know) is that Sally WISHES she had married Phyllis's husband, Ben. You can see Bernadette Peters thinking for a a few seconds- 'Uh oh, how do we get out of this?' before they sort of act their way out of the moment- "No, YOU married Ben!! Hahaha" etc- which is all you can do in those situations onstage.

    Sorry Guys! Having seen both the 1971 FOLLIES and the 2011 revival, Bernadette Peters did not have the edge that Dorothy Collins had, and Jan Maxwell surpassed Alexis Smith.

    Good lord that overture is being played at methamphetamine tempo...you can hear the pianist and saxes can barely keep up at a couple of points.

    Not my favorite Sondheim, not by a long shot. A few really good moments, but overall a bit dull. And there were a few points that I felt like I was watching a local theater company performance. Set, costumes, lighting were great though.

    The opening sequence is not good (in so many ways). Instead of bursting with energy, it relies entirely on the music (bad idea); but. there's no movement, no choreography - maybe they didn't have the original 1971 videos to work from--they should have! Peter's interpretation of Sally has no power or strength. What happened with that? Michael, you're right, Schaefer should've been slapped! I can't watch the rest.

    I swear.. if British audiences adopt the dreadful practice of clapping an actor just for appearing on stage.. I will write a serious letter of complaint .. erm to someone... It happened in 'Dreamgirls' when Amber Riley simply walked on stage.. PLEASE PLEASE not in England!!!

      That’s hardly a new thing...and it’s definitely not a strictly “American” thing. Get over yourself and let people enjoy the show 🙄

    Choreography is horrendous. Michael Bennett was god...This guy...not so much.

    That's so naff. Clapping an actor when they first appear on stage. It should be about the character not coming to see the actor - it completely removes the audience from the drama

    • @Moiturette
      @Moiturette 9 років тому +22

      You're wrong. It's not naff. Applauding certain well-known actors when they first appear has been commonplace for decades. How long have you been on the Planet?

      Moiturette
      I imagine Jason is from the U.K. Because we don't applaud an actor just because they walk onto the stage. Because it is indeed very naff.

    • @versboy3973
      @versboy3973 9 років тому +6

      first what is NAFF? Not a word used in USA. what country is it from?
      second you have used this comment before on other posts, it didnt fly there either, because -
      third, ppl have been giving enterance applause for decades. DECADES. it is a PART of the live audience tradition, to show appreciation for a favorite star. Get over it. It's not going away.

    • @Moiturette
      @Moiturette 9 років тому +4

      Vers Boy Absolutely true and correct. By the way, naf, or naff, is not a real word. It's just a made-up slang word which is rarely used, anywhere.

      ***** Not true. It does happen in theaters, and for much longer than the 1980s. I can remember it happening in the early 1960s, when I was a child, in a production of Noel Coward's SAIL AWAY, in Sydney.
