unbelievable that you don't hear the pitch variations at 5:46, no front

And I heard it afterwards, it wasn't that pronounced. my whole track has it already anyway.

Usefull info! I've checked Ik multimedia tape machines using your method and there were no lower harmonics, looks like they have antialiasing in their plugins.

      @GrumpyEyeAudio  8 місяців тому +1

Some of them have integrated oversampling, and you don't even know that it's there. The only way to figure it out is to check your cpu usage... if it's a "heavier" vst, then it's probably oversampling.. or it's badly optimized lol

@@GrumpyEyeAudio I have uad signature bundle but after watching your videos, I was surprised that such a famous company like UAD, whose plugins are praised by many producers, did not provide oversampling

I only have the ozone vintage tape plugin and the softube tape vst which I like for its wobbly effect section. It's about 50€ I think.
Have testet it with your method and did not find any popping up frequencies below the fundamental. It's tape effect is very subtle but the wobble can be adjusted really nice

I am so jealous right now😂
Maybe you want to check it out. They say it's good😁 I bought it back then but can't say if it's close to the original.
You could react to the tutorial on their product page.. it's pretty detailed and they even gain matched the dry and wet signal, so no smoke and mirrors😉
Not sure if there is a demo version.

I don’t understand the harmonics test. Isn’t the whole point of saturation to generate harmonics? Is the problem that it should only generate higher harmonics?
edit: I watched your other video on saturation. It's super interesting. I had never considered the samplerate to be an issue with numbers as big as 44.1Khz, but I never considered that saturation plugins were creating frequencies beyond 22KHz. It's surprising that this is an issue, when the obvious solution would be to have the plugin sharply low-pass all harmonics it generates beyond hearing range. I assume there is a reason they don't do this, and instead favor supersampling (when they do). It's really interesting to know about either way. Thanks for the cool videos!
ps: The Verve plugin reacts to input gain a lot. Your track was going a bit loud for its most distorting settings (like Fire). If you turned your track down, you have a much more palatable sound. I do understand that they could have given you an input attenuator however. Especially at that price.

Sharp (or any) filtering produces phase issues. They would be apparent in parallel mode. That's why you need oversampling :)

Love this! Also dig the song and your voice :).
I saw the other video about saturation, and I did have some thoughts, maybe just to open up a deeper conversation.
Does analogue gear really introduce no folding at all? Or could it just be way less? Any chance you can test and show this? And when would folding become a problem, as long as it's lower in volume than the fundamental it shouldn't matter all that much right? Isn't it exactly the same as with the harmonics above the fundamental?
And if then this is problem, isn't there a practical fix to keep this phenomenon in check (aside from the 80 dollar plugin you mention)? Couldn't one just like add a low/high pass filter in your chain before or after this saturation? Wouldn't this be good practice anyway?
    Anyway, good vid!

In laymens terms: analog doesn't split the information into ones and zeros. Foldback happens when the plugin is trying to create more desired harmonics (the ones that sound good) in the higher frequency range, but the resolution of your DAW doesn't allow that. These harmonics are then folded back into the audible spectrum. However, they fold back to frequencies that aren't natural harmonics of the original signal, and thus don't sound good and desirable, like the ones introduced before. Yes, a filter can make things a lot better, but then forget about using it on a Master, or important busses. For coloration in the creative stages, that would be a viable solution. Hope that helps.
