I'm an older, lower-level rider. I won't be doing any shredding or racing in this lifetime! I just like to get out in nature on the trails, and enjoy the scenery and have a little fun on some sections. After finding heavy mountain bikes to be more of a chore than a joy to ride, I bought a high-quality USED carbon XC hardtail race bike, and find it to be perfect for my needs. I'm an in-between height, and my former bikes were medium frames. This one is a small frame, which is easier for me to handle. Perfect adventure bike! It's lightweight, climbs very easily, and can go anywhere my skill set will take it. The only thing I'd change about it is the race tires. Not grippy enough to make me feel as confident as I'd like, so eventually they'll get swapped for something knobbier. I normally hate riding uphill, and when I got this bike it actually made me start to enjoy going uphill. Couldn't have lucked into a more perfect bike! This video just reinforced everything I've been feeling about riding an XC bike.

    • @patrickohalloran8540
      @patrickohalloran8540 Рік тому

@@mircea5013 it requires me to be much more precise when riding. it's a pretty different experience. with the ripley, you can mow through rocks. this is not the bike for that IMO. i go slower on more technical trails. if you enjoy picking lines and thinking more on the trail (in terms of how your body is positioned, how to position your bike, etc) then you'd enjoy the dv9. on smoother trails, this thing FLIES. also climbing is much nicer (even technically) than the ripley. it's so much easier to quickly move this dv9 around to navigate a trail.

@@patrickohalloran8540 Does it feel like a trail or XC bike in terms of position and stack height? Do you feel you have your weight centered, on the back wheel or pushing more on the front wheel?

Thanks in large part to this wonderful, honest review, I bought this DV9 as my first hardtail. I'm a short-armed 5'10" and the Large is ok for me, but feels slightly big. I got used to it. Built it up from a frame with the most idiotic collection of overpriced components and it's astonishing. With carbon wheels, it wants to run up hills. I've just changed to a 203mm rear rotor for extra fun. Astonishing bike. Thanks for a great review and a great channel. Can't wait to get back to Sedona!

I love these chest cam reviews. I watch them not so much for the info on the bike (although I like that too), but for the vicarious experience of being on the trail with you, hearing the gravel under the tires and the rear wheel skipping over steps. And I like how this review really got to talking about the soul of mountain biking, connecting with nature and the love of the sport. Chapeau, as we say in France.

Steve, obviously you have been a long time expert on recommending the best hardtails for a individual based on an in depth analysis and your experience. Your ride review also include your thoughts on HOW to ride a hardtail on hard trails. I really think people should consider what a hardtail is capable of when “surfing” across the rocks and not plowing through the tech.

Great review and comparison to other frames and builds. I would love to switch this frame onto my current build for the sandy/loamy and tight pine barrens trails I ride here on the east coast. A few years ago I was terrified of the thought of riding a carbon frame in the woods. Manufacturing has comes so far.

Great video! I think most people want a "do-it-all" kind of hardtail. Myself included. I would rather have excess travel for those just in case moments, compared to having a lack of travel, which can be dangerous if a bike is pushed too hard. But I totally agree with what you mentioned: "different bikes are built for different purposes." Certain bikes just shouldn't be sent down rock gardens with wild abandon 😅

Do it alls are very versatile, but they lack a bit of the excitement of a purpose built machine. Kind of like a Subaru outback. Fine vehicle, and very versatile. But not as exciting as a jeep off-road or as exciting as a Porsche on the road. Nice in between, but lacking some excitement.

I know a lot of people are interested in running this with a 140mm fork and meaty tires and possibly an Angleset. In my opinion, that would erase all the magic that this bike has going for it. To raise the bb that much, to slacken it out, and to weigh it down would be a mistake in my opinion. If that's the type of thing you're into, I'd recommend a maniak instead, it's far more suited to that.
The magic of this bike is its steeper head angle, its short wheelbase, its low travel and its light weight. I feel like this bike was meant to dance and carve, not plow and shred.

Your riding and your thoughts about different style bikes are very interesting and entertaining. Hats off!
One more thing. I live in central Europe, so totally different terrain, but my experience with the Rekon Race is the same as yours. I get on with it way better than the regular Rekon. CO Springs, CO rider, here. Steve, I bought a DV9 frame off this review. I had a feeling it was going to go that way on your first look, but your description of who it's for in this video fit me to a 'T'. Plan is to build it up to ride a lot of my Green/Blue Front Range trails, including the rides I do from my house that have a lot of "JRA" to get to the good stuff. Also thinking of some in-state rides in Salida, Buena Vista, and Gunnison that would be a riot on this thing. I have family in the Boise, ID area as well, and this bike will absolutely hammer the singletrack in that town. Between it and my Neuhaus Metalworks Solstice 29, I think I have this whole hardtail thing covered for the time being. Psyched!

Update: I’m laughing now because I wrote my comments about half way through the video. Hearing your summary, we’re literally using the same words to describe the DV9. It must be true! :-)
I bought the Spot Rocker based on your review of it, and then I bought the DV9 frame as soon as it was available. I built mine up (size Medium, and i’m just shy of 5’9”) with SRAM AXS stuff, a Fox kashima fork, and a nice light wheelset, and for my style of riding, I lean a bit toward the DV9. They’re both so responsive when you put power down, but the DV9 feels more playful and a little more “chill”, for lack of a better word. The front end is *so* easy to get off the ground if I need it up. Can’t go wrong with either though. My experience perfectly mirrors your comments here.

The geo matches almost identically (same head tube and effective seat angles, with 5mm different chainstay), and it comes with full Deore for similar money to the frame only on the DV9. Aluminum is heavier, but has the advantage of sustainability. Its X-Fusion fork is surprisingly capable, too.

Then, I would instill 1.5* Slack-R headset to get a ~65* HTA. Third, I would ditch the Rekon Race tires and install a 2.6 front Rekon and a 2.6 rear Ikon tire, which is my favorite fast-rolling Trail tire combo. I think that 2.6 tires are ideal for hardtails.

90-95% of what I ride is either up, up and some more up, or just simply slow stuff. That's why I wish I had something more suited for it. Had been looking forward to this review since the first look and it didn’t disappoint. Thanks Steve. Questions:
    (1) I’m curious if your comparison of DV9 and Rocker changes when considering single speed.
    (2) The frame only option is $500 cheaper than the Rocker, which is important when building a bike.
    (3) I’ve noticed the Polygon Syncline has a geometry that fits into this category too. Wondering if you have plans to review it too.

    • @hardtailparty

Unfortunately I haven't been able to get ahold of Polygon. I've reached out MANY times.
Sliding dropouts are nice for SS, but this could be run as with a tensioner.

Just bought one. I can confirm, the dropper/lever is trash. The tube in tube hose routing is also irritatingly noisy. Other than that it’s pretty cool. Not as harsh as I was expecting.
I’m about 5” taller than you and still went with the medium. I ride tight/twisty Midwest single track. I’m not a fan of long/low/slack for what we have here. The large is too long. I wonder why they made such a gap between the medium and large. Something in between would have been perfect.

Awesome video, awesome review. For a roadie that likes to play on the blues and greens, and doesn’t have very much technical mountain bike skill. Would this be a bike for that? Hopefully you can respond when you’re feeling well.
