My mom has this idea that since christians are the majority in the US, then they should be appealed to simply because there's more of them then non-christians. I keep telling her that that was not the reason why this nation was founded. It's not "Freedom for the majority", it's "Freedom for all". The comment that usually stops her in her tracks is: "Would you still support that if you weren't in the majority?"

Thank you for that. I was raised Christian, but have yet to settle on any belief system beyond the cycle of life, as well as natural selection. I have a lot of religious people that I work with ask me if I hate religions because I've turned my back on Christianity, when in fact I agree with you. I respect other religions and why individuals believe in it, but I don't want any part of it and to not have it shoved down my throat. Like Neil deGrasse Tyson said, we need to peacefully coexist.

Been saying this for years, religion and school should not mix. Religion is something you should do in your private life, not on school nor on your work. I am known to hate religion in general, mostly for what it stands for. But that does not mean I attack people for it just because I have a different opinion. Yet those that are religious are very often aggressive towards those that are not, which Neil also makes clear in this video.
I couldn't care less what you are willing to accept as the truth according to your religion, I rather learn the actual truth then fairy tales. Let me put it this way, if a group playing dungeons and dragons (for example) comes to a church and tries to replace your believes with theirs. Wouldn't that offend and put a wrong picture of your world in place? Now that same group goes to a school in your area and tries the same, they teach their BS believes based on that game and not allow the actual truth. Wouldn't that be offensive as well? You go to school to learn the truth so you can benefit from it later in life. Get your papers so you can get a decent job once you leave school. Religion is NOT part of any regular job. Only religious related jobs, nun, pope, or what ever you want to call it, those don't even need it. You can just walk in and say 'hey i want to become a nun/monk' and they will allow you to do so, you will learn the religious part while being there. So religion and schools, no that is definitely not a good thing to have.

Religion and school can mix, if mixed correctly. Here in Finland, we are taught about all the major religions of the world and old mythologies. Religion is it's own class along with mathematics and whatnot. There's no teachers that go around telling kids what they should believe in, we take a look at the history of religion objectively and if someone decides to believe in a certain religion, that's their choice. Of course, it's no surprise that the majority of the students end up being agnostic or atheist, at least back when i was in school.

    • @SIG442

That's basically what happens in the Netherlands as well, yet if you do not believe in a god, you are often trown out of the classroom during that period of time. Which is basically rascism.

In history they only teach about certain people and societies..usually the ones who can kill and conquered the most..usually with an agenda to promote there society that’s doing the teachings ways. If they had a religious class they’d just do the same. Talk about the ones that have the most followers. For example a western school would probably just talk about the abrahamic religions Hinduism and bhuddism. That is unfair as each person has a right to make or have there own religion and views of god. None should get priority over another in terms of what’s talked about on tv public holidays or it might persuade people to join that religion as it’s done in countries like the USA. People shouldn’t decide to believe in god because it’s part of a popular religion. It would just promote or make it seem that god is or can be found in a religion.

I'm a Christian, and I completely agree with Mr. Tyson. Religion should be a private matter, staying the church, synagogue, mosque, etc. Science and Faith should not collide, but peacefully coexist. And I'm tired of people who take their faith to extreme levels and twist it to their own desires. Those kind of people are the ones that make the news and put a bad label on religion as a whole.

that's a HUGE generalization. I happen to be religious and I'm not like that. I want to know everything, but sometimes I do give up in my pursuit, not because I want to feel warm and fuzzy, but let's face it, Science is hard and complex. Everyone should be doing their best to poke their boundaries and expand their knowledge. My point is if religious people don't like science's current hypothesis, then they should try creating one which supports their view or find a place for it in their beliefs.

refers to both the study of modes of reasoning (which are valid and which are fallacious) and the use of valid reasoning. In the latter sense, logic is used in most intellectual activities, including philosophy and science, but in the first sense is studied primarily in the disciplines of philosophy, mathematics, semantics, and computer science. It examines general forms that arguments may take. In mathematics, it is the study of valid inferences within some formal language. To be clear.

That is part of why I am not affiliated with any political parties. Those in charge of the party or the church use your membership as political capital for what they believe. What you believe is unimportant. While politicians are smart enough to know that a church (like a union) won't swing all its members, there is power in numbers.

You are absolutely correct. Every single debate I have watched of "Dr." Craig goes like this:
"I'm not saying Christianity is correct, I'm saying it's the most plausible. It's not up to me to prove it plausible, it's up to the other side to prove that I'm wrong..." LOL
So, he is right by default, and everybody else needs to prove him wrong. Theism is an arrogant belief to start with, "Dr." Craig just adds the arrogant cherry on top LOL

And amendments don't necessarily help with clarity of the Constitution; they're just additions to the law. And when was the last time there was one of those? I will admit though, it would be interesting if religious doctrine had judges and lawyers to help set rulings on interpretations and such.

Religion in general(not only christianity)should be taught in schools as information. Not as something that is considered true or false. It should be like "religions claim this and this and we give you basic knowledge about the religions of the world and their history and branches and their possible arguments with modern knowledge".Whoever likes them and finds interesting stuff in them can study them further on his own"That would be a good school.

In addition to my first reply (lack of characters). Short history lesson: it was not unusual for people to become slaves voluntarily. If you have no home, no money, no family, etc, you could become a slave for a period (biblically 6-7 years). In that time you were supposed to be cared for, clothed, fed. There weren't "jobs" so to speak in those days. What Exodus is defining is the way a manager/what-have-you should treat their employees.modern paralell? McDonalds... Some break the rules though..

I homeschool because I dont expect our government to teach my children the additional curriculum required to give my children the opportunity to consider the creationist viewpoint (among other reasons). Since I desire for them to have that viewpoint taught to them, it's my responsibility to take up homeschooling and provide that. I will bring all points of view to my children and they will ultimately decide. Big shout out to Noah...

So natural selection is still working, but the time frame for any measurable difference is MASSIVE.
Humanity is that way because, back when we were developing, empathy was successful. It allowed the bonding of people to advance progression of the species many times over.
It could, in a way, be thought of as a vestigial organ, depending on how you view empathy. It was once useful, and if now one thinks it isn't, we just haven't gotten rid of it yet.
Actually natural selection is very inefficient.

If we truly had the option of choosing whether or not to sin,
not every human would be guilty of it.
No Christian has the liberty of saying they have never sinned,
because (according to the doctrine) everyone is "born" in sin.
I don't think its impossible that a person(s) exist/s somewhere, who has never "sinned" in their life.
But that person or those people can't say they have never sinned.
    It's not about choice.

In a way, you are making my point. You and I have a moral code. You pick the parts of your Bible that fit your code and call them wisdom or holiness or whatever, then look at the parts you don't like and discard them. I have read the whole Bible (except the begats) more than once. I realized that MY morality was (overall) better than that in the Bible. So rather than believe the parts that agreed with me were somehow from god, I came to the realization that I did not need that book.

I guess rabbits and rats might have bred on the boat, but pigs and antelope and such would have been in short supply.

I don't understand why people are so polar on arguments like this. I personally am a Christian, however, I think both sides fail to hear eachothers arguments. Religious people should see how science works with their faith and scientific people should look to see if there is any merit to what the religious people assert. Obviously, some religious arguments can't be proven or tested scientifically, which is where no matter which side you are on, you have to be prepared to take something on faith.

If you review the equation for quantum fluctuations you will see that it is dependent on change in time. But if there is no time there is no change. This is exactly my point. All modeling equations stop working at 10E−36 seconds after the Big Bang. The inflationary theory deals with time from this point to 10e−32 seconds it is here fluctuation comes into play.

@grandtheftauto5588 Here's a bomb shell for you. "Random" doesn't exist. It's just a word we use to label occurrences that have too many variables to calculate the exact workings of the process or cause. Even a rock rolling down a hill doesn't do so randomly, there are physics and laws associated with absolutely everything it does. It's no more random than if I drop a book it falls on the floor. Consciously made actions are something that we understand, so we tend to project that onto existence.

Utnapishtim would be the equivalent to Noah, not Gilgamesh.

not to defend slavery but I see people pick on things like this all the time. What Exodus is calling "slavery" is more like "indentured servitude." It contains a list of how the master and "slave" should treat each other. The daughter thing is speaking in terms of marriage and how they should respectively treat each other. Hosea is speaking of God lifting his protection on Samaria and what their fate is/will be. These are just a few of the things commonly misinterpreted.

I know evolution VERY well. I read several of Richard Dawkins books from cover to cover, as well as the commentary book "Richard Dawkins : How a Scientist Changed the Way We Think" and many books on sociobiology and evolutionary psychology, by E.O. Wilson, David Barash, Matt Ridley, Steven Pinker, Robin Baker, etc.

That's a good point because even if that teacher would have kept his foolish beliefs to himself, anyone who is foolish enough to believe such things is intellectually unqualified to be teaching.

The objective of a good school is to give the child correct and testable information in order for them to make correct decisions, while utilizing critical thinking skills.

Yes and thank you. Many people like Sacredotvs seem to think that just because "that's the way we did things a log time ago" means that we should actually ad hear to their conservative values, Hell, Massachusetts started out as a theocracy, should that sway our opinion on American Democracy? Sue, in early schools the only book there was to read were copies of the new testament, I guess it should have been kept that way...lol
