Considering the amount of brilliant artists who've done a version of this down the years I don't say it lightly when I say this is by far the best version ever. Her voice is beautiful but it suits this song perfectly. It's hauntingly beautiful.
There are many verses to this great old ballad but in my humble opinion she left out one of the best:.... "If I had money enough to spend and leisure time to sit awhile There is a fair maid in this town, that sorely has my heart beguiled Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips I own, she has my heart enthralled So fill to me the parting glass, good night and joy be with you all."
Only this version of this brilliant song is very close to my heart. I have lived all verses in this melody and only Cara Dillon gave me the felling I had walking down on George Quai and Dublin Airport. Thank You for this and know that a part from Ireland lives in Transilvania-Romania.
That was so beautiful - the loveliest version I've ever heard of this song. Cara got such a gorgeous Irish lilt to her voice. Thank you for sharing Jools.
TOP OF THE MORNING TO YOU LASS AND HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY !!!!! GOD BLESS YOU AND STAY SAFE !!!!! THANK YOU FOR ALL THE WONDERFUL MUSIC AND I ESPECIALLY LOVE TO HEAR YOU SING THE BOATMAN !!!!!!! THANKS AGAIN!!!!! MICHAEL
Cara's singing merits greater applause than she received here. She has the voice of an angel, and if I ever get to heaven (probably not), I hope her music is played there all the time. Did see her live in Shoreham 2013, and must see her again.
Brian Brown Agree with you. Stunning performance here from Cara Dillon that appears to have been rewarded with a very tepid response. Shame, she's an extraordinary talent.
+Brian Brown I am sure that there was not as much applause as was duly earned because either the audience was dumbfounded by the beauty of her voice or weeping in mesmerized resonance with the sounds. I was hit by both. And goosebumps too.
Discovered her recently and wish I had a long time ago. But suppose it means albums of music to discover from her! This I agree is the best version of this particular song I have heard and the lilt and ornamentation in her singing is beautiful! I think though she has done what all great singers and performers manage to do and that it is surround herself with great musicians. On her album with a cast of great musicians behind her the usual melodies that have been heard time and again are rediscovered and made new and her own. I am a musician and can truly appreciate the arrangement and structure that Sam Lakeman has put together for this song, both here and on the album. A simple piano accompaniment is more than it first seems coupled with the fact that they have both resisted the temptation to put a solo fiddle or low whistle in between the second and third verse - which is brave but makes a world of difference from the expected and ordinary. Sam Lakeman plays the first verse straight as would be normal for a 'usual' version of this song. This is very pleasing though. But in the second and third verse he adds in unexpected but beautiful chord sequences that are not the norm. This adds backing and tone to Cara Dillon's already delicious ornamentation of the song. Give her latest album a listen. These unexpected and intelligent arrangements are everywhere and make for a wonderful listening experience again and again.

This is the best version
Thanks Sue. I love her voice, can't wait to see her in October! :-)
You'll enjoy the show, I can guarantee. All from new album (not out yet), but a couple of old tunes too.
Looking forward to seeing here sing this lovely ballad at The Stables MK in Oct 2013
Almost too beautiful...
Is the the same singer from the Irish folk rock group from the nineties, Equation? Thank you
Yes it is.
@@langsense Thanks!
My pleasure.
