It makes good sense to create the criteria in order to pre-measure what you are ready to accomplish as well as an exit strategy if it doesn’t work. (& apply this to every area in your life - so you are constantly checking progress.) I’ll repeat myself, I wish I knew CD when I was a bit younger. Those of you that are still young & can soak up this info and apply it NOW are that much more ahead. Excellent info at every turn.

The Futur thanks...I'm a female in my 30s who is currently making the transition from the IT field into brand design/development. I am self- taught with most learning being done online for 2 years now. Right now I'm building my portfolio while looking for an internship role to work on professional projects in a brand agency. Any tips you could give a mature intern on how to acquire this role? Thanks so much for the response

I love to see a list like this that helps everyone to get clear what they want. It can help so much.
If you know what you want, the company can help you get to those goals. When you reach those goals and expectations, it helps the company in return, since you are getting more efficient.
Even when you start with a "no" in the beginning, you can turn that into a "yes". There is no need to be afraid to talk with the company about the goals you have, since it can be beneficial for the company too if you reach your goals while you intern for them!

Luckily, from where I'm from, unpaid internships are techincally illegal.
I learned so much from my internship. I became way more efficient and organized.
I can only agree from what you've said here, Chris.

Wow! I am so lucky I found this video at the right time! I want to intern this summer and I was just desperate to get into any organization that would take me in because internship is made compulsory by my university. After watching this discussion I have a very clear list of things I want from an internship and what mindset should I have while interning. Thanks tons Chris!! Keep being awesome!!

  • @lyleea

From what I hear, the problem with the internships is, that you think you have to, for your resume. Like the fancier the name of the company, the better.

      @thefutur  6 років тому +5

lyleea in some cases a big name studio might help you. Imagine if you said you intended at Google or Pixar.
But the content of what you learned is the most important.

I wish I watched this at the exact time it released, rather I wish I was somehow there... I always went to internships with no expectations of pay because I knew I went there to not only gain experience but knowledge, service, network, interaction, pressure, management, heart, perspective, observation. So that I could understand and gain wisdom from it. I LOVE internship, and I do it between sophomore and senior.... every holiday possible, and I LOVED every moment. Now, after COVID, I realized how much I missed the intensity of internships.... and it opened so many doors for me, even now, as I watch Chris Do to gain knowledge, is because I KNOW how crucial they are in the real world. Right now I'm in my Senior year, yet again, thank you for this Chris Do... your content is forever inspiring.

I like how Chris' videos encourage us to take the reigns on our education and finances by designing the learning style that fits us well, even if it means thinking outside the box of traditional advice (such as 4-yr college + unpaid internships). "You're just an organization of one right now."

This list thing is gold even for non-designers looking for a job or internship in any field. Even coming up with such a list is a form of self-leadership and decision making process that every team (of one or more) should have.
I believe employers would sit up and pay attention to anyone who can come up with such a list on their resume/interview and be clear about their goals.
One thing I would love to ask about is : Networking. I understand the power of it, but don't know how to build it or make use of it. It seems from the stories I've heard, that there's a mystical "unfairness" about it...

I have just started my internship for 5 weeks. The company provided salary but the quality of the internship was pretty bad. It is full of ambiguity and u need to figure out yourself whatever task they given u. When I ask questions about the purpose or content of the task I am doing... they seems pissed off and didnt explain in direct and simplistic matter. When I figure something out...what they want is quite simple but they tend to make things complicated. It is full of ambiguity and I have been losing myself, feeling lost in the company. What is the purpose of me doing this and what am I doing? What is this for? My head have been wondering around and it is not easy. I have been crying and trying to seek help but the employees told me that sometimes they feel lost as well.

Disagree in the "get an internship when you're a junior". No. Work your ass off and learn as much as you can as early as possible, that is if you truly want it.

But watching this now makes me frustrated looking back at my dumb internship decisions. I did two internships, both of them were unpaid and they didn't teach me anything. I am attending an accelerated program that's half the time of a degree program. I wish i'd seen this earlier. I started this internship of sorts that on paper sounds good but i'm not really learning anything and not being challenged. Now i'm a bit frustrated I wasn't thinking like this. I was so focused on the resume because I wanted to get something on there that wasn't a retail job. Still appreciated to know now so I can correct my course.

Interesting that the whole "college->internship->job" mindset is for most people just completely un-personal, like it's the next step on their list just because that's how everyone else has mapped your life out for you. I found that one of the more hidden life lessons when you're going to college is that it's all pre-packaged knowledge that you could still get otherwise, and really it all comes down to personal drive. With any certain skillset, some people can vary their speed of learning it whereas others may need it at the even pace that college provides, or somewhere in between
It's really easy to overwhelm yourself with a pre-determined mindset that you have no control over, this lecture really shows that
