Growing the Best Meat in the World | Red Wagyu, Akaushi | PORTUGAL FARM LIFE S4-E46

- Опубліковано 10 гру 2022
- In this weeks vlog we visit Monsaraz in the Alentejo region of Portugal.
We have a look at a very ambitious farming project, to bring the FIRST Red Wagyu (Akaushi) cattle into Europe.
A group of friends, businessmen and farmers got together to import the genetics to a very special breed of Japanese cow. Red Wagyu or Akaushi.
For the last 4 years they have spent a lot of time, effort, and money to bring this prestigious product to tables in Europe. A worlds First!
Wagyu means Japanese cow. Wagyu meat is famous for their rich flavour and marbled texture. Its known as the most luxurious red meat in the world!
We also visit the Lake Alqueva Observatory and get exclusive access to the facility and its telescopes.
We are Ken & Gina. In 2019 we decided to have a mid-life crisis!
We weren't happy with the way things were going for us, so before Brexit, we sold our home and most of our our belongings, and drove to Portugal in our campervan Bob.
We bought a stunning farm in Castelo Branco where we live the good life with our beautiful animals. Back in 2019, we could not find any videos on life here for expats, so we started this channel, documenting our move from the city life to the farm life and buying a farm.

Nice to hear Portuguese 👍
Most definitely :)
So impressed by this episode, I’ve watched it twice! I’m glad there’s investors in Portugal producing this amazing beef, and those amazing cows are so lucky on gorgeous Alentejo with view to barragem do Alqueva, no wonder they’re so yummy! Thanks for this video Ken, loved it

I loved visiting the Alentejo area.
It was actually my first time. Last time I saw it I was just passing through. Lovely place!
Fascinating and beautiful. The observatory is as impressive as Wagyu World. True entrepreneurs and innovators.
I am very disappointed in this vlog - I thought we were going to see Ken riding a horse! Kidding! Wonderful documentary!
I'm waiting for a Grizzly Bear farm before I try to ride anything :D
Thank you Ken for this beautiful and very interesting video. This farm is stunning .Needs more media attention .I never heard about it this wonderful farm life project.
Thanks Maria. I love visiting places like this and documenting it. We will be back to visit other places in Alentejo for sure 😁👍

What a fantastic farm. Coming from Ireland I’m used to seeing cattle rearing and can recognise how special the farm Lionel has with his partners at the University. Wonderful video Ken. Looking forward to the next instalment.
Thank you Maeve, really glad you enjoyed it :)
Wow wagyu!!! Amazing farm and that telescope is fantastic as well as the huge blown up pictures! What a treat Ken! Thank you!
Thanks Michele, really glad you enjoyed it :)
Wow ... the workings of that clock!!! Wow, what an amazing space!! Well done Ken, looking forward to your next video on this farm!👍😮👍
I wish I filmed it past midday so I could show it working a bit better. 😅👍
11:22 those "holes" in the stones were made to make flour. I don't know how they do it in South Africa but in Angola and Namibia they are quite common. They are literally Neolithic tools. It was our Prehistoric ancestors who brought the knowledge of Agriculture, among others such as Livestock and Pottery. In Portugal, if I am not mistaken, the first archaeological evidence appears in the south of the country, in the region between Lagos and Odemira, between the Algarve and Alentejo. It was also these ancestors who brought the knowledge of building stone structures - Megaliths (dolmens, cromlechs, menhirs), from the end of the 8th, beginning of the 7th millennium BC, at least.
Thanks Jaime, fascinating! :)
@@OKportugal It is from the end of the VI milleniun until de the end of the IV milleniun, the neolithic period in Portugal. Sorry about my mistake!
I really enjoyed this video. Cows and Astronomy.!
Enjoyed the video, again!!!
Thanks Melinda
Wow! Beautiful animals 🤤🥩😍... They have a better life then me 😂
They have a beautiful life out there, in stunning surroundings. Of course they are still farmed for their meat, but in comparison to commercial cattle farming its a big difference
In standards and conditions
@@OKportugal I am 100% sure you can taste their happiness on the plate 😜 Quality is always better then quantity. Lovely video also with the old 8 shape clock. Beautiful golden hour shots Ken 👌
The clock is an analemma- which is an accuricized sun-dial- that's cool! Thank you for sharing your exploration!
Thanks for the info Jeff. I can't wait to revisit and have a look at the stars 😁👍
lekker Ken...biltong and droe wors
Imagine some Wagyu biltong :D
Ken, will you be trying & filming the wagyu feast ? They are beautiful animals 😄
I certainly will. I'm hoping to film part 2 next week. Weather dependant.😁☀️👍

All the years i live in England couldn't find a good taste meat.....
I had exactly the same problem. most of the meat was not aged or matured either.
Hey Ken. You do great videos. Also good for portugal
Thanks Maureen 😊
Finally, the red wagyu.
Ken promised and he kept his word. I was looking forward to this video.
Monsaraz is a beautiful region.
Thank you for sharing.
It's an amazing place. We have had non-stop rain for a couple of weeks, so it was a challenge to find a day with no rain 😅 so glad I got to visit. Now I'm looking for another clear day to film the 2nd part of the story

This is the Best and most interesting blog you done
Thanks Lee, we are doing a part two this week (if the weather allows) which focusses on how the Castelo Branco University helped them to breed these cows, and finally we visit their restaurant where we can sample some of this amazing meat :)
Cool video and story. Visiting Porto next June and please link where we can get this beef in restaurants. All the best !
Thanks Matty, they serve this special meat in their restaurant in Castelo Branco, Central Portugal. Its called AkaSushi. thats the only place you will find it in the whole of Europe at the moment.
Great vid. Loved the content. Even tho I May never get to visit im obsessed with all things Portugal. Thanks for this interesting content. Want to see more of the industry and agriculture.
Stay tuned as I really want to visit and film more of these projects 😁👍
I never seen this kind of clock thanks for showing that clock and your video is also interesting
Thanks Suresh 😁👍
That was a meaty episode! - super interesting, Ken, the whole Wagyu project, and very well explained. What a gorgeous area. Btw, a farm is usually described in terms of its end product, so although there are lots of in-calf cows there, the end product is beef, so it's a beef farm. (And similarly a dairy farm, etc.) Sorry to split hairs... Greatly looking forward to the next episode, many thanks. N🌻
Thanks Noelle, I'm not expert on farming and constantly learning. Thanks for letting me know 😊
To use a Devon phrase, you're doing a "proper job" Ken, always good to see your vlogs - now I'm not sure if that's the right term!
@@noelleclemens7057 Yes vlog is the right term :)
Good job frnd
🐃🐃🐃🐃🐃
Thanks 😁👍
Very impressive. Love to have view on a clear night. Also stones circle interesting. ( stone handheld)
Hopefully the skies will clear up soon and I can visit the observatory at night to film more 😁👍
@@OKportugal great
Hi Ken thanks for a very interesting video. I live in Clonmel here in Ireland and we have a farmer / butcher here in town who produces wagu beef on his farm .I think he has been doing it now for a number of years , your friends should look him up maybe they could exchange information , his name is James Whelan and you should be able to find him on line.
Thanks Joe,I will pass his details on :)
Great vlog!! The telescope, the cows, the people, ALL very interesting! Leonel and his crew are great ambassadors for their area and their project!! Well done all.
What about the cow poo etc contaminating the lake?? Is that a problem potentially?
Hugs from 🇨🇦
Thanks Lori, I dint think so as its a huge farm, only 90 cows right now, and the lake is the biggest one in Europe
Most contamination comes from intensive and semi-intensive farming, especially where cattle are housed. This produces slurry, which is the biggest threat to water courses. Extensive farming, which this certainly is - with huge acreage, and low numbers of livestock, feeding on grass, hay, & acorns, will not produce the very loose poo that could be a problem. Beetles, etc., and o/c fierce summer suns, can easily deal with poo on that scale. The lake should be perfectly safe. We may hear more next week - can't wait!
@@noelleclemens7057 thanks Lori, this is a very low impact and eco farm. These guys really want the best for their farm and the animals ❤️
Diverse video, v interesting, and nice area. Fyi it's a Solar Analemma Dial.
Thank you Maria, I had no idea what its called. I want to visit the observatory again at night when the skies are clear and get some video through that big telescope!
@@OKportugal Take lots of night photography of the stars 🤩 I live in a city with night pollution 😢
@Maria D'Ange yes I hope to get lots of footage through that big telescope
💥👍❤
I am from Bangladesh. I liking for same dairy farm job. I know how management dairy farm. Have me 15 years experience. Thanks All
Interesting :)
Been looking at retiring over there and I do eat Carnivore so hmmmmmmm
When you visit Portugal, they have a restaurant where they serve this special meat. It's called AkaSushi in Castelo Branco 😁👍
Yum yum Wagyu (meaning Japanese cow) beef. Do they massage their cows as well?
Very yummy, I did not ask about the massaging. I have heard that they do it in Japan :)
that clock is an analema
Do they also use them for milk? They look very similar to a jersey cow
These are beef cows but you are right they do look similar
I would love to create some special music for your Conservatory episode. Let’s chat.
Thanks Enokk :)
Amazing Wagyu family
Wagyu Beef is sliced paper thin...how many Euro per pound of meat now?
Hi Anna I definitely prefer mine thickly cut so it grills nicely on the outside and remains tender on the inside. I'm not sure how much this would cost at the shops. They only sell it in their restaurant
@@OKportugal My brother in law is a Butcher in UK..and apparently sells a lot to the local Japanese community
@@annar6430 wish id known about it when i lived in the UK :)
And......acorns sustain the famous pata negra pigs over the border in Spain - similar landscape - and in Portugal, too, perhaps....? N🌻
The area is right on the Spanish border so it might be
Yes, there are lot of Porco Preto, or Black Pig in this area. Acorns are a big part of their food... This type of landscape is called "Montado" it's very important because of the biodiversity that supports, and it extendeds between Portugal and Spain areas of Alentejo and Andalucia.
@@pedropinheiro7320 Thanks for the info Pedro :)
Hello
Your videos are impressive
Do u have any idea if they sell to non EU citizens?
I'm from Lebanon and looking for a retirement place
Hi Nabil, anyone can buy property in Portugal, but in order to live here you will need some sort of residency visa. There are a lot of different options. The best one for retirement is called a D7 visa. Goole it, it might be a good option for you :)
Gina are u the photographer today?
No gina was home doing her teaching work. Bruno and I filmed the interviews 😁👍
Stone henge England
Definitely very similar
There is one big site nearby called "Cromeleque dos Almendres". It's much older than Stonehenge (Stonehenge was started about 2000, ended 1500 years and the Almendres is about 6000 to 5000 years old) but almost no one knows it. Is a very beautiful site!
@@pedropinheiro7320 wow incredible, i hope to see it soon!
Trigo is wheat
Hi Hellen, yes I was supposed to put a subtitle into the video to say that but I forgot until I saw you ur comment 😅
@@OKportugal some friends of mine who just bought an apartment in Portugal sent me your video just because of the observatory. I am a science communicator and amateur astronomer. I liked the new and Neolithic observatories but I don't like animals as source of nutrition.
Well produced videos and a great fun. If you want to go around Portugal visiting observatories modern and Neolithic, shout out you might tempt me to go before my sabbatical ends.
@Héllen Távora we will be back to film the stars as soon as the sky cleaes up. Its very cloudy and rainy right now
My husband is a beef farmer in Ireland. He is quite sceptical about the facts you told about the cows. They don’t look in great condition, a bit skinny and we wonder about the price of the feed. It sounds like it could be a bit exaggerated
Hi Eva, I'm not an expert by any means. I visited this farm to document the story, and my information on Red Wagyu is from Google and also from talking to the farmers here. I'd be happy to hear other sides and to learn more 😊
Poor animals. There is no need to murder them just for "your best taste". Cows are intelligent loving animals that mourn the loss of their babies when they are taken away from them.
These animals are not so poor. In the scheme of things they are the lucky ones. They are fortunate to lead happy, relatively long 4 year lives, out in the open, fed good food, as opposed to the animals raised in factory farms at breakneck speed, fed massive doses of drugs to not get sick, and slaughtered to feed the appetites of obese humans who visit KFC or Macdonalds on a daily basis. Think of it in human terms, for these animals its like spending their whole lives in luxury and on vacation, where as the gross majority of animals raised for food live short, miserable lives in a concentration camp-like hell.
Tony Neal - thank you for your kind observation. They are beautiful animals and I too mourn that they are used just to feed already over fed people. Cattle are indeed smart gentle beings who just want to live their natural life, which would be much longer than four years.
@@lindataylor849 Your indignation is misplaced. Direct it to the factory farms of the world where a trillion animals are raised in hellish conditions, all to feed the appetites of the 8 billion humans on this planet.
@@thomperry1187 there’s plenty of indignation to go around for all mistreatment of animals.
There will be a time that the only place you will be able to see animals will be in the zoo, or do you think someone will have cows and other animals just for fun.
Do you know that there are a lot of birds and insects that need cows, sheeps and other animals to survive?
Won’t the cattle contaminate the water with, poop💩💩💩
It's the largest lake in Europe. I don't think a few cows will affect it
