If Russia did invade: How far would the West go to support Ukraine?

  • How strong is the West's resolve when it comes to Ukraine? A steady diet of diplomacy so far failing to lift the uncertainty over Vladimir Putin's true intentions when it comes to those 100-thousand troops amassed at the border.
After Kiev, Germany's new foreign minister in Moscow this Tuesday. What does Annalena Baerbock bring to the table. She is a Green in a coalition led by the Social Democrats. How far will Olaf Scholz push? Will the new chancellor - seen here at NATO headquarters - ultimately green light the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline that bypasses Ukraine and links Russia to Western Europe via his predecessor's home constituency on the Baltic Sea? How hard will Germany and the rest of the EU come down in case of another Russian invasion?
That depends on Washington's resolve: with most international transactions in dollars, would the US treasury go so far as to freeze Russia out of the system? What contingencies has the Kremlin made in case the nuclear option plays out? In the end, can Vladimir Putin bypass the yankee dollar?

Despite the rhetoric, few if any outside parties would be willing to support Ukraine with Troops if Russia invaded. A direct military confrontation with Russia by NATO and/or the U.S. carries the risk of the situation rapidly spinning out of control.

    • @galoguevara6049
      @galoguevara6049 2 роки тому +80

The risk of escalating quickly, thus the West not wanting to escalate further - this is exactly what Russia is counting on to happen. It's happened in the past several times when NATO, or the EU, or the US just take a step back and use "words" and nothing else. Which Russia ignored because they knew these were empty words. It's time to escalate the show of force with an even larger show of force - and be ready to quickly escalate that show of force even more without any hesitation. If an enemy gets use to pushing and pushing as far as it can get away with, without ever facing any real resistance - then of coarse they will continue to do it over and over again. The reality is this... The US and its military are no longer split and spread across multiple simultaneous wars (Iraq and Afghanistan). All our troops are reunited back to being one force and free to concentrate and project all its might anywhere - as well as being flooded with more money and new technologies (or upgraded prior generation tech that is now more lethal). Its time that the US and NATO flood into Ukraine with quick, unmistakable resolve - and use the same untruthful tactics that Russia uses all the time. By dishonestly calling it a "friendly military exercise at the invitation of Ukraine." While also saying NATO and the US are not part of the exercises - and childishly painting over NATO and US emblems on uniforms and equipment (just like Russia did when it invaded Crimea). Show that two can play that same game, and make Russia swallow its own effing medicine. If NATO and the US don't step up with total conviction - then why ever claim to be a super power or a recognized world organization. Its time to kick "The Bear" in the balls. And after that, time to punch "The Dragon" in the face too.

Does nobody read history any more? For as long as it has existed as a coherent state, Russia's foreign policy has had two objectives - absolutely secure borders to the south and west, and actual ownership of warm-water ports. The only factor that has ever prevented or delayed Russia's drive towards both those objectives was its own internal weakness. "Secure borders" does not mean merely defensible frontiers. It means actual borders as far west as can be contrived, AND buffer states, preferably puppets, on those borders. Actual enemies - members of NATO - on its real borders are simply unacceptable to Russia. "Unacceptable" means "not going to happen, no matter what". And that's where we are.

with Ukraine receiving 300 javelin missiles and hopefully more before any war starts, I see this as a bloody battle on the Russian side. since most of the Russian military depends too heavily on tanks and armored troop carriers, they will be at a disadvantage against gorilla warfare tactics with javelin missiles. this will force Russia to use ground troops rather than tanks to invade. a javelin missile can be shot at vehicles, planes, and at groups of soldiers. I have a feeling the war will get too bloody for Russia that it might destabilize the country causing the people to revolt if it goes too far.

I may be absolutely wrong, but I believe Russia won't move until after the Olympics. Once that time has passed we could see an invasion of Taiwan and Ukraine at the same time. Both China and Russia know that if the United States were to enter a conventional contest with either party that it could only choose one, and our clear choice would be in Taiwan. China poses a much more potent threat conventionally and less of a threat strategically (in a nuclear capacity).
Given the proximity of both Theaters to the belligerents, it is clear that logistics won't be an issue for them in the same was it would be for the U.S.
Ukraine would be lost, and I believe with this current administration, that China would be allowed to walk into Taiwan, without a single super hornet ever having released it's payload. We could be seeing a new axis being forged as we speak. The world could be a very different place in a couple years. The scary part is Korea. If China attacks Taiwan and Russia, Ukraine, then why no North Korea Attacking south Korea for unification. The United States simply doesn't have the means after 20 years of prolonged war to deal with multiple superpowers at the same time.

Need doesn't make right. Russia has always been the voice for sovereignty in the UN and now all of a sudden they say they have right to dictate the sovereignty of its neighbors. It's basically the argument of a bullying child nobody want to play with.

This is so pathetic , we wouldn't be in this stalemate situation if Germany and France hadn't been greedy and lazy and increased their dependence on Russia to provide them with gas. They let Russia have power over them, gave them the ability to freeze them to control their energy. The UK is greening its energy mix and gets most of its gas from Norway but we have had to pay higher energy prices to invest like that and have greater energy security.

Just for your information 66% of the German gas comes from Russia compared to only 17% of the French one, and the French consume far less gas than Germans (20 cubic feet/inhabitant vs 35 in Germany). This rate is maintained voluntarily low since years exactly for the reasons you mentioned. It seems a bit excessive to put the two countries in the same basket given the 1 vs 7 overall ratio on russian gas consumption... Edit: some typos, sorry, I'm not a native speaker.

Russia has learned it's lesson from seeing a continental system creep on it's border, everytime means they get invaded. Russia hasn't been aggressive.
The aggression has come from groups like azov, who are trying to ethnically cleanse ukraine, which only the central part of ukraine, is Ukrainian.
Alot of their laws in 2015 prevent the studying of native languages, philosophy and literature.
Azov took these extreme and in the east were shooting crimeans, tartar and russians.
Crimea became independent and was an autonomous republic, before they started there referendum to join russia and subsequently annexed.
Don't pass genocidal laws, and you won't have rebellious groups, after you made your own coup.

      Very dishonest and misleading example.
In the 30’s, Hitler was expanding and pursued continued expansion. Russia does not want expansion because it cannot sustain one - it simply can’t afford it because of its much weaker economy and military versus the West. So it is OK with status quo.
The West on the other hand is EXPANDING which is exactly what Hitler Germany did, it keeps expanding and pushing in towards Russia. They cannot live with a NATO member next to its border. A NATO member state means a US military base. Do you see Russian bases in North America? How would you think the US would feel about Russian bases in South America?
The US should stop its expansionist program and focus on the far East instead. The problem here is not Russia, it’s China.

@@ChainalysisSE Totally agree but I would go one step further… the US should start spending half of their “defense” budget on the well-being of their citizens. Healthcare, housing, education and so forth. There is a lot of unnecessary suffering in the US, the richest nation on earth. But no, for the elites, warfare is welfare.
