Hampton Bay / Home Depot WDF9-2 Reversible Twin Window Fan | Tear Down for Cleaning and Servicing

- The teardown of a Hampton Bay branded electrically reversible 3 speed twin window fan sold at the Home Depot. The model number is WDF9-2 and it is manufactured by Foshan Bailijian. This video shows the disassembling and reassembling of the fan for cleaning, service, and repair.
This is the competing product to the Holmes window fans models HAWF2041 and HWF0910AT. The Holmes fans are notoriously difficult to take apart due to the clips on the accordion side panels. The design of this unit allows for much easier initial access to the inside for cleaning, which is about as far as most consumers will ever go. I also found it easier to remove all electrical and mechanical components to wash the plastic components wet.
Reassembly was not quite as fluid as I would have liked as the plastic is a rather flexible material which doesn't snap into place as quickly and accurately as I'd like it to. One of the screw studs broke which caused an alignment issue when reassembling. The Holmes fans seem to be made of a sturdier, less flexible plastic.
Overall, I think this one is much easier to work with than the Holmes one. The motor quality seems to be comparable to the Holmes.
A future video will compare the performance and use of the two units. This video was largely just for the build quality and disassembly/reassembly procedure.
August 2022 just tried to get this fan cleaned, it's filthy after two months use, got all the screws out..... nothing seemed obvious for next step... so I googled and found your instructions.THANK YOU !!! EXCELLENT!!
YUP 👏👍 I took mine apart and found it DRY and BURNED from NO OIL 🤷♂️ . The wicks turned into MUCK and the shaft was dry . I have a slightly different design as in I have a sealed clam shell , which might have made it worse . I cleaned it with WD-40 and lubed it with a high speed , high temperature lube I used when I was an industrial engineer , and she spins like crazy now 😃👍 . Thanks 🙏.
These are really good fans. I like how they have a thermostat. Good cleaning!
1:27 I picked up one of those Wind Dance window fans that you described (I think it's a Holmes rebrand) from the trash, and somehow got both the slide on panels yet both accordion clips were broken. Wind Dance model HT22
Thanks for letting me know.
good and long servicing video bro I enjoyed it although I liked the freak shows also including the phone ringing lol glad you got it working again
It wouldn't be a video without a freakshow
@@JordanU Lol true bro
July 31, 2024. Congrats on this excellent video. It is one of the best self-help ones I have ever seen based on good videography and clear, simple explanations.
I have the exact same window fan and the left fan is not moving when turned on. I took the motor apart as shown, oiled the same spots and it still does not turn at all. I don't know what else to look for. I took off the "motor" plate and saw no loose wires, so am not sure if there is anything else I can do. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Does the motor vibrate at all when powered on?
@@JordanU No, the motor runs quietly and smoothly (normal) but only one the fan turns. The other fan shows no sign of moving (giving it a push does nothing)
Awesome video bro on the Twin Window fan teardown for cleaning and servicing I like how these 2 fans turning on at the same time I enjoyed the video
Thanks.
These seem to be pretty good fans for new ones. I thought it was interesting the rotors have cooling fins.
Agreed. Usually the motors with the cooling fins are better quality.
Jordan U good video as always, man i really enjoy your content a lot. Any reason why other companies dont follow this design e.g lasko with the cooling fins in the motors, im sure they will last much longer
The secret oil that seems to last forever, is ........... electric shaver oil. It is non-toxic and thus is NOT designed to break down after x period of time. That oil has kept my dual fans running perfectly and at a higher RPM than before, along with my standing single fan, and the motor in my 23 year old DANBY window air conditioner. The air conditioner motor bearing had dried up completely and the the motor was squealing big time, until I re-oiled each of the the bearing felt pads.
How would you go about purchasing one of these types of motors? I've been looking, and have not found a seller.
0:26 - 0:27 if only I could make that a ringtone.
OK then
I hear at 0:27 both a Uniden and a Panasonic cordless phone ringing. (More familiar with the Panasonic ringing considering I have a Panasonic 5 handset set in my house from Costco.)
OK
But it lets bugs get in and out, why is there no screen? Any DIY ideas please and thank you!
Windows should have screens.
@@JordanUThanks for reply, I am aware, my problem is the fan will not fit my window with screen in place, mobile hone. I was hoping someone might have a diy solution. I will donate it. Great video btw.
hey man do you know how exactly the thermostat works on this fan? because it seems very wonky.
It's a standard thermostat.
@JordanU i understand that, but im not very familiar with how it works because the only label for it is just the different sized dots
Don't know if you will see this but I'm having trouble removing the blades from mine . I have pulled and pulled but they won't come off. It's not the exact same model as this one but close . Any suggestions?
It looks more like the wft9
Great 👍
OK
I like it
OK
i get those silent calls all the time.
Not OK.
I thought Hampton Bay only made ceiling fans! Interesting.
Hampton Bay is actually home depot's house brand; Tables, chairs, cushions, light fixtures, outdoor heaters, and portable fans are some other stuff that they sell.
The Hampton Bay name is being put on quite a few different products now.
The I the like the it
