Exploring An Abandoned Oil Platform With A Drone From A Cargo Ship | Life At Sea

- A drone is launched from a cargo ship anchored in Houston, Texas to explore a nearby abandoned oil platform called the Fieldwood Energy High Island 179-A.
There are many abandoned oil platforms and wells scattered throughout the Gulf Of Mexico often due to companies declaring bankruptcy and the significant costs to properly decommission and remove them.

I bet you were glad to get that drone back again!
It’s always great when I have a successful landing! The battery was depleting pretty rapidly when I was recording this too since it was so cold out.
ship looks more abandoned than the oil rig
Yea she’s heading to shipyard next month!
Great video Bryan - even abandoned it’s such an amazing show of engineering
This is amazing footage. I look forward to more!!!
Your footage and content are insane. I love it. New subscriber here. Looking forward to more.
Thanks for posting
wow, super cool vid.
thanks for sharing it.
We love your videos.
That tired old girl is ready for the knackers.
New sub here. Great videos mate. Question, how many of those abandoned oil rigs are out there?
Cool 👍😎
Oil companies should be required to setup a fund to cover the costs of decommissioning oil platforms. The fund should be able to cover the full cost of decommissioning the oil platform(s) and should be available even if the company goes bankrupt.
Agreed. This really shouldn't be allowed. If the companies are done, they should be scrapped and cleaned up. Either that or sold and used for some other purpose.
Yes I totally agree. Unfortunately, the reality is these shell companies go out of business to avoid paying to cleanup their wells and platforms..
The freight rates must be good because that vessel looks like its overdue for a dry dock. Maersk usually have high standards both of ships and crews, so its not the norm. She is 15 years old now so perhaps another 5 years of service remain before she is sold or scrapped. 20 years was the average for the tankers I worked on. Good quality video and presentation.
Thanks, she is actually heading to shipyard next voyage to Bahrain and will be around for at least another 5 years in our fleet
Great filming! How did you know you could fly out and back that far?
I took a radar range of this platform from the bridge and knew it was about 1.3 miles away which is within the max range of my drone of about 4 miles.
Superb, I'm currently sat on an oil platform (north Sea Scotland). Sad to see abandoned platforms. Nice drone, matice by any chance? looks to be a substantial drone? Superb video mate, very nice and interesting, just a shame you cant gain access inside :(
I had no idea these enviro disasters are allowed to exist. thanks
Another excellent video, what model is your drone? I just ordered one I hope will be as good as yours. Once again thanks for all your videos. I’m still watching your last video, can’t sit still for a 4 hour video. 🤣🤣
This is a DJI Mavic 2 Pro. What drone did you order?
@@BryanBoyle Hey Bryan, I ordered a beginner model, 2021 4K Camera Rotation Waterproof Professional S32T Drone by Humonam. I’ll step up after I learn how to operate.
This would have to be the worst looking Maersk ship I have ever seen it looks like a rust bucket needs a dry docking soon.
She is heading to dry dock next trip in Bahrain
@@BryanBoyle Hi Bryan I presume your limited crew size restricts the amount of chipping and painting you can do.
Howdy, does having a drone aboard a container ship quality it as an aircraft carrier? 😎🚁🛳
Lol I suppose you could say that
Nice video Bryan! Brings back memories..seafaring career ended early I worked as a 3/M cargo ship and 2/M AHTS.i immigrated in USA to be with my wife ..but I'm proud to say Once a seafarer always a seafarer..Mabuhay
Glad to bring back the memories. Seafaring life can be difficult on a family, so I totally understand why you changed careers. Once a seafarer always a seafarer
Pretty cool! What drone are you flying? Pretty good range on it.
Mavic 2 pro
Fieldwood Energy. Company went bankrupt and are now selling off assets to other oil companies. Other major oil companies have filed papers in court to make sure that the parent company pays to have these platforms decommissioned and the area cleaned up.
How easy/difficult was it taking off and landing on the monkey island with the metals, antennas and scanners around? Do you do hand launch and catch?
Amazing🥰🥰🥰
Aren't all these abandoned oil platforms a threat to the ships passing?
There is a designated pathway/channel leading into the Gulf ports through the minefield of oil platforms that is protected from rigs or platforms being setup. They still like to setup oil platforms right on the edge though so it can be pretty narrow in areas for safe navigation into port.
why is it abandoned , can they not jack it back up and tow it somewhere , just to leave it out here goes to show how much respect they have for the ocean
It's not a jackup rig. 😁
This company went bankrupt so they never finished the decommission process. It’s a major issue in the Gulf of Mexico
Its a fixed platform
Sick... what are you flying?
Mavic 2 pro
Idk the earth looks pretty flat based on this footage
I can always count on you Evan for a good one liner 😄
@@BryanBoyle 😘
Definitely not a jackup rig. How far away does your drone fly before it will lose signal and return? 😮
I can fly it about 4 miles before it loses signal when it’s direct line of sight without obstructions. It’s pretty amazing technology!
Is this ship going to shipyard soon?
Yes it is on its way there next month
Hey bryan!
Im from Germany and im about to join the Maritime Industry next year. I got some questions and i would appreciate it if you could give me some answers. In Germany it's very hard to get informated about this topic.
1. How hard it is to be away from home for so long. Do you got internet on board? How do you use your vacation?
2. Are you allowed to listen to some music when you are on the bridge for watch? Of course i don't talk about special times like docking or smth. I mean if you are alone or with your partner. Is it okay then?
3.entertainment on board. What you guys do in your free time? Watchin films? Playing games like playstation or something?
That's all, maybe you got time for that.
Greetings! :))
Hi congrats on joining the maritime industry. It definitely is hard to be away from family for so long, but then you have months of uninterrupted vacation to spend with family which is pretty amazing. We do have internet onboard, and most ships have WiFi now. It’s great for web browsing, sending texts, and even video chatting if the bandwidth is fast enough. We do listen to music on the bridge. Most ships I work on have satellite radio. Usually the policy is music is allowed when we aren’t maneuvering in and out of port or during other shipboard operations/emergencies. Most crew watch movies in their off time, play video games, workout in the gym, read books etc. I personally like to make videos in my free time but you are welcome to spend it as you please. Hope this helps and best of luck!
@@BryanBoyle wow! Thank you man! This helps very much ❤️
Bruh, that place is not abandoned... it's just a little rusty.
Oil rig has a number of microwave communication dishes on its mast. Maybe serving another life as mast in ocean.
I’m not sure. There’s quite a bit of equipment left there so seemed like a pretty hasty decommission. That company went bankrupt too which probably explains why
@@BryanBoyle Yeah, we made our money, lets pull out and screw everyone else. These rigs/platforms should be bonded, so the bonding agency can sell or remove them.
Yea it’s a huge problem in the Gulf of Mexico as well as the North Sea up near Europe. There needs to be more accountability
I love your videos...
Huge love from Pakistan
shit lookin exactly like rust lmao
Nice job man want u email bro
Ah, unethical capitalism giving no fucks about the environment.
Joe Biden is to blame !
Another knuckle dragger comment...
Opinions are like a$$holes. Everybody has one. Some stink more than others....
