Berke Filiz actually reminds me of 2002's Moonbabies from Planet X. That band to me is top notch in prog-metal sometimes they even djent back in late 90's when djent was still fresh, too bad no new material since 2007.
my bad ; it's confusing because it's almost the same band ; I love LTE, some synth sounds are a bit cheap nowaday, but the overall composition in awesome
Commented on one of your videos a couple of months ago, saying that you deserve recognition... I have no idea you reached 42K subscribers, jeez. Congragulations man! I look foward to your videos all the time, you always put out really amazing and interesting content! Sending love from Liverpool, England! :D
Also: When you do those 'Inverted Power Chords' (the 5th below), I always like to add an octave, check out the intro to Sylosis - Empyreal, it's the best way to make your 6 string sound like a 7/8 string :D
I just discovered this channel through this video and I immediately subscribed. What a gold mine! Clear and pedagogical. I am a bass player (mainly prog metal/djent) and very interested in improving my understanding of the topics you address in your videos! Congrats and thank you! 👍
I love these Songwriting Vids! I love the prog-metal stuff too! It's pretty hard to hear and understand the nuances of Prog-metal so I really appreciate Vids like this! Thanks for the knowledge!
Thanks man, it's exactly the sound that triggers me so hard. I'm his #1 fan for sure. That Zulegmat is fucking insane. I could live the rest of my life just listening to his music
No it's really not. Same set of notes, but it's a completely different scale with a different sound and use. That would be like saying that E Minor and G Major are the same, which would be utter nonesense.
Bro!!!! I couldn’t remember what your channel was called and it’s been two years since I was subscribed to you (account got deleted). Just wanted to say for the way my brain works you are the best music teacher on the web. You have a great way of simplifying complex theories! Thanks you!!!!
This is by far my fav music channel. thank you once again my friend it was funny, informative, and inspiring this from someone not some much into djent.
Ive been playing for over fifteen years but I never had any lessons or music theory lessons. You make it crazy easy to understand all these modes and scales and how to apply them!
i have to say I love your videos and have been watching for years you've helped break down basic music theory for me and have so much content like this that helps open my eyes to more ways to play. Thank you so much for these videos and keep up the great work!
mate,,, your videos are fantastic,, your teaching technique is fantastic... your knowledge on everything is fantastic... i have watched loads of your vids,, and i can feel the light in my head starting to light up... FANTASTIC,,,, cheers :)
Concept album? All power to you Jake. I grew up with concept albums. A friend and I are also working on one now. Great tutorials . . . a real inspiration . . .many thanks.
I love the Lydian dominant! I actually used it in my solo in "A New Day Dawns" a couple years ago (posted on my channel). To me, it represented a kind of chaos and inbalance that can offset a typical day (which we introverts don't respond well too, lol) before resolving back to the main major feel of the overall song. It's an instrumental, but you might like it. (And maybe it'll give you some ideas in finishing your album. Looking forward to hearing it.) I like your channel and your posts. Keep up the great work as always, brother.
Dude, I'm surprised I haven't heard of your channel before! Definitely subbed, notifications- on! Great video looking forward to more content like this! Thanks!
I just fail to grasp odd time signature concept and this video brought me one step closer very interesting also how you explained your creative process in coming up with super proggy riff thanks
I tended to employ the dominant lydian when I'm improvising in prog style. And it was very natural to me. I was emphasising on the major 3rd and the difference between the perfect 5th and the diminished 5th and I used to focus on the minor 7th to darken the riff for example. ^^
Awesome lesson Jake. And please let us know when we can get a listen to your `over-the-top` prog rock thing you mentioned. The sounds like something right up my alley. Thanks!
Love this channel, this is a lesson I have taught, well, without graphics... Lydian dominant is in almost every Oingo Boingo song btw, Private Life, You Really Got Me (cover), prime examples, as well as nearly all of his scores...including the Simpsons theme 👍
You are one of the lucky few who have recovered their guitar picks before they enter the void. But in all seriousness, very cool video! I've never really thought something could be heavy in a major key, but Lydian Dominant is a very cool scale for that, Phrygian Dominant is another good scale (doesn't sound major, but has a major 1 chord lol)
Love this, it is so creative... but maybe you did not notice that while you play a 9/8 measure, your on screen bouncing display of the meter shows an 8th note, rather than a quarter to complete the full 9 as played. Well done, though.... I just discovered your channel, and I am thoroughly enjoying :)
You should mention that even though the note G isn't in the key, the power chord is perfectly allowed because the 5th is the most related note(other than the octave) to the root in that power chord. To be clear, when you play the C you hear a G in it anyway(as an overtone).
I really like your content, you understand how to structure and display information really well, thank you for that. Now let’s get honest here for a moment: I have been searching around on UA-cam like crazy, but no one is really able to explain and giving a applicable system how powerful melodies can be written. We have all those classical devices of classic composition, for, example the video: what is a melody by Bernstein, but There is no real systemization. What intervals are used in regards to chords and scales, popular examples, how melody and lyrics are related to another, how singers come up with melodies, if they start before beat 1, what common schemes are used in popular music nowadays? I am dying to understand this, do you think it’s worth a shot to make a video about it? I’m interested what you’d come up with :)
Imagine Dream Theater having Lydian Dominant, Phrygian Dominant, Harmonic Minor, Mixolydian, and most important, odd time signature. Although prog band really have those but to me, DT is really everything. And I can't be bored with Dream Theater. We can really explore the music theory with Proggresive rock/metal.
I think Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu by Dream Theater is in Lydian Dominant for the most part. Very cool. Just got my hands on a 7-string so I might just have to experiment with some of this djenty stuff.
4:05 The only issue is that adding a natural fourth makes it a mixolydian with occasional #4. Just like Day Tripper by The Beatles is in E mixolydian with occasional b3 and b6
@@johanwodzynski8637 yes but with the example jake provided it was more prog and the idea of lydian dominant applied in the video leaned more towards prog if you ask
Hay Jake, I started watching a lot of your videos lately and really enjoying it, your videos are awesome! I would really like to here your concept album ('cause that part with the vocals sounded amazing!) Is the album out yet? And if so, where can i find it?
Music theory isn’t a set of rules, more like a set of colors in your musical palate. The more strange colors you have, the weirder your painting is going to be. That’s why prog people like music theory, we want to find the most interesting scales to make weird music.
People mention Dream Theater and Ayreon. Scar Symmetry also explores this mode a bit (check out the song Holographic Universe). Thanks for this lesson!

Lydian + Different time signatures + Concept album

But there's time travel involved, it's definetively Ayreon.
It's Lydian Dominant, not Lydian, AS YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE IN THE TITLE AND IN THE VIDEO, but it does sound similar.
@@ingreynelg absolutely love planet x. Do you know any YT vids where Planet X is discussed. Haven't come across much
This makes me think of Dream Theater... Like, a whole lot of Dream Theater. Great vid!
this makes me think of "Liquid Tension Experiment - Another Dimension " which was before dream theater XD ; this guys were good

LTE is where they picked up Jordan Rudess
Reminds me of The Count of Tuscany :)
do not be embarrassed by how long you've been working on your conceptual album, you're taking your time to make it sound as good as you can
Thanks man.
Locrian - weird/creepy
Phrygian - evil
Aeolian/minor - sad
Dorian - folk/funky
Mixolydian - folk/fun
Ionian/major - happy
Lydian - on drugs
Superlocrian: demonic invocation ritual
Pop: let's make major sad, and minor happy. 😅
@@MaimiZhang Hey There, Delilah: "You called?"

More prog rock in my opinion. Not much of djent
Not with a standard tuned six string, that's for sure. Could probably pull off some cool djent stuff in Lydian dominant with a 7 string, though.
You need more strings for that. Open 7th is a must, even 8/9th are really helpful.
@@alphaenemy There's no need to get more strings to play Djent. With a six string in standard, if You know how to djent, You will djent

Djent is all about ambient layers, and tone-heavy bass. The guitar is the centerpiece, but the rest is what guides the ears to it, framing the melody.

Getting some Ayreon vibes there. Nice one
As Djent on a six string in standard tuning. Periphery does six string Djent in Drop-C.
Great Melodic minor mode theory and the ubiquitous lydian dominant scale. The rhythmic patterns remind me of Frank Zappa.
