If you looked at the bootstrap trays there is a large hole on the bottom to put your finger in to push up the plants. No need to use a knife. I just checked the website to confirm it. Very similar to epic gardening pots
I use these trays and that’s how I pop out the plugs. They come out without any trouble using your finger to pop them out from the bottom. Never had any issue with the plugs falling apart.
I do like root - training ribs, but air pruning slits are my FAVORITE! air pruning trays are tricky in that, in order to get the beneficial effect, you need to AVOID PACKING THE SOIL DOWN WHEN FILLING THE TRAY; THAT IS WHY YOUR ROOTS ONLY FILLED HALFWAY DOWN!!!
I like the six cell from bootstrap I can do six of each variety. I can just grab the six that are ready and plant them they have the slits and finger hole as well. I can leave the plants in the trays longer without getting root wrapped.
Travis, it looks like the "air pruning" is keeping the roots from forming along the edge in the Bootstrap Farmer tray, but those side roots are a plus in the way they form in the PropTek trays and hold the root ball together. I almost ordered some of those trays to try, but I'll stick with my PropTek trays after seeing this. And with the PropTek, even if the plants are small, a 3/8" dowel will do the job gently pushing up and out from the bottom.
I have a proptek tray and do like it but have to use 10 x 20 trays because the proptek just don't fit my situation, wish they would make a 10 x 20 tray.
Travis, you know I love my Proptek trays! I have 6 of the 162 cell trays, and 1 of the 338 cell trays that I use for onions. They are worth their weight in gold!! Oh to be your age! The first year for my 3500 sq ft garden, I was on my hands and knees putting in transplants. It liked to cripple me!! My knees, hips and back hurt SO badly!! Then factor in the fire ants - OW!!! The coup de gras was a brown recluse spider bite on my shin that took about a year to heal. When Fall came around, I invested in a Stand n' Plant transplanter and seeder, which allow me to keep standing when I plant transplants and seeds. No more fire ant bites, and so far, no more brown recluse bites. The two beauties also get me done in a fraction of the time, too! Now for that drip tape. I know there's method to your madness, but I LOVE my drip tape and hand watering even two rows of garden really messes with my upper back now. I have my garden laid out in two watering "zones." Each mainline had around 18 or 20 holes for drip tape lines. I replaced all of my row starts with row start valves so I can control the watering and feeding through the drip tape better. When I start out, I'll do three or four rows, and shut off all of the valves to the other rows until I can get those rows ready. That way, I can use my drip system to water and feed even if I only have a few rows hooked up. Growing old ain't for sissies - I have to smart, 'cause it will darn near kill me if I try to do things the way I did them at 40 or 50!
I am loving my PropTek trays. I bought a case of the 162 cell trays from Greenhouse Megastore and was wondering what the heck I was gonna do with 10 of those monsters, fast forward a couple weeks and I have 8 of them filled with fall veggies, lol.
Our first front of the season is on the way! Expecting below average of 65° high of 70°. Cant hardly contain myself 😂. Mustard seeded and the first transplants go in tomorrow. Finally putting summer behind us 😅
I wonder if the green tray, with those open slits, also has roots growing out there, and that causes the soil block to break up when trying to pull it out. Either way, I prefer to pot up once from that tiny size cell, to a 3x3 for squash, zucch, cukes, etc.
We got windstrip trays from neversink and they’ve grown the worst seedlings I’ve grown in 7 years. They’re sturdy and all that fun stuff, but the larger hole in the bottom allows the seedling mix to fall out. I’ve tried so many different methods but overall not a fan. I’ll be going back to the older style.
I think you may have discussed this in another video, but have you ever experimented with soil blocks? Some of my best plants came from soil blocks. I got away from it because of space but now that I have a large area in my basement for seed starting I’m thinking of going back to it.
I tried soil blocks a long time ago -- once. It was very time-consuming IMO compared to using a commercial-grade tray. The soil blocks also require much more delicate watering initially to keep the soil block in tact. But if it works for you, go for it.
@@LazyDogFarm Yep, absolutely agree with all of your comments. At this point I don’t start nearly as many plants as you do, but once I finish my 40 x 40 fenced garden, that may change. Instead of water from the top I bottom water. I put the blocks on a mesh bottom tray and put them in a tray full of water, then remove them after they become saturated. Definitely a lot more work.
I do have quite a few attachments, but I really only use three. I use the plow set to make furrows. And then I use the cultivator teeth and oscillating hoe for cultivation/weeding.
You can't expect a large, solid root ball with roots that wrap around the inside of the cell if the cell is specifically designed to air prune the roots.
@@LazyDogFarmOther than a select few monocots, there aren't any plants for which pruning any part of the seedling, roots or foliage, is anything but counterproductive.
@@xortab I did a side by side comparison and found the soil blocks grew the healthiest largest plants as long as you bottom water. No plastic and plants took off much faster after transplanting.
Have you ever thought about using a fertilizer doser instead of a venturi type? I switched from ez Flo to a doser and I no longer have issues of leftover fertilizer in the bottom of my ez Flo, due to product settling too fast. . You don’t have to worry about water flow as much with the doser style, whereas venturi and ez Flo require a certain amount of water flow.
Greenhouse Megastore has some 10x20 Proptek trays that a standard humidity dome should fit. But I'm not aware of any humidity domes for the larger Proptek trays.
Now that's what I said, too. I couldn't help but to think it would be a pain trying to get the cells filled with soil with so much of it dropping thru all those holes. Seems inefficient to me.
What happened? Did Bootstrap drop you as a sponsor? BTW, I believe you are the ONLY one I've ever seen actually grab the base of a plant and try to tug it out of a cell from a tray. The Bootstrap trays actually have a great big hole in the bottom big enough to push the plug out with, why you didn't cover this tells me you have a personal agenda against the tray company for some reason. THAT, or you are attempting to get a sponsorship from the other company. So which is it TRAV? LOL
I've never been sponsored by Bootstrap or any other seed tray company. Just sharing my experiences. You must have never seen the commercial guys plant. They pull the plants out the tray just like I do.
Personally, I don't see any difference in Travis's videos and education skills. I watch Lazy Dog Farm because he speaks to everyone. Beginners and experience gardeners! Great job Travis, don't listen to sour grapes.
Travis, you stay you. I feel you care about promoting the joy of gardening, failures and wins, since you show the realities. Gardening is about experimenting and sharing, not dictating. Mostly I watch to see what's next for the "girls".😂 That in itself shows you are a wholelistic farmer, not just a gardener. Love ya man. And go Tigers. My tiger bucket is the secret to my garden.
Awesome. I love my orop tech trays other than the throw away ones i dont have a basis of comparison but this makes me feel like i didn't miss anything. Soil is lookin good travis. Keep them chickens poopin.

I agree. I have the 6 cell trays and just pushed them up from the bottom. No issues at all

I use the Neversink farm trays. Like they they come in different configurations with small ones for a home garden to full size.
My starts are growing in a DG cheap tray that cost $2 bucks and so far so good 😊

Valid point. After seeing the results, I much prefer "trained" roots as opposed to "air pruned" roots.

I find my transplants with air pruned roots took off much faster and resulted in larger plants.

I like the idea of using hard plastic until u have to get plugs out without having an adequate hole to push it up.

I have studied on it quite a bit. I'll probably go to some sort of system like that if we ever upgrade to a larger greenhouse.
What happened to the benchmade?
Can't find it. I've looked everywhere. I've yet to purchase another because I keep thinking it will appear.
I always thought just hand watering is plenty good enough after the drought this year in north mo im so going to get some drip drip going on
You won't regret it. Drip is the way to go.

How often do you water & feed your transplant trays? Just asking
Every day. We inject it through our watering system.
Yes oc❤❤❤❤❤❤nice
Come on now give ya pops some props and call em hoss tools seed trays, I just bought a 5 pack and they’re the best I’ve ever had.
Alabama math! 🤣
Interesting, I think the air gaps are in the green trays is a gimmick. I wouldn’t have it.
It definitely seems like a waste of space between the cells.

I can't find my Benchmade. Makes me sad because I've had it for so long. I'm waiting on it to appear somewhere before I get a new one.
