    For a challenge I did this cave without ever switching on my headlamp.
    It took about 75 minutes of feeling along the walls and using the flow of water between my fingers to check I was still going upstream.
    I'm an experienced caver (in my 60's) and I had done the cave many times, but I must admit there were times when I could feel my stress levels rising!! Seeing the light at the end of the cave was a very pleasant experience. For another wee challenge I climbed up the waterfall, instead of using the fixed aids at the end.

      I experieced a casee of lamp going off in the middle of the way. So scared. You chose not to use the headlamp. Do you do it alone?

      @@vincentlife99 Hi Vincent, I did it with a friend, so we had a bit of morale support. But the noise of the stream meant we were often out of contact.
      It's an absolute golden rule of caving to have at least one back up lamp.
      It is only possible to traverse this cave in absolute darkness because there are no step drop off's or shafts to fall down!

    Well we did the caves today, 2 Well prepared ladies. It was amazing.
    The 2nd to last waterfall was difficult, struggling against the water to get up, but I pushed Alysia up, then she hauled me up using a leather belt we took for this purpose. The water was about 1.30m to 1.5m in places. The head torches were so useful. And layers of thermal underwater.
    It was Impossibly dark with out light.
    I marveled at the shimmering on the cave roof. Magical.
    Tonight my muscles ache from the effort of walking against the flow and stepping over boulders.
    Well worth it, folks.

    Usually my claustrophobia kicks in and I'm uncomfortable just watching someone in a cave.
    For some reason it didn't happen with this video. Maybe because you were able to walk upright through a majority of the cave. Very cool formations in the limestone. If i ever make my way to New Zealand I have every intention to see this myself and possibly make my way into the cave.

    Great video. How difficult is it to navigate?

    • @JesseStLouis
      @JesseStLouis  3 роки тому +2

      Easy, just follow the flow of the water upstream. Bring 2 good (ideally waterproof) sources of light, not just a cellphone. And probably wetsuit or neoprene socks. You can stay out of the water for most of it except the very beginning and end.

      When I went, that trail was too steep and nothing to stop me or cling to. I sat on my behind, grabbed the hem of my shorts (to keep gravel from flying in), leaned back a little. And slid down. Worked well and I didn't end up with any abrasions to mess with later.
