three years. If you scored low and didn't make that list you would
have to wait a few years before another was given and if you made
it you had to pass a lot of other things and if you didn't pass, you
were out. And since early 2000's and up to now they have walk-in
tests, every day, don't need an appointment. You sit at a computer
(in the past had to take the handwritten test and wait and wait
until you found out you score) With the walk-ins they do the test
right on the computer and get your score right then. You have to wait
awhile and then go do it again if you fail. The NYPD lowered ALL the
normal standards. They just needed bodies. You can have a misdemeanor and still get hired, prior to the 90's you were out if you had a speeding ticket.
They had thousands of applicants every time there was another test so there were MANY, MANY others to meet 'all' standards. Those days are long gone.

Being a police officer is x10 more dangerous than being a soldier in the frontline somewhere in Afghanistan. When you're a soldier you know who's the enemy, when you're a cop - you don't. And if you do, then you're not allowed to know. As a soldier, you can prepare to encountering the enemy well in advance, but as a cop - only after you have 100% proof (not confidence! Solid proof! Preferably, documented and signed. Because later you'll have to defend yourself in the court and try to prove you shot the perp not because you're r@sist) that the other person is "dangerous". In practice, this means you have no more than a split second to react. But the cops get far less praised than the army/navy/air force vets.
And, worst of all, as a cop, your own people and your own government hate you. Not to mention your own wife who only gets to see you once in a few days and knowing nothing about you and whether you're alive or not in between these occasions. So, what's the point of being a cop if the only reason is your teenage dreams of justice and protecting the innocent?
