I'm not a particular fan of rural areas, but I must say that watching this video, I did not care one bit about what you were doing with the vehicle. The scenery was just too amazing. And the fact that you'd only see other cars every now and then made it somewhat eerie, but a good kind of eerie.
dre1507 the best part is when I lived there, those are the roads I actually used to get places, not just for recreational driving. In CA I have to drive 45 minutes outside of the "LA Grid" to get the good roads, this was like half a mile from my parents house.
This is one of the most highly underrated cars in the last 20 years. The 3.0L TT N54 is a beast and without engine upgrades, can be comfortably pushed to 450bhp with an upgraded ECU tune, larger intercooler, and a bigger turbokit.

By the way, I had the Z4 v1, and it wasn't so weighted, but the new one makes it back thanks to the amazing engine...(231 hp to 306 hp with more torque thx to the turbos)
I'm just glad it's a manual! Manufacturers really need to realize the manual transmission cannot and should not be phased out. Keep the paddles for business men who want to dish out the extra cash to show off, but ALWAYS maintain an option for a manual.
Evan Baucke You suppose I want a hydraulic steering rack? I do actually. You say that like it's a bad thing? I don't think anyones ever said that like it's a bad thing. Mouse Click There will still be an enthusiast market for regular vehicles, they cannot phase that out. If they do, I hope it's long after I'm dead. Just a shame future generations won't be able to experience what driving REALLY feels like.
There's nothing wrong with the Z4, but the scenery, just pure awesome. Combined with the F-Type footage, some music and engine sound, I could watch this for hours.
I like this format ghetto films on this channel with the occasional proper film and all the 5 Star stuff on Drive. Makes it easier to find a previously watched video after a few months.
I convinced my friend to buy a 2009 sDrive30i 6MT and learn to drive manual on it. Took him a couple hours and he's been enjoying the car for over 2 years. His has the discontinued N/A 3.0L inline 6 producing 255 hp and something like 220 ft*lbs but weighs ~3200lb. Even at 3200lb I think the car feels a bit heavy and the suspension is pretty soft (no sport pack) so it tends to roll and understeer. It definitely falls into the category of luxury GT, not a true sports car like the Boxster/Corvette, but I feel that those cars can double as a luxury GT pretty well. The Z4 is a much softer car overall.
***** Yup, I love the character of the N52B30. It's incredibly linear down low but still gets the most power up near its 7000rpm redline. I just wish the E89 chassis was better. It's a good cruiser but not much of a sports car. Maybe the M package would help a bit.
I've got the E85 and ironically it's a bit too far in the opposite direction: NVH isn't great and the ride is abysmal. Looks like they overcorrected a little!
agc93 I guess it's up to opinion. The E89 isn't comfy like a Merc or Bentley, but it's not raw enough to be a real sports car. Then again, my friend's has the base suspension with just H&R lowering springs. I haven't driven an E85 so I can't comment on it.
Zygrene Yeah I've only been in an E89 as a passenger, but it's a whole world comfier and more refined than the E85. The older 85 is a bit too raw, with a very bumpy ride and a fair bit of noise in most conditions. On the flip side, it's an absolute thrill to drive!
Feels good being 6ft3. Perfect balance between tall and average. Enough to be a head taller than most men, yet still fit in a car. In my case a Passat.
A really cool video. The scenery's nice and the car's really nice. You made really good points about it. I like the fact that you didn't focus on the weight too much and that you realise it can make for a really sweet sports tourer. That's really objective and unbiased. As far as Corvette goes, yes - it's a better sports car. But it also sends a different message. The Z4 is like a dentist's sports car, whereas the Corvette is either for a younger driver (the type that usually has no money, fck life) or for someone curing a middle age crisis.
I think it's great that you don't ride the bumpers of cars you catch up to... you do what I do and "agh traffic," but keep back. Great video as usual too.
I will say, the exhaust and extra hp you get with the IS models makes the car so much better! My family owns a 335is convertible, and the sound is sooooo much better than just a regular 335i. The Z body though is very sexy!
TheSmokingTire You can buy and install the performance exhaust, PPK, or 313 wheels through your BMW dealership. However, the parts are more expensive than buying an 335is/135is from factory. E: meant to reply to the first comment.
Got the chance to drive one of these with the 7 speed dual clutch for about 15 mins this pst week. It's pretty quick. It's a really nice comfortable car and the dual clutch had great paddle response. I was really impressed. Not a lightweight, but I'd take one if I could afford it.
Cool that your from CT also Matt, I'm 16 from Avon and only head to Greenwich for the Concours d'Elegance but I might have to take a search for these roads one day. California is probably sweet but a nice New England fall drive with the leaves changed is something special
Enjoyed the video. The new one take format is great, lower costs so more videos. The important part is we get to hear your impressions of the car, I can live without fancy editing. I'm not sure how pricing works in the USA for these cars but in the UK the Z4 competes with the SLK and Audi TT. The Porsche is a much more expensive car to buy and run.
For 25k I can either buy a miata ND or a used 2010(ish) BMW z4. Which one should I choose? Includes reliability, daily Drive ability, fun factor, handling and interior. Which one is Better?
Bryan Kendall Yes while that is true, I struggle to see why BMW would care about the fact the aftermarket has better options for the N54. Seeing as they've purposely locked down their ECUs now, it would make the most sense to quickly transplant the N55 into the Z4 rather than using the old motor. Also, people have finally gotten around to cracking the new ECUs so it'll be a joy to see what will be done to the new engines in the future.
Bryan Kendall You need more than just a tune to make 375whp with an n54 or n55.. my n55 is just a touch over 380whp with bolt ons, not bad for an 'unsupported' ecu. As more of them come off warranty, you'll see the n55's eclipse the older motor.
Rowdypilot Never once did I mention wheel horsepower. I'm talking about crank horsepower because some people on here don't know the difference. JB4 N54 will dyno at about 350whp on just a tune which is around 400hp at the crank. An N55 with JB4 will only dyno around 310whp.
Again, excellent to see you on roads I know. Really fun to see CT15. If you're in town for the holidays, my brother just picked up a 2015 WRX. You could give him a lesson on how to drive stick! I've been trying to pass on what I learned with my time at Limerock, but something is falling short. I drive a lowly B7 A4 3.2, but there's an '89 targa in the stable, too (that my dad and I fixed up. OEM parts; don't get too excited). Might have to push start it. I know car swapping is more of the kind of thing you do on /DRIVE out in California. But hey, I think it could be fun. Bonus: I'm actually a full-time professional photographer/videographer--would be glad to help out. It'd really make the bro's year if you gave him a lesson (read as "Christmas miracle").
The problem I have is that the Z4 is nearly $80k CAD for the "good" version, the 35is. $80k can buy a lot of car, and half that price opens up the door for a whole slough of roadsters. Not to mention $80k is AMG/M series money... If you're buying a Z4 it's because you REALLY want a Z4.
Does this Z4 have the M adaptive suspension? By the look of the ride height I presume it doesn't. It does make a slight improvement, but in the end it's still a heavy car. I have the Z4 with the older NA straight 6 (great engine though), it's down on power, but it's 100kg (220lbs) lighter than the 35i. Plus it is (was) cheaper in the first place, because I would rather buy a Porsche, if the price was similair.
Lovely breakdown as usual Matt, your One-Takes beat most of the drivel that pass around UA-cam as "Reviews/Test drives". On that note, why in gods name was today's video so Compressed/Pixelated :C?
I would think the competition is more like the merc slk and boxster instead of the vette, atleast in terms of performance and "type" of car if you know what im saying
I drove a z4 4banger with the turbo and 8 speed zf. I enjoyed it but I can never see myself owning one. It was fun to slide around a bit and listsen to it gargle in sport mode, but just doesn't seem like a car i'd want to drive all the time. Feel like it'd get boring after awhile. Plus the huge learning curve for working all the electronics in the car sucks as well. But I know that's a BMW thing
Cool, but the weight... You can almost feel it where you did a launch from full stop. My opinion is that if you want a "cheaper" sports car without massive horsepower it has to be light.
thedon008 More CEOs live in Greenwich than any other town in the US. The median income in Greenwich is $93,000, or about double the median salary nationwide.
thedon008 I'm from Greenwich, by body bag he means those cross-body man purses, exemplified here: www.amazon.com/U-S-Polo-Assn-Greenwich-Cross/dp/B00HEFMKX4
Towards Stephanie is having not because of the aluminium or as you would say illuminum roof it is heavy because of the stiffer chassis it has because the roof provides no structural support so to peep integrity of the vehicle in a rollover you have steel roll over bars Behind The Occupants plus the a pillars a reinforced steel I just keep down to a heavy chassis turn it down a little in weight certainly makes the car a lot safer kind regards Tieme 🤓
bassoonistfromhell the retractable hard top is supposed to be one car for both purposes, unfortunately the actual result isn't as good (to me) as either of those options.
Themelis Pikos They are a little small for me, but cool. I wouldn't want one though, because I don't like cars you really have to kick the shit out of to enjoy.
TheSmokingTire It's just the compression of the video. Those parts that are moving by fast are rendered with more fuzziness to make the file size small.
it was going the opposite direction. it doesn't count :) telling someone to stop lying implies they do it all the time. i've been following Matt, here and on Drive for quite a while and i can't count anytime he has done.
ah, see most times in text sarcasm is implied along with a ;) as i didn't see one i just thought you were another YT troll being pedantic. sorry for the criticism :)
i feel like you definitely get pulled over a lot. considering you haven't had your license suspended, would you consider posting a video giving advice to people with speeding tickets?
Karm Bhatti Of course they are. But it's not just about more views: it's about budgets. A "normal" video, like the ones you see on /DRIVE and sometimes on TST costs, at an absolute minimum, $1800-2000 because you have to pay cameraman, editors, maintain your equipment, buy fuel, food, etc. It's four people for 15 hours a day on location, then another 20-30 hours of editing. At current pay rates for free videos, you'd need to guarantee 450,000 views just to break even financially. There are very rare occasions where that is possible, hence, losing money on every video. This is a business, not a hobby, and working that hard for negative money would get you laughed at in any other business in the world. A One-Take film takes me (Matt) 15 minutes to shoot, 15 minutes to edit, and 15 minutes to upload. I use under $1000 worth of gear that I can carry and operate completely by myself. So maybe the video only gets 50,000 or 80,000 views, but every time I get up and go to work, it's profitable, because the pretty films that we make for Drive +, we get paid for. Make sense?
TheSmokingTire So this is what TST will be now One takes? Any thoughts of doing a Patreon fund where if you get X amount of dollars per month fans will get one full old style video here? And if your goal level isn't reached you still get the money but nothing changes on your end.
***** We will still make pretty videos here, but only if there is a budget for it. For instance, we're going to New Zealand in January to make a bunch of pretty films, courtesy of some kind lads developing an auto industry game/app called 'automation'. They are paying our costs, and in exchange we promote their app, and we make pretty films. But Anything that costs money has to be backed by money, otherwise it's a hobby not a job.
I have this car and have put 60K on it I use it as an everyday car. I love it. I like feeling my car so driving in Florida its nice to have nimble car thats small and agile cus these idiots cant drive. I could have bought a boxter, but this car is great. the suspension is stiff like my dick for this car and you can do better with the gear box, but still its fun to drive and its actually reliable. If you want a fun road car thats bad ass and wont break down on you no matter how hard you push it I would say this is your car.
So its defiantly more of a normal persons sports car, and not some much a real hard enthusiast car? I too would probably have the boxster over this, but like you said, it doesn't seem like a bad car at all.
twinscoupe haha calm down the n54 puts down not more than 250 to wheels stock. and dont bother aruguing with me as i own one and have dynoed it multiple types stock and tuned.
TheSmokingTire At 6'2" im so glad when you and Mike Musto talk about sizes of cars for big dudes. Why does just about every other auto jurno seem like midgets.
matt next time your in CT please take my car for a good spin. 89 240sx with a 02 chevy 5.3L v8, poredt and polished heads, oversized valves, hooker long tube headers, 3inch y pipe, and 3 inch straight back going to a flow master 40. if your interested shoot me a PM and ill give you more info on the car
These 'One-takes' are UA-cam's best addiction.
Bruno Oliveira right
I'm not a particular fan of rural areas, but I must say that watching this video, I did not care one bit about what you were doing with the vehicle. The scenery was just too amazing. And the fact that you'd only see other cars every now and then made it somewhat eerie, but a good kind of eerie.

I believe the engine in E89 Z4 35i is N54, not N55. No factory Z4s come with an N55 engine as of 2015.
only the 35is
@@butt5810 both got the N54
Correct all of the 35i are N54.
Always fun to watch you tear through these back roads with beautiful scenery
Seriously jealous of these roads, and the scenery. Beautiful
This is one of the most highly underrated cars in the last 20 years. The 3.0L TT N54 is a beast and without engine upgrades, can be comfortably pushed to 450bhp with an upgraded ECU tune, larger intercooler, and a bigger turbokit.
I am a Z4 3.5i owner (manual), and this review is true. Lovely car (shape, feel, confort, engine, trunk space), however
slightly overweighted.
As a consumer, that's what I expect BMW to work on...
By the way, I had the Z4 v1, and it wasn't so weighted, but the new one makes it back thanks to the amazing engine...(231 hp to 306 hp with more torque thx to the turbos)
Any regret?
Haha I knew less than a minute in when he said N55 engine I was going to scroll down and see a correction. It is indeed the beloved N54
That area looks amazing.
A manual transmission 'going the way of the dinosaur' ? Why is shifting your own gears a bad thing? Then as part of your "argument" (I have it in quotes because an actual argument relies on having valid points of ANY kind), you tell the other person to go kill themselves.
Get out of here you fucking millennial child. You evidently know NOTHING on the subject, so why chime in and make yourself look stupid?
Evan Baucke AHAHAHAHAHA. Let's remove a reliable effective system to save a tiny irrelevant portion of fuel (by the way, it doesn't actually affect it, pressing the throttle 5% less under acceleration will save you more fuel than this 'idea' ever would through the lifetime of a vehicle), which then gets completely negated by a single oil spill, which happen more frequently than your sickly mind can comprehend. No, fuck it, I'm done. You know, for a second I hoped maybe you were simply misguided, maybe I could explain something to you, but no.
You are a complete fucking buffoon, and should have his license revoked permanently. People like you with that kind of mental disability are a danger to the rest of us. You cannot be educated and have wasted enough of my time as is. Thankfully no one as dumb as you will ever be in a position to make the decisions.
sadly manual is going to be obsolete when hybrid and electric take over. unless they make manual for electric and hybrid but i doubt it.
Mouse Click There will still be an enthusiast market for regular vehicles, they cannot phase that out. If they do, I hope it's long after I'm dead. Just a shame future generations won't be able to experience what driving REALLY feels like.
enigmaPL Is it still possible to order this car in stick? I just checked out BMWUSA and wasn't really able to choose MT.

Feels good being 6ft3. Perfect balance between tall and average. Enough to be a head taller than most men, yet still fit in a car. In my case a Passat.
I'm 6'2 and I can't see how 6'3 is the perfect balance lol
studio2062films Well I'm taller than you for one lol
***** I enjoy being 6'2.5".
6ft, have a hard time fitting in small cars, under 6ft is a perfect height for car enthusiasts, lol.
Fuck all of you man mores. I am only 5"10 at least I can fit in a s2000 lol
A really cool video. The scenery's nice and the car's really nice. You made really good points about it. I love the Z4 M coupe! Awesome car! I have a 08 335i w/jb4 tune and let me tell you, it hauls ass now.
Neighbours must be complaining Matt is back in town....lol
One Take's are awesome.

I'm from Litchfield CT and we have some pretty good roads going up from Danbury CT- Salisbury CT (near Limerock). RT 7, RT63,RT 109, fun roads.
TheSmokingTire The Z4 has the N54 still not the N55. I'm not sure why, but it does.
The N54 is known to make more power. With a tune like JB4, it'll make 375hp easy. The same cannot be said for the N55.
Bryan Kendall I'm going to go out on a limb here and say at least 50% of TST's regular viewers know the difference between WHP and BHP...

Hey Matt, I appreciate that you produce these videos on your channel due to the fact I hate that drive has drive plus bullshit.
Thank you.
The problem is, you want the Z4 to be an S2K with a bit more low end torque.
i really like this car i know for guys that's not a popular idea, but it was a real road presence.
ha, the road i grew up on is one of Matt Farah's favorite roads to drive on. Cool.
The problem I have is that the Z4 is nearly $80k CAD for the "good" version, the 35is.
$80k can buy a lot of car, and half that price opens up the door for a whole slough of roadsters.

Hey Matt, speaking of BMW straight 6 sounds, I wonder if you've driven a E46 ZHP w/ stock exhaust; if so, what do you think of that sound?
crazzy88ss All those E46's (except the M) sound exactly the same to me.
TheSmokingTire Fair enough. The ZHP was what would have been the 330is. Different cams/exhaust. Just curious. Thx for the response.
Great review Matt where the link where you flog the Z4M?
More of this!!
I like these roads, saw them for the first time in the green jag. Much better than those canyon toads you are usually on.

Greenwich! Home of the Body Bag! Those CEOs are gangstas!

thedon008 I think it might be becaust rich gangsters and and shit might live there
thedon008 I'm from Greenwich, by body bag he means those cross-body man purses, exemplified here: www.amazon.com/U-S-Polo-Assn-Greenwich-Cross/dp/B00HEFMKX4
TheSmokingTire What would you consider the top 5 roads in CT?
I'll have if you dont want it, got the right colour interior I love too!
Towards Stephanie is having not because of the aluminium or as you would say illuminum roof it is heavy because of the stiffer chassis it has because the roof provides no structural support so to peep integrity of the vehicle in a rollover you have steel roll over bars Behind The Occupants plus the a pillars a reinforced steel I just keep down to a heavy chassis turn it down a little in weight certainly makes the car a lot safer
kind regards Tieme 🤓
Is there a coupe version of this? Or even better, a shooting break like the old Z3 coupe. That'd be cool.
bassoonistfromhell the retractable hard top is supposed to be one car for both purposes, unfortunately the actual result isn't as good (to me) as either of those options.
Not a track car, obviously. It can perform on the track, but it's not meant for it. This. This is what it's meant for. i like it a lot.
Do a review on the Honda S2000
Any thoughts on this car vs. a slk 55 of the era?
Is the video of him tracking the car on the paid part of drive?
What are your favorite roads in ct?
We should be expecting a new Z4 soon,no?I'm sure they'll address the weight?
assassin72 doubtful, unless they decide to ditch the hard top.
what road is this in Greenwhich Matt?
Also, if you compare this car to the TT or the SLK, I give it a win for the Z4 no problem,,, more presence, more fun, less conventionnal.
is the "chief two seat competition" of a Z4 really a corvette............? That doesn't seem right
th3trueking how many other 2-seat, convertible sports cars are out there for $55-65k?
TheSmokingTire I would think the boxster/ cayman, slk, and audi tt would be more comparable.
Max Sohl I mentioned the Boxster, and completely forgot the SLK and TT exist.
TheSmokingTire
Audi TTS maybe, if you can get it in the US?
SaKuLification
I am pretty sure we get the TTS
Hey Matt, how would you compare this to the E85 Z4?
How do you feel about S2000's, Matt?
Themelis Pikos They are a little small for me, but cool. I wouldn't want one though, because I don't like cars you really have to kick the shit out of to enjoy.
TheSmokingTire
No replacement for displacement.
MrGovenator1 except boost. boost is just as fun in its own way.
TheSmokingTire Yes, yes it is.
Is this filmed in HD ?? Can't figure it out....
the 1080p stream works fine on our end....
TheSmokingTire It's just the compression of the video. Those parts that are moving by fast are rendered with more fuzziness to make the file size small.
Oh yeah, this is why.... :(
Which track are you taking the Z to?
Pininfarina Zagato we filmed it at Monticello Motor Club
one of those channels where you press like before you watch the video
You lied Matt. At 3:59 I definitely saw a car on that road. Stop lying please.
it was going the opposite direction. it doesn't count :) telling someone to stop lying implies they do it all the time. i've been following Matt, here and on Drive for quite a while and i can't count anytime he has done.
See, if you personally knew me that would create a huge difference :) I was trying to be funny/sarcastic
ah, see most times in text sarcasm is implied along with a ;) as i didn't see one i just thought you were another YT troll being pedantic. sorry for the criticism :)
i feel like you definitely get pulled over a lot. considering you haven't had your license suspended, would you consider posting a video giving advice to people with speeding tickets?
William Levine no need for a video: get a lawyer. They cost money because they win.
pretty pretty car
i love driving down porchuck. he was whipping it
Matt...you've gotta have the best job ever!... Drive awesome cars and... yeah write some stuff...then drive some more..busy...busy...lol..nice...
Jersey Plates?
I live right next door in new Canaan
combatarmsmaniac beautiful area.
Definitely over 35 Matt shame on you lol xD
370z vs z4 ?
areyouyo z4 without question
Yeah I was disappointed with the legs room. After I was impressed with the room in the slk I was expecting the same or maybe abit more.
Matt's parents are doing quite well.................................
are these one take video's really getting you more views? and how much longer till a an actual video comes out? lol
Make sense?
TheSmokingTire Absolutely it does.
TheSmokingTire
So this is what TST will be now One takes?
TheSmokingTire
That Automation game is actually pretty nice, provided you are into that sort of nerdy shit. (I am)
I don't understand how you drive so fast and not get pulled over
Seat heaters is something you turn off :D
The real trouble with driving seriously fast cars is you are always behind somebody who is pootling along!
300hp from a twin-turbo inline 6. Why.
Because it's way more than that in reality. One of the most underrated engines on earth.
Maglia Rosa i have a 335i with the same engine and she is a dream to drive enough power to wet yourself.
Cory Stansbury very very true , closer to 330 at the crank and more like 300 hp at the wheels
twinscoupe haha calm down the n54 puts down not more than 250 to wheels stock. and dont bother aruguing with me as i own one and have dynoed it multiple types stock and tuned.
Why put a clutch in a grocery getter?
What groceries like a bottle of milk? I'm not sure you could fit much else in the trunk
lol Its got no use at all. No strong points at anything!!!
Too bad they don't make the shoe-shaped hatchback anymore :(
Great video, I love my Z4 manual! Great driving cars (I have a few vids on my channel if anyones interested?)
review a 2004 r32..
Zee four?.. it's Z four
TheSmokingTire At 6'2" im so glad when you and Mike Musto talk about sizes of cars for big dudes. Why does just about every other auto jurno seem like midgets.
Aren't u going too fast for that kind of residential neighborhood??
Its a shame that BMW took the z4 away from the sports car segment! Porsche is running away in this marketplace with the boxster!
B to the M to the W...
'turn off, turn off'...I say that all the time! 300hp...I would MUCH rather a Golf R, Focus RS, or a Boxster.
Well, it isn't very good value. The Corvette is by far the best value when talking sports car. As far as i know.
You drove by my friends house!
its alright. its feeling dated though. feels a generation behind most other bmw's
matt next time your in CT please take my car for a good spin. 89 240sx with a 02 chevy 5.3L v8, poredt and polished heads, oversized valves, hooker long tube headers, 3inch y pipe, and 3 inch straight back going to a flow master 40. if your interested shoot me a PM and ill give you more info on the car
6'7" and a 40" inseam. It ain't gonna' happen.
NuclearGrizzly you need a Corvette or a Porsche.
TheSmokingTire I don't fit in the C7 but I have three 911's :-)
NuclearGrizzly yeah the C7 is a bit tighter than C5 or C6.
TheSmokingTire
I didn't fit in the C5 or C6 either. I guess I'll just have to keep settling for 911's
NuclearGrizzly
I think you need a MX5
