Milky Way Canola Tree using 35mm Lens
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- One thing I love to find is a single tree sitting in a flowering canola field. Well it may sound like an easy thing to do, but I can assure you that is not the case.
Added to that is the fact that I need one facing in the right direction to feature the setting milky way galactic core in the background.
So in this video I'll show you how I shoot the milky way incorporating a canola tree using a 35mm lens.

Great shot Richard. I just did about 600 miles of scouting myself last month. Found three new locations. Will be back next new moon. Also, very good video production, as usual!
Thanks a lot Tim, always appreciate your comments.
Richard, great video as always! I can’t begin tell you how much your approach has shaped my thinking, planning & execution. In the States we have a saying, perhaps there also - KISS - “keep it simple stupid” or maybe it should be “keep it stupidity simple”. You practice & present such a simple, straightforward & eloquent approach that yields absolutely stunning results. Thank you for all your work & sharing & caring attitude, it is sincerely appreciated. Oh & by the way, “Bob was my Dad, not my uncle!” 😄 Thanks again for all you do! Bill Schone
Thanks so much for your very encouraging comments Bob . .yes it's an Aussie saying.
@@nightscapeimages.richard it's also a British saying. ☺
Great images Mr Richard. You enjoying your cuppa and rum balls, me having beef noodles on this rainy day in Sichuan . Great way to start a day. It's all about preparation, planning. It's so funny that expression you offen use Bob's your uncle might not be PC anymore. You might have to change uncle to aunt or maybe it. 😁😁😁(just joking) . Thanks for great video!!!!!!!
Haha, yes well political correctness is something that has gone way overboard in my opinion Milorad.
Beautiful composition as always Richard. I was looking at the 40mm lens as compared to the 35mm to ad to my bag. Now I am wondering. I am getting the 50mm f/1.8 S to use also.
I love that 50mm f1.8S lens John .. it's stunning.
I’ve just ordered the sigma art f1.4 40mm. Absolutely tack sharp lens.
Stunning image Richard. Really looking forward to capturing some canola crops this year myself, if the weather would just co-operate 🌧️. Love the simplicity of that iOptron 🤔.
Thanks a lot Dominic. Yes I love the tracker. I think technology will enable tracking to be even more simple moving forward. I can't wait to see what you can come up with.
It is always such a pleasure to watch your enthusiasm combined with your way how you convey your skills to your audience. Great work again. Thank you.
Your comments are very much appreciated, thank you.
Awesome again Richard, you are my go-to for processing tutorials and the sky in this video is one of the best that you have done, it really is very good. Are you going to make a processing video from these images ?? i know things are improving with the sky and subject masking and the Exterminator plugins. That Noise Exterminator is very good btw. Edit: just found your video from August the 7th :) You seem to shoot at a very high ISO even 3200 for me seems to much ?
Thanks for watching Spike. I love the RC Astro stuff
Belíssima Photo, this 35mm lens gets delicious details in the photos, I already ordered one and it should arrive next week.
Thank you Richard.😀
You're very welcome Mario.
Absoluty great video. Always learning new things to apply it. What a beautiful scenery you travel. Thanks for it!
Thanks as always for watching Luis
Great image Richard. I'm heading down the bottom of Yorke Peninsula in a couple of weeks so I'm hoping for lots of canola plus clear skies. I'll be away for a week so should get at least one nice night I'd hope.
Great video as always and thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks a lot Mark. I'm sure your trip down to Yorke Peninsula will be fantastic.
I think this type of composition is my favourite Richard. Absolutely beautiful! 🤩
Thank you as always Lisa.
Very nice Richard, as you know I’m a hugh fan of the longer focal lengths, came up amazing with the canola contrast :) mmm tease with the rum balls as well :(
Thanks a lot Alan, yes those rum balls get me every time ..!!!!
Hi Richard, nice canola field and Milky Way core. Saw your milky way core have this reddish colour I assume is due to the H-alpha. Is this a modification to the sensor or additional filter add on? Thanks.
Thanks for watching. Yes the h-alpha is a permanent modification to the camera. I don't add any filters. And it does capture more red/magenta nebulas.
Amazing capture Richard. Love how you share your rumball experience also lol
Haha, well I can't really resist them Melinda.
Beautiful shot! If I wanted to shoot something similar and wanted the bloom, or the flowers, to appear a little softer or more hazy, like they do in daylight, would it be best to maintain a wider aperture, or use a ND filter, or combination of the two? ...without it looking artificial....
Thanks Derek. I probably wouldn't use an ND filter at night. To be honest it's not hard to get soft flowers at night . .all you need is a very light breeze for example.
Great shot Richard, you're right about the simplicity, it is beautiful, like the result from the 35mm lens too. P. S glad you got your rum ball again, lol
Thanks as always Suzie
Great video Richard, canola season is magic for foregrounds. Hopefully will get up to the Barossa and Clare this weekend for some of the same.
Good on you Eric. Thanks for watching.
Richard thanks for using the 35mm. I also grab the 20mm most of the time now.My area has tons of light pollution so it a bit harder to scope out the sites. Just when you think you have great spot at night bright lights everywhere. Just returned for camping had a clear night dark bortle 4 . I only had one battery:( :( forgot to pack the charger and the spare. The only good that came of this is that the second night was smoke in the air from forest fires . Love the video keep it up. cheers Frank
Good on you Frank. Always appreciate your comments.
Love it as I've been in search of much the same things and access of course is often a problem. By chance did you use a larger torch to make up for the distance? I ran into this problem a few weeks back where the light just seemed a bit weak. Worked around it by moving up closer to the tree and grass, but it meant doing a lot more shots. Also, I noted that you are using the Z6 modified for the MW, are you using the same camera for the foreground?
Thanks for watching Rob. I used my normal torch for this .. but sometimes you do need more light. In this case I did use that same camera for all the shots.
.....👏👏👏beautifully shot, that canola is a bugger to shoot, spotted you last nite at whitenite but i was busy shootin the duet or i would of introduced myself...nxt time.
Fantastic, it would have been good to chat .. never mind.
Beautiful pic as always. Thanks
This time you set the tripod for tracking in the same position as the foreground shoot?
I am just thinking how you can blend it in as the tree is the main obstacle in the sky. pls advise.
No I actually moved a bit over away from the tree .I didn't really explain this well in the video.
Another beautiful shot Richard, love the way the 35mm frames up👍
Yes so do I Dennis, thanks for looking.
Great image Richard. I honestly think 35mm is one of the best focal lengths for astro. It just gives you so much more detail.
Yes it sure does give great detail. I'll try to use the 35mm whenever I can.
That's a beautiful shot. It's time to dig out my old 35mm prime!! I'm glad to see you're back on the rum balls!!
Haha, yes the rum balls are still high on the wish list.
loved the image Richard, thanks for reminding again about thinking of post processing while shooting. Last time, i was in hurry and dint get good ambient photo to replace sky.
Yes it makes all the difference Sarvesh. Thanks for watching.
Yay Rum balls are back 😁
I want to mention that i scout quite a lot via satellite images because of too less time and it is cheaper and better for the climate.
this online scouting is usually the first step. Mostly I visit the places in day time before I go for the night shots
Do you use satellite images for location finding?
btw great image Richard 😉
As always I very much appreciate your comments my friend. Love the rum balls.
Excellent work Richard. Thanks for sharing the experience with us!
I really appreciate you watching, thank you.
Just beautiful again Richard You need to make a video showing your mistakes so as poor normal humans would feel better .
Haha, well I reckon I have shown a few of those over the years Jeff . ..Thanks again for watching.
What are you tracking stars with? Have you made any videos on your tracking process? Your videos are great and I learn so much!
Hey Jamie, thanks so much for watching. I'm using the ioptron Sky Guider Pro with the ipolar camera for locating the south celestial pole for alignment. I've made a few videos where i mention it a bit. See here: ua-cam.com/video/oiUvBwCrBmQ/v-deo.html or this one: ua-cam.com/video/7lNpfoZMoR0/v-deo.html
Love it mate, I shot my first Canola pano a few days ago. The yellow is just incredible.
Can't wait to see that shot John. It seems really full on this year ... and early. Hope you're well mate.
Beautiful image as always Richard.
A big hug and good job.😉
Thanks so much for watching my friend.
G'day Richard. Outstanding result as usual. Thanks mate.
Really appreciate that John.
Another beautiful creation Richard, and good to see you back on the rum balls :-)
Thanks a lot Les. Yes can't resist the rum balls mate.
Another beautiful sky image, Richard!
Thank you so much for watching Gary.
Another great video!
Thanks for continuing to inspire us to explore!
You're very welcome Calvin. Thanks for watching.
That's another print worthy photograph. I like the point that you made about planning your shots with post-production in mind. I learned the necessity of that the hard way.
Yes I think I did as well. Appreciate your comments.
Cracking result Richard, I love that tracked sky 👏. Did you move to the side a little in order to get the tree out of the frame?
Thanks heaps Paul. Yes I did move to the side to get the clear shot of the sky away from the tree.
Great shot Richard. The 35mm lens is so good at bringing the Galaxy right up close to dominate the image. The tree looks like it has quite a bit of character also with a missing branch and twisted limbs. 😁👌👍
Yes I think you're right Geoff. Most trees have some individual character. . especially in the middle of a canola field.
Beautiful image and great video as always, Richard! When you pulled out the rum ball, I thought it was a Timbit for a moment (Canadian thing)!! One question: when you are shooting your sky images first, is it the same composition (tree, foreground included), or do you step to the side so that you can got more sky in the image? Cheers!
I usually step aside so the tree isn't in the foreground. It makes the editing and blending a lot easier.
perfect, thanks!@@nightscapeimages.richard
Oh man, that's a real beauty, right there. I haven't been out in a while. Busy with work and too tired to go out after. Gotta wait for the moon for couple weeks here now. At first, I wasn't crazy about the deep sky look Milky Way but it's really growing on me and I can really appreciate these too now. Plus I can appreciate mixing stuff too, rather than taking the same type of photos over and over again, so I've come to enjoy these too. Might think about getting a tracker down the road, myself. Real nice at 35mm too. Pulls it right in nice.
Thanks so much for watching. It's amazing how we consider a 35mm focal length to be "Deep Sky" but it certainly gives us that look.
@@nightscapeimages.richard Well, what I mean by "deep sky" is the very long, tracked exposure that pulls in so much more out from within the Milky Way. The 35mm and longer focal lengths of course compresses and brings objects in closer and makes it look nice and large, which is super cool.
Wonderful shot Richard. I find that every time I'm driving somewhere these days, I am trying to find potential compositions to shoot. I continually check the compass to be certain it would be the right position and look around for potential sources of light pollution. Sadly, there is quite a bit near my location, but I keep plugging along because I know I will find it when I least expect. My biggest challenge is time. When I have the time the weather or moon are not cooperative. When conditions are perfect it always seems to occur on one of my workdays. I can't wait for retirement already so I can go out and shoot at will. Until then I'll keep watching and learning. 😀
Yes all of those issues are common to many people Frank .. but you have the determination and so you'll get there my friend.
Canola is great for Photography. Having lived on the Yorke Peninsula amongst grain crops, flowering Canola was also a great background for photos with the wife and kids or anything else. Now that I live in the Northern Rivers of NSW and with adult children, sunflowers are the replacement. Although, Sunflowers were a Summer crop in some parts of the Yorke Peninsula due to what they added to the ground for Winter grain crops. Great work that you do.
Thanks so much for watching Michael. Yes all good foreground subject matter for sure.
Awesome shot! I dont think ISO really matters as those cameras are ISO invariant anyway, so I usually shoot at ISO 640 (and with low ISO you also preserve dynamic range)
Very true Matej. The only thing is that sometimes it's really hard to be sure you've got the details you want . .or perhaps good focus because the image may be underexposed. But I don't see a lot of difference between about iso500 and 1600 to be honest. A lot of these ideas are based on theoretical lab charts. . So while the theory is sound, I prefer actual experience out in the field.
@@nightscapeimages.richard I absolutely agree with you on that :)
Absolutely gorgeous image, Richard! I have been planning to experiment with the 35mm for night sky images as I do like that different perspective. You can get a lot more presence in the image. Thanks for sharing! Bob
Thanks a lot for watching Bob. The only problem is a more limited range of compositions. . but I think it's worth the effort.
The ipolar scope? I believe that's what I have. I have to hook it up to my laptop just to use it - is there a way to use a phone?
No not at this stage. . but it would be good if they could do that.
Hi Richard a great informative video and a beautiful image as always.
Thanks as always Steve
Another very helpful video Richard, simply explained but straight to the point. It is always good to watch your videos, you really are a great educator, you share all the information we will need to get out there and take great night images. Thanks again Richard, I for one really appreciate all your hard working effort, thank you 👍
I'm really pleased you find the videos helpful Duncan. I appreciate your support.
Now I have to get half a dozen rumballs, dammit!
Haha, yes indeed Barry.
Love it, Richard. Question, the Milky Way is almost horizontal. I am not sure I have seen that up here in the US. Is that something that is unique to where you live or could I see it here where I live at certain times of the year. Thanks.
Thanks so much for watching Nyall. Unfortunately you'll never see this view in the US. Southern hemisphere only.
@@nightscapeimages.richard Thank you. That answered my questions. Take care.
Love your videos. Still gives me inspiration 😍
I'm pleased to hear that Andreas.
Magnificent video again Richard, I’d love to be able to do one of your face to face courses.
Thanks a lot for watching Adam, really appreciate your support my friend. My 2023 on location workshops are selling out very fast .. !!!
@@nightscapeimages.richard I bet they are. It’s a tough gig going all the way down to Vic from NQ.
Stunning Image, Richard.
Thanks very much for watching Victor.
I just love the way the 35mm pulls the sky in closer to the tree!
Yes so do I Peter
Nice one great video as usual. Clear skies 🖖
Thanks so much Gavin. Always appreciated.
Hi Richard, stunning video and photo and I notice the 35mm is very good, have you ever comparised this lens versus another brands? I think this is the better one, you also? Greetings from Italy😊
I did also use a Viltrox 35mm f1.8 for Nikon Z. It's pretty good also. A while back I used a Sigma Art 35mm f1.4 which is also very good.
@@nightscapeimages.richard ...Without money problems wich is the better for you?
@@sergiovicenzino2754 I usually prefer the native Nikon 35mm Z lens.
@@nightscapeimages.richard thank you Richard. Clear skies🙂
Great video as usual. Surprisingly you passed up the fence post.
Haha, yes I did like that fence post ...!!!! Thanks for watching Bruce.
I liked it also. If it had been a gate it may have been too irresistible haha.
Richard 👏👏👏🤛 I absolutely love this image & very inspirational for exactly the Astro I love - amazing results with the 35mm & 50mm - compression 👍
Thanks so much for watching my friend.
do you feel safe being alone on the road to those rural areas? any strangers you ever met and felt threatened?
Thanks for watching Ambrose. These rural areas are the safest in the world. Much safer than anywhere near a city. I never see anyone out there at all.
@@nightscapeimages.richard great to hear that's safe. hope you will come to Queensland in the near future.
That is one hell of a pic!!! Well done
Thanks so much for watching Matt.

Thank you so much for watching Mohammad, really appreciated.
Morning Richard .. good to see you back on rum balls. I know the feeling of looking for a tree and a wind mill in canola fields. I spent 6 hours looking for it but no joy.. ended up finding silos .. great video as usual and perfect start to my weekend
