Thank you for talking about the cocoons, I never thought about it until I came across your videos. I was going to start out with 30 lbs of African night crawlers for $1000.00 . I ordered 4000 cocoons and they came in today. They are all set in their bins now,and It's just a waiting game. I'm so thankful to you. I"m starting the new hobby of worm farming in my garage as well.

How do you avoid other pests from the wood chips? I have an old pile but its loaded with insects and other things

@@ericburge9198 I actually bake my compost for a short period and will be doing a video on that shortly. It’s a tradeoff because it also kills the existing microbes so inoculating your bin with castings or other living material is important for the best start to your bin. Hope that helps and thank you for the support!

@@utahwormcompany I put mine in a 5 gallon buck with holes in the bottom then stuck it in a larger bucket full of rain water. That killed any living thing and now I've emptied the bucket on a plastic tarp to dry out a bit.

It blew my mind learning the other day that we are actually going through a world wide decline and shortage of worms and just like bees and frogs this is very much not good news and once these key things go completely outa wack we are in some serious trouble and I fear we are already beyond irreparable the most

Out of curiosity I was wondering it you have any local worms in your wood mulch pile. That’s why I haven’t used what we have in my bins.

@@brookeonyx6271 Hi there and thanks for the question! Yes we have the standard Canadian Dew Worms (Lumbricus Terrestris) and it is something to be aware of. However, they will not survive in the environment I raise my other breeds in, definitely too warm. So for me I have never had an issue. I know some people will microwave their compost to get rid of any unwanted organisms or eggs from other insects, for me that’s too time consuming and I like keeping any microbes alive for my worms bedding - the more composters in the bin the better. Great question!
