SV Definitely Maybe LOL. Well I usually have a few so I will be happy to share what we run into (the good, the bad and the ugly). Thanks for watching and sharing.
great box... I'm going to build one at some point...something I've seen done is filling a plastic freezer bag with the epoxy fillet mix then cut a corner as a tip and squeeze it in, then spoon it...love your videos...thanks
thoughts for the future, i know this is older 2017. but cut ur wood at corners on 45 degrees, save a ton of resin. or glue corners w/less wood, kicking time is though i do same
I've worked with fiberglass with no heat in the middle of winter and in searing heat in the dead of summer. Itd be perfect to be able to work in a walk in freezer then bring your project outside to harden.
Thanks, I am glad you liked it. I am hoping the more detailed content is what folks were hoping for. I was going to do all of this in one video. but at 20 minutes to get just the fillets in place, I figured I needed to at least break it into 2 parts.
Take it from a 40 year glass man, for corners where everything comes together, plain "Talcum Powder" and resin works as good if not better than microballoons or shredded mat
That is GREAT to know because as you can see from the finished product, I certainly lack the experience and skill in this area. Frankly doing this project led me to hire someone to do the deck work on the boat.
Question: Could you use spray foam for inside corners... Tape off corners Spray foam edges than let foam set up Than round over a thin piece of metal like band iron to get the round over radius Heat band iron with torch than heat trim the spray foam to exact round over Peel off blue tape and done Would that work?
Hopefully GasserGlass Will answer as well but I think it would. I have seen the boat yard use that expanding foam to fill a gab and then round it with a grater (not sure what else to call it) then glass over that for the contour.
Hi my name is Frank and I'm considering a buying this 32 foot Ketch and the deck is having some problem I haven't seen the boat yet I'm going on the 1st to see the entire boat but I could tell there was a one piece that had a hole in the in the decking and I'm very concerned about it even though the rest of the boat is fine but only by pictures so I'll be able to see it come the 1st or 2nd of July can I contact you and send some pictures and get some advice?
I am more than willing to have you do that. I am not an expert but I have certainly run into my share of deck issues and can provide some lessons learned and things I wish I had done to better negotiate my deal when I bought. Reach out to me at glhotka at SVDreamChaser dot com and we can trade contact info and what not.
What exactly kind of boat is Dream Chaser. Kinda looks like a Formosa. No where in your videos have I seen you describe what make of boat it is. Would live to know if you don't mind. Thanks.
+johnnyohness You have a good eye for lines Johnny. It is 51 foot Formosa. It’s the same year make and model as the one in Captain Ron, as a matter fact, when we bought her she was the same color green and all. Ifyou look at some of the older videos you’ll see what she looked like before this extensive refit. Maybe I should do another video talking about the type of boat why and how we got her and some of the work we put into her for people that are new to the channel. That’s a really good point. Safe sailing and thanks for watching
I think you may certainly be right. I may have to do this whole project again now that I actually have learned a LITTLE bit about Fiberglassing. This project actually was pretty crappy in hindsight, but it allowed me to get experience with the tools and materials without doing it on something valuable. All I really lost was a few bucks and some of my time.
I realize that this is an old video but what is the purpose of covering up your license plate? I mean after all you are driving around in public everywhere with the plate out there for everybody to see. I never understood this. I see other videos where people do this and it just makes no sense to me.
You probably have a good point and I’m sure it borders on paranoia. My thought was if somebody watches a Videos they also know about our boat they know the city we’re in. They might know my name from other contacts like Facebook and I just figured blurring out the license plate didn’t give them access to all of that information, where if I’m just driving down the road sure somebody can find see my license plate number but they don’t know my name or the city I live in likely. That all said I’m sure you’re right it’s probably just an overly paranoid gesture.
@@Svdreamchaser I appreciate the response. I wasn’t criticizing you I was just curious why people do this. Now I understand why you did. Great video by the way.
@@dikhurtz2406 oh I didn’t think you were hit it is funny how I had this reasoning in my head and it wasn’t till you asked the question that I even thought about the fact that everyone on the road sees my plates. Lol
GeorgeGraves thanks. Now that it is off if there. How the heck did you see it. Did you wait until it was further away and zoom in :). It sounds like something I would do.
could you please answer a question please or point me in the right direction.I am making a 3 box plywood sump filter to go under my 500gallon fish tank. I have to do this because there is 2 metal supports stopping me having one big box. they will be joined together with pressure plumming screwed together. I'm planning on fibreglassing all the tank/boxes inside and out.. how much time can you leave the first coats and fibreglass before you have to put the coloured wax coat on please.
+Leigh Shelton - In my experience you don't have to wait between the coats but this assumes a few specific things. First I am assuming that the polyester resin you are using does NOT contain wax. Sometimes it will be called a "Laminating Epoxy" This remains a little bit tacky and the final colored wax coat is what lets is fully cure free from air that allows it to harden. I hope this response is helpful. Also I can tell you from experience that 2 tanks joined together with either at least 2 lines between them is as good as a single tank. I did this on a previous boat for holding waste water (not the same material, but maybe even more important to avoid leaks :)) If you have pipes plumbing the 2 together, just be sure you have one low and high on the tank so that any pumps that suck water our or put water in allow air to pass between the tanks to avoid an air lock.
Sorry I may have misunderstood your desire. I assumed it was to do it all at one time quickly. It doesn't really matter. You can do all layers including the top wax layer at once, or you can also do layers of laminating resin with any* time between coats. I added the asterick because there may be some practical limits here. For example I wouldn't go months, but I have done weeks without issue. The only reason I wouldn't want to go too long is the "tacky" material may catch debris, dirt and dust that may not come out as easy when you are wiping the surface before your next coat. I don't know that for fact, but it seems logical to me.
Awesome! Thanks for showing mistakes!!! Helps prevent mistakes by knowing what is likely to be a mess up

Great idea. I have done that filling screw holes or pushing epoxy into small holes. I will have to try it on Fillets.
That sounds like a smart plan
Great video, thanks !!
Glad you liked it @BartVerHaagen

Great tips. I struggled with this project. It ended up being the reminder for me to hire this fiberglass work out on the deck of the boat. Lol
Just discovered this channel. I love it. Thanks for putting these out there. I subscribed!
Thanks David, I hope you are still enjoying the content and variety of the last couple of years. Back to Boat videos again in earnest. :)

Interesting. So was it all about the MEKP ratio adjustments depending on temperature?
good one gil :)

i enjoyed and appreciated the longer run time. i know doing the video must slow down the work a BUNCH. thanks for sharing.
Hey Gil. I wondered, have you ever forgotten your camera and remembered later? :) Thanks for all the effort you put into these videos!!
J B I have. Luckily I almost always have my cell phone with me and it takes surprisingly good video. Lol
Keep up the great informative videos! What do you use to edit your videos?
Thanks Ed. I used Final Cut Pro. I was using iMovie but there are quite a few options out there. Heck I see that SYZero uses something called FreeMake
I would have added the MEKP last for more working time

It would have been so much quicker, easier, and less expensive to use bodyfiller for the fillets.
