Sympathy for the Devil (Isolated Piano)

- Nicky Hopkins adding piano to Sympathy for the Devil. Enjoy!
It's been isolated from the tapes, but due to limitations in the studio some additional parts were dubbed as well, such as some vocals and guitar. I may try to remove them in the future using spectral editing or a source separation library.
A haunting reminder of how critical yet overlooked Hopkins' talent was to the success of the Stones' most important music.
Yeah he was tough man...played with them all.
I wouldn't say his contributions were/are overlooked at all. I mean, what else can you do? He was not part of the band. They mixed him up way up there; had his name on the sleeve, took him on tour. I think every band that had him for a while would have made him a member.
He is not overlooked at all. We all know him and the other guy, Ian Stewart if not mistaken, were there on many records from the RS.
Well said!
basically the record is Nicky Hopkins - end of!
Mr Hopkins was truly the greatest 🎹 pianist i ever heard in all my lifetime ❤this man was truly a genius and very gifted on that piano 🎹 WOW😮hes the reason this African American soul sister loves rock and roll music❤❤❤❤❤
Nicky Hopkins never forgotten. Best piano player I ever heard or saw.
As someone who plays piano I can say that he sounds like he's having a lot of fun
I've been practicing this song for years trying to capture the feel of it and I still don't come close, but it's definitely incredibly fun to play!
@@BenWakefield you have to drink a lil' bit to have the feeling right hehehe
@@BenWakefield you have to drink a lil' bit to have the feeling right hehehe
Elliott! that was a great post. Namaste. I play piano. I love Leon Russell and Billy Joel , Elton John etc. I can confirm under oath, that Nicky Hopkins (RIP) was having FUN impressing Mick Jagger and auditioning (in his mind) to be a supply piano player for the Rolling Stones. To be sure. God bless him.
@@BenWakefield is this multiple piano recordings overlayed over each other? It sounds so good I just can’t believe it’s one guy doing it all himself as a single piece
Genius. This piano holds the whole piece together and gives it edge and grit.
On the contrary, I think the piano gives the song legitimacy and solidity. That's why it does hold the whole song together. It remains constant in the E,D,A progression. I used to play it with guitar, but now I play it on piano and let the other instruments fall into place. Cheers.
Add Keith Bassline
and pacing of the rhythm section as a whole - his play provides melodic tempo overlaying Charlie Watts metronome licks...
Perfect comment...holds it together...Nicky killed it
The piano doesn’t hold this song together. It IS the song. Too bad the rest of the band ruined it with the pitiful “woo-woo” crap. Otherwise, it’s the best music I’ve ever heard.
I had the privilege to become friends with Nicky Hopkins in the late 70's. He was sort of shy and friendly - not at all what you would expect from a rock star. One of the nicest people you would ever want to know.
That's amazing!
Lucky you.
Same here, but later than 70's.
I think it was Art Garfunkel who once said he wished he could find a wife with the personality of Nicky ...
Wow...legend 👏👏🙏
This must be Heaven. The miraculous and genius Nicky Hopkins
YES !!!
I like it when a piano sounds like that. It's beautiful.
maby the best Stones-Song ever in my eyes. The Piano-part and Keith's bassline is the backbone of this masterpiece.
Love that “shot” sound at 3:01
No doubt, this is the greatest song ever composed by man. And a large part is because of the otherworldly piano playing by Nicky Hopkins
Not even the best Stones tune.
@@JimmyFranceable
Well...that's all subjective. But Hopkins was definitely the sixth Stone from Beggars Banquet to Goat's head soup. If you listen closely to Keith's playing from that time you can hear how he copied Nicky's riffs. Like how he plays a c chord with with an open D string then hammers an E on it. Or his guitar part on the Ya Yas version of sympathy.
The man was soul personified
@@JimmyFranceablefat
@@JimmyFranceabletop 5 easily
@@paidgovernmentshill_6950original post is even more subjective though lol. I don’t get why people can’t like something without diving headfirst into hyperbole and say this is “the greatest song ever made by man”. Like its not enough to just like something but its gotta be the best there ever was and its just tiresome
Without Nicky these stones records wouldn’t be what they are, Ian is also an important figure in the stones, from everything on Exile to Beggars banquet Nicky rip
always bugs me guys like Hopkins don`t get writing credit. Did Mick and Keith tell him what to play? I doubt it. So,if not he co wrote it,but never got credit and lots of cash.
How much was Nicky paid for this? Not sure I want to know...
@@bananaspiel1850 Well,Nicky has passed and I would be surprisd if anyone else would know or care.
@@MarkTarmannPianoCheck_it_out Hi. I was making a point. i understand how it works for sure.
@@MarkTarmannPianoCheck_it_out so,if I don`t point out every example,you ask me why I didn`t.
This has gospel chords , blues chords and just great command of the 88 keys.
Well done!!!
I've always marveled at Nicky's piano playing on this track. Thank you for posting Ben!
You're welcome! It's hard to choose a favorite, but the piano definitely stands out to me the most, and it's quite a privilege to be able to listen to it by itself!
I went to a small high school in Los Angeles called newbridge. They were only about 10 to 12 people in each grade. The school catered to an interesting group of children of famous people like ken Norton and Chyna Phillips and Burt Bacharach etc anyways most of us were using drugs quite heavily it was 1980-ish and the science teacher did a lot of alternative things like teaching us meditation anyways he brought his friend Nikki Hopkins in to talk with us I don't think any of us really understood how important of a musician he was. He talked to us about using drugs and getting addicted to heroin kind of a scared straight talk he was very friendly and kind and did it out of kindness
So interesting, this! Thank you much for sharing.
Nicky Hopkins played piano on John Lennons Imagine album and played the incredible piano part for the song Jealous Guy. Years later he ran into John and asked him why he was never invited back to play on his other albums or work with him. He wondered if John didnt like his playing. Lennon replied...'I didn't want to bother you cuz you seemed so busy working with The Stones'. At which Hopkins said he would have of course wanted to play with Lennon again and they both shook their heads over the misunderstanding.
Brilliant pianist - Everything he played was great !
What really made Nicky special IMO, was that he knew when to play, or not to play. When to hold back. He builds this track organically here. I know players who would have come in from Bar 1 with the way he is playing at around 3:30 mark. One sees that in many of the great players. I was listening to isolated tracks of Clapton o/d his lead guitar on Beatles 'Guitar Weeps" - half of the time he is chak-ing along, not doing anything. So cool.
Yeah. Like Nicky was always aware of the finished product, and what was needed and what was not needed. It's like he was thinking as an arranger, who was also jamming on the piano when the moments was right.
And I'll check out the Clapton isolated track on "While My Guitar . . " . I spent may a day listening to the entire White Album in the late 1960s.
He actually goes balls out from the first second in John Lennon's 'Oh Yoko.'
He had to stay out of the way of the guitarists so he syncopated it and kind of plays a bit ahead or behind the beat
I tend to be a guitar guy, but I have always loved the Piano Playing in Sympathy. Great to hear it isolated, which makes it clear why it is so riveting and powerful. What a great combination of talent these guys have/had. I am thankful for everyone that played a part in this Song (Writers, Performers, Engineers, Etc.).
After listening to this I have even more respect for Hopkins than I had before. I mean, the song actually has a very simple musical structure (you can hear that in the exposé, the first 50 seconds), it just thrives off what the musicians put into it (how he starts decorating his chords from 0:50, and especially from 4:12).
Also the intricate rhythms he builds right into his playing
His style of playing is/was something completely different from everyone else. Excellent!!! 👍💯🎶🎵 Wish we had this for She's a rainbow - and many others....
Superb, Nicky had such effortless talent & soul.
So much for unappreciated genius. I judge people by their friends and Mr. Hopkins had the best of friends. Thanks.
Amen.. so many tracks 👣 done for amazing artists.. un heralded by the clueless masses..
This is the best find I've had on UA-cam in a long time. I'm speechless... I found this tune and its artist.
The author of the video, you are the best.
I love how he's got the playlist on the wall next to him with the key they're in written on the side.
Saw it too.
Thanks - really great to hear this isolated. Stones keys players never got the respect for their contributions.
Thank you so much for this upload.
Saved for history.
Ese piano del Sr. Nicky Hopkins hizo de la canción un toque de suspenso, lo que su acompañamiento en la canción es maravillosa!
Yeah!
He sounds like he’s having a great time.
He plays the keyboard at the end of John Lennon How Do You Sleep (1971) which led me to this. He played with the Beatles and all four solo artists. He's mentioned by Ringo at the end of You and Me (Babe) (1973).
what a fucking gem!!!!
Brilliant Nicky Hopkins
I'm proud to say my piano style came from Hopkins.. then rounded out by Elton
Likewise! Plus some Leon Russell.
Same here! They were the best!
let’s jam, my guitar style came from richards and rounded out with pete townshend lol
So important to the sound of so many great bands and tracks
Oh m a a n !!! I loved it so much!! Am I allowed to re-listen!!? Wowza wowza wowza!! What a recording! Thanks Ben. Namaste.
Excellent! Now I can hear exactly what he played and try to replicate! Takes a lot of energy to keep that rhythm going through the whole song!
If you could do the same for 'Lovin Cup' I will think you are the best human in existence.
It just so happens that Loving Cup is my favorite song, I support this
I wish the track kept going at the end, he was killing it with the improv...
i jammed along as a teenager ... love Nicky and of course the Stones
I had forgotten Hopkins' collaboration with the Stones. An amusing example is a sort of basement tapes recording he did with Jagger, Wyman, and Watts along with Ry Cooder, called "Jamming with Edward." He also worked with the Beatles, George Harrison on his solo albums, with Jefferson Airplane and Quicksilver Messenger Service, to drop a few names. Very interesting to hear this piano track broken out. . . .
I’ve got the record album “jammin with Edward”
I have it, too. Original barely-played from the early 70s. Always dubbed them onto tape and then stored the vinyl. My youngest daughter has commandeered all my Who, Clash, Joy Division etc.
Always considered Nicky Hopkins a member of the STONES.......
The only band that Hopkins was actually a member of (recording and performing revenue, rather than just hired gun) was Quicksilver Messenger Service.
Jeff Beck Group (briefly)
Omg thanks for making this
Breathtaking
Always did like the piano track on that tune.
I love his impromptu work on the “Jamming With Edward” album.
I love that album cuz Ry Cooder is on it too
Nicky's playing on 'Highland Fling' is just the bomb!!!!! Marvellous!!!
thank you for this video which will normally not be found ,continues like this
Genius.
Check Nicky Hopkins with JGB in the mid 70s. Jerry covered a few Stones song.
Amazing - love it !
Una maldita obra maestra
One plus one, how to make a song with genious people
I was listening to This track Yesterday ,Nicky Made this classic "GREAT"...
Incredible.
The boy can play!
This is brilliant! Thanks so much
Best rock piano ever. Second only to Ricky don't lose that number
The Dan🔥
Thank you for posting this.
When I listen to this tune the keys stand out to me. Nuff said
The piano and the bass are so important yet so overlooked. This is their best track ever, by far. So complicated, so thick. Flagship of the Rolling Stones fleet. In this time period they were at the height of their musical proficiency, and their music was at the height of pop culture. Heavyweight champions of the world, in my opinion. Mean it. Get down.
Thank you very much for this. The photograph is amazing too. No special bench or anything thing. I wonder if the guitar is vibrating sympathetically and plugged in with the amp on. A friend of mine has the same guitar. The piano part is fantastic. The walk up part from A to E sounds wrong or off on the 2nd note but it isn’t. In 9th grade I got thrown out of a friend’s basement by his parents when we were rehearsing this song. He was the drummer I was the guitarist. Our singer and I were never ever to allowed in or around their house again. Sorry to say our friend went to Africa on a mission for his church and died from a bacterial infection in his heart while on his spiritual mission to convert. He was so talented on the acoustic guitar & drums.
Yeah, I wasn’t expecting that middle note on the walk up.
Guitar shown in pic is John Cipollina's from Quicksilver M.S. his effects are on the floor too. Taken at a show in Berkeley, with John and Nicky.
Yeah, it sounds weird when he hit’s the D#.
But Keith hits a D# on the bass part as well.
Sorry for your loss bro
I've stolen ... um ... I meaned borrowed more from Nicky Hopkins than I care to admit. Thanks for posting this.
I've listened to almost all the covers of this in youtube, and NOBODY could play at least 10 seconds close to Nicky's performance. They're all bad and lifeless copies, and they all start to fail at 0:40. People don't pay attention to the all the details of this masterpiece, that is like a song inside the main song.
I know several big name keyboarders from that time who hated him - because he was so good!
Jealousy
Richards hated Mick Taylor because Taylor's mastery eclipsed Richards.
Unbelievable piano. I would love to hear the entire track without any singing or “woo-woo”.
Same here. The "woo-woo"always bothered me, and I was a huge Stones fan, especially during Mick Taylor's tenure...
Greatest rock and roll ever written.
If you like Nicky Hopkins, you should really search for my upload of his Girl from Mill Valley, which I added vocals to.
Wow, never heard it and I'm from mill valley,
That is crazy good!
You should also do jigsaw puzzle, that'll be awesome!!
KR says he wrote several of the best early songs on piano
Soo good sounds fun to play fr
I love this guy
Excellent
get wild never felt so good
It’s kind of funny: The Rolling Stones were always a piano style blues band, but none of the members played.
Was spectralayers by Steinberg used?
See… Real piano players like Nikki Hopkins don’t need the foot pedals or use the sustain pedal.
Sorry beg to differ. I've heard both and keith play the piano.
@@charlielauffer7644 Yes, I have seen Keith play piano as well...
the stones were originally a 6 piece band and had a very fucking talented piano player name of Ian Stewart ('Stu'). he was booted from the lineup by their star-maker manager andrew loog oldham for looking too 'ordinary'. it's a testament to the great man that he stayed with them as their road manager and sat in on piano during songs that he liked for the rest of his life... i'm sure a quick google search will help you here. and you'll hear some great blues and boogie-woogie piano playing while you're doing it! all due respect to nicky hopkins, though!
Nicky Hopkins.. Top
Love it
Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long years
Stole million man's soul an faith
And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
Stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed Tsar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain
I rode a tank
Held a general's rank
When the blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made
I shouted out
Who killed the Kennedys?
When after all
It was you and me
Let me please introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached Bombay
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what's confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint
So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politnesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, mm yeah
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, mm yeah
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, mm mean it, get down
Woo, who
Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Aah yeah
Tell me baby, what's my name?
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name?
Tell me baby, what's my name?
I tell you one time, you're to blame
What's my name
Tell me, baby, what's my name?
Tell me, sweetie, what's my name?
Yes, we know the song. It’s why we’re here. Thank you.

All good. Yeah, some "wow" in the tape playback. But ALL GOOD. And that solid LH octave repetiton adds continuity. Nicky was thinking as an arranger would to make the track work.
