This is the REAL reason why Sully ditched in the river:
Because recovery from the river is a lot better than disembarking at LaGuardia.
(Teterboro is too far)
:D
True also the risk of flying over a city with dual engines failure at a low altitude is even more dangerous
Not meaning to make fun of Sully with this but it was an unpassable opportunity
This is aimed at the succccc airport

At Wellington in NZ the runway length is 2,081 metres and operates the 787, 777 and a350 internationally as well as its known for its windy takeoffs and landings so do that airport next
Our runway in Raleigh-Durham is 7,500 feet long and 10,000 feet long. The biggest flights we usually get are 777, 767, A350 on consistent basis. We do occasionally get British Airways 747s for the London Route on American. We actually are getting Air France now and should be getting an A330. One of the runways will get rebuilt and will be 11,500 feet long and starting sometime in the upcoming future, we will go to Beijing and Tokyo on Japan Airlines

As a New York local, I can say I have quite the love/hate relationship with this airport. Yes, the terminals were super outdated and small and poorly maintained. Yes the delays were frustrating. And yes, the weather in the whole tristate area is a mixed bag (it was 85 degrees F and sunny earlier today, now it's raining). But, this airport has some of the coolest approaches and departure routes, the short runways mean powerful departures and hard breaking which is fun and exciting, and the views of the city are breathtaking on a good day. My dad, who flies a Cirrus SR20 (just like you!) and I recently did a low approach on runway 31, flying down the east river and making the left turn over the baseball stadium in an awesome kai tak style turn just a few minutes after an A321, and it was such a cool experience. We also actually did a full stop landing at JFK and Newark. The one good thing about COVID...
By the way, I should mention La Guardia not having a subway stop is totally normal in the US. The only airports I know of in this country with any sort of public transportation link other than busses are JFK and EWR with the airtrain, which is a sad excuse for a shuttle from the parking lots more than anything else, and Boston and Washington DC might have some sort of train option to their airports. Oh and Baltimore has an Amtrak train that stops a few miles away. That's not a La Guardia thing, that's a USA thing. It sucks, trust me
Day 1 of asking to Swiss to use more the Dc-10 and the Md-11.
@Bende Mohl I actually prefer the DC-10, but we need to do everything to see wide-body trijets in this channel so, I agree with you.

ALSO Swiss: La Guardia sucks
He used maximum brakes and reverse thurst tho.
As a pilot for a major I think most of my peers want to try their at the legendary approach to 31-formerly the “Expressway Visual”.
On the positive side approaches to 04
Or 31 can give passengers a pulse quickening view of lower Manhattan, one if you haven’t seen is worth the hassles of the facility.
The idea of closing LaGuardia is a really bad, ill-conceived idea first discussed in the extremist New York Times.
LGA accounts for 30 million passengers arrivals and departures annually.
If each saves 20 minutes because of its proximity to Queens or the city, that’s 600 million minutes per year or 10 million hours. At $50 per hour for the average domestic airline passenger, that’s half a billion dollars a year in time value savings. For the average user of LaGuardia the hourly wage is likely to be higher. It’s proximity to Manhattan saves passengers 600 million minutes per year or 10 million hours in “times savings”.
Redirecting flights to Kennedy
or Newark is not a practical solution, either, since flights in and out of there are capped to prevent delays which are also common at those airports.
I would also suggest fares, even domestic routes, are typically higher at JFK than LGA.
So, let’s stop the talk about closing LGA. It’s as important to NYC and Queens as the LIE.

The scenery you have is the future renovation one
Funny thing- as a New York based frequent flyer, I actually prefer LGA to JFK and largely did before the renovations too. It's a very easy airport to use- my curb to gate time is usually somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 or 15 minutes with a checked bag (and PreCheck). The issues with delays are largely due to issues with the overall NY airspace being congested.
Terminal B was largely the reason why LGA has gotten as much hate as it did- that terminal was pretty objectively awful. However, the old facility has been mostly replaced, and the new one is beautiful. Delta is also my airline of choice, and terminals C & D are completely fine- even being mostly in their original form as they are now. The main reason for my LGA preference is that I absolutely enjoy using Delta's LaGuardia facility more than I enjoy using their JFK facility (T4 is a pain in the ass)
Swiss001: Why is LaGuardia such a dangerous airport

Yes landed in la guardia as a passenger on SouthWest airlines a few times. My was worst experience was early morning back in December last year we were being hit severely with wind gust coming from different directions just a few miles from the airport. The pilot literally slammed that 737 unto the rwy. Safely made it
First of all, it's LaGUARdia and not LaGARDia, and second of all, I love the airport, so you can't say that nobody likes it. And if you haven't been there, how can you possibly understand why? The new Terminal B is way nicer than parts of Frankfurt Airport, and actually many European airports.
Swiss: La guardia is a bad airport, JFK is better
JFK T7: Am I a Joke to you?

They’re renovating the airport. I’ve flown into LaGuardia with Delta, so I got to experience the first new terminal. They plan to add multiple new parking lots, more space in the buildings, the interior is very modern, and they’re adding ferry, and train services to the airport.
Well Terminal B was the first new terminal but yes it is very nice now.

You always say goodnight when in fact you are uploading in the very early morning :))
2:00 I though the biggest plane was like a DC-10. I can remember seeing pictures of American Airlines’ DC-10s at LGA many years ago. Even American Airlines Flight 96, which lost its cargo door after taking off from Detroit, was enroute to LGA via Buffalo, New York.
Dangerous airport:exists
Swiss001:another idea for the videos bingo!!!
When i was going from central park to laguardia, it took me 40 minutes to just exit the motorway onto the taxi drop off. IT WAS CHAOS i really hate this airport
It is true that there is a lot of traffic within New York City. This is why the new LGA is looking to optimize passenger transportation with NY’s mass transit system. Secondly, there have been a multitude of new facilities to keep vehicles moving. Overall LGA is becoming the newest and most advanced airport within the tri-state area. I strongly believe that you should come back to LGA when constitution is finished and experience what will be NY’s best airport!
No one:
Not a single soul:
Swiss001: La-guard-ia
It may be feeling like a third world war-torn country airport but it has some of the best approach and departure patterns when you're in the cockpit or seated by the window.
I remember my Orlando > La Guardia in 2016, the old JetBlue concourse (terminal B concourse A if I remember correctly) had dirty tarps full of leaking water barely hanging from the ceiling with a pestilential smell of sewage.
It felt like the shitiest MTA subway station from the 80's...
But the approach we took was stunning: arriving from the South SouthWest turning left towards North Northeast flying parallel to Manhattan along the Hudson then turning right and crossing over Manhattan just a little above Central Park at low altitude then getting on final for runway 13.
This is worth the helicopter ride around the city, it's the only airport with such a great approach so close to the buildings.
Now let's hope with the new terminals being built they'll connect the airport to the subway or some kind of train because it's a nightmare to access.
LGA: Is a BAD Airport
JFK: Is a GOOD Airport
SAK 51106 Aviation spotter 2 true I hate lga
0:25 that triangular park-like affair in the distance (below the "A" in "...A BAD..." if you tap the screen to overlay the title) is Flushing Field, a small local airstrip that closed in the 80s.
Notice how it aligns nicely with the triangular apron west of the point where LaGuardia's runways intersect? Yep. You could build a 13000'+ runway from here, all the way to the remains of Flushing Field. It would also create closed basin between the new runway and Queens which could be used for a pumped tidal energy scheme for instance.
All it would take is the forcible eviction of several hundred homeowners.

They are presently rebuilding the entire airport. I thinks its a 6 billion dollar project. I'm surprised you didn't know that since this video was posted this last May. In fact, two or three years ago when I flew in and out of LaGuardia construction was well on its way. As the rebuilding wasn't complete the last time I was there I will admit the older facility wasn't the most esthetic, but never the less, I always enjoy flying in and out of LaGuardia. The dramatic views you get flying over Manhattan are priceless. LaGuardia is a true New York experience.

They are actually in the midst of a major renovation at LaGuardia. In a few years, when it is complete the airport will be more tolerable for passengers.
I will say that the old US Airways terminal (which I guess is a AA terminal) is pretty good.
Rename this video to
"Me praising JFK international airport for 9 minutes straight"
You should do HVN (Tweed New Haven) airport in Connecticut in the USA. The city near it wants the airport to be expanded for more traffic and revenue, but the residents don't for obvious reasons. If you could do "Should HVN airport be expanded?" That would be great. If you don't, I understand.
I was waiting for your upload
It's so bad, Sully didn't even want to divert to it when he lost both engines.
swiss:"people hate this airport"
Sully:"no duh, remember something called, "the miracle on the Hudson?"
So the airport itself isn't too bad now? They are rebuilding the whole place so it should be far nicer. I've been to the new sections of the airport and I love it, lots of light and space, but they still got more work to do. You are right, the biggest airplane you'll see here is a 757 or an A321, and since it's a domestic airport, most flights here are from the east and certain airports in Canada.
Ehhh I went to this airport, for me the terminal we were in was somewhat decent
Honestly nobody understands the situation the airport planners are in.
Thank you for roasting my home airport Swiss. The airport doesn’t suck as much as it used to, and in terms of noise I live in the approach path of one of the runways and it’s really not that bad. It’s only loud if you live like a few blocks from the airport.

Hi! I can see you setting on for landing the a350 the RTO AUTO BRAKES, That position is only for when you are taking off for landing to set up the auto brakes just set in the ECAM the wheel vision and in the auto brakes side you can see threads, for setting the auto brakes just you have to do is with the small thread (the one that is on another thread bigger than her), turn it as far to the right and for the bigger thread while turning it to the right you can see how it appears in the ECAM, AUTOBRAKES LOW, 2, 3, HIGH, these are positions, I do not recommend anything the HIGH the one you should use the most is position 2 or LOW.
I hope you have understood me and that you can apply for your landings with the a350!

As someone from New York, it brings me great joy to know that the suckiness of LaGuardia is recognized worldwide
It’s unfortunate to hear that from a fellow New Yorker. Currently the reconstruction on LGA is to significantly improve the passenger experience. Not only will terminals be more modern, they will have connections to the MTA via train and an airside tram to streamline connections. Additionally, there will be more and larger taxiways to decrease the time planes spend on the ground. I hope that you get to fly out of the new LGA when it is done and form a new opinion about what will be NY’s newest airport.
Cooking with Andrew Hey there! Well I certainly agree with you there. I just found it funny that even as far as Switzerland, LGA has a “reputation”. This is only Swiss001 after all. No offense meant, this channel regularly pokes fun at things and I was joining in the banter. I flew in and out of LGA, and indeed all of the 3 NY airports for over 31 years as an airline pilot, and I need to set the record straight for you. First of all, LGA is by no means a dangerous airport. It IS an airport that requires a pilot to be on his or her toes and on the "A" game, but that level of capability is a given for professional pilots at the airline level, and always has been. Just about all airline pilots actually enjoy flying in and out of LGA because of the challenge of that very demand, in much the same way as a fighter pilot looks forward to a really challenging aerial engagement, at least in training!
The 7000 foot runways are plenty long enough for the airplanes that typically fly in and out. JFK has longer runways of course, but there were times, in the very early jet age, when they were none too long - just about every foot of the 14,300 foot runway 31L and JFK was used by the under powered original 707's flying to LHR and ORY. In addition to being long enough, several of the ends of the LGA runways have had EMAS installations for several decades. These serve to stop any airplane that overruns the runway itself, before it finds itself in the bay or in the middle of the Grand Central Parkway.
In the old days, before the runways were grooved and the EMAS system in place (the 50's and 60's) the water and expressways at the ends of the runways were indeed mildly hazardous, but that is long gone today. There are many other airports that have water or roadways right off the end of runways, so LGA is hardly unique. Consider DCA, as one example, or BOS. Even LAX, although there is a considerable hill at the ocean end of the runways, still offers the probability of a water landing off the west runways if more than one engine were to fail right at rotation speed.
It IS true that there is no real mass transit at LGA, but neither is there directly to JFK either - the train-to-the-plane of old was a subway stop near Aqueduct Raceway, and the current people mover involves a change of train at Jamaica to the LIRR, hardly first class transportation! Actually, the lack of rail connections at the NY airports is an artifact of NY politics between the 1930's and around the 1990's. Back in the day, a company called the Carey Transportation Company (or something to that effect) had an exclusive contract with the city of NY for ground transportation to the NY airports. This monopoly continued well into my career, and on more than one occasion when I was living in Manhattan, I betook myself to the Port Authority Bus Terminal to catch the Carey Bus to either LGA or JFK. By the time that that whole arrangement was over (for who knows what reason) it was way past the time when any kind of rail could be laid to LGA at any kind of affordable price. Today, of course, given enough money they could build an elevated system in the middle of an expressway like the one at JFK, and possibly they will as part of the new terminal project. By the way, the new airport project affects only the terminals and ramps, NOT the runways! They will always be 7000 feet long. Again, plenty long enough for narrowbodies and RJ's.
Interestingly, the Port Authority of NY had intended that LGA should be closed after JFK (originally Idlewild) got fully developed in the 1960's. But the airport refused to die, once the 727 (which was specifically designed to operate into the original 5000 foot LGA runways) and the 737 and DC-9 were in operation. Of all of the 3 NY area airports it is the closest to the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where a good deal of the NY customer base lives, and by far the easiest and cheapest to get to, especially by cab. The public pretty much abandoned EWR, until People Express took over with cheap fares and a "bridge and tunnel" clientelle; but they never ceased to fly in and out of LGA, and to demand service there. The airlines were happy to oblige them.
What were the largest airplanes ever operated regularly at LGA? That would be the DC-10, the A-300 and the L-1011, all of which flew in and out for at least a decade. Once again, those airplanes were designed to use that airport (although the A-300 used to have some turning restrictions on the portions of the runways and taxiways located on the piers). The operation of any airplane at any airport is determined by many variables, one of which is called runway weight bearing capability. This relates to how much weight can be placed on the pavement by each wheel without damaging the surface. A C-5 Galaxy could probably operate on LGA, because it has 28 wheels and each one bears a smaller load, but the size and geometry of that airplane would probably force the temporary closure of the airport while it was on the ground! The 747, on the other hand, has but 18 wheels and puts a much larger load on each one. That would most likely exceed LGA's limits.
As a passenger experience LGA, being one of the oldest terminals currently in full operation in the world, does lack the modern clean look and at least a few of the amenities. But it was designed in an era when there was virtually no security, and the passenger counts were much lower, along with far fewer flights per day. It has aged with about as much grace as your average Hollywood starlet - that is to say, not too well! But that is the reason for the enormous upgrade, which is actually a complete reconstruction. The new LGA will be world class, and the NY passengers will have little or nothing to complain about. They will immediately find things to complain about - that is the nature of the New Yorker (I can say this because I was one!). But Fiorello's little airport on the bay will soldier on into the 21st century every bit the wonder that it was when in opened in the late 1930's. World Class then, World Class tomorrow when it is completed.
And we pilots will still enjoy flying in and out, for as long as we will actually be doing the flying - maybe another 20 years or so. I will probably not be around then, and that is certainly just as well.
LaGuardia: Why are you guys are acting like you’re better than me !

... I'm confused. In the first two minutes of the video, he says that the La Guardia runways are only ~7000ft each; then proceeds to call them short. Swiss then goes on to JFK and states that JFK has runways ~4400ft...; calls them much longer...
4400 meters*
@@arsat1 Thank you.
I think the largest plane there was a KC-10 mid-air refueling tanker, unless the 767 is bigger. (I'm not sure). it was there at a kid's day event last year.
I had a 2 hour layover at La Guardia in 2019 traveling from Boston to Orlando. I will never fly through this airport again. It was not worth the $50 i saved by not flying non stop. It was insanely hot inside the terminal and it was cramped and crowded with very little seating. inbound flight from Boston landed 20 minutes early, departing flight left the gate on time but then we sat on a taxiway for over an hour before we took off.
