1996 C4 Pilot featuring Simon Munnery, Stewart Lee, Kevin Eldon, Roger Mann, Sally Phillips, Jason Freeman and Richard Thomas.
Basically Simon Munnery as the egotistical 'League Against Tedium' character, the origins of Cluub Zarathustra date back to 1993, read more about it here: www.sotcaa.net/... and www.themightybo...
My favourite thing about this is the cast talking over the end with a caption "Insert more money" upon screen, absolutely shocking this diddnt get comissioned, another thing to note would be that Julian Barratt was in the pilot but his bits were cut for some reason.

I have to admit that I cannot remember the last time I went to see a film or even switched on the TV. I must be paying about £30/hour for my TV license. I would have like to have seen CZ commissioned. Too far ahead for it's time I guess. So many tiny details - non sequiturs in French. It had vast amounts of potential; you don't necessarily use ALL of your best stuff in a pilot and people like Roger Mann are mystifyingly obscure. People have to remember this is from 1995 (or 1996 - I forget which) so it was a LONG way ahead of the curve.
I've been a bit disappointed that Sally Phillips didn't keep developing her work because for the first few years I felt certain she would be right at the vanguard of new forms of comedy. The pilot of 'Junkies', a spoof of Friends COULD have been been really good but I suppose the demographic of viewers would preclude the REALLY funny junkie (chaotic opioid users) jokes. Too few people would know that Diconal cooks up into 'strawberry milkshakes', that Palfium is so variable in it's effects (one day 5 is perfect, next day you take 4 and pull a blue) and that users would go to the dentist to obtain Physeptone (methadone tablets rather than linctus) before the days of sugar-free. Phys were often whacked up with cyclizine (Valoid motion-sickness tablets) as a rough estimation of the Diconal hit.
I'm still waiting patiently for Tractatus Ilogico-Ridiculam. While Wittgenstein's work doesn't look like fertile ground at first glance, closer inspection does lend itself to some acts; this pilot has all the people (I know of) who are capable of doing it in one place. It's easy to just change the nouns if you are working with something a couple of paragraphs long, but to apply the appropriate, formal lack of logic to such a long work is a very tough but potentially it could actually derive new forms. The entire point of CZ was to avoid conventional stand up and it was in uncharted waters... someone had to be first. That hard-won knowledge has obviously been of benefit to (almost) everyone concerned. But can W's brief be fulfilled? 'A serious and good philosophical work could be written consisting entirely of jokes'. I hope so.

I'm a big Simon Munnery fan but I've just never got the League Against Tedium character. Wierdly though, I have his little book of his jokes, and some of the ones I found hilarious written down turned out to be league against tedium ones that I didn't find as funny when said in character. Must be something to do with the delivery.

@3LARI It is genuinely refreshing to hear that somebody has actually watched something before assessing its value. I didn't think that this was awful, but I vastly preferred Attention Scum.

a higher budget than the series but not as tight or funny. the hat scenes are better here.

I can see why this never got made. Perhaps with more budget it could have been a bit more polished.
