Biggest diference between UK/USA, here in UK passenger traffic has priority. So much so I know freight tfc is sent on convulated routes to avoid mainline passenger routes. Old rail lines have reopened as freight only lines to alleviate this. With the need to cut emissions, I feel that it is only going to increase. Great news as a rail fan!
Didn't have a car growing up. My Single parent Mum on benefits, took us to London x2, Blackpool, Filey, Claxton on sea and every other year to Scarborough, for our holidays (vacations), using a family railcard. I remember some of the carriages were from the steam train era, back in the 1970s. From Yorkshire
Scotland has a very comprehensive rail system too, not just England. It's just our population is more concentrated in the one area. Glasgow for example has the largest urban rail network outside of London. Some good railway lines to try when you get here are the West Highland Line, (including the Glenfinnan Viaduct from your thumbnail) The Kyle Line, The Highland Main Line, The West Coast Main line (including the Caledonian Sleeper), the East Coast Main line, the Settle-Carlisle Line, The Cornish Mainline (including the Night Riviera), The Cambrian Coast Line.... and so many more. Honestly they might be pricey but there's so many fantastic journeys to do here covering most of the island. For an added bonus Glasgow has a subway system that is almost like a toy train because it's so small..but we still love it! A former politician, Michael Portillo has done a fantastic series about railways in Britain, some episodes are on youtube. I disagree with his politics but he does make good TV.
