I understand why Dylan hates the sound of your voice on that 1800.
What is it like to be the microphone review messiah?
Some Say I'm Sssssuper Sssssssibilant
@@DarkCornerStudios Oh I can sssssssssssibilant like nobody’s busssssssssinesssssssss.
That box throw was hilarious! Great review as usual. Thanks.
One of the best mics money can buy. Interesting how some people still say that the 102 sounded better. It just not come even close (nor even far!). People tend to like these cheap highs and harsh mics (like they also like these boomy fake bass headphones). The point is, when you put, for example, a Pultec in the chain and open the sound all the way up of 16k, you get from the u89 a soooo beautiful air, detailed smooth transients... while in the TLM102 all you'll get is... harshness!
💯 U89i is detailed, smooth, honest and takes eq/post processing like a dream. Secret weapon available used for decent prices.
Loved it !! Funny and informative 😎
I loved the mic comparisons! I mean, why not?
I actually still can't get over the BCM 104...so smooth and well-rounded, leagues ahead of TLM 102 or 103 imo and obviously vastly more affordable than 89i
the akg perception series is mostly circuit clones of the u87, believe it or not. The capsules are a few db peakier in the air frequencies, as well as the presence at 5k.
The K89 capsule, used in the U89 (and also in the TLM170) was designed for a flat response. It does not have a boost around 5 to 7 k, but most of the other mics in this comparison do have this boost. So, of course, without eq, in this application, the U89 might sound a bit weak - but on the other hand, it's a wonderful versatile microphone. It's off-axis sound is very neutral and, on top, the design with both diaphragms on ground level (and separated, polarized backplates) is a massive advantage over the very common capsule-design, that is also used in the U67 / U87 (being very prone to bad insulation values, resulting in noise or drop outs).
By the way: every technician, who ever repaired old Neumann mics, can tell exactly, why they are so much more expensive than mass produced chinese mics: These Microphones are German made professional broadcast equipment. All used components are of the highest available quality level, same shit that I know from avionics, e.g. switches by Knitter, sockets by Augat etc... They are designed for a maximum reliability under professional conditions, with switches that do NOT fail, even if you flick them 100.000 times...
This might no longer be the case with the more modern mics (TLM103 etc, although they still are GREAT), but at least that's the case with all the old originals, e.g. U87, U67, KM84, just to name a few...
Today, you're definitely paying some extra cash for the name - but, hey, that's the same shit with every big name today, right?... Just check out, what kind of rubbish is being sold under the names of the few big american guitar brands today...
Do you think that U89 Ai sounds better than U87AI.
This a NoYMEN mic! Thank you for the video.
What is your signal chain?! Looks like that's doing a lot of magic
102 is far thinner/more sibilant. u89 is an underrated mic imo, especially in today's crystal clean digital interface prosumer/podcaster landscape.
It’s nice to hear this mic still hard to distinct the true real difference but hearing more on the 170’s with this capsule also the tlm 193 using the same this is a very smooth semi dark sound I’d rather have this mic then one that don’t need a boost I’d say it’s better to have mics where you can add to it without already adding extra it’s sick
Heard what I always do, when switched to the TLM102/103.
This was fun!
Thanks for watching!
The Neumann U89i is sooo smooth
Great video! What mic preamp you used with the u89? And what audio interface?
Funny you should ask.
Audient Evo 4
@@DarkCornerStudios That Audient interface sounds great! Next time try the U89 or your U87 and the others mics with a microphone preamp and you're going to hear the big difference. I like the way your Studio look!!! Great video!
The U89i sounds great!
I have both, as in this video, the 102 is a bit "harsher", but for my deep and also harsh voice the 102 works very well for clarity and it doesn't seem too harsh compared to many other mics, the 89 is muddy and unclear in comparison
A great alternative for the 89, for almost half the price, would be the TLM 193 which is the transformerless, cardioid only version of the 89. And I'm still confused why people think the 87 is so good, especially up against something like the 89. Do people not want their voice to sound big?
That musical warmth coupled with the open top end that isn't harsh or over sibilant...through youtube's compression algorithms...U87ai ! I could listen to the U87 output all day without getting my ears burned.
The RE20 totally sounds like radio. lol
Used a lotta quality mics over the years but in all honesty the 58 stands up pretty level to the Neuman. I'm listening on Eris 5.5's through a UA volt. Am i missing something?
The TLM 102 is brighter and a bit more sibilant.
I prefer the TLM 103 personally it has that classic Neuman sound if there is one.
but still the SM7B and the 58 blew me away at how good they sound against each other.
Through a good preamp and i think any one would have a hard time picking it blind.
And if the music is cooking no one will ever care. love the shootout keep em coming !!!!
The microphone looks like a butt haha, I like that, good fun video and interesting the comparisons
I thought the TLM 102 sounded the best on your voice. Just Velvet.
I can see how this U89i can be a work horse with the wider range on the cardio patterns then the u87.
But if your already spending that much, I'd jump to the 149M. Which I would love to see a demo of!!! 😁🎤
And also, how awesome that $100 SM58 holds up to still be such a respectable mic!
Great review!
Thanks!
And all fantastic points.
When my wallet grows sufficiently...I will look into the M149...lol...my wallet has a bit to go before that though...lol
@@DarkCornerStudios 😁
I was watching reviews on the M149 for vocal singers, and some high ends have a volume boost or peak that might need to be smoothed out in editing. (what you said, slight eq) Compared to the U87ai, which is stable and smooth all the way through.
It feels like such a gamble to spend so much money on a mic, and not know exactly how it will react to the voice.
Edit: So people don't get the wrong idea, (and I am not an expert, at all on this stuff yet) I think the perception I had from the M149 samples on the UA-cam videos were more from picking the right polar pattern and proximity for the right song and vocalist then anything with the actual mic.
Like what you guys say, sound equipment that high end (or at any level), the quality comes down to the skill of the artist and engineer more then the Mic itself.
@@DarkCornerStudios
I picked up the TLM 102 for vocals using your link in the battle of the Neumanns video.
Very happy with it for the home setting.
Almost disappointed I did not get the 103, but after working with the 102 and learning more from it from using it, I can see why Neumann recommends it for the home studio over others, besides the price.
I did have to take the pop filter out from the capsule housing though, because I heard a buzz to the sound, and found a loose piece of paper scotch tape that was used to attach the pop filter to the mesh surrounding the capsule.
With the pop filter out, and using a normal pop filter away from the mic, it sounds so much more clear.
@@jpipes it feels like that with most mics...500...1500...5000.
That said...guessing a small amount of eq would be all...and nary a harsh frequency in sight
Yes
The U89 is such a great mic, bit off an overkill for podcast maybe but in the studio a lot more useful than a u87
Overkill maybe, depends on what you're doing. Ben Shapiro is using this mic, it makes a difference I can hear the quality of it if I watch one of his videos.
I really don’t love this mic on your voice. It just sounds woolly to my ears. The Rhode to me is a better choice. I want a clear and fairly balanced vocal sound that you can add warmth and saturation to later exactly dailed in
Lets face it if you have one mic in your mic cupboard your either gonna hire one or use that mic lol.
Heart-butt jokes in 2022? Reaaaally? Oh man.
