What Romans 13 Says About Submission to Government Authority

- A lot of people have questions about Romans 13 verses one to seven, which tells Christians to submit to the governing authorities and that God has put the governing authorities in place basically to keep order in the world and to keep evil at bay and to reward those who do what is good.
Now we all know and Paul certainly knew that not all governments are good. In fact there are many governments in the world today that are quite bad. The question down through Christian history for Christians who consider scripture to be authoritative is, "how could I obey this particular passage, Romans 13, one to seven and yet also obey the many, many parts of scripture that talk about not oppressing the poor? That talk about reaching out to the disenfranchised and the marginalized to welcoming and showing hospitality to the stranger? How can I obey all the many passages of scripture that speak of extending love and kindness to others, especially those who are not like me when my government may be putting laws into place that say I should not show that love and kindness to people?"
In this video, New Testament Scholar, Frank Thielman explains this controversial scripture.

The whole context before and after Romans 13 is about upholding and doing what is good and righteous. 13 then talks about the 'governing authorities' solely in the context of a good and just government that is seeking the best for it's people and punishing the wrongdoer. "For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God's servant *for your good* . But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. *For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing.* " It is literally saying you must pay taxes to fund a good government so that goodness and justice can be carried out. It is mind-blowing to me that, when scripture is taken as a whole, people think that God wants his righteous people to sit idle as terror, tyranny, and oppression are inflicted upon innocents at the hands of vile, evil, GODLESS thugs that happen to be in charge of one particular government out of hundreds of other governments who aren't doing those things...Which government should we submit to then, and why? Question about one statement. What laws would not allow us to show love and kindness to people. I'm honestly confused. How can a government dictate how we treat people? I can't think of a current law that government is telling people they can't show love and kindness.
Ask someone in the countries I've listed below that same question about their laws and government treatment of Christians. The Bible wasn't written for only citizens of the United States. It's difficult to preach the gospel to the four corners when not everybody welcomes us.
The ultimate expression of love from a Christian standpoint is simply sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Matthew 28:19 “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost.”
1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Another expression of love is to ask someone if you can pray for them when they are sick or down.
Job 42:10 “And the Lord turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.”
James 5:16 “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
John 3:16 “That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”
All of the above instructions in scripture are illegal to practice in the following countries: China, North Korea, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Libya, Iraq, Nepal, Yemen, Iran and is increasing in India - to name a few. In these countries, you are not allowed to express the love of Christ or you are sent to jail or killed on the spot. Google Christian churches being burned down in Africa. They call it persecution.
And especially claiming this in one of the above countries: 1 Timothy 2:5 “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;” Will send you and your whole family straight to a work camp for life or death.
This whole thing is unloving and unlawful.

Government is an institution that uses force and coercion to achieve its aims. Its very structure shows hatred for your fellow man, masquerading in love for the poor or disadvantaged.
Vaccination laws were one example, and this is only in the past year. I'm sure there were other instances. Good question you raised.

IMO - The scripture is very balanced. Governing authorities "bear the sword" for the narrow purpose of bringing wrath on those who do evil. In doing this they act as Gods ministers. So long as the governing authorities do not overstep this limitation they remain as Gods ministers, and we are to obey.
Romans Ch 13 presumes that the governing authorities have no power to define or redefine evil. Throughout scripture this separation of powers is maintained in all divinely approved governing structures. The church/temple defines what is good or evil, but has no enforcement power. The governing authorities have enforcement power (sword), but do not have power to alter right and wrong.
What about the governing authorities who bring wrath on homosexuality in some Muslim countries?

God has ordained 4 spheres of authority/governance: self governance; family governance (fathers); church governance (elders); civil governance (kings, presidents, governors, magistrates, etc). Each has its own specific God-assigned sphere, and God is the God of all of them -> they must all give an account to God one day (Rom 14:12; 2 Cor 5:10; Heb 13:17; 1 Pet 4:5; Rom 13:1-5)
Whenever any one of those authorities oversteps its God-ordained sphere of authority, they are defying God. The Christian need not obey them because the Christian has a higher authority, namely, the one who is above all and assigned that role of governance that is being defied.
People who say governments are ordained by god are forgetting to ask one crucial question: which god?
As the Bible tells us in the story of the Temptation of Christ, Satan is the rightful prince and god of this material world and all political authority comes from him. Christ didn't argue that claim. He denied the authority.
1 Samuel Chapter 8 tells us that those who want a mortal government to rule over them have rejected God.
The early Christians weren't persecuted because they believed in God, but because they rejected the purported authority of those who weren't God.

It is unbelievable that people at this day and age still believe in this things.
Yet your here on a video about it.

this is why im a christian anarchist, i obey god's law and any law that agrees with the lord! when civil govt. is uncivil im doing something about it!
The government is us; we are the government, you and I.
Theodore Roosevelt
Amen.
Dude that is the longest high I have ever seen in my entire life.
Amen
This is at least partially true and helpful, no doubt, but I believe it gets more complicated than this. When our governments, as they seem to frequently do, regularly harm others, then does our obligation to love our neighbor come first even if it means we are to be seriously forceful troublemakers? Those who talk about 1940s Germany often say we are to be extremely forceful troublemakers, so to speak, but why should this not apply now, then?
Most of christian interpret romans 13 is you must trust a leader at any cause which is Not what romans 13 says, It says we must submitted authroities , the authorities establish is the rules and regulations of the Law, good fair, just and right, . In order that we are Not trouble maker, NOW if the government persicute christian my suggestion that is good term of the government because according to the Bible once a governor persicute us it proves that God is with Us, and we blessed more and more,
It does not make breaking a morally neutral law a sin. Seriously if you think that the legal system can make breaking a morally neutral law a sin you are out of your mind.
Samuel God said asking for a king is a bad idea. IT’s tantamount to rejecting him
1 Timothy 2:1-2 KJV
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; [2] For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
AMEN
Most misunderstood Bible verse..
What is your interpretation? Just curious. Personally I am thinking it is submitting to higher powers of god not the worldy governments.
I’m not sure why Paul and his letters are even taken seriously. He never walked with Jesus.
This is within reason. You submit to no governing authority if its corrupt
We obey higher power.- JESUS GOVERNMENT
Powers DOES NOT MEAN Government... the kjv doesn't say Government...
Is he computer generated, no emotion, no emotion? I cannot imagine him keeping the attention of his congregation. He may know his stuff, and he seems to, energy is needed.
You've been "licensed" into submission.... your Religious Rights and Beliefs have been oppressed for decades.... yet you still submit.... 501C3....is getting permission from "The State" for something God has commanded.... you all fundamentally misinterprete and incorrectly apply scripture in everyday life....
I am a women who raised my sons alone and the man yet can make sons do wrong when I see what there going thru it stinks foul
Obey wicked tyrants because reasons.
Acts 5:29. Get your head out of the sand.
The fallen Angels dictate your government's that the common man abides by. The masses have been deceived.
This is a complete misreading of the passage. "Governing authorities" is about church leadership. You can find similar advice by the Apostles elsewhere in the New Testament about actual governments, yet you will not see this language about complete submission, etc. Romans 13, however, is about church leaders. Just look at where it sits in the rest of the passage. Paul is talking about church structure, pivots wildly to civil structure, then pivots wildly back to church structure. Don't think so.
You forgot to mention the fact that the Roman government cut the apostle Paul's head off. Apparently Paul and the Roman government had a slight difference of opinion. And another thing. The creation of civil government is in itself a violation of the Law Of Moses when Moses instructed the Israelites never to have a king but rather to live as a free people.
The word Government literally means "control the mind" Govern = control and ment = mental. Control mentality....
Everything corrupts, the priests, churches, and texts too, ashes and dust. Jesus taught us to rebel against authority. Blind faith is darkness and slavery. Jesus and the snake encouraged us to seek truth, life, and light.
I disagree with Romans 13??? Why should I submit to those demons?? With all the fuckery going on NOT RIGHT NOW!!! NOT RIGHT NOW!!!
Those who resist authority are opposed to the ordinance of God. It doesn’t say obey sometimes.
FIRST WE MUST UNDERSTAND "WHOM" ROMANS 13 DESCRIBES
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.
6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor."
ALLOW ME TO PRESENT GODS WORD FOR WE ARE TO CHECK ALL THINGS BY HIS WORD
Acts 20:28
“Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.”
Galatians 4:2
“But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.”
Hebrews 13:17
“Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.”
THESE THREE ALONE IDENTIFIES "WHOM" ROMANS 13 IS DESCRIBING
IT SURE ISNT DESCRIBING MANS GOVERNEMENT
IT IS CLEAR UPON GODS GOVERNEMENT
Isaiah 9:6
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
This can’t be the case because the Bible it’s self is illegal in some countries
I show love to strangers
Now it make sense the government wrote the bible lol.
Follow authorities with this virus?
They shut down the churches but keep liquor stores open.. wicked. I've only just heard of Romans 13 I'm trying to understand it
@@OverWatchMenVid Check out KJVM Brian Dellinger he explained it 10 times better. Thumbnail is him with full PPE. To keep it simple no we do listen to the authority when they say we have to wear masks. We listen to the authority when we break the law like killing someone, stealing, robbing or rape.

well said
Then why did Jesus disobey the Government and that is why they had him executed!
The man in the video is a heretick
I agree I also believe that for laws morally neutral you can disobey it if you are ready to submit to the penalty if levied

E.g: Saul, acab, etc.
You have not gotten the true interpretation of ROMANS 13. For the true meaning see my video THEY HAVE BEEN LYING TO YOU ABOUT ROMANS 13. It clearly shows not that you must obey government, but that you must obey God's hierarchy.
Deuteronomy 28:42-45
42 Crickets will take over all your trees and your soil's produce.
43 The immigrants who live among you will be promoted over you, higher and higher! But you will be demoted, lower and lower!
44 They will lend to you, but you will have nothing to lend to them. They will be the head of things; you will be the tail.
45 That's how all these curses will come over you, pursuing you, reaching you until you are completely wiped out, because you didn't obey the LORD your God's voice by keeping his commandments and his regulations that he gave you.
No worries..any kingdom that goes against God..normally find the ditch
Watch a 6 video series by Pastor Weaver on Christian's and Civil Gov't
Anyway, it is easy to understand that if gov authority contradict with God's command then we no need to obey the gov authority. In real life, it is not that easy. What about people living in slum area. It is illegal. So how to obey the gov authority in this? To obey gov authority not to live in slum area is not a sin but how to obey as people are poor? Is it a sin to live in slum area because it is disobedient to gov authority?
Why would anyone need a book to tell them this.. its written in our hearts.. what God do you serve..
I use to hate the government. Now I understand
The bible is a evil book.
What do you understand?
Great video. Yes I agree, I think we should generally obey authorities insofar as it doesn't violate our own consciences, but when an authority asks us to do something that goes against our own conscience then I think resistance to authority then becomes obediance to God.
Yes. To KEEP EVIL AT BAY
Yeah cos Saul really submitted to the authorities didn't he.
Thank you for this message. The alien immigrants are inspiring our USA citizens or residents to be more like them.
Only our government has not stated that we can not proclaim Christ. They are not singling out the Church. Thus, Romans 13 is very appropriate. Until we are confronted with Gods Divine Law in conflict with mans law.
However you are (in lockdown situations) not allowed to preach the gospel to folk by meeting up with them, in fact in my country of Scotland, for a long time I was not allowed to meet with my brother who was struggling lots with lockdowns because it was so isolating. I did visit him of course, as it was better to be a good brother than to obey the tyrant Nicola Sturgeon. Or do you honestly think I should have just stayed at home as I wasn't being forbidden from "preaching the gospel"?
Bruce your point is retarded from multiple levels get out of here
The Scriptures teach that rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft.
Yet, our forefathers rebelled against a sitting king.
So, were our forefathers good Christian men or were they witches?
They were good men!
There are circumstances that arise which empower men to push back against an evil power.
Example: Hitler
Jim Jones? Great name you've got there. Anyhow, if you say the Scriptures teach that rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, then explain the 3 Hebrew Boys. Explain Saint Thomas More. Witches? I don't think so. As for Hitler, he was biblically illegitimate since his office stemmed from a rebellion against the last lawful head of state of Germany, Emperor William II. So rebellion against him did not conflict with Romans 13.
Trump is a God fearing man.
So someone who has been involved in numerous sexual misconducts, adulteries, and who have lied over 20,000 times in office is a God fearing man? Someone who has been slandering his political opponents is a God fearing man? Someone who has admitted that he never asks God to forgive him of his sins is a God fearing man?
Governing the law of moses and the law of the land (constitution) duh are yall that blind
You can't have 2 masters pick 1
Yet another place where the Bible contradicts itself.
With reference to our previous comment-
Have you found that over the years, the more you did FOR FREE for your trustees, the more ungrateful, thankless and abusive they have become, so may we politely suggest the following good mental health de-escalation-for-remedy?
Them-`You will do what we tell you to do`
You-`YES, CERTAINLY (this removes the controversy) it`s just that we charge you $911 per hour for our time and also $777 for our performance each in-the-private to do that for you and because we have NO CONFIDENCE with you administrating OUR trust, payment must be with us immediately and any further communicating with us, is with you and your supervisor accepting the terms and conditions because notice-to-agent-is-notice-to-principal`
(This way, you are NOT resisting nor refusing to obey/comply with their orders/requests/policy ....and you have moved the process into negotiation stage and so cannot progress to court)
Be the BUSINESS-man with your trustees....NOT the victim, because there is nothing wrong with any system.....is it not our negligence with not using it for OUR benefit?...by COUNTER-charging.
Nah I'm not submitting. We were given free will. I'll use it for good.
