    With all those empties you only need one "QL" to pull that lot, Pacific National had a policy of switching "surplus power" to idle to conserve fuel, they called it "Fuel Miser" at the time. Inherited the concept from FreightCorp.

      Makes sense to do that. I have often wondered why three locos always do the run as it's not as if there are lots of hills to climb going south fully-loaded but there must be a reason...an extra just in case of a loco failure perhaps!?! Rarely I see four locos heading north so they pick one up somewhere along the way..

      I just realised (yep, slow on the uptake haha) that the south-bound loaded steel trains would need 3 locos to get up to Moss Vale from Port Kembla via Robertson.
